Happy Karva chauth to those celebrating it. Sab ko apna chand mile. 😳 😳 😳

Im a gujju so we dont really do this for our husbands but I just find the whole concept so sweet. If my future hubby is worth it...then who knows, may just take the risk of starving myself the whole day. 😛

Reemz we gujju have those fasting days in the month of shravan, you know Sol Somvar etc. and Astami in Navratri too, usually the married woman fast on those days for this reason. I haven't done any of stuff for a long time, but I will get to see lots of Hindu Punjabi ladies at my mandir tonight, all dressed up with their pooja thalis and doing the pooja.

Thanks and happy KArva Chauth to to everyone who is keeping the vrath.

Also piku, thanks for all the info, but I would like to point out a few things -

I am form UP and the customs and traditions of Karva chauth are different from what you mentioned and I would like to share that with you.
We do not have sargi and baya. We do not look at the moon with a chalni (sieve) and then at our husband. Those are basically punjabi customs.
We eat kheer in the night before karva chauth before sleeping. That is said to help go through the next day without water.
In the evening before sunset we pray gaud mata and she is also traditionally made with cowdung like you mentioned. but these days we also use wet soil from outside (especially for people like me in the US)
During the prayer, we have the two sets of athyawari (which is 8 pooris - 4 sweet and 4 salty - with sooji halwa) One is for the married woman and one is for gaud mata.
When the moon is out, we see the moon and give it the pieces of athyawari from our set and water. It is done 5 times. then, we see the moon and drink a small sip of water.
After that we touch our husbands feet and give the athyawari that was with gaud mata to him and have water from his hands.
The husband and the wife have to each eat their athyawari for dinner.

So, thats how we do it... I just thought I would share with you.

Is it?? I cant remember my mum fasting for dad, well she's never told me about it. I dont think there is custom where wives go without food AND drink the whole day though is it?

Reemz,

lots of parts of india have different customs. I am gujju too and I remember my mom doing some pooja (Kevda Trij) where they do pooja with kevda leaves in the afternoon. But its not completely without food/drink. Most gujju's take fruit and water/milk post the pooja and then they have to do jagran in the night.

Also Sindhi's do something called tijri (can be done by unmarried/ non-engaged girls too). Basically very similar in concept to Karva Chauth, but just different customs.

--

All - happy karva chauth to everyone especially the ones who are fasting. I pray that all your wishes come true.

Rivs is right, Jaya Parvati vrath before Shravan begins is for that. Five days of fasting culminating in jagran. I never did them, used to get sick staying up all night. And there is a version for girls too, we called it Alluna.
