Chapter 5 Bani and Tony ran from the kitchen to the study room from where they heard jai's scream. Tony ran inside and Bani stood at the door staring at Jai's back who was shaking his father and calling him repeatedly.
Bani did not think twice she ran to the phone and dialed the hospital.
Jai lifted his father's motionless body in his arms and put him on the couch , sitting next to him he rubbed his arms.
Bani put the phone on the cradle and ran to the room. She hesitantly stepped inside. She felt her dupatta being tugged from behind. She saw shradha's frightened face.
'Nothing Shadhu. Go to your room ma will be in shortly.
Looking at her mother's serious face she walked back to her room.
Jai looked from his father to her from where the sound came. Tony sat beside Uday trying to wake him up.
Bani saw Jai's face bathed in sweat. He looked frightened.
'I have called for the ambulance.. they will be here in a minute…' she said assuring.
He looked at her gratefully. He was so worried when his father collapsed he couldn't move from the room or act wisely.
Jai looked back at his father who was lying on the couch. It was his fault. His father was in this state if he…
They heard the vehicle and Tony ran to open the door. Paramedics strode in and JAi helped them and he followed them to the ambulance.
He heard them saying his pulse was very weak and they should get him to the hospital immediately. Jai prayed hard. He wouldn't be able to forgive himself if anything happened to his father.
Bani saw them leave. She closed the door and walked quickly to Shradha.
The child was sitting on the bed holding a toy looking lost. She ran to Bani as she saw her and wrapped her arms around her weeping.
Bani knew Shradha was aware her dadaji was sick and something was wrong with him. She put her arms securely around her.
Kaveri mausi put the cooked food in containers and put them in the fridge. Bani helped her clean the kitchen. the woman send her back and told her she would take care of the rest of the things.

Bani couldn't shut her eyes. She knew this time it was serious. She couldn't lie down on the bed. She got up unwrapping shradha's arms from her neck.
Bani couldn't forgive her if anything happened to Uday Walia. She feared for his life. She had always kept a distance from him. Never gave him chance to get close to her. She was angry with him for the situation he had put her through.
But when looked from his perspective he was right he wanted to keep his grand daughter. His late son's only daughter, he had punished his son for marrying a girl out of his league he wanted to make it up to him. He wanted the child. Bani felt her head would explode if she thought more about it.
No one called her since they left, Tony did not ring her, what might have happened? Is he alright? God! Please.. help him to pull through this one please. She pleaded.
She walked out of the room and punched Tony's number.
The phone rang from the kitchen.
'Oh No!..' she muttered.
She called the hospital and enquired about the patient. She was put on hold. Bani disconnected the line after few minutes.
She walked up and down the hall like a caged pigeon.
Why don't someone ring her and tell her how he was doing? Why isn't any one bothered to let her know his conditions? Bani wanted to go to the hospital herself and see what was happening. She knew at this hour it was difficult to go by taxi alone. She did not want to trouble Kaveri mausi or Wake Shradha up. But she was not getting any peace not knowing about his condition.
Bani walked up to the phone and picked it. The phone kept on ringing and finally a sleepy woman picked up the call.
Bani spoke on the phone hurriedly and the woman put her on hold again. If Bani could she would give left and right to the woman . Before she hung up another woman spoke.
'Madam could you please tell me about the patient named Uday Walia..' Bani tried to keep her impatience.
'Just a minute..' said the woman.
Before the woman could put her on hold she yelled. "Don't you dare put me on hold. I have been holding the phone for hours tell me how he is doing…'
'Madam…. I'll pass the line to his son… wait.. he is here..' said the nurse startled.
Bani heard Jai's masculine voice over the phone.
'How is he?' she asked.
Jai took a second to answer her he felt guilty for not calling her and informing her about his dad's condition.
He was riding on the guilt trip.
'The doctor says 24 hours..' he said.
The phone trembled from her hand. Jai could felt the concern in her voice.
'He will pull through… I know..' he said.
'I want to come to the hospital.. Now.. Send Tony..' her voice cracked.
'Come in the morning.. there'snt much anyone can do here. You can't see him Bani…' Jai said carefully.
'I want to come now… send Tony…' she repeated stubbornly.
JAi knew from her tone there was no point in arguing with her.
'I'll send Tony..'
She put the phone down and ran to Kaveri mausi asked her to take care of Shradha.

In another 45 minutes Bani reached the hospital. She followed Tony hurriedly and stopped before the I C U..
Jai looked up as he heard hurried foot steps. He got up from the chair and looked at her guiltily.
Bani stood outside the door trying to look in to see a glimpse of him. Somewhere in her heart she felt she was at fault for Uday Walia's condition.
Jai studied her from distance. He did not understand what she felt for his dad. He dad never seen them converse. He hardly saw them together. And still she was here for him.
'Bani madam.. you sit down. No one can go in….' Tony said sadly.
Bani walked from the door and walked to the waiting section. She sat down on the chair looking eagerly at the door. Hoping the doctor would come out and tell her he would be alright.
Bani did not know how long she sat there. She got up hurriedly as the door opened and a nurse walked out.
Jai and Bani reached to the woman at once.
'Sister.. how is Uday Walia?' Bani asked.
The sister looked from Bani to Jai.
'You are his?' the woman asked Bani..
Bani did not have time to ponder on that question and waste time.
'I don't know… how he is doing?' she asked eagerly to the woman.
The nurse frowned.
Jai did not interrupt…
'Tell me… how is he doing?' Bani repeated.
'He is getting the best treatment we can give here… can't say anything now..' the nurse looked at Jai and said.
Bani backed away and sat on the chair looking lost. The nurse left and Jai looked at her direction walked towards her and sat down next to her.
They did not know how long they sat in silence.
Few hours later Jai left her side and walked out of the building to smoke. The guilt was burning him and he blamed him for his father's condition.

Bani's back ached sitting on the chair for longer time. She got up and took long strides in the corridor.
Duty nurse opened the door of the ICU and Bani looked at her eagerly.
The nurse walked up to her and said, "Do you want to take a look at him? I have been watching you sitting here for longer time…'
Bani nodded.
'Come.. ' she called her and Bani followed her hurriedly to the ward.
The nurse opened the door of his room and moved aside for her to get in. Bani saw him on the bed white as a sheet. Tubes were hooked around him. She walked towards his bed and stared at his face. Uday Walia's smiling face flashed before her. The way he looked at her at times with warmth. She knew he cared for her and she knew he knew her well. Though they never exchanged more than few words their silence spoke volumes.
A tear trickled down her cheeks. Her throat tightened and she looked away for a moment.
'Pray .. he will pull through..' said the nurse assuring.
She looked at him again. Reached for his hand touched his fingers. She felt his skin cool against her's.
Please come back… get well soon.. please she prayed silently. She turned on her heels with out another backward glance she left the room and the hospital.
Tony saw her leave. He did not follow her. He felt leaving her alone would be the best choice.
When Jai came back a while later, Bani was nowhere to be seen.
Tony saw him stare at the vacant seat.
'She left Sir…' he said.

Bani were bathing Shradha the telephone rang. She yelled for Kaveri Mausi to pick up the call.
Few minutes later the woman came panting to her room.
'Bieta… Sabh bach gaya…'
Bani's face broke into a huge smile.
'Kya kahan.. Kaveri mausi.. Tony ne kya kahan…'
Tony nahin beita.. Chote sabh ne kahan ki bade sabh ko hosh aagayein..' the woman's face broke into a smile.
Bani picked up Shradha and whirled her around. Shradha giggled happily at Bani.

Jai waited impatiently as the nurses cleared the room. He walked to his father and sat down pulling a chair.
Jai took his hand in his and caressed slowly. 'I am sorry dad.. I have failed you please forgive me…'
Uday Walia's fingers trembled. A tear fell from his eyes.
He tried to speak and Jai stopped him.
'Don't talk… we have all the time in the world to do that.. you take rest…'

Bani was in the kitchen Tony ran to her. 'You are not coming to the hospital…'
'How's he?' Bani asked him.
'Fine Madam… thank God he had pulled through…Jai sir has sent me to take you..'
Bani did not answer him.
Tony looked at questioningly. 'You are not coming?'
'I'll Tony you don't wait for me…' she left the kitchen before Tony asked her further question.
What's happening thought Tony. He had hoped everything would be fine when she insisted to send Tony to collect her from home to see his sir. He saw her walk into the ICU and come out of it with a sad face. Now why is she going to that don't care mode? God! This is all above my understanding.. Sabh ko budhi dena bhagwan he prayed sincerely.

Jai came home to take rest in the afternoon. Bani left to Hospital.
The nurse smiled at her as she approached ICU.
'How is he?' Bani asked.
'He is out of danger..'
'Why he is not shifted to the normal wards…'
'We will. Don't worry.. he is under observation. Tomorrow he will be shifted to the other room.'
Bani smiled. 'Can I see him?'
'You do know we do not allow visitors in the ICU..' said the nurse with a smile.
Bani nodded. 'I won't go in there I'll look at him from far..'
The woman smiled. She took Bani to the room.
Bani stood behind the nurse. He was asleep. And he looked little better she thought. Bani took a step back and said to the nurse. "Thank you..'
The nurse nodded.
She was at the door. Bani heard her name spoken feebly. She stood stunned. Her eyes filled. She couldn't move out side the door.
She heard the nurse talk to him. "You are awake Mr. Walia?'
'Bani…' she heard him again.
'Come here..' it was almost a whisper. Bani couldn't ignore him this time. She turned towards him.
'Do not exert your self Mr. Walia..' Warned the nurse.
'One minute.. give me a minute..' he said feebly.
'Okay..' said the nurse and turned to Bani. 'Don't take more than a minute..'
Bani couldn't nod. The nurse left them and closed the door.
Bani walked slowly to his bed.
Her gaze met his. He lifted his hand to her and she hesitantly caught him. Her hand trembled
The silence fell between them. Bani's heart tightened.
'I am sorry child…' he said. Looking at her.
Bani's eyes filled.
'I am sorry too..' she whispered. A tear fell from her eyes.
Uday Walia did not say anything. He wanted to say many things to her. This was not the place or time.
Bani knew he was anxious to talk to her, but she could wait. She did not want to tire him nor anger the good nurse. She detached his arm form her's caressed his hand before she placed it on the bed.
She stood there for a second and left his room with heavy heart.

Jai got ready to go to the hospital. He took few necessary things with him. He stood at the centre of the hall contemplated the idea to ask her if she wanted to go with him to the hospital Then thought against it.
Uday Walia was shifted to the other ward. He had many visitors in the evening. The nurse had to shout to get them all out of the place.
Jai did not leave his dad alone. When he left Tony stayed with him. He wondered why Bani never bothered to visit the hospital. How could anyone behave so differently? She was at the hospital when his father was serious and she never came to the hospital or asked about him after that.
What he did not know was Bani visited Uday Briefly everyday. She would enquire about him to the nurses and would leave before anyone catches her.

3days later Uday Walia was discharged from the hospital. He was advised to follow a strict diet.
Shradha ran to her dadaji and wrapped her arms around him. She took his hand in her's and walked into the house. Jai saw them walk into the house with a smile.

Bani peeped into his room as Tony and Jai left the room. He was lying on the bed and the door was ajar.
She walked off quickly to the kitchen to prepare a meal for him.
She saw Tony walk into the kitchen and hurriedly take out few vegetables. She knew it was to prepare Uday Walia's dinner.
Before he could take it to the sink to wash she said, 'Tony don't bother I have made dinner for him you can take that for him…'
Tony face lit with a smile.
Bani saw him prepare the tray. He took the food to Uday's room. She saw him leave.
In another minute she saw him return with untouched food.
She frowned looking at the tray.
'He doesn't want to eat ghasspoos… he wants real food..' Tony complained.
'Take this back…. He can't have anything oily..' Bani said firmly.
Tony took the tray and marched towards his room.
Uday Walia saw him with the tray of food and his face broke into a smile.
'Tony you are very fast.. what's for dinner?' he asked enthusiastically.
'Ghass pooss..' Said Tony guiltily.
The old man's face changed. 'Get me real food Tony or else you are dismissed.
'Sir, I went to get real food Bani madam sent me back…' he said looking at his face.
Uday Walia's face softened at the mention of her name.
'Aap khayi yeina sir..'
'Nahin Tony go at once and get me what they made for dinner…'
Tony did not know what to do he stood there for a moment and walked towards the kitchen. Bani sent him back.
Uday saw him approach he sent him out of his room.
Tony stormed out of the room and banged the tray on the kitchen counter.
'I have had enough… aap mein se ek decide karein ki kya khana hein our kya khilana hein..'
Bani threw him a look took the tray and marched towards the room. For a moment she hesitated and then walked in.
Uday Walia looked at her surprised. He hadn't expected her to walk into his room with the tray of food. He stared at her not believing what he was seeing.
She placed the tray in front of him and said in a firm voice, 'This is your food.. You are on diet..'
She left the room with out backward glance.
Uday Walia looked at her leave and then reached for the tray.

Bani got up in the morning made tea for her and prepared Uday's breakfast.
Tony waited for her as she set contents in a plate.
He took them to his master's room to come back with the same speed.
Bani did not waste time to ask what had happened. She took the tray and placed it in front of him. She stood there for a moment making sure he ate, she left. Uday Walia had his breakfast with out much of argument.
Bani instructed Tony about his lunch before she left for work.
As the days progressed his health improved.
Jai called his Office in London and informed them about his resignation. He decided to speak to his father about joining in his father's business.
He put the phone down and walked towards his father's room to tell him about his decision he heard his Dad Argue with Tony.
'What's up he asked?' looking at them.
'Sir kho gulam jamun chahiyein..' Said Tony.
Jai looked at his father surprised. 'Dad you can't have sugary things..'
'Not you too Jai.. one is enough to keep rules ..'
Jai smiled, 'Tony aap ko kya khilatha hein?'
'Mein nahin sir, Bani madam.. sir ka diet wo dekhthihein..'
Jai was surprised he had never seen dad and Bani converse when did this change occur..
'Tony go to the kitchen and sneak one for me with out Bani's seeing..'
'There's no gulab jamun sir..' Tony said.
'Don't you lie to me… Shradha loves JAmun ek leke aao..'
'Sir Bani madam ne gulab jamun banana bandh kiya hein…'
'NAhin…'
'Han sir baby kho bahar se khilathi hein…' Tony defended.
'Tony thum kithna jhoot bolthi ho… go get one for me…'
Jai saw Tony shake his head in exasperation. 'Dad… nahin hogi gulab jamun acha hein nahinhein aap ko tho khana nahin chahiyein..'
'My foot… Tony yeh kiska ghar hein? Muje apni marzi ki cheez kyon nahin milthi… I can't tolerate this…' he yelled.
Tony looked at Jai. Jai looked heaven wards.
Uday Walia stamped his foot in frustration its been days since he got anything that tasted good. His food did not have any flavor. No salt no sugar and not even spicy…
'Tony get me something now or I'll go out and have..' he warned.
He was at the door he stopped on his track at the sight that greeted him. Shradha walked towards him with a plate full of syrupy Jamuns.
She stopped in front of him. 'Dadaji.. for you..'
Jai looked at the little girl and then his father.
Dadaji… take…' she stretched her hand towards him.
''who gave you this? Uday asked looking behind her.
'Ma…'
Uday Walia screened the room. There was no Bani.
He looked at the little girl and asked, ma said anything else?'
'You going to doctor?' she asked looking at him.
Uday took a step back.. Tony get this thing out of here now…'
Tony took the plate hurriedly from her hand.
Uday turned to Shradha.. 'Tell ma no more gulab jamun for dadaji…'
Shadhu like gulab jamun ' she said.
'Han… Shadhu can have jamun….' Uday laughed.. taking her hand in his and kissing.
Bani had sent the message clear, thought Jai. The woman is smart.
Tony left the room with the Jamuns and Shradha followed him.
Jai turned to his father. 'Dad I need to tell you something…'
Uday looked at Jai.
'I have decided to resign the job in London…' Jai studied his father's face. He looked calm and not surprised at his decision.
'No Jai.. no more sacrificing.. you can leave to London.' He said looking straight in his eyes.
Jai looked at his father stunned.
'I'll not force you to live your life to my liking. You are free…'
