At Bani's house
"Ab kya kareen, jab bachoon par zoor nahi chaltha toh koi kya kar sak tha hai koi?" Tina said in dismay to her friend Padma.
"Main toh bari mushkill se ghar se nikalthi hoon, mere bahu hospital main hain, uski stomach main ulcer hai, to ajj kal main hi appni dono pothioon(grand daughters)ka kayal rak thi hoon"Padma said chanting
"Haan, badi kush kismat ho, humhari ghar main toh bachoon ki kilkari sunhe hue sadiyaan hogayeen hain" Tina said, obviously upset.
At that very moment Bani walked in, happily "Mummyji!" She bent down and touched her feet.
Tina rolled her eyes then "Kush raho"
Bani looked over at the women sitting next to her mother-in-law, it was Padma one of Tina's best friends. Seeing Bani come in Padma excused herself and left.
"So what should I make for lunch mummyji?" Bani asked while taking her sweater off, straightening her white sari out.
"Ajj badi jaldi agaye, case katham hogaya kya?" Tina asked in a sharp tone, which Bani quickly sensed.
"haan, voh main case jeet gaye mummyji" Bani said being happy, she headed toward the kitchen as Tina followed behind her.
"Well that's nice for you, good. So Sumit told me that from tomorrow your changing courts, your going into business court from tomorrow." Tina sat down on the small kitchen table.
"Ji mummyji, aur patha hai, mere salary bhi increase horahi hi"Bani said proud
"Kitne aur?"Tina asked
"Abhi 32,000 hai, aur business court main, 51,000 hai" Bani looked at her mother-in-law hopeful. Bani turned the stove on and began preparing lunch.
Tina responded in attitude "huf..kush toh asse ho rahi thi jaise patha nahi kithne paise nahi increase kardiye, maine phele bola tha, ki raise mango, but you. You just don't listen to me. He's my friend mummyji"(she said mockingly) "Meri ek bahu aur voh bhi assi"
Bani looked down, listening to her mother-in-law. Tears formed in her eyes, but she continued to cook. 20 minutes later Bani lay lunch on the table. She was trying to control her anger, she decided to head back to work where she knew she would fell at ease. But unfortunately her cell rang and jay told her that she didn't have to come, as it was her last day she should enjoy at home. Bani huffed and puffed to herself, now what was she going to do? She called Tina to lunch, and shortly her father-in-law, Manish joined in too.
"tum nahi kaogi Bani?" Manish asked lovingly
"Nahi papaji main teek hoon" Bani said putting on a smile.
**This was Bani's perfect family, her mother-in-law Tina, her father-in-law Manish, her sister-in-law Sonam, her brother-in-law Saagar, and last but not the least her husband SUMIT. Well not so perfect, is it? Bani tended not to notice the minor cracks in the road, focusing more on the big picture. And her her opinion the big picture was perfect.**
After they ate lunch, Bani cleaned up and headed for her room. She dusted the entire house, and then headed for Saagar, and Sonam's room which needed a good scrub down. After she was done with her household chores, she changed into a pink sari, and then sat on her bed, resting for about a minute, until she saw a pile of bills on the study table. She sighed and went to the table, sorting and making checks out for the bills. She looked at her remaining bank balance. It read 43,000 rupees. Bani shook her head at her low bank balance. She realized the time, and grabbed her bag rushing out the door to pick up Sonam, and Saagar.
"Hey babhi" Sonam said getting into the car, as she threw her bag in the back seat.
"Saagar kahan hai?"Bani asked looking out the window for him.
"Oh, Saagar went with his friends to the movies, he made me give him 300 rupees". Sonam said frowing
Bani began driving, as she went into deep thought.
"Babhi, tomorrow is your first day at business court right?" Sonam asked
"Yes it is, I'm very excited and nervous at the same time"
"Babhi can we go to the beach for a hour, please! Just so we can talk." Sonam requested
"Fine, but just for one hour". Bani said firm
Bani parked her car near the beach and Sonam and Bani headed toward the water.
"Bain babhi, ajj college main voh application mila tha, aur maine bhi ek liya hai, kya app use pleas sign"
Bani cut Sonam off.
"Just stop it Sonam, you and I both know where this conversation is going. You know I would love to sign your application, but you also know that we cant afford it. Paying for you to go to college here, is hard enough, let alone sending you to college in California! Look Sonam, tum bachi nahi ho, you have to understand we're just a middle class family we cant afford this." Bani said talking calmly.
"But babhi, bhai has his own business, and you are a lawyer why can't we afford this?"Sonam said on the verge of tears.
"Come on Sonam! I'm a student lawyer, and your brother has a clothing boutique. He makes 2 lakh rupee's one month, and then for 6 months straight he makes nothing…Do you really think we can afford to send someone to California? Please, just try understanding, we are the only two that earn in the family, don't start again with me Sonam"
"Me! Why is it always that its my fault, why is it my fault I have a dream, and the wish to persue it" Sonam began to cry, as she complained about her life.
"Sonam! I love the fact that you have dreams of studying abroad, but you have to understand that we cant afford to send you there".
"How is it MY fault that we don't have any money"? Sonam said as she ran back to the car, Bani saw her call a taxi, and she was gone. All Bani could do was helplessly watch.
"Is it My fault?" Bani asked herself as she headed home.
Bain dove home, when she entered her house, she saw Sonam was already there, and telling her sob story to the family. When Bani walked into the living room, she saw her families eyes looking at her questionably. Tina spoke first.
"Why did you have to tell her that?"Tina asked while she comforted Sonam who was still crying.
"But it's the truth mummyji, we can't lie to her and tell her that we can send her to California, when the truth is that we can't." Bani didn't see any harm in telling a grown girl the truth.
"oh please Bani lets not get started, its very simple Sonam will go to California"
"Par Mummyji!"
"But nothing Bani, she is my daughter, and I will decide where she goes to school"
Then why don't you pay for it, Bani thought
"Ji mummyji" The only thing that came out of Bani's mouth
Later that night
Sumit-(walking in the room)-So how was your day?
Bani-(walked up to him, and hugged him)-Good.
Sumit-(letting go of his wife)-So what happened with Sonam?
Bani-(sighed)-So you heard.
Sumit-Well, I personally thought it was funny
Bani-(looking at Sumit)-Funny!! How is that funny, Sumit! Where are we going to get 2 lakh rupee's from?
Sumit-Let me go change…
Sumit came out of the bathroom, and saw Bani upset in bed. He crawled into bed, and snuggled in next to her. He wrapped his arms around her.
Sumit-So what did you say to ma?
Bani-What was I supposed to say?
Sumit-Did you tell her that we couldn't afford it?
Bani-That's what I told Sonam, but she cried her sob story to mummyji, making me look like the bad guy.
Sumit-Well, I'll talk to ma tomorrow.
Bani-(Bani looked the other way)she started again today
Sumit-(moving her face, toward him)-Bani! Why do you mind?
Bani-(bani got out of bed)-Why do you always ask me why I mind? Of course I mind, she does fine, until Padma aunty comes over and starts bragging about her grandchildren, and then mummyji just starts all over again. She read me the mere ghar main toh bachoon ki kilkari act…She makes me feel horrible Sumit, can't you talk to her? Its not even like we don't want kids, but it just doesn't happen. Is that my fault too?
Sumit-(got out of bed and walked over to her)-Come on Bani, its not your fault you cant conceive.
Bani-(Bani looked at him in disgust, but she kept her mouth closed)
So this was Bani's perfect life. She loved her family, her job, and most of all her life. But days like these just put a damper to her perfect life. After meeting Sumit at a coffee shop one fine day, she really could say her life was perfect. Sumit and Bani dated for 6 months, until Sumit proposed and Bani accepted. Bani loved Sumit's family, and everything about him. Bani hated families that separated, and so she choose family court in law school. But she soon repented the decision of joining the family court, the thing she loved the most, the word families was changing day by day as the court brought up strange situations causing Bani to think.

The next day started out relatively the same, Bani woke Sonam up, got her to college and then made her way to Court. Bani was both excited and nervous at the same time. She didn't have any cases today, but she would be watching one from the stands. Bani would be getting paid her normal salary, not the increase, since she would only be watching, taking notes, and studying new business law books all for 3 months. When Bani told Tina of this upon receiving her salary at the end of that month, Tina was mad!!
"One whole month, It's been an entire month, you've been gone day in and day out! And at the end of it you get the same salary!! When you came home that day you were raving about your new salary, and now!!You bring me home the salary and nothing!!Its the same as before!!I told you before, don't get too friendly with your boss!!This is how they take advantage of you!!!They keep your salary the same!!!kush!!Because of you, I told Sonam we would be able to send her to California!!!Now what will I tell my bachi, hmm what will I tell Sonam??!!!" Tina said, she was running out of breathe, and so sat down on the sofa.
"Mummyji!"Bani shrieked, she ran to the kitchen and got her a glass of water…
Bani gave Tina the glass of water, Tina breathed heavily, and Bani panicked. In the meantime Sumit entered, and saw his mother in a distressed condition…
"Kya hua ma?" he ran to her
Tina was huffing "Voh, Bani…" She broke out into tears… "Bani…ko main sumjane ki koshish kar rahi thi…ki usshe assa court nahi badal na chahiye tha, jab ki usshe patha tha ki usski salary nahi badalne wali thi…ab tu hi soch beta Bani sara din court main rehthi hai…Aur mujhe ghar ka sara kam karna partha hai…iss umar main toh kam kahan hota hai.." Tina lied, still sobbing…
Sumit looked up at Bani, as he was holding his mother close to himself. "Yeh ma kya kaherahi hai"? he looked at her questionably
"Main…" Bani attempted to defend herself
"Ab jhoot math bolna bahu" Tina cut her off..
"Tum under jao!" Sumit ordered…
"Liken" Bani was controlling herself from crying…
"Bani!" Sumit ordered again
Bani ran upstairs into her room. It wasn't like Bani to feel bad at something her mother-in-law had said, but honestly it was seldom that her mother-in-law did say something to her. But today, her mother-in-law had out rightly lied to Sumit in front of her. It was true that she didn't come home to make lunch, but Bani woke up earlier to clean the house, and cut the vegetables for lunch. Something even stranger with what happened downstairs was that Sumit believed his mother!!Bani never imagined that Sumit would ever doubt her…
As this day was a first for Bani, in terms of experience her days got worse, she didn't know why but Tina always had some lie up her sleeve to tell Sumit. Bani would be shocked, but as her nature…she would remain quiet and cry late at night when Sumit would be fast asleep.
One day after Bani came back from court, she saw Tina crying and playing with a little plastic doll…
"Mummyji, app yeh…aur roo(cry) kyun rahi hai?" Bani slowly walked over to her, and sat down next to her…
"Beta…Kya kahoon..(continued to play with the doll)…mere liye ek kam karegi…kal doctor ke hokar ajja…koi toh illaj hoga jisse tu maa ban sak thi hai" Tina said with hope in her voice
"Ji mummyji, main kal hi doctor ke hokar athi hoon" Bani said, as she looked at the cute doll, in Tina's hand…
The next day Bani went to the doctor…
"Hi Neelam"
"Hi Bani, kaise ho…Tum yahan hope all is well?" Dr.Neelam
"Haan, voh main conceive nahi kar pari"
"Oh, I see so how long has it been since you have been married?"
"2 years, and in 1 week it will be 3 years"
"Okay, well let me take some tests and we'll see what's the problem" Neelam said with a smile.
Neelam took some tests on Bani, and 30 minutes later Bani came out of the lab, and sat down in front of Neelam.
"so, hows everything?" Bani asked scared
Neelam chuckled "well, I don't have the reports yet, it might take a couple of days but when I do get the reports I'll let you know, aur haan, before I forget…Send your husband in tomorrow, just a few tests on him too okay"
"Umm, Sumit! I mean why would he need to give any tests?"
"well, in case you forgot Bani, it takes two people to conceive, just send him in I promise I'll send him back" She said laughing..
Bani was also laughing and soon let her self out of Neelam's cabin. Bani walked down the strip toward the door, her mind in a deep thought she bumped into a nurse, she turned around to say sorry, and ended up bumping into a doctor, She slipped almost crashing into a medical cart. Just when she found herself suspended a few inches above the ground being held tightly by robust arms. She shut her eyes waiting to fall on the laminate floor. When she didn't fall she opened her eyes, and helped her self up. The sudden opening of the main door created a ventilation, a strong wind blew, Bani's dupatta flew over her face. As she falied to see the kind man that had helped her up… The man was called and so he turned without a single word, and Bani failed to thank him…. The door closed and Bani fixed her dupatta, heading for the door.
Back at home
"Arre, Bani beta…How was your doctors appointment" Tina said with a perky voice, as she watched Sonam set the table.
Bani smiled "The appointment was good, she took some tests, and asked that Sumit come tomorrow."
Sumit walked down the stairs "Me! Doctor, come on Bani, you know I hate going to the hospital." Sumit whined.
"Sumit! You will go tomorrow, you have to." Tina said with an authority in her voice.
"Ji ma" Sumit said, sitting at the dinning table.
After dinner, Sonam and Saagar along with Tina and Manish sat in the living room discussed JS anniversary party.
"We should have a huge bash!" Sonam said excited
"I second that" Saagar said stuffing his face with kaju kathli's that Bani made for him.
"I agree" Tina said, with a huge smile.
Saagar and Sonam looked at each other in astonishment…Their mom had said yes to a party…They found that very strange, but took the opportunity as it came…
"Okay mom, We'll need some money, and caterers" Sonam said smiling.
"Chalo, ab soothe hain" Tina walked up to the roof, and looked to the sky and prayed out loud "Hey bagwan, mujhe bus ek cheese chahiyeh…ek potha ya pothi (a grandson, or grand daughter)..Ab Bani doctor keg aye hai..toh kuch umeed bane hai…mujhe nirash math karna bagwan…Baki jo app chathein hain..usshe hi main manoongi…"
And with that prayer, Tina went to sleep, she left the roof area, Bani came out of hiding.
In her head-Mummyji really wants a grandchild, (she looked up at the sky)…I'll go with what ever you wish god, if I haven't had kids for 3 years, its probably because I wasn't destined to…I'm really waiting for a sign…Can you give me one…? Or have you already…and did I miss it…
*and with that it began to rain…and thunder loudly*
"Does that mean I missed the sign, Damn..(still looking up) well, I will be more alert for the next one..okay god!!" Bani ran into the house…content with her day….laughing to herself. Bani went to her room, seeing Sumit watch the rain fall, she went to him, and hugged him from behind…
Sumit-(turning around)-Agaye tum?
Bani-I know you hate doctors but it would mean the world to me if you went….
Sumit-I know…I am going!!
Bani-So how was work?
Sumit-(sighing) No sales
Bani-(patting his back)-That's okay…kabhie kabhie dry months athehain…
Sumit-(moving away)-Kabhi Kabhie!!!Its been 5 months since I have made a single sale!!
Bani-Well…Maybe that's why they say you should finish college…
Sumit-Bani!!Just because you went to law school, and I tried to continue my family business, don't make this seem like…like…(out of frustration) good night!!
Sumit switched of the lights, and lay quiet on the bed, his hands across his chest.
Sumit never finished past the second year of college, but Bani didn't find that out until there engagement, and by then Bani didn't see what difference it made. I guess when you're in love everything seems rosy… Its not that Bani regretted her marriage decision, its just that she wished her husband was a bit more professional. Bani's wedding was not a lavish affair, but instead a court marriage, since Bani was an orphan. Her parents died when she was 2 and left her in the custody of one of her mothers best friends. But unfortunately when Bani was 5 she got separated from the women who took care of her.
The next day Sumit forgot about the argument that Bani and him had, and started the day fresh by going to the hospital to get his tests done. Neelam was happy to see that Sumit had come, and she had conducted some tests on him. Sumit didn't feel so well, after his visit to the doctor, so he decided to go home instead. Saagar and Sonam didn't have college that day, so they spent the day planning Sumit and Bani's anniversary party. On the other hand Tina began knitting clothes, sure that Bani would be bearing her grandchild soon.
The week passed by, and Bani hoped her anniversary would bring extreme change in her life. She prayed everyday, and 2 days before her anniversary she got a call saying that Tina was hospitalized. Bani ran for the hospital, yet something very strange happened to her.
"Which room is Tina Sood in?" Bani asked in a worried voice.
"room 324" the nurse responded.
"room 342" Bani repeated and dashed off, looking for the room.
"No, room 324" The nurse called out, but Bani failed to listen.
Bani finally found the room, and went inside. She saw a women in the bed, her faced turned opposite of Bani. Bani walked up close to the bed, and put her hand on the women's hand. Bani's hand tingled as her skin met the skin of the women's…This wasn't her mother-in-laws hand? But the women turned around now confirming that she indeed wasn't her mother-in-law. She looked hard at the woman's face…it seemed vaguely familiar. Yet she couldn't remember ever seeing it. The womens eyes looked back at Bani, and began to swell as tears began collecting in her eyes. Bani came out of the moment, and took her hand off of the woman's.
"I'm…sorry…mas…I mean anuty..." Bani began to leave the room, but something made her look back…That face…Bani decided not to trouble herself and went out of the room.
Tears fell down the woman's eyes, as she attempted to lift her hand up, trying to call Bani back…Meanwhile a nurse walked in seeing the women attempt to lift her hand.
Nurse-(amazed that the woman's hand was a few centimeters elevated)-DOCTOR!!!DOCTOR!!!
The doctor came rushing in…
Doctor-What happened??
Nurse-Yeh! She…lifted her hand, and she's crying!!
Doctor-What! She lifted her hand??Was anyone in here?
Nurse-Yes…There was some lady, but she left…I came running after her because she heard the wrong room number, one of her relatives is in room 324"
Doctor-Well, let me speak to her family…maybe they know the lady who was in this room…(on the phone, with one of the woman's relatives)-Hello, yes Mr.Walia well, Mrs.Walia had an incredible recovery….She moved her hand, and I have taken some tests, which show that she is recovering. Some lady was in her room and after that she had improved, I think that lady had some affect on her.
Mr.Walia-That's great! Well can I find that lady to help my wife?
Doctor-Off course, and I think that would really help…Your wife has been here for 21 years, and in 21 years she hasn't moved a single limb…That lady might be the only way to get your wife to recover.
Mr.Walia-Well do you have any information on that lady?
Doctor-yes, she has a relative in the hospital in room 324, if you can come here and talk to her, she might be of some help to you…
Mr.Walia-Okay, I will be there soon…
In room 324
"Mummyji, are you okay…And why are you in the hospital?"
"Oh I'm fine beta, just a minor headackh and I fell so Sonam dragged me to the hospital, in fact I had gotten my discharge papers…and we're going home now…" Tina said…
"Appne toh mujhe dara hi diya tha" Bani said with a relief.
"Chale?"
"Chaloo" Bani said, helping Tina off the bed.
Mr.Walia-(in room 324)-Yahan toh koi bhi nahi hai!
Doctor-Shayad un loogon ko discharge milgaya…
Mr.Walia-(ran his hands threw his hair)-yahi chance tha, Krishna ko teek karne ka…ab voh bhi haath se…
Doctor-Listen Mr.Walia, we will look her up in the medical records…and as soon as we find her, I promise we will give you her information…
Mr.Walia left in a hurry, mad that he was soo close to the only person who could help his wife…
Nurse-Doctor, Should I find out that lady's information?
Doctor-Humneh koi searching agency nahi koli hai!! Appna kam karo…okay…
Nurse-Ji…
Two Days later…
Sumit left early for work that day, and therefore was unable to wish Bani a happy marriage anniversary…Bani too went to court…but they both promised that they would be home early…
"Do you have to go bhabhi?" Sonam requested
"I have to go Sonam, but I promise I will be back by 500pm..okay" She said, taking her bag and leaving out the front door.
Bani didn't have any cases to observe, or any new law books she HAD to read, so she decided to go home…she was in a really good mood, and was excited about her 3rd anniversary…But little did Bani know this would have been her last…Her cell phone rang*
**Well I hope no one is confused, cause well it is a bit confusing…
