CHAPTER 1
She stood under the tree shivering and clutching her son tight. Her sister was leaning against her, and she could feel her cold clammy hands and hear her teeth chattering softly. The rain poured relentlessly and the strong winds did not help. She looked around, the street was dark and lonely, and she desperately wished to get out of here.
She began to look around for some hope, a light, or even a passerby. Then she saw a group of people heading her way. She was relieved at first, but as they got nearer, she realized they were drunk and looked like hooligans. She had to move away from there. But the place was her only cover; they would be under the mercy of the rain. But, she couldn't take the chance of standing here, waiting for them to get closer. She gently nudged her sister and they started walking in the opposite direction. Her sister just followed meekly, without questioning her.
She glanced back and noticed that the men were walking faster and gaining up on her. She bit her lip nervously and increased her pace as well. Just then she saw a pair of headlights coming towards her in a distance. She knew she had to get to it, no matter what. She clutched her sister's hand and holding on to her son, she ran as fast as her feet could take her. As she got nearer she left her sister and waved frantically. The car suddenly braked and stopped in front of her. An elderly man rolled down the window.
Sir, please help me, she said in a quivering voice. He looked up at her. She seemed to be from a good family, he thought. She looked familiar, but he couldn't seem to place her.
She repeated again. Sir, there are some people after us, please she beseeched. He nodded his head and gestured to her to enter the car. She hurriedly pushed her sister in and then got in herself with her son. She looked ahead and she noticed a kind woman looking at them.
Don't worry, beta, she said gently. The man started driving.
Thank you so much she said greatfully.
I can take you wherever you want to go, the man said.
We have no where to go sir, a small voice replied. We have been turned to the streets by our own family, the young girl replied with a hint of anger in her voice. Sorry, sir, the woman said after lightly admonishing her, My sister is a little tired. But, I would appreciate if you could take us to the church a mile away. We were on our way there. I have heard that they offer shelter.
Why don't you come home with us, the woman asked.
She looked at the old woman and felt tears stinging her eyes, she felt touched by her concern. Thank you maam for your kindness, but please we don't want to be a bother. The church is fine, really, she said.
Oh, it will be no bother, it's just the two of us at home, tell her, she said nudging her husband.
He stared at her through his review mirror. He was not a man to be swayed by emotions but looking at the quiet girl in front of him, holding on to her son and sister so protectively, made his heart melt. She was clad in a white sari, devoid of any jewelry . She was a widow. He could not leave her and her son to the mercy of the cruel night.
Yes, please, I insist. Our house is just a little away. Let me introduce myself. My name is Uday Walia of Walia industries. This is my wife Krishna.
She smiled, my name is Bani, and this my sister Rano and my son Aman.
