Chap 6:
It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents, except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets, rattling along the house-tops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.
Walking through the never ending rain was a totally wet figure….
some times stumbling slightly, undoubtedly under the influence of alcohol.
He looked at the opened door, then squinted at the two dials he saw on his wrist instead of one…faintly he could see the time it was 2.00am…errr or maybe 3:00.
Swaying he walked in and saw two women sitting on the couch in the sitting room.
He rubbed his eyes and the two merged into one…..
His wife was sitting with a worried look on her face, then seeing him she instantaneously got up and rushed to his aid as he missed a step.
He stopped her by lifting up his left hand, the other on his head that was spinning.
He somehow managed to get up the stairs into his room and changed to his nightgown with difficulty…
Then completely knocked out the moment his head touched the pillow.
He did not notice the turning of the doorknob, the very quiet chime of her anklets as she entered his room picking up his untidily strewn clothes, putting it in the laundry bin.
She slowly covered him with a quilt when he shivered in the cold, wet night.
He had not known her arrival nor did he notice her departure. The only thing he felt was the warmth of the quilt as he slowly slipped into a deep, dreamless slumber.
Like the goldfinch on a lonely laburnum tree whose seeds had all fallen out one by one, she was slowly without his notice entering his life, silently taking care of his needs without letting him know of her presence.
Taking all the harsh words he threw at her and in return only caring for him in her own silent way.
Every time he insulted her, demeaned her she would quietly listen taking it all silently, without as much as a single retort.
He did not notice her red puffy eyes every time he barked at her for every other thing; he did not notice his room go from a chaotic mess to a neat and tidy room in minutes, nor did he notice her silently slinking in with a tray of egg sandwiches and juice (with aspirin on the side of course) as he woke up morning after morning with a terrible hangover, nor did he notice her slowly cover him with a quilt every time he was knocked out cold on the bed.
He did not notice the makeover his haphazard wardrobe had after she arranged all his clothes systematically after he had left for office.
He did not notice her waiting for him to return every night getting worried by the second as he returned totally sloshed.
It was like she was slowly mending the pieces of his life that had gone totally gone out of track after Pia's deceit.
She was like an invisible entity in his life, totally non existent for him. Occasionally just a puppet he called his wife in public as he pulled her along at parties plastering a fake smile on his face every time the cameras were pointed their way.
Bani was like a nonentity for him in his life, where as in real she was the only one who was preventing it from falling to pieces.
************************************************************ *****
'Chandni muskuraye, jab hawa kuch kahe.
Samjho meri sadaye hai tere saath mein,
Jo Ghana ho fiza mein andhera
Layenge hum Savere Tere Liye.
Le chalein Le chalein
Yaadon key ye kaafile
Jayenge hum jahan
Ye zameen aasma mile.'

She was staring at the rain pouring in torrents outside her window.
Her small closet sized room was enveloped in darkness slightly illuminated by the moonlight flooding in through the window.
Bani was thinking about her life.
How it had changed only due to her sister's immature decision. She had long forgiven Pia for such was her nature.
She had also been thinking of her husband, the person who treated her like filth.
Demeaning her at chance he got.
To the world they were happily married, but to him she was an undesirable piece of rubbish lying in a corner of his house.
An unwanted wife in an unwanted relationship. Yet he refused to give her divorce.
He wanted to cause her pain….but she knew he was just trying to take out his frustration and anger on someone… So she bore everything.
'Narm budhon ki rimjhim,
Pehli baarish ke din…
Dopehar garmiyon ki,
Shamein woh sard si.
Ruth koi, koi mausam,
Koi ghadi……
Saath mein humko hardam
Tum paoge…
Le chalein le chalein.'
She looked at the rain….it had so many memories attached to it…
It was in this same rain she had first come to Bombay. Unknowingly stepping in to the house of that man whom she was frightened to death of, but also cared a lot about……The first thing she had noticed about him were his eyes…..
Sometimes they were as grey as steel specially when he was scrutinizing something, whenever he took a major decision in a meeting or sealed the most important deal of the year, it was the same steely grey gaze that made her falter in her steps, sending a shiver down her spine.
They were as stormy as the rainy skies, whenever he was angry….she really got to see a lot of that nowadays…..She chuckled sadly….
When he was sad they would be as cold as steel as if he had enveloped his sadness with a shield of anger.
But only once in her life had she seen his eyes go the palest blue…..like the sunny skies in summer…..it was only for a few hours because after that it was as if he had totally turned into ice king….
The only time she had seen him smile…..His wedding day…..in the mandap before lifting her veil to fill her maang…. It was as if it was some other man other than the Jai Walia that she knew that had sat in that mandap……..
Oh!!!... she would give up everything she had to call her own just to see that Jai Walia again…..Maybe someday she would.
It had become her reason for living. To bring back that Jai Walia….To lessen his pain….To heal the wounds inflicted by Pia….
To see him that happy again…at least for a moment.
She felt it was her fault that his life was ruined….if only she had not listened to her dad and come to Bombay after his death, then maybe Jai Walia would have been happier…..
She put a hand outside the window, watching as the rain drops felt cold to her skin….soothing her, calming her, taking away all her worries atleast for today….maybe, maybe by some rare chance she would be able to sleep peacefully knowing that he is happy at least in his sleep…a place where all worries disappear…that is for a while…..
