Bani's attitude towards Ganga bugged me, what the heck, if someone has cancer will the person misbehave with the daughter, so that the daughter starts hating the mother and go to live with her adopted parents? Somehow I could not digest that fact, I always feel the daughter should have a good memory, a memory she will cherish and death, who can predict death, even the greatest astrologers fail to predict it and doctors are mere mortals…This ff I plan to write a short one..

The Flowers of Spring
Bani sat down correcting the homework copies of the children, sitting in her favourite position on the bed, the feet covered by the quilt, back leaning onto the cushion against the wall….as she corrected the copies, she kept an eye on her daughter Jeeya, who was playing with blocks sitting on the mat on the floor, whenever Jeeya was getting stuck she was looking towards her mother, Bani was directing her accordingly….
Mummy, Jeeya cried out once again, nehi ho raha hai…
Patience Jeeya patience, phirse koshish karo ho jayega….
Mujhse yeh sab nehi hota, Jeeya got up….
Bani looked at her 6 year old daughter, baitho Jeeya, I will join you just now, bus aur do copy baki hai….
Tabh tak mai Tom & Jerry dekhu…
Nehi, tumhara aajka quota ho giya hai Jeeya....
Colours karu....
Only after you complete this puzzle….
But I hate puzzles…Jeeya stomped her feet…
Bani smiled, as a girl Jeeya was full of energy, she hated to sit around, but in this cold weather, Bani could not permit her to go out, though it was not too late only 5 in the evening….
Bani lived with her daughter Jeeya in the small town of Narkhanda in Himachal Pradesh. Jeeya loved to play with the children of Bani's colleagues who lived in the quarters around their own, Jeeya loved company, she was a boisterous child and in these winter months, Bani had difficulty in keeping her home. Being in the Himalayas the winters were bad, the school was about to close anyway just before Christmas Holidays for 2 months when most of children left with their parents to visit their native village / relatives etc., that was the most difficult period for Bani, keeping Jeeya within the barriers of the four walls was next to impossible. Being lean season there was very few tourist inflow too during those months, the fruit orchards which surrounded Narkhanda also had no activities, the owners preferred to stay in the plains and the tress looked barren without fruits & leaves….
Bani had nowhere to go, though she took her daughter to Shimla during Christmas for two days as lately it has become very fashionable to spend Christmas in Shimla tourist inflow became high during that week upto new year, things became expensive, beyond Bani's reach but Bani did not want to deprive her child the most looked forward vacation they enjoyed once a year. They checked into YWCA, while Bani handed over the woolen baby sets she made during the year to the owner of the stall, who sold it for her in turn for a commission to the tourists, Bani & Jeeya went about visiting different stalls, eating, playing with unknown children till it was late into the night, on 26th December afternoon they returned to Narkhanda with a heavy heart to be confined to the four walls of their quarter most of the time for next 2 months. For this period, Bani bought, borrowed different board games, puzzles, colours, story books etc etc., to keep Jeeya and herself entertained.
As Bani guided Jeeya to put the last piece of the block in its place, she heard the back door opening….
Kaun Masi, called out Bani….
Aur kaun hoga beti, replied the Himachali woman as she came into the room…
Bani smiled at her, she was already covered from head to toe….Masi abhi se yeh haal pura mausam toh abh baki hai…
Keya karu, buddi ho rahi hu, khun thanda ho raha hai, aur yeh le Jeeya tera achar, mai aur nehi ja sakta thanda mai….
Mil gayi, Jeeya's eyes glittered, seeing the mango chutney she had wanted so badly, the shopkeeper had said it will come by the 4 p.m. bus….
Mil gayi, do ghanta mai baithi thi uss buddhe kharoos ke pass, ki woh kisi aur ko na bech de, jaisahi bus ayi, maal utra, packing khula ke layi ho beta….
Thank you, thank you….Jeeya jumped up…..aaj paratha, aaj paratha, achar ke saath paratha…Jeeya cried….
Masi looked at Bani, she nodded…
Theek hai beti, mai taiyari kar deti hu, lekin tu bana lena, mera sar dukh….matlab aaj tera tabiyaat toh theek hai na….
Ha Masi aaj kafi achha lag raha hai, theek hai aap taiyari karo, mai ati hu fry karne…
Aja Jeeya tu mere saath aloo chhilega, paratha me dalna hai na…
Ha ha masi, aapna paratha khud banayungi…As Masi and Jeeya left for the kitchen, Bani switched on the TV, Bani's only connection to the outside world, she surfed the news channels, every channel had a breaking news of its own, which was mostly rape, murder & cricket, Bani went over to Animal Planet, she loved watching these channels, they were informative and stress less, unlike serials and news channels….
Bani soon got engrossed watching the lioness teaching her cubs to hunt in the jungles of Africa, when her mobile phone suddenly started ringing…
Seeing the number….Bani picked up promptly…
Ha Doctor sahaab boliye…
Bani, can you come to my clinic tomorrow after school….
Yes of course lekin koi problem hai keya…
Bani could feel the doctor hesitating, Bani I am little worried about your hemoglobin level…
Oh that, I know doctor, I have this problem, maybe I should do a course of iron tablets once again….
I will expect you around 3 o'clock then?
Yes doc…
+++
Bani gave a sigh of relief, her feeling of weakness was due to low hemoglobin then, the doctor was a retired Army doctor, who now practiced not for money but for the love of his profession. In this god forsaken place he acted as a general practitioner, gynea, child specialist, all rolled into one, many of his patients could not even afford his fees, that did not stop Dr Siddharth from his mission…
