He sat in his battered Maruti smoking Marlborough whiling away time until she arrived. In the dark corner of the street away from the measly street lamp that cast dull glow in the deserted street, he waited for her…his angel. He saw her as his angel. She was beautiful…full red lips, curvy body and those high heels that she favoured. She made him feel good…she was always so gentle with him. He loved how she would whisper words into his ears just to get him worked up and today he would see her again after such a long time. He had been upset because she had made him wait him too long but as soon as he had heard her sultry voice, he had forgiven her.
Finished smoking his fifth cigarette, he glanced at his watch for the umpteenth time. Almost time for her to arrive, giving himself a quick look in the car mirror he smoothed his hair into down. Better not light another cigarette, as she hated smoking. A black car pulled up with dark tinted windows. No one looking into the car could see the occupants of the car. A window rolled down, a well-manicured hand with nails painted red extended towards him. "Have you got the information that I wanted?" The owner of the sultry voice asked. Picking up the package lying on the passenger seat, he picked it up and put it in her extended hand.
"I hope you are happy, now my payment…" he drawled.
"Yes your payment, just a moment."
She put the package down and picked up the gun with silencer next to her purse. Aiming it at him quickly she pulled the trigger, the bullet going straight through the side of his head. He toppled over onto the steering wheel as blood oozed out. Waiting a minute or so she looked around and through the mirror to make sure there was no one about. She got out of the car and quickly put two or three small white packets in his jacket pocket and got back in the car and sped off.

Jai Walia was woken up in the middle of the night by his cell phone ringing. Picking up the offending piece of technology, he leaned over and turned on the lamp.
"Hello Satish, kya hua, kyun phone kiya?" Jai growled into the phone, sounding highly annoyed as he struggled to wake up.
"Mr Walia, aap jaldi yahaan aiyee, Dr Mishra ki lab…" Satish never got to finish as Jai Walia now wide awake, barked into the phone, "Ok, I am coming down. Don't touch anything and don't call anyone until I get there."
Quickly pulling on a pair of jeans and a shirt, Jai grabbed his phone and car keys and knocked on Aditya's room. Telling him quietly to get dressed and come with him, Jai went downstairs and into the courtyard and reversed his car out waiting for Adi to join him.
Reaching the Walia Industries complex on the outskirts of Mumbai, the security guard opened up the gate as soon as he recognized Jai Walia. Jai stopped the car right in front of the main entrance and handed the keys to one of the security guards to park the car in the reserved spot.
Satish was waiting in the lobby for them and filled them in about the break in the lab where Dr Mishra was working. Dr Mishra was one of a group of senior scientist working at Walia Industries on a coveted project, named Divyamsu (Divine Rays), to create energy source using natural resources that were cheap and available abundantly. With the global warming and the its effect on the environment companies all over the globe were in pursuit of creating, finding an alternate energy source…green energy source, an eco friendly alternative to nuclear, coal and oil.
Only last night before going home, Jai had popped into the lab and chatted with Dr Mishra about the project. Dr Mishra had been very excited at the discovery he had made and had told him that may be in a week's time they would be able to do first lab test.
Satish opened the lab door and Jai dismayed at the sight in front of him. There were papers everywhere, along with broken glass, smashed up lab equipment and pools of liquid everywhere. Satish grabbed Jai's arm before he could walk in, "Mr Walia, it's not safe to walk in as the liquid may be hazardous. I have a team waiting to check it out as soon as you give permission."
"Ok get them to test the liquid and let me know before they clean it up. I don't want any of the papers thrown away as they may be important to Dr Mishra. If his PC is salvageable make sure the hard drive and disks are locked up. And Satish I want a full security report asap, names times people went in and out of the lab after Dr Mishra left. I will be in my office." Jai gave the orders before he and Adi left.
Pouring coffee into two mugs, Jai handed one to Adi before taking seat on the couch in his office.
"I guess we should go and look at video tapes recorded by the security camera. There was one in the lab right Jai?" Adi asked as he drank the bitter coffee.
"Yes, I had them installed in the labs once we started working on the project." Jai replied, his forehead knitted tight as he tried to make sense of the vandalized lab.
"I guess you will have to tell Dixit & Dev Venture Fund about the lab, after all they provided the funding for the research." Adi brought up the subject even though he knew Jai avoided at all cost having to deal with the venture company. Bani Dixit and Jai Walia were not on speaking term ever since the unfortunate incidence six months ago. It wasn't likely Bani would forgive Jai's indiscretion so easily.
XXXXX
The cleaning team had cleaned up the lab efficiently. Unfortunately, the pc and diskette were totally destroyed…the papers too were unsalvageable, as the toxic liquid had soaked through them. Dr Mishra could not be found. He wasn't answering his phone and he had not returned to the house last night. The housekeeper said he had called at 8 PM to tell her that he would be home at 9 but never showed up. Beside Dr Mishra, Vikram, his lab assistant did not turn up for work and is missing too. Jai called an emergency meeting of the whole project group to bring them up to date with the incident. He and Adi had also come up with additional security precaution, starting with getting them all to make backup of their work on a secure network location. Jai asked Dr Goel who supervised the project to make some sense of various parts of project and see if he could figure out what Dr Mishra had been working on.
The security video tape showed Dr Mishra as the last person to leave the lab at 8.10 PM and the tape is blank until Satish entered at 3 AM . Jai and Adi were about to go to Dr Mishra's house when Iinspector Om Khanna was shown into his office by Satish.
"Mr Walia, this is serious, Inspector Khanna has brought news about Vikram." Satish stood at the side while Jai asked Inspector Khanna to take a seat.
"Mr Walia, body of Vikram was discovered this morning in his car. He had been shot through the head. We think it was some petty drug deal gone bad as there was drug found on his body." Inspector Khanna leaned forward, "Satish told me you had a break in one of your labs last night."
"Yes, it was just vandalism; nothing is missing so we didn't report it. If we discover anything that needs your assistant we will call you." Jai looked composedly at the inspector. There was no need to get the police involved in this. It would create problems for his company, it was hard as it is to get funding for the project and he didn't want to jeopardize his company's future further with Dixit & Dev venture fund as is. He will handle this in his own way. Usually white-collar crimes never get resolved easily.
Once inspector left Jai and Adi left for Dr Mishra's house, telling Satish to keep him informed if anything else comes to light. Molly, Dr Mishra's housekeeper opened the door and when Jai explained who they were she let them come in, telling them she hasn't heard from Dr Mishra. They go through Dr Mishra's study and take his laptop and some files related to the project. Jai informed Molly to call him if Dr Mishra turned up at the house.
XXXX
Jai gave the laptop and files to Dr Goel with a request to send copies of the data and files to be sent to his office.
In Jai's office, Adi sat strumming his fingers on the desk while Jai stood looking out of the window.
"Adi stop making that noise…I am trying to think!" Jai said in an exasperated voice. He was feeling tight knot at back in the base of his neck, the stress of breach in the security of his labs was unnerving. Recalling his conversation with Dr Mishra last night, he realized how critical Dr Mishra was to the project. He had hinted that if this final test of his was a success, than they would be ready to assemble a prototype to demonstrate to the world…Dr Mishra had hinted at how it would revolutionize the industry globally; the poor of the world would never need to live in the dark.
Looking at Adi, Jai spoke, "Adi I want you to go back to Dr Mishra's house and talk with Molly to find out if anyone came to the house see him. Do same for Vikram too? And get the telephone company to give us records of all the phone calls made and received at their house and on their cell phones…also records of the calls here at the labs."
Adi stood up, "I'll do that…but Jai you should seriously think of setting up a meeting with Dixit & Dev before they find out through other source."
Jai spent rest of the day going over security video tape for the whole day and then going through the list of phone numbers received by Dr Mishra., noting most of the calls were internal.
He sat back in his chair and linked his hands at the back of his mulling over what Adi had said about setting up a meeting with the venture fund. His mind wandered back to his last meeting with Bani Dixit, the President of the venture fund at the prestigious club he was member of. He had arranged a lunch meeting to discuss additional funding for the project. Instead the meeting had deteriorated to personal level and he had flung callous words at her. The meeting terminated when she had stood up and calmly picked up the jug with ice water and tipped it over him and walked out leaving him stupefied in his seat. This wasn't the first time they had spat in public, it stretched back ten years, since the first time his company had approached venture fund for funding. She had been their rising star, after all her aunt Barnali owned the company and Bani had joined the company as soon as she graduated with an MBA. Their love/hate relationship was peppered with embarrassing public incidents.
Last time they had dated for three months before both their tempers had got better of them. He had wined and dined her, sent her flowers and meaningful gifts, had even taken her away for a weekend getaway where by mutual consent they had shared the room and more. He knew he would never forget the nights spent with her. They had both been lustful and could hardly keep their hands off each other on the drive to the hotel. Once in their room the passion had ignited. The whole weekend was blurred except for their uninhibited lovemaking. He called her his enigma…a beautiful, intelligent woman who wasn't easy to decipher. She still invaded his sleep at night, the erotic dreams seemed so real to him when he woke up. After their weekend getaway, things had rapidly deteriorated…may be he shouldn't have slept with her he thought as hindsight. Scribbling a note to himself, in bold letter to call her tomorrow, he picked up his jacket and exited his office to return home.
XXXX
Next day Adi reported to Jai what he had found out. Vikram's neighbour had reported he had seen a woman visiting him. The reason he remember her is because she wasn't the type of women that lived in their part of the city. She was very beautiful and dressed in expensive clothes. Asked if he thought that she was a lady of the night, the neighbour adamantly said no, knew what they looked like and if she was one of those high class call girl…how can a guy who struggled to pay rent afford one of them. His phone numbers checked out, some them where from phone booths.
Just then the door flung open and a high pitched voice rang out, "You son of *****. What the **** do you think you are? When were going to tell me about the break into labs? Did you think that I wouldn't ****** find out?" Hair flying and face flushed she came and stood in front of Jai. Adi quietly got up and walked out gesturing to Jai it's your mess, you deal with it.
Jai looked at the angry young woman standing in front of him and pulling her roughly he brought her close to him and whispered loudly, "You know, you look even more beautiful when you are angry Ms Dixit." He smiled at her as she struggled to get out of his hold.
Infuriated at his boldness, she dug her forefinger into his chest and shouted, "You conceited b*******. Let go of me! I just want to know when you were going to tell me about Dr Mishra going missing."
Jai crashed his lips hard on hers to shut her up and then pushed her down in a chair, leaned over her and in husky voice, "Ms Dixit calm yourself. I was going to tell you when I was sure that Dr Mishra is missing and I had a full report I could give you."
He stood towering over her, pushing his hair back in frustration, thinking of a way to get rid of her as he wasn't ready to answer questions that she would probably fire at him. One thing he had learnt Bani Dixit was no pushover.
Having recovered from his physical onslaught, she glared at him. At this moment she hated him with every ounce of her being. Composing her self, voice cold as ice, "So do inform me when you were going to let me know that my investment is in jeopardy?"
Realizing the best way to deal with her was to appease her, "Let me first apologize for not calling you right away. I was going to arrange meeting as soon as I had concrete evidence Dr Mishra has disappeared. How can I tell you anything if I don't have all the facts related to his disappearance?"
He crossed his fingers hoping she would buy into his lame excuse.
"Ok, I'll go away, but only after you tell me what happened. And I will be here at 10 AM sharp for an update everyday until there an outcome to this mess. Just remember it's my investment that's at stake here."
Bani sat up straight, crossed her arms and looked at him unwaveringly. Breathing a sigh of relief, Jai sat down and told her all the details he knew and promised he would call her if any important info came his way.
XXXX
Disturbed by the buzzing of his cellphone, Jai struggled to wake up. Grabbing the phone and without looking at the caller ID, he shouted, "Jai Walia! Who ever you are there better be a good reason to wake me up at this time of night."
"Sorry to wake you up but I have to see you right away." Recognizing Bani's voice he swore quietly before asking, "Do you know what time it is? Can't it wait till the morning?"
Getting annoyed at him Bani shouted, "I know what time it is…its 3 in the morning. Fine if you don't want me to tell you what I know then bye." He heard the click as the phone disconnected.
Setting his phone back, Jai went back to sleep. He wasn't going to lose any sleep over her telling him something that he probably knew.
Sharp at 10 AM next day, Bani strode into his office without even bothering to knock. Telling the caller he will call back, Jai shut the phone and looked at her. Looking professional in black pant suit with green silk shirt underneath, hair neatly held back in a clip, he stared at her as lustful thoughts crept in his mind. Shaking himself, he smirked at her before saying, "So what were you going to tell me last night?"
Holding his gaze, she smiled, "Last night you were not interested in what I knew. How come you have changed your mind?"
"Not last night, it was three in the morning Bani."
"Still I am not telling you anything until you update me first," she spat back.
Not wanting to waste time he told her he had nothing new to tell her. He pushed a file forward and told her she take it with her and read at her leisure. He raked his eyes over her and said, "Tell me what you know."
Looking as if she had some big secret she was about to share with him, she said softly, "had an anonymous call just before I called you. A guy called, asking me if, I was interested in finding out where Dr Mishra could be found, and before you ask me to have the call traced, I already did and it came from a phone booth."
Look at her disbelievingly, he just said, "Really and why should someone call you up and not me? After all Dr Mishra worked for me."
Getting annoyed at his conceitedness, she snapped back, "I believe indirectly Dr Mishra is also my employee, after all it's my money that is paying for his research.
Holding his hands up he said, "Ok…Ok, I am sorry. What else did he say?"
Frowning at him she answered, "No he hung up before I could ask him anything further."
Still confused at why the caller had called her and not him he cribbed, "I still don't understand why he called you and not me. I too have interest in knowing the whereabouts of Dr Mishra."
Laughing at him Bani wagged her finger at him, "Now, now Jai. Don't be a sore loser. Remember who holds the purse string." Turning serious, she said softly, "look I am sorry what happened at the club, lets be professional. I think we forget our differences and work together on this. I made a decision to fund your research because it showed great potential for success. It was you, your commitment and conviction that with proper funding and right people you would achieve your goal."
His eyes glinting mischievously and smiling he came near her, "Now I like the working together bit."
Raising her eyebrows, she looked at him sternly, "I am serious just a professional business relationship, nothing more nothing less." Standing up, she glanced at her watch and said, "I have to go as I have client meeting at noon."
He watched as she glided out of his office, her heels clicking on the gleaming wood floor of his office.
Late in the afternoon Adi walks into Jai's office.
"How was the ten o'clock meeting?" he asked, making himself comfortable on the couch.
"Ok I guess, she's agreed to work with me on this. Still it bothers me that someone would call her regarding Dr Mishra instead of me."
Becoming alert now, Adi asked "what do you mean? What does she know?"
Jai frowned, his eyes narrowing, "someone called her and told her if she was interested to know the where about of Dr Mishra."
"It's not surprising who ever is behind this knows she is a major player in the project."
Adi stood up, "anyway I just came to let you know Pushkar is working on the phone call list, trying to get names of people and try and eliminate calls and narrow down to the list for further investigation. By the way are we going to get the police involved?" Adi asked.
His voice brusque, he looked at Adi with frustration, "Can't! If the word gets out about this, the company stock will take a beating and I can't afford panic selling on the stock market by investors…we would end up losing the company. It's a white-collar crime…"
Nodding his head at Adi, he glanced at his watch and said, "I have a meeting, see you later."

The swanky bar on the top floor of the luxury tower was quiet as it was still early for the night reveller to be out. Jai slid into the plush chair near window and glanced out at the panoramic view of Mumbai skyline. In the corner a lone pianist sitting at the gleaming grand Kawai was playing soft jazzy number. He ordered his usual drink of scotch and glanced around at the spattering of patrons. Nobody caught his attention, just the typical business crowd and none that he knew. Just as well as he didn't need any distraction as he was here to observe the clientele. Pushkar had highlighted several calls made from this bar to Dr Mishra which had aroused his curiosity as this was unlikely place that would be frequented by the reclusive Dr Mishra.
The clicking of heels on the polished granite floor caused him to turn his head. He glared as Bani Dixit walked towards him. The long black wraparound dress emphasised her curvaceous body and was perfect foil for her creamy complexion. She threw Jai a sweet smile and sat down opposite him well aware that he wasn't too pleased with her intrusion.
"Well Jai, don't seem too happy to see me?" Bani arched her brows at his glaring stare.
"You are right! I don't remember inviting you to join me." Jai cold voice and steely eyes amused Bani. When her PI had followed Jai to the bar, he had phoned her to let her know and she had rushed home to change and make her way here determined to keep an eye on him.
Ordering a martini for herself she did a quick sweep of the people in the bar and then looking at Jai asked, "So have you found whoever you are looking for?"
"Did I say I am looking for someone? I just came here to relax minus particular unwanted company." Jai took sip of his drink and smirked at her watching as hint of colour tinged her cheeks.
"Shall I go away? I didn't realize I was an unwanted company." Bani made a move to stand up. Jai clasped her hand stalled her, "Stay."
"I think I have changed my mind. I don't want to sit here and look at your scowling face." Jai jerked her arm pulling her down on his lap and bringing his face close to her, "don't test me Bani," gazing seductively at her, brushing his lips on her cheek, "you won't like the consequences."
Jai pushed her up and gave her a little nudge, "Now go and sit in your seat like a good little girl."
Bani sat down, cursing him silently. She felt stares thrown there way by the other patrons and was in no mood to entertain them further by having verbal fisticuffs with the egoistic man in front of her. The silence that followed stretched into several minutes until Jai feeling little guilty about his brusque manner, shifted uncomfortably and said softly, "I am sorry Bani."
Bani shrugged her shoulders and without looking at him, "You're forgiven. Why are you here Jai, I told you to keep me in loop?"
Sighing deeply he ventured, "there is nothing to tell Bani. We discovered few calls were made to Dr Mishra from this bar. I don't even know who I am looking for."
A smile crept on Bani's face and she drawled, "Aha, you just admitted you are looking for someone."
"Yes, but I also said I have no clue who I am looking for."
"Well, four eyes are better than two, don't you think so?" Bani felt slightly elated as her earlier thoughts were confirmed.
They sat watching people walk in and out of the bar. It was getting busy now, the younger crowd drifting in to socialize after work. Bani winced and turned away as she recognized the guy walking in. Shivers ran down her spine as she recalled her past encounter with him. Aparajit Dev was a successful businessman, well known in the business world. The tall, debonair man, well aware of his appeal to the opposite sex, was according to Bani, a sleazy bas****.
Aparajit or AD as he was known had seen Bani through the glass door before walking into the bar. He made a beeline for her and before she knew he was standing beside her. Running a finger down the side of her face, he said, "Well if it isn't Ms Dixit. Still upset with me I see." Bani brushed his hand aside and looked at him coldly. "Get lost AD. I told you before I don't want to see your face."
AD smirked at her and laughed softly, "Still feisty…do you know how sexy you look when eyes are blazing and body shimmering with anger." Before he could goad her further, a woman came up and linking his arm pouted, "AD, here you are and I was waiting downstairs for you." Looking with veiled attraction at Jai, she said, "and who is your friend AD? Are you going to introduce me?"
Miffed at being interrupted, AD looked at Bani and said, "This is Ms Dixit, a very good friend of mine. Ms Dixit this is Pia," emphasizing the words, he didn't fail to notice Bani flinching. Giving a bland look at Jai, AD continued, "I believe we have the pleasure of meeting Jai Walia, the eminent owner of Walia Group. Mr Walia, pleasure to meet you."
Pia now openly checking Jai out but Jai refused to look her way. She was definitely beautiful, great body with silky brown hair but one look at her eyes revealed the hardness in them making him wary of her. Jai out of courtesy shook AD's hand and gave curt nod to Pia. Wishing to get rid of them, Bani curtly spoke up, "Do you mind excusing us but Mr Walia and I are having a business meeting."
AD raised his hand slightly and walked away but not before giving her sly look.
Bani slumped back in her chair and sighed. Jai leaned forward with concern, "Want to tell me what all that was about? Why is that scumbag taking liberties with you?"
She clenched her hand and controlling her voice said, "I went on dates with him couple of times few years back. Dumped him after second date as he came on too heavy…made it obvious he was only interested in one thing, getting me into his bed."
"Is he your client? Did your company finance his business at anytime?" Jai asked thinking how much info he could squeeze out her. Quiet useful to know how deep his business rival's his fingers are buried in debt pool.
Becoming guarded Bani ventured, "Yes he is our client, but I don't deal with him. His account is handled by Mr Saini."
"And like you don't know how much money is invested in his company. Kind of sloppy don't you think not to keep tabs on all your venture accounts!" Jai knew he was pushing her and there was a chance she would clamp up, but it was too good and opportunity to miss.
Bani impetuously blurted out, "For your information, I know what's happening with each of the accounts. AD came six months back for more financing and I refused. We have already financed quiet a hefty amount in some of his projects." Realizing she said more than she should have, Bani glared at him. "I think that's enough talk on AD. Do you know who Pia is/ She is Pia Shukla, Pushkar's ex-wife?"
Jai looked at her in surprise, "Pushkar who works for me…she used to be his wife. Wow! How did he manage to hook up with her?"
"Crude aren't you. Pushkar's not bad looking and they were married before she became a successful model. She used Pushkar for his money to launch herself into a modeling. Pushkar's better off without her." Bani reveled at the thought she knew more about his employee than him.
"Thanks for the details. Interesting pair don't you think?" Not sure what to make of his comment, Bani just shrugged her shoulders and deciding nothing further to be gained by waiting around, stood up and picking up her purse, "I am leaving, waste of time if you think you can sit here and figure out who your kidnapper is."
Turning a deaf ear to her comment, Jai stood up and asked, "Did you bring your car or can I drop you home?"
Contemplating for a moment whether she should risk taking up his offer or take a taxi, "If you don't mind dropping me home than I accept the ride."
In the car Jai fought off the urge to pull over the side of the road and haul her into his arms and kiss her. Damn the woman for bringing out the primal need in him.
After dropping her off, he made his way home. Thoughts of AD and Pia occupied his mind. The fact Pia used to be Pushkar's wife and Pushkar worked for him…he will have to talk to Adi about Pushkar as Jai didn't know much about him.
Divine Rays PT 2
Adi arrived promptly at 10 AM in Jai Walia's office. He didn't have anything new to report to him. Chasing phone numbers had not turned up much and repeated going over the security tapes didn't reveal anything new either. To top it off Dr Goel had said that whatever latest Dr Mishra had been working on, Dr Mishra had not bothered to write notes on paper or on computer, so they were missing an important block of work.
Being his jovial self he greeted Jai and took a seat on the sofa. "How was the trip to the bar last night? Learn anything new?" Adi asked watching Jai sit back in his chair and turn the paperweight on his desk around.
Instead of answering his question, Jai snapped, "Tell me about Pushkar?"
Taken aback by the question, Adi arched his brow, "Pushkar, what do you want to know?"
"Everything! When did you hire him? His background…his family etc. I want to know everything," Jai said bluntly. He listened attentively as Adi told him everything that he knew about Pushkar, including his family, ex-wife Pia and previous employment. When he finished he looked at Jai, "why this interest in Pushkar?"
"I saw his wife Pia yesterday with AD. Bani told me Pia had been married to Pushkar."
"What was Bani doing at the bar? And how come she knows so much about Pushkar?" Adi questioned.
Sounding amused, he replied, "What do think Bani was doing? Keeping a tab on my movements, probably has this place watched 24/7. Wouldn't be surprised if she has a dossier on all our employees, she's perspicacious, that one. Can't hide anything from her…"
Adi not amused at the answer, "It's not funny Jai. How can she get away with spying on us?"
"Relax Adi, she's only safeguarding her investments. Anyway why don't you send Pushkar to see me, I want to talk to him. In the meantime find out as much info you can AD and his business, including any ties up he has with other companies."
Adi left still not happy to know that some guy out there was watching him sulked off.
Jai studied Pushkar as he sat uncomfortably in front of him. The guy wasn't bad to look at, young, degree in economics, hardworking and from the look, quiet shy. Jai smiled, trying to relax him, "Tell me about Pia."
"What do you want to know sir? We are divorced now." Pushkar answered timidly.
"Do you still see her?"
"Sometimes she will call and ask to meet for coffee or drinks, sir."
"Still on friendly terms with her, why did you divorce?"
"She was ambitious…wanted to be a model, plus I couldn't give her the lifestyle she wanted sir." Pushkar sat answering the question trying to figure out why Jai was so interested in his ex-wife.
Jai's next question stumped Pushkar. "Do you still sleep with her?"
Face turning red, Pushkar stammered, "Sir…what kind of…I mean is this necessary."
Jai thundered, "Yes Pushkar, especially when my company's security is breached and one of my staff goes missing. Do you ever talk about work with her? Did she ever question you regarding what we do here?"
"No sir, I never talk about work with Pia and she is too into herself to be interested in what I do." Pushkar replied, feeling a little relieved Jai hadn't pushed for intimate details about his love life.
"Do you know Aparajit Dev or AD as he is known?"
"Sir, I have heard Pia talk about him, I don't know him personally. But sir is he not a businessman like you. Sometime the business magazine/paper has articles on him."
Jai relaxed a little and looked at Pushkar thoughtfully, "Can you do something for me Pushkar?"
Eager to get away from him, Pushkar almost jumped to his feet, "Yes sir, just tell me what you need doing sir."
"I want you to meet with Pia and try and find out what she knows about AD and his business dealings. Try to be casual so she doesn't suspect anything. I want to know whom AD meets outside of business. Think you can do that?" Jai watched as Pushkar's face looked a little dejected. Pushkar stood up and said quietly, "I will try and find out sir. Can I go now?"
"Thanks Pushkar. You can go and tell Adi I want to see him." Jai released breath as Pushkar left. He felt manic to do that to Pushkar but since finding out Pia was Pushkar's ex-wife and she was friendly with AD had his mind in overdrive. She could have manipulated Pushkar into revealing info about the labs security and people working on the project. Pia may look frivolous but beneath he felt she could be conniving and deceiving.

AD stepped out of Mr Saini's office at Dixit & Dev. He had been surprised when Mr Saini had requested a meeting to go over the company's quarterly financial for the current year. But he had obliged and now making his way he peeked into Bani Dixit's office to see her working away on her PC. Without knocking he stepped into the office.
"Just leave the files on the desk," Bani said without looking up. AD walked quietly up to her and waited for her to look up.
Feeling an uneasy prickly feeling down her back, Bani glanced up to see AD smirking at her. Controlling rapid rise in anger at having her privacy invaded, Bani sat back and looked him in the eyes and said, "You are being a jerk AD."
"Thanks for the compliment Bani, didn't know you loved me so much." AD brought his face close to her and whispered, "You look like so enticing Bani when you are mad. Give us a chance Bani…we will be explosive in bed I guarantee you."
Seething with anger, Bani jerked her knee up, but missed catching AD as he moved back quickly. Putting his head back, AD laughed out aloud. Before she realized what was happening, AD had pulled her up and locked her arms behind her, pulling her flush to his body. He locked eyes with her and in a gruff voice, "Bani I could take you any time and you wouldn't be able to do anything, but you know I don't want to be rough with you. I want you to come to me willingly…I want you to want me as much as I want you."
Repulsed at his suggestion, she hissed in his face, "Keep this up and you'll end up in a lock-up, let go off me and get out before I get you arrested for harassment."
Letting go of her arms he held his hands up and smirked as he walked backwards. Stopping at the door, his face suddenly turned menacing, "Bani I don't forget easily. And what I want…I always get."
He was gone before she could recover from the chills she felt at his threat. Her legs felt like jelly and her stomach turned queasy. Sitting down she put her head back and closed her eyes, breathing slowly trying to dispel the fear she felt.

Few days later……..
Adi rushed into Jai's office, "Jai police just called, Pushkar was found beaten up in an alley. He is in serious condition at the hospital. They said he was lucky as couple of guys came by while he was being beaten. I am going to hospital, are you coming?"
With an abrupt, "Yes!" Jai closed his laptop and walked out with Adi.
At the hospital the police officer would not let them go into the room. They glanced through the window to see Pushkar bandaged up and hooked up to monitors. As a nurse walked by, Jai asked her where they could find the doctor who was looking after Pushkar. She gave Jai directions to the doctor's office and they walked off to see if they what could find out about Pushkar's condition.
Knocking on the door, Jai and Adi entered the office. Dr Shrivastav looked at them inquiringly. Jai spoke, "hello doctor, I am Jai Walia. I believe Puskhar Shukla is your patient. We would like to know how his condition is?"
Pointing to the chairs, Dr Shrivastav asked them to take seat and explained Pushkar had slipped into coma due head injury as well as broken ribs and arm. He was hopeful that he will come out of the coma quickly as it was due to trauma suffered due to the beating. At the moment nothing else could be done, they just had to wait for him to regain consciousness. Jai thanked the doctor and gave him his business card and asked him to let him know of any change in Pushkar's condition.
Making their way back to the ICU room, Jai asked the police officer outside the room if they could talk to the officer in charge. He gave them the name of the officer that was handling the case. The trip to the police station didn't reveal much info. There was no description of the suspects as they had run off when the passerby had shouted at them. He gave Jai the names and addresses of the two guys who had found Pushkar.
Adi sent Jai back to the office while he went to talk to the guys. Adi again drew blank, as the guys couldn't tell him anything different to what they had already told the police. They would have to wait till Pushkar pulled out of coma. He felt sorry Jai had involved Pushkar into this mess. Somehow Pushkar must have said or done something that aroused suspicion and got attacked in the process.
Jai stepped out of his car and looked towards the building housing the Dixit & Dev headquarters. Swati, Bani's secretary recognized him as soon as he walked into foyer. Jai threw her a dazzling smile and asked if her boss was in the office. She giggled and told him Bani was in her office and she didn't have any engagements for the next hour. Swati stared at Jai's behind as he sleekly walked away towards the stairs. Rest of the day Swati was caught daydreaming…the man in her dreams being non other than Jai Walia.
Opening the office door Jai peered in to see Bani lying on the sofa with her eyes closed. In two minds whether to disturb her or walk away, he was startled when he heard her say, "Come in Jai, I just have a migraine."
Kneeling beside her, he lifted her hand away from her eyes, "relax, I'll just massage the side of your head" he said. As his fingers moved around in gentle circle, Bani felt herself relaxing as the tension at the base of neck lessened. Jai watched as her face relaxed, the brows lines diminished and her lips fell into its natural shape. He stared hard at her, being so close to her, breathing in her intoxicating scent, he forgot his resolve of being professional with her and lowered his head and brought his lips onto hers. As he kissed her gently, her arms slipped around his neck and she kissed him back. As he pulled away Bani opened her eyes slowly and stared into his deep dark pools and her lips parted softly, "Jai…" A lonely tear slipped down her cheek.
He brushed the tear away, "Want to tell me what's wrong? You look sad…" Bani looked away and whispered, "AD came here few days ago and…" she hesitated. "And what Bani?" Jai asked concerned now, he had hated the way AD had looked at Bani in the bar. He held her hand in his "Bani tell me what happened?"
Struggling to get the words out she paused and breathed shallowly before saying, "He came onto me again and when I got angry…He threatened. He said he always gets what he wants. Jai I hate him…if he wasn't my client, I know I wouldn't have let him get away with what he did."
"Bani…" finding it hard to utter the right words, he stared at her, he had never seen her looking distressed before. He just gathered her close to him, "I swear Bani if he comes close to you again when I am around, I kill him." After ten minutes of sitting quietly, Jai debated whether he should tell her about Pushkar or not, concluding it wasn't a good time to tell her anything disturbing. Jai gently moved his arms from around her and stood up, "I have to go as I need to be back at the office, I'll call you later."

Two days later…Pushkar still hadn't regained consciousness and Jai left the hospital and tried calling Bani's cell, but it wasn't turned on. Taking a chance may be she had gone home he drove towards her apartment.
Bani sat flicking TV channels trying to find something to watch. She had returned home early and had a soak in bath and then made herself something to eat. The buzzing of her doorbell invaded her mind and she glanced at the clock and wondered who could be at the door at this time of the night. Hastily pulling on her sweat top, which she had discarded after feeling hot, she opened the door to see Jai standing there.
"What took you so long, I was just about to go?" Jai walked in past her and sat down on the sofa, picking up the remote for the TV and started surfing the channels.
"Hey, I was watching something," Bani grabbed the remote from him and glared at him.
"What are you doing here? I don't remember inviting you," Bani said angrily.
Glazing at her unperturbed, he smiled lazily "well if your cell phone had been turned on, I wouldn't be here. I would have talked to you on the phone instead of driving all the way here." Arching his brows, "I just wanted to know if you were ok."
"Well I am fine so you can leave now," Bani spat at him, irked, as she didn't feel like company wanted or unwanted.
"I am not leaving so you can stop being all wound up and sit down. If I remember rightly the other afternoon, you didn't mind my company." Jai sat calmly waiting for her response.
Colouring slightly as she recalled her mini meltdown in the afternoon but still not wanting to give in, she scowled at him, "I wasn't feeling well and you offered to massage my head. As you can see I am fine now so you can leave and I can watch TV in peace and quiet."
Grabbing her arm and pulling her down on him, Jai cupped her chin gently and whispered, "Why do you insist on being so stubborn Bani?"
Bani remained motionless and stared at his eyes, her heartbeat raced from being so close to him and she drew his face close to her and kissed the corner of his mouth, as her fingers curled around his hair. He made a growling sound before moving his mouth hungrily over her parted her lips.
Later still entwined on the sofa, Bani lifted her head up, "why did you come to my office that day?"
Jai looked at her and frowned, "I wanted to tell you about Pushkar. He is in hospital…he is in coma. Someone tried to beat him to pulp. I didn't tell you earlier as I didn't want to upset you further."
"Do you know who did this?" Bani now fully sitting up, pulled her hair in a rough knot and smoothed dowb her camisole.
Jai pulling her down, "Leave your hair down. No the police don't have descriptions of the attackers." He related to her how he had questioned Pushkar about Pia and then asked him to find out through Pia, who AD was seeing etc.
"And you think this attack is related to that."
Jai sighed, "Yes I think so. I shouldn't have got him involved. May be I misjudged Pushkar…may be he is still be emotionally attached to Pia and does not see that she is a manipulative b****."
"She was ogling at you the other night. May be you should reciprocate…use your charms on her." Bani smirked as she spoke. She regretted her words as he hauled her flush to him and hissed in her face, "So you don't mind me jumping in bed with her! Sorry, no can do…I am only interested in doing that with one particular woman and that happens to be you at the moment." Stunned by his anger, Bani felt her head spinning…everything was spinning except his face. She watched as his anger evaporated and guilt taking over. With shaking hands she pushed him away, "I am sorry Jai…" and as tears threatened to roll down her face, she ran off into her bedroom.
His breath stalled in his throat as he cursed himself on being so rough, his hand curled into a fist and he slammed it hard on the back of the sofa. He exhaled deeply and forced himself towards her bedroom, he didn't want to leave her without apologizing for being such an inconsiderate as*****.

Bani froze as her eyes opened to feel herself held tight against a warm body. Turning her head she glanced at Jai's sleeping face and their verbal tiff last night came crawling back.
He had come into the bedroom and slipped in next to her and just held her, whispering sorry over and over again. She turned her head back and looked at his hands, fingers entwined in a grip. She hated when they threw barbs at each other, hurting each other without meaning to. It was hard to decipher their relationship…at the moment she didn't know what she felt for him. Sighing she carefully extracted his fingers open, she slid out of the bed. His shirt was half open and wrinkled from sleeping in it. Collecting a change of clothes from the closet, she walked into the bathroom.
After showering and dressing she went to the kitchen and made coffee. Pouring out two cups, she puts them on a tray and carried it back to the bedroom. The bed was empty when she stepped. She walked towards the small table and set the tray down and sensed him walking towards her, he wrapped his around her and pressed his face into her shoulders. His muffled voice reverberated against her skin, "Bani…am I forgiven?"
Turning around, she looked at him gravely for a few moments and whispered, "Yes…but…" Twisting to release herself out of his arms she murmured softly, "Next time, I won't be so forgiving, Jai." Handing him his cup of coffee, "Now drink your coffee while I go and make breakfast."
Later as Bani left for office, Jai made his way home to change clothes before going to his work.
Adi was sitting in his chair staring out the window when Jai walked into his office.
Standing up Adi smirked, "Where were you last night?"
"None of your business." Jai snapped.
"Well, we are in a good mood this morning. What happened? Things didn't go your way…she refused to play your games?" Adi taunted. Adi knew Bani was the last person Jai had dated and whatever misunderstanding there was between the two, Jai had never dated anyone again or spent a night away from home without him knowing.
"I was with Bani last night and before your mind starts going into overdrive…we did not sleep together. Now if you don't have anything important to tell me, then leave." Jai powered up his laptop and looked at the pile of files on his desk.
Adi just smiled and walked to the door, "I just came to tell you and I am going to the hospital to check up on Pushkar. If you need me you can call me on the cell." Adi closed the door quietly behind him. Jai paged his PA to bring him some coffee. He needed caffeine to clear his head, which at present was full of thoughts about Bani…thoughts he didn't want to decipher. He was tired of misinterpreting her words…her actions. He sighed and acknowledged he loved her…he needed her. It was this need to be with her that caused him to be emotionally unstable around her. The barrier that he had carefully built around him in the last few months crumbled when she told him AD had threatened her…no man was going to lay a finger on her while he was around.
Jai spent good part of the day going through information collected on AD and his various companies spread around the country. AD had made heavy investments in his holdings ranging from pharmaceuticals, technology to engineering. His attempt to get funding to build research facility had failed with no one willing to finance him. The various financial companies were not willing to fork out money as already his company had heavy debt load. AD certainly had grudge against Bani…she spurned his advances and she also refused his request for additional funding.
Picking up his cell he dialed Bani's number only to have the call directed to voicemail. Leaving a brief message, he put his phone down. Wondering why Adi hadn't called him yet, he decided to go to Adi's office. Adi wasn't in his office and his assistant said he hadn't been back to the office since leaving this morning. Thinking there was no point waiting…Adi will get in touch if needed, Jai decided he might as well go home. He didn't feel like going through the rest of his files, there was nothing urgent that needed his attention.
Lounging on his bed, Jai flicked through the TV channels settling on watching the news.
His cell phone vibrated on the side table, picking up Jai smiled when Bani's name popped up on the screen. Flipping it open he said, "Hi Bani."
"Hi Jai, sorry I couldn't return your call but I had meetings."
Looking at the clock on his bedside table, "It's ok, I was just going to ask you out to dinner, but it's late, maybe some other time."
"Well good night." Before he could reply he heard the click at the other end. Feeling disappointed at not being able to hear her voice again, he turned the TV and lights and settled down to sleep. Much to his discomfort, sleep seemed to evade him and he spent tossing and turning until finally his eyes closed and he fell into restless sleep.

The persistent buzzing of his cell phone finally invaded his mind and he groped for it on the side table. Picking it up he groggily answered, "Jai."
"Listen carefully, if you want Dr Mishra back alive, than be prepared to pay five crore. I will give you time to think and call you back." The unrecognizable voice cut off abruptly as the phone-clicked shut. Alert now, Jai sat up and turned on the lamp and checked call received and noted the phone number on piece of paper…he will get Adi to check it out. He sat playing the words over and over again. It was hefty sum the kidnapper wanted…Dr Mishra was a brilliant man and definitely a key man in the project, but they were no where near to announce to the world about their success. Maybe there was more to the kidnapping than he thought. Turning the light off again, Jai went back to sleep.
Jai was surprised to see Adi at breakfast next morning. Looking his usual chirpy self, he greeted Jai and helped himself to tea.
"How is Pushkar? Jai asked, watching him over the top of paper he was reading.
"The same, not much change. But guess what, Pia was at the hospital. Don't know how she found out, but was upset at seeing Pushkar beaten up so badly. I spent quite bit of time talking to her. It seems AD told her about Pushkar being in hospital." Adi watched as Jai folded the newspaper and laid it side.
"And how did AD know?"
Adi laughed, "I don't know, but I guess his got spies too."
Getting irritated, Jai glared at him, "Really Adi, I don't think its funny." Suddenly remembering he hadn't told Adi about the call during the night, "I had a ransom demand last night…they want five crore for safe return of Dr Mishra."
Choking on his tea, Adi gasped, "Five crore…that's insane."
Running his hand through his hair, Jai sighed, "We don't have a choice, I want Dr Mishra back safe. I cannot let them hurt him…I don't want to be responsible for his death."
"But how are we going to get that kind of money on a short notice." Suddenly Adi felt depressed, he didn't like the way the events were taking turn. He had to persuade Jai to get the police involved…couldn't let the ba****** get away with it.
"I think you should negotiate, you cannot give in to their demand, buy some time Jai and I think at least we should talk to Inspector Khanna." Adi had to get Jai to at least talk to Inspecctor Khanna. There was no need to do things in haste. What guarantee was there that Dr Mishra would be released unharmed?
"Ok you ask Inspector Khanna to come and meet us. Tell him to be discreet…I don't know one getting a sniff of this. In the meantime I have to go and see Bani. I have to talk with her to see how we can raise funds if required."
Before leaving for the office, Jai called Bani's cell phone to see if she was free to see him. After several ring, the call connected.
"Bani where are you? I need to see you."
"I am on my way to the office. I have a client meeting in half an hour. We can meet at lunch if you like."
"Fine, see you at twelve." Jai put the car in gear and drove off to his office. At the office Adi had left the message telling him Inspector Khanna would arrive at 10 AM. Jai called Adi back to let him know he was in his office and he was meeting Bani at twelve.
Inspector Khanna wasn't too pleased to find out about kidnapping of Dr Mishra. He criticized both Jai and Adi, telling them at least they should have told him once they realized Dr Mishra had disappeared. When he heard how large the ransom was, he whistled…in all the cases he had handled…most demands ran in lakhs, never crore. He wondered why the doctor was worth so much to the kidnapper and why was Jai willing to pay the money to get the doctor back.
He wasn't too keen on paying ransom, saying this only encouraged others kidnappers. This amount of ransom payment would trigger off an avalanche of kidnappings. Since they still didn't want the complete police involvement he suggested at least having their phones at the office, home and cell phones monitored. He gave guarantee that he would just work with a handful of trusted.
He would request access to files on Vikram, as it seems his death could be linked with the kidnapping of Dr Mishra. Advising Jai to let him know if the kidnapper contacted him again and try to buy additional time to give him time to work on the case.
Precisely at twelve Jai walked into Bani's office. It was empty, he decided to wait for her and made himself comfortable on the chair. The sunlight filtered through semi-closed blinds. Even though the AC was on, the office felt warm. The clicking of heels on the floor alerted him to her arrival. Opening the door Bani put some files on the desk before coming around to where he was sitting. Bending down she brushed her lips on his, "Been waiting long?" Surprised at the gesture he pulled her down on his lap and whispered, "too long…" Trying to stop his hands from roaming over her, she lightly slapped his arm, "Stop it Jai. You said you wanted to talk." Undoing the clip holding her hair, he said, "We are talking aren't we? Your hair smells heavenly…like jasmine…"
Pushing her hair back, Bani scowled at him, "Can we not talk about my hair? What do you want Jai?" Too late she bit her lips as she realized his come back to the question.
"Really Bani…do I have to spell it out what I want?" Jai tried to tug her shirt out of the waistband. Jerking herself away from him, she moved a safe distance from him. Throwing him an icy glare, "You called this morning and requested a meeting Jai. I assumed it was important. I have an appointment in an hour."
Feeling peeved, Jai folded his arms and looked straight at her, "I need five crore."
Bani's eyebrows shot up, she gasped, "five crores! Why do you need that kind of money? Buying another company are we?"
"No!, That's the price to get Dr Mishra back."
"And you are willing to pay five crores to get him back."
"Yes, he got kidnapped, because he worked for me…working on research that is worth more than five crores if we are successful. Whoever has him, knows this. I am sure whoever they are would have no hesitation in auctioning him and his research globally. They can get more for him on global market than what they are asking me for him. I am sure a few terrorist organization wouldn't mind getting their hands on the research."
Going around her desk, Bani sat down and looked at him apprehensively, "What guarantee is there that you will get him back alive?"
Jai looked grimly, "None!"
Bani pushed her hair back absently, "I have to think about this," she paused, "I have to talk with Mr Saini…you realize we will need collateral…are you willing to put at risk for him."
"Yes, I am willing to put up company shares…" Jai said impatiently. "Look we need to talk further. You talk to Saini and we can discuss further over dinner."
"I'll call you. I have to talk with Mr Saini first and it's not going to be easy." Bani stood up and picked up her purse. "I have to go." They both left her office together.
The meeting with Mr Saini did not go well, Bani told him truth. He was upset Bani hadn't told him sooner and why did she want the company to be involved in the mess. Why jeopardize Dixit & Dev due to someone else's problem Bani emphasized they were already involved…they are the one who had financed the project…it is there money that is at risk.
The offer of Walia shares as collateral was a no go with Mr Saini. What happens if the company shares tank? If the press got a whiff of the kidnapping, the investors would start panic selling on the markets. Better to have some physical asset that can be cashed. Mr Saini told her he would audit the Walia Group's financials and he would agree to the loan if sufficient funds could be covered through other company assets.
Bani called Jai up and agreed to meet him for dinner at his choice of restaurant. Jai arrived early at the restaurant and sat at the bar waiting for her. Bani was half an hour late due to meeting with Mr Saini. Jai noticed she looked frazzled as she slumped down on the seat. "Tired?" Jai asked softly, his eyes rested on her deep dark ones. "What can I get you to drink?" he asked lifting her hand in his and rubbing his thumb gently at the side.
"Perrier would be fine," Bani looked at him apprehensively as she mulled over Mr Saini's words. No point putting off what she had to tell him.
"Jai, Mr Saini will only agree to the amount if the collateral is some other asset. He is going to go through company's financial records before arriving at a decision." She let her body relax slightly now that she had told him what he needed to know.
"Thanks Bani. I just need to know if I need the money, it would be available." Jai smiled at her, "Can we enjoy the dinner now? I don't want to talk about the problems for now."
"Fine by me. Actually, I didn't get to have lunch so am famished." Bani kicked off her heels under the table and streched her aching feet. When the food arrived he watched amusedly as she concentrated on eating her food until her plate was empty.
Suddenly becoming aware of his eyes on her she glanced up sheepishly and said, "I told you I was hungry." Jai laughed, "It's just that I have never seen anyone, especially a woman polish off so much food so quickly." As an afterthought he said, "we can order some more if you are still hungry." Pushing her plate away Bani picked up the desert menu, her eyes gleaming at the choice and said smugly, "I'll have chocolate brownie sundae with whipped cream." Jai eyed the tempting desert as waiter set it on the table.
"Are you going to eat all of it by yourself?" he asked her. Bani grudgingly shared her dessert with Jai, letting him grab few spoonfuls of the chocolaty creation. Licking the last bit she purred happily, "Thanks, that was heavenly…"
Settling the bill, they exited the restaurant and Jai walked Bani over to her car. Tempted as he was to follow her to her apartment, he steeled himself and wished her goodnight and watched her drive away.

Jai had been home only half an hour when his cell-phone buzzed. Turning it on, he answered, "Jai…" The caller interrupted him, the voice coldly snapped, "I know who you are. Told you not to get police involved? Why is inspector Khanna snooping around?"
Jai paled as he listened and frantically gestured to Adi, who was with him, to listen in. Putting on the headset hooked to the recording machine capable of recording the wireless call.
Trying to sound confident Jai replied, "I think you are misunderstanding, Inspector Khanna is investigating the murder of Vikram, lab assistant who used to work for me."
The voice sarcastic now, "do you take me for a fool? Inspector Khanna is jeopardizing this deal, get him off our back, otherwise the consequences won't be desirable." The threat rang with maliciousness and sent chills down both Jai and Adi.
Shaken Jai remained silent for few moments, the voice spoke, "Get Inspector Khanna to back off. Are ready to pay the money?"
"Five crore is too much to raise in such a short notice. My company does not have that kind of money in cash." Jai rushed, trying to gather his thoughts together, remembering Inspector Khanna had asked him to buy some time.
"Oh I think you can get the money. We know you had meetings with Ms Dixit today, I am sure she is willing to advance the money. The dinner date was quite entertaining to watch…such a pretty woman…" the voice trailed off lewdly. A sickening feeling twisted inside Jai…someone was watching them and knew everything. Some sick bas**** was out there watching them. Suddenly his heart thumped as he realized Bani could be in danger. Perspiration gathered on his forehead as Jai rubbed the back of his neck, trying to respond…to say something that would not rile the caller. Adi looked at him puzzled. Why was Jai stalling…why wasn't he saying something.
"Tell me when and where to drop the money off," Jai spoke tonelessly, wanting to get this over and done with. He didn't want any one hurt…neither Dr Mishra nor Bani.
The voice at the other end snapped, "Get the money ready, I will call back." The phone clicked and went dead.
"Jai…"Adi never got to finish what he wanted to say as Jai looked at him tensely, "Not now Adi. Just go…we'll talk tomorrow."
Next morning, Inspector Khanna listened to the call recorded on the machine. As he listened to the threats from the kidnapper, he tried to figure out how they had managed to find out he was snooping around. He had taken great care not to arouse any suspicion. He concurred with Jai about the possibility of Bani being in danger and offered to her plain- watched around the clock. Jai and Inspector Khanna argued for several minutes regarding ransom payment…Inspector Khanna being adamant paying ransom only made it harder for his men to apprehend the perpetrators.
Jai was not willing to compromise…there was no way he was not going to jeopardize Bani's safety. In fact he was going to persuade Bani to move into his home where he could keep an eye on her.
He told inspector they would have to tell her…it wasn't going to easy…Bani hated being told what to do.
Jai groaned inwardly when Inspector Khanna announced he too from now on stay the night at the mansion, as he wanted to present when the kidnapper called again.
Jai decided he had spent enough time with Inspector and told him he was going to go and see Bani. She was in her office aimlessly flitting through files. There was nothing that required her attention and for once her diary was free of meetings. In fact she was enjoying the free, ding nothing until Jai walked in. A scowl formed on her face as Jai walked in unannounced. She wondered why he was here, she didn't have anything new to tell him,..Mr Saini had told her he would finalize the details later in the day.
"I don't have anything new to tell you Jai. Mr Saini hasn't made any sort of decision yet," Bani said tartly. Coming straight to the issue, Jai told her bluntly, "Bani the kidnapper made a threat against you last night. Inspector Khanna believe its real and we feel for your safety it is better if you stayed over at my place. He is providing security around the clock for you as of this morning."
"And you didn't think of including me in your meeting before you made decision about restricting my freedom," Bani snapped, looking annoyed. She stared at him coldly, "I am not going anywhere except to my apartment and I don't need bodyguards. I can take care of myself."
Jai leaned over her desk and smiled menacingly at her, "You don't have any choice Bani…if you don't agree than I will physically carry you out myself and take you home."
"I told you, I can take care of myself!" She looked at him angrily, "now leave before I have you thrown out."
"Fine! I will leave, but I will be expecting you at my house by 7PM, if not…" He trailed off and stormed out of the office. Bani's anger simmered for the rest of the day, no one dared enter her office after couple of the employee got their heads bitten off at slightest of error.
Mr Saini finally came to see her at five, complete with contract stating terms for financing. Bani got highly irritated as he painstakingly went through each single detail with her. Breathing a sigh of relief when he finally left, she sat contemplating whether to call Jai or not. Highly tempted to keep him on tenterhooks…let him suffer, the arrogant fool that he was…who did he think he was coming in here ordering her what to do.
The gnawing guilt tool over and half an hour later, Bani picked up her phone and dialled Jai. The tension lifted slightly, she had behaved harshly towards him. He cared enough to be worried about her…the thought sent warm feelings flooding through her.
The call connected and she heard his voice, "Hi Bani."
"Hi Jai…" She paused for a moment, "sorry for shouting at you this morning,"
"I think both of us overdid it, I shouldn't have so pig-headed. Any way why did you call?"
"Mr Saini drafted papers for the loan, can we meet?"
"I am home, come over and we will discuss it over dinner."
She held her breath and said rather sharply, "On one condition you will not try coerce me into staying over."
"Fine…fine, I will see you shortly." The phone disconnected at the other end. Bani picked up the file and purse and made her way to her car.
Divine Rays - Part 3
Taking out the light in my life……
The traffic was heavy and it took time to reach Jai's house. Too occupied with her thoughts she failed to see car following her at a discreet distance. Parking the car on the ample driveway leading to the Walia mansion, Bani walked up to the orante glass and wood paneled doors. She way shown into the family room by the butler, who returned couple of minutes later to inform Jai would be there shortly. Bani glanced around; she had never been inside the house before and admired the rich dcor with elegant furnishings and antique furniture. The sofas were upholstered in rich red and gold patterned fabric. She studied few family pictures scattered around, mostly pictures of Jai and his parents.
Sound of soft tread on the polished floor averted her attention towards Jai. She smiled at him as he came and sat down beside her. Leaning over he lightly kissed her cheek, "would like something to drink?" he asked. "Juice please." Bani picked up the file lying next to her.
Calling his butler, he ordered juice for them and leaned back and looking at the file asked, "is that for me?"
Nodding her head she handed him the file. Bani watched as he quietly studied the contract. After a while he glanced up and asked her, "I presume you went through this, what do you think?"
Bani shrugged her shoulders lightly, "you know we have to protect our investment Jai? It seems harsh but if we lend you five crore, we have to recover it somehow if you cannot repay it back. Physical assets are the guarantee we can recover the funding. The plant in Bangalore is at premium in the current real estate market, it would amply cover the funds." She felt as if she sounded harsh, but she could not let personal feelings come in way of jeopardizing the business. Dixit & Dev had steadily managed to become one of the best venture company because of their professional management of each and every venture they financed.
"I have no objections since I need the money. I will get contracts done up through my corporate lawyer tomorrow." Jai closed the file and put it down and asked, "Dinner?"
Nodding her Bani stood up and followed him to the dining area.
Just as they finished dinner, Inspector Khanna arrived and seeing Bani there, he commented, "Glad to know you changed your mind and decided to stay here. Makes my job easier knowing you are safe here."
Bani sighed deeply and shook her head, "Inspector Khanna, I am not staying here. I just came to discuss business with Jai. I will be going back to my apartment shortly." Inspector Khanna shook his head exasperatedly and said, "Ms Dixit, why are you being stubborn, may be you should listen to the call…its not an empty threat, I believe the guy is capable of hurting you." Pausing, "Somehow there is a connection somewhere, why would the kidnapper be interested in you? Indirectly you are his meal ticket." Walking over to the recording machine, he motioned to Bani to follow him.
Jai just sat down, letting Inspector Khanna deal with her. He had promised Bani he wouldn't force her to stay and he was sticking by it. Bani watched Jai as the message played, and couldn't read eyes. Jai's face was expressionless. She knew he would keep his word and not say anything to her to change her mind. As message terminated, Bani walked over to Jai and asked, "What do you think?" Jai arched his brows wondering why she was asking his opinion when she knew what he wanted, "Bani it would make me happy if you stayed here but ultimately its your decision."
Jai and Inspector Khanna watched as Bani left without saying anything. Inspector Khanna called his officer outside to follow her and let him know once she is safely inside.
It was late in the night when Inspector Khanna knocked on the study to let Jai know Bani had returned. Changed into faded jeans and t-shirt, she stood clutching a small bag. She stood, cheeks flushed from embarassment and gave a wane smile as he came up to her. He didn't say anything but asked her to follow him and took her to the guestroom, wished her goodnight and left.
Bani spent restless night in the guestroom. She missed familiar surrounding of her own bedroom. Her bedroom was half the size of the guestroom and definitely more cozy. Next morning she was up early and by the time Jai came downstairs had already left.

Jai had the contract drawn up and sent a copy over to Bani for their approval. By the end of the day the contracts had been signed and money transfer made. It was just a case of waiting now for the call.
Pushkar had come out of coma but was hardly in the condition to be questioned. He drifted in and out sleep and attempts by Inspector Khanna to question had yielded nothing useful as Pushkar had difficulty recollecting the attack. All he remembered was being on the grounds and being kicked and punched by group of guys. He didn't even know why he had gone to that area in the first place. Pia came to see him everyday, whether it was guilt or some other reason but she seemed serious and not her usual flirty self.
It was a case of waiting game, waiting for a call from the kidnapper or wait and see if investigation yielded a firm clue.
Two days later Jai got a call at the office from the kidnapper telling him where and how the money was to be dropped. The call was traced to a phone booth. Every call was made from different locations making it harder to trace the caller
Inspector Khanna wanted to make the drop but Jai reminded Inspector the kidnapper had said only Jai bring the money. It would be foolish to let someone else go since the kidnapper would recognize the person wasn't Jai. They had several hours to arrange for money to be picked up from the bank. Amid tight security Jai and Inspector Khanna picked up the money and went back home. Jai agreed to be wired up just in case something went wrong and Inspector Khanna would follow him at a safe distance. As the deadline approached, Bani watched them quietly as they readied to leave. Jai locked eyes with her briefly, giving her a reassuring smile before he walked out without saying a word. Bani walked up to the window and watched the car drive off and then turned back and went upstairs to her room. Time seemed to freeze as she sat on a chair facing the window looking out.
Driving along the given route, the road wound out of the city and unto the dark and unlit dirt lane. Trees overcrowded the narrow lane and Jai had to put the headlights on full to see ahead. Driving slowly Jai followed the directions and came out onto open land and derelict buildings loomed haphazardly in front of him. A faint light could be seen in one of the building. Parking his car as close to the light source and in view of the opening, Jai dismounted and picking up bag made his way slowly towards the empty doorway. With his heart thudding Jai stopped and glanced around but did not see any other vehicles or moving bodies about. Silently praying he took a step inside and walked into the middle of room. The room was littered with broken glass, broken wooden tables and chair, and floor covered with thick layer of dirt. He looked at the side towards the entrance where a door hung loosely on a broken hinge. Straining his eyes into the dark, trying to see anything. As he stepped towards the doorway, a voice called out, "Stop right there!"
Jai froze where he was and waited, breathing rapidly. "Put the bag down and step back." The voice sounded hollow and seemed to coming from some sort of device. Mustering up some courage, Jai spoke, "Can I see Dr Mishra?"
"Don't worry, you will see Dr Mishra soon. I want you to turn around and walk to the wall in front of you and raise your arms up and rest them on the wall. One of my men is going to coming and check the bag. Whatever you do not turn around if you want to walk out alive."
Jai did as he was told. As soon as he rested his hands on the wall, he heard shuffling behind him. Temptation to turn his head was great, but he refrained from doing so. Several seconds later, the voice told him to turn around. Slowly Jai turned and looked to see his bag with money gone and on the floor Dr Mishra lay bound and gagged, looking lifeless. Running to where he lay, Jai's hand shook as he tried to pry open the knot to loosen the rag over the mouth, freeing the knot Jai pulled the rag down and shook Dr Mishra lightly to get some sort of response. Getting no response he put his finger and checked his pulse. Breathing a sigh of relief, Jai took out his cell phone and dialled Inspector Khanna. The dial tone was interrupted by siren blaring outside as couple of police cars pulled up outside. Inspector Khanna rushed inside as Jai put his cell phone away. Before he knew, Inspector Khanna pushed him aside as he and the other officers took over. They put Dr Mishra in back of one of the jeep and it sped away. Jai and Inspector Khanna followed the jeep to the hospital.
In the emergency, Dr Mishra was taken to an exam room. Half an hour later the doctor came out and said Dr Mishra was just malnourished and dehydrated. With rest and care should recover within few days. Inspector Khanna left soon after telling Jai he was going back to the site to see if his men found anything. It was close to dawn when Jai finally managed to leave hospital.
No sooner had he stepped inside the house, Bani came running down and looked at him with a sense of relief. Taking in his tired eyes and tousled hair she smiled faintly and asked, "Did you…get Dr Mishra back?"
He gave her a hard look and nodded his head, "Yes! Shouldn't you be in bed?"
She gazed at him and said softly, "I tried sleeping but kept waking up. May be I'll sleep better now knowing you are safe.
Guilt washed over him and he took stride and pulled her close to him. Resting his head on top of hers he whispered one word, "I am sorry you couldn't sleep because of me."
It was close to noon when Jai came down showered and dressed. Bani had been up for a while and had just pottered about waiting for him to get up. Going to kitchen to get fresh coffee for both them, she returned with the tray and set in on table. Pouring coffee out she placed a cup in front of him and asked, "Are you hungry? I can get the cook to cook up something light for you."
"Coffee's fine. Sit down and have yours." Jai filled her in with all that happened during the night. Jai left her to go to his study and call up Adi who had gone to Pune for business.
Jai was still in his study when Inspector Khanna walked in later in the afternoon. Bani was actually making food for them to eat. She came out and greeted the Inspector and went to the study to inform Jai. Coming back with a cup of coffee for the Inspector, Bani sat down and asked him how Dr Mishra was doing.
"Dr Mishra is doing fine. I saw him this morning and asked him questions, trying to find out if he can identify who held him captive. He couldn't tell us much seeing the men's faces were covered all the time. All he remembers is being hit on the head in the car park and then found him self locked up in a dark room. He was left there all the time and not given much or water."
Inspector Khanna greeted Jai as he approached them. "By the way Jai, my men searched that rundown building, top to bottom and found couple of men shot in the head. They are just small time thugs we have on records. The kidnapper must have arranged to collect the money and took the men killed so it would be harder to track him. They would have known who he was."
"Did you find out anything from Dr Mishra?" Jai asked. "As I told Bani, nothing. But I am going to look further into the activities of the guys killed, there must be someone out there who knows what the men were up to. Who knows we may get lucky and come up with a name? It was a mistake to kill the guys and leave them there for us to find." Standing up Inspector Khanna looked at Bani, "I guess it is safe for you to go back to your apartment. I have removed my men from surveillance duties." Jai saw Inspector Khanna off and came back to Bani.
Coming back to Bani, he stood in front of him and after several moments of silence he asked, "When are you going to back?"
Bani bit her lower lip and glancing at him, "After we eat, I cooked us a late lunch. I am rather hungry as I haven't eaten anything today."
"Why don't you eat, I am not really hungry. Let me know when you go, I'll be in my study." Without waiting for her response, Jai strode away to his study.

A week later Dr Mishra was out of the hospital and actually came back to work for couple of hours. His thrashed lab had been refitted and looked brand spanking new, Jai had got the latest and best. He had come down to check if Dr Mishra wanted anything else to carry out his work. He had also hired a new lab assistant, Laxmi, a new grad recently out of college…according to her professor she was brilliant and needed to be challenged. Laxmi had spent hours going through Dr Mishra's notes and research to try and familiarize herself on Dr Mishra's work. She was thrilled to be working with such a noted scientist.
It was week since Bani had returned back to her place. Jai had not bothered to call her or see her and she had left it at that telling her self it was better if she left him alone to work out his anger. By Saturday night though she was feeling cranky, with nothing to occupy her, her thoughts returned back to Jai. It had been comforting staying at his place, knowing he was in a room next to her. But Jai needed to make his feelings clear, he had never talked about her being part of his life and Bani wanted more than anything now to have a permanent relationship in her life…wanted someone to love…someone who loved her…she wanted Jai in her life. After a sleepless night, Bani had got up and after mulling over phoning Jai, she dressed and decided to drive over, it was better to talk face to face rather than on the phone.
When she pulled in she saw Jai's car was still in the driveway, which meant he was home. If Jai was surprised to see her he didn't show it, instead he greeted her nonchalantly and followed her to the sitting area. After an awkward silence, Jai drawled, "Are you going to say something or just sit like a statue Bani?"
Getting riled, Bani snapped at him, "Why can't you talk? You've been avoiding me since I left. No phone calls or nothing."
"Oh, forgive me, I did not realize you were expecting my call." Eyebrows arched, he smirked at her, noting rising colour in her cheeks. Let her get angry, she couldn't wait to get away from him, left as soon as Inspector Khanna said she could go.
"Fine I will leave, I knew it was a mistake to come. We can never hold a conversation without ending up bickering." Brushing her hand across her eyes, she stormed off towards the door, but before she reached it, Jai had caught her up and grabbing her hand said, "No you are not going yet, we haven't finished talking Bani."
Tilting her head slightly she looked at him through teary eyes, "what is there to talk about? You don't l…" She stopped abruptly, the angst visible on her face.
Relaxing his hold, he said softly, "Finish what you were going to say."
"I was just saying you don't love me." Bani stood nervously waiting for him to explode.
Instead Jai cupped her chin and lifted it up so as to look in her eyes, "who told you I don't love you?"
"You!" Bani whispered.
"How can tell you if I am not sure what you feel for me Bani. I don't know what you feel for me…You are always touchy." He looked at her eyes, glittering with tears and he brought his face close to her, almost touching, "tell me what do you feel for me Bani?"
"I…" she paused, took a deep breath and her eyes darkening with emotions, "I love you Jai." She felt her heartbeats still as she said the words…the words she had wanted him to hear. Both remained quiet for several seconds, then Jai smiled, this was the definitely the best thing both of them could have said to each other…something they need to say to each other often. He gently took her hand and brought to it to his lips, "where do we go from here Bani? Do you want to get married?"
A small flickering of smile spread on her lips, thinking of a suitable reply, she slipped her arms around his back, "Do I have to give you my answer now? Can we take it a little slow? I mean we just admitted our feelings to each other."
Nodding his head, he kissed her lightly on the lips, "how slow do you want to go? Does it mean no sharing the bed?" His questions extracted sweet laughter from her, "sharing bed does not mean going slow, Jai."
Taking a step back he looked and spoke, his tone firm, "I want you to move in here with me. We don't have to share a room until you are ready to do so."
"I can live with that. Can I go home and pack some stuff and you can come in couple of hours and help me bring it back."
"I can do that." Feeling elated, he walked her to the door, put a chaste kiss on her forehead, "Go, I'll see you soon."

(Warning: don't read the next section if you are squeamish and have problem with violence. Contains attempted rape scene. It was necessary as it went with AD's character as of being obsessed with Bani and seeking revenge.)
Bani packed her clothes and other necessities in a couple of suitcase. Then found a box and put files, books and other items that she thought she might need. The rest of the stuff can be moved slowly, she can decide what she wanted to take and what she can leave. It was over two hours since she had been back at her apartment, Jai should be coming soon she thought.
When the doorbell rang, Bani rushed to the door unlocked it. As she opened the door, she gasped to find AD standing there. Hiding her annoyance, she didn't move to let him in, instead asked him coldly, "What do you want AD? I am busy."
AD just smiled superciliously, "Nice welcome Bani, I thought I would pay you a social call. I mean friends can visit friends."
Her voice level rose a little as Bani tried to control her anger, "We are not friends AD, just business associates and I would appreciate if you leave."
What happened next caught her with surprise, AD's hand shot out and shoved her into the apartment and clicked the door shut. Angered by his action, Bani glared at him, "Leave now AD, I don't want to call security."
Grabbing her arm and digging his fingers in he snarled, "Always threatening me aren't you? Tell me what does Jai Walia have that I don't have. I don't see you pushing him around. In fact if Jai Walia wants ten crores he gets it just like that. In fact you don't have any problem sleeping with him."
Fear gripped her tight, how did AD know about the money. The only people who knew about the financing was Mr Saini, herself, Jai and his brother-in-law Adi, and Inspector Khanna.
"How do you know about the money Jai borrowed?" Bani asked, trying to keep her mind focused on the situation, but hoping and praying Jai would come soon. His face grimacing into ugliness he snapped, "I have my sources and I am not stupid enough to tell you. If you had given me that kind of money when I asked I could have competed with him fairly, but no you miss high and mighty, told me I was way over my head in debt."
Anger taking over fear Bani pushed him as hard as she could and shouted, "just get out of my house now."
"Not before I finish what I came to do!" AD watched as fear showed on her face. He gloated he had the power to get under her skin.
As Bani tried to run into her bedroom, AD grabbed her and threw her on the floor. Trying to stand up, AD just slammed the heel of his hand on her jaw making her reel with pain. Tears brimming her eyes now, she tried to look at him. Towering over her watching her cowering under him, AD mocked her, "I am going to enjoy taking you Bani. I tried to be nice to you, but no you wanted to play hard. Well you are going to regret being nasty to me."
Bani winced as he stepped on one her leg pressing it down and screamed, "Stop it AD. You're hurting me AD, please why are you doing this?" Tears rolled down her face as shots of pain trembled through her body. He smiled and dropped down on his knees, running his finger down the side of her face he brought his face close to hers and whispered harshly, "how does my touch feel Bani? You sure have soft skin." Laughing gutturally, he ground his lips down on her. Bani writhed trying to escape his mouth but he grasped her hair tightly and held her still. She tasted blood from her lips and tried to move but he had her pinned good and hard. She felt repulsed as his hand skimmed up over her br***** and griping her shirt at the neck, ripped it open. Horror of what he was about to do swam in her mind and she fainted.
The feel of cold water on her face, jolted her eyes open to see AD staring coldly at her. "Did you think I was going to do anything while you are out cold. I want to watch you when I take you Bani. I want to feel the pleasure of your screams…I want to see you begging me to stop." As his hand moved down to tug at her jeans, he shifted slightly. Bani mustering up strength brought her knees up catching him in the groin. Flinching with pain, he rasped, "You b****!" and brought his fist down on her face. Bani screamed and her head rolled sideways as the blow knocked her out.
Getting up and AD kicked her and swore loudly.
The shattering of the door caught him attention and he turned sharply to see Jai followed by security guard storming in. Jai had been calling Bani for half an hour without getting any answer. He knew she was still up there as her car was still parked up at the front of the building and the security guard had not seen her go out. The security guard downstairs had tried calling her, but not receiving any reply, had taken the elevator up with Jai. Hearing the scream as they approached her door. The guard had fired his gun at the lock on the door without hesitation.
AD lunged at Jai and knocked him down and reached in his jacket and pulled out a gun. Before he could aim at Jai the guard fired a round of shot, AD looked shocked as the bullets tore through him. The gun slipped from his hand as he toppled over.
Jai rushed over to Bani and winced with pain at seeing her bruised and battered body; He used his jacket to cover her up. Lifting her up, he held her until the police and ambulance arrived.

It was a harrowing night for Jai as he sat beside Bani at the hospital. The doctor had examined her and stitched up her cuts. She was heavily sedated to help her sleep. But she was restless even under drugs…the trauma being subconsciously replayed in her mind. Jai watched helplessly as she lashed out her arms and legs. Finally exhaustion took over and her body stilled into a deep sleep.
When she woke up next day, she gazed bewilderedly around. Seeing Jai looking at her, she grabbed him by the arm and shook him, screaming, "where were you when I needed you. I told you to come in two hours…you were late and I thought it was you when I opened the door... and he tried to…." She stopped and cried uncontrollably, pushing him away as he tried to hold her.
Tears rolled down Jai's cheek as he watched her helplessly…how could he tell her he was sorry he hadn't come earlier or he should not have let her go alone. The nurses rushed in as the monitor sounded alarm at the rapidly rising heart rate. One of the nurses held her down while the other injected her with sedatives. Couple of minutes later Bani succumbed to drowsiness. The nurses asked him to leave for a while saying they would call inform him of her condition.
Jai asked the doctor looking after her, if there was a female doctor specialized in victim counselling for people in her condition. He would like to talk with her to see what can be done to help with the recovery. The doctor said he would set up an appointment with a therapist and let him know of it. Jai returned back to the room where Bani was but waited outside. Dr Rano arrived couple of hours later to see Bani.
Dr Rano worked with the police and hospital to provide counselling to victims of assault, especially women and children. After listening to the doctor and Jai, she asked Jai if she could see Bani first, explaining it was easier if the person talked the whole incident out. First thing to do was to make sure the victim does not blame her self. It was easy in such cases for victims to fall into the trap of saying that they provoked the attack because of their behaviour/action. Jai liked the young doctor. She was smart, yet when she talked with you, there was genuine concern and sincerity in her words.
Bani was drifting in and out of sleep when Dr Rano entered. She sat down next to the bed and looked at the face and arms covered with bruises. She looked at the swollen face, looked as if her face had taken the brunt of the assaults, lucky she hadn't ended up with shattered face. She reread the notes she had made while she waited for Bani to open her eyes. Her patience was rewarded as Bani finally opened her eyes and stared at her. Smiling warmly, Dr Rano put her hand on top of hers and said softly, "Bani my name is Rano, I am one of the doctor that is going to help your recover. How do you feel?"
The question opened the floodgates as Bani wept uncontrollably. Rano sat and watched as her body shook with her crying. It was good she was crying, lot of the time the victims withdraw into themselves and it takes months to get them to finally breakdown. Again she sat patiently for the sobbing to subside. Eventually tears dried up and Bani lay quietly sniffing. Rano looked at her with warmly, "Feel a little better…It's ok to cry, it lessens the hurt you feel. Listen to me Bani, it is better for you to talk this out. I know it will be painful but its necessary to confront the guilt you might feel heads on. I will let you decide if you want to talk to me now or we can wait till later."
Bani looked at the kindness in her eyes, but just shook head and whispered, "I don't think I can…"
"That's fine, I will come back tomorrow. Jai is waiting outside, can he come in?" Jai had asked Rano he will only go in if Bani was ready to see him, he didn't want her having another hysterical attack. Rano watched as Bani battled with her emotions…the victims usually felt dirty…the sense of violation of their body…the fear she will be rejected by the loved ones was uppermost in their mind. And in many cases it happens, her family abandons the victim as if she was of no value now… a piece of garbage to be thrown away. Rano gave her hug and said gently, "I think you should see him, if it wasn't for him it could have been worse for you. He saved you from that monster." Bani nodded her head and whispered, "Do you mind staying with me while he is here."
"I can stay with you as long as want. Lets freshen you up a bit before he comes in." Rano walked over to the bathroom and came back with a wet face cloth and helped wipe her face and then taking a brush, brushed her hair back. She squeezed Bani's hand and went outside.
Few minutes later Rano and Jai walked in. Tears rolled down as she looked at the pain reflected in his eyes. His face looked haggard from the lack of sleep. Jai just gathered her in arms and held her, rocking her…caressing her as if trying to erase the pain and hurt she felt. Rano quietly slipped out to give them privacy. Jai didn't know when they had both fell asleep. He looked at her pale face partly covered by her hair, sleeping soundly on his chest. Gently brushing the hair away, he raised her slightly and lowered her on the pillow and pulling up the blanket to cover her up, just sat and watched her sleep.
A week of counselling session with Rano brought some progress. Bani didn't need to be sedated any more and the bruises were fading fast. Jai spent as much time with her at the hospital, mostly sitting and holding her. Bani asked Rano if she could get permission to go home, she needed to get away from the hospital. Jai picked her up and took her back to his home. He told her she was staying with him from now on…he wasn't going to let her out of his sight. Her room had been set up with her clothes and items from her apartment. Jai had even set up a home office for her so that she could work from home when she was ready to do so.
As darkness fell, Bani closed all the windows and turned on all the lights that were in the room including the bathroom lights. Somehow with the dark the fear of someone coming to hurt her again returned. She sat upright watching the closed door. When Jai opened the door she screamed, Jai rushed to her and shook her gently, "Bani it's only me…look at me…"
Bani clutched at his shirt and just whimpered, "Stay with me Jai, don't leave alone please. He is going to come back and hurt me." Calming her down, he laid her gently on the bed. Jai got in beside her and just held until they both fell asleep.
That night Bani relived her attack in the nightmare…she saw his ugly face laughing at her as his hands ripped the shirt off her. His black eyes glittered with evil as his hands roamed all over her. He wouldn't stop however much she begged him to stop…he laughed even harder with each plea. She screamed and thrashed her arms as he brought his face close to her….
Jai had to grip her arms tight to stop her flailing her arms. He talked softly, "Bani its only a nightmare, look you are safe with me." He just held her until she stilled and then gently sitting her upright he made her drink some water, her clothes were drenched in sweat and he removed them gently and put on a fresh set of clothes and tried to make her go to sleep again. He felt her body shake as she cried softly. There was nothing he could do except just hold her.
For next several weeks Bani relieved her attack in the nightmares. In the morning she would wake up tired and exhausted from lack of sleep. Jai tried to be home with Bani as much as possible. He always made sure someone was keeping an eye on her if her wasn't home. He took Bani to therapy session with Dr Rano and gradually Ban's nightmares reduced and she made an attempt to do things for herself. She felt pride when she started doing little bit work from home and asked Mr Saini to come down and bring her up to date with the going on at the business.

Inspector Khanna finally was able to close the case of Vikram's murder. Luck had played part Pia had been shot several times by AD had somehow managed to survive. She told Inspector Khanna how AD had been consumed with hatred towards Jai Walia and Bani ever since Bani had turned down financing he wanted. He had planned and carried out the kidnapping. After he collected the ransom, he had gloated about how easy it had been get the money from Bani. It was when he told her what he planned to do to Bani that Pia had tried to stop him and he shot her.
Inspector Khanna informed Jai AD had used Pia to lure Vikram into giving information about Dr Mishra'work and the security around the labs. It seemed Vikram had managed to leak out a lot of confidential information about the company to Pia. They had managed to trace the deposit of ten crore into AD's offshore account the day after the ransom payment and would be able to recover the money within few days. Jai told him he was just gland AD was dead. He couldn't care less if he got the money back or not.
Three months later Jai, Bani and other key member of Walia Group were seated outside the large window looking into the test lab. Dr Mishra, Rano and Dr Goel were going to do their first test. This was Bani's first visit outside of Walia house since the attack. Bani had refused initially to come but Jai somehow persuaded her saying he wanted her to at the testing…be the first to see that her investment had been fruitful.
Holding her hand Jai watched intently at activity in the lab. Suddenly the lab for few seconds was flooded with bright green glow, which died as suddenly as it erupted. The lab filled with up with sounds of cheers and claps as the two doctors were looked dazed. Bani sat and watched as Jai and his staff talked enthusiastically as they analyzed the data on the computer screens…the scientific terms and words meant nothing to her. It was several hours later they were able to leave the building to go back home.
Jai took Bani to a restaurant for celebration dinner. He had requested a secluded table so Bani would at ease, away from gaze of other patrons as more often Jai found someone he knew would come over interrupt his dinner. He had got used to Bani not saying much but today she seemed to be making effort to talk by asking him some questions about the test she had seen. As he watched her as she ate a few mouthful than just picked at the food. She was still too thin as she ate very small portions of the food. She refused to order her favourite desert…previously she had polished off a large bowl of choclate brownie sundae in minutes.
Holding her hand Jai looked at Bani and asked, "Bani how about we go on holiday? I was waiting for this testing to be over before taking some time off work. You know we can go somewhere quiet where we can just relax."
"Yes, some where quiet would be good. You need a to get away from me and work and … " Bani trailed off as her mind seemed to cloud over with something.
Jai knew what she was thinking about, "Bani, I didn't mean me. I want you with me. I want to take you away from here for a while…please." He saw tears cloud her eyes and getting up he hugged her, "Bani please don't cry. I just want you to be happy again. I want us to get married Bani. More than anything in the world I want take care of you for the rest of my life."
Tightening her arms around him Bani muffled into his chest, "I can't marry you Jai…I am not sure if I can let anyone…" Jai felt her tears as wet his shirt. Pushing her face up he wiped the tears away and whispered, "I love you so much Bani…" He trailed off unable to tell her he would wait for eternity to make love to her once again.

Two weeks later…Fiji, Jai and Bani arrived at the secluded island resort where Jai had reserved a villa for them. The island had pristine white sand beaches surrounded by azure sea. The lush vegetation around the villa provided privacy to the guests. The self-contained villa was luxurious with king size bed, Jacuzzi and even a private swimming pool. A maid service took care of the housekeeping and there was a restaurant and bar at the main resort hotel, which was easily accessible. It had been a while since Jai had taken time away from his business and gone away and he intended to just rest and relax and spend time with Bani. Adi had strict instructions not to call him unless it was an emergency.
The first night they just dined at the restaurant and retired early to bed as both were tired from the journey. Next morning Jai had already been for an early morning run on the beach when Bani woke up. Taking a long refreshing shower Bani put on a sundress and went to look for Jai. She found him lounging outside next to the swimming pool. He smiled lazily at her and asked, "Did you have good sleep?" Bani nodded her head, "Are we going to have breakfast?" Her stomach was rumbling, as she had not eaten much last night.
"Yes, do want to go to the restaurant or I can make you something here?"
"Let's go to the restaurant, I would enjoy the walk through the beautiful gardens. Let me just get my sandals."
Bani came back couple of minutes later, donning sandals and a straw hat to keep the sun off. After a healthy breakfast, feasting on tropical fruits and freshly baked bread, they spent the morning exploring the resort. Later in the day they strolled down to the beach, Jai swam in the sea while Bani was just content to lie on the lounger and watch him. Finally tiring from swimming, Jai came and lay down next to Bani and dozed off. Bani sat and watched his face relax as he slept. There were tiny lines around his eyes and his hair curled naturally as it dried. She realized he must blow dry his hair straight and use a lot of gel as she had never seen his hair wavy before. She felt the temptation to run her hand through the curls and almost touched his hair before withdrawing her hand again.
At night Jai cooked a simple meal for them, which they ate outside on the balcony and watched the sunset. The orange glow reflected on the water and the gentle waves shimmered with colours.
They spent days hiking around the island, taking beach picnics and Jai tried out snorkelling and sailing catamaran. Bani's appetite improved with activity out in the fresh air and she started to fill out her as gentle curves covered the bony frame once visible. Jai took her shopping where she tried on brightly coloured dressed, t-shirts and shorts. \
One day whilst walking on the beach they watched as a young couple got married on the beach, complete with traditional wedding dress, flowers and music. As the couple kissed, tears flowed down Bani's cheek and she quietly stood up and walked away. Jai left her alone for a while, wanting to give her time to regain her composure. He wondered why the wedding affected her so much. Did see get upset seeing two people in love committing themselves to each other or was it the thought that she would never be able to commit herself to someone. That night Jai ordered dinner to be delivered to the villa.
Setting the table with candles and flowers, the staff laid the table out for Jai complete with chilled champagne. Jai slipped his favourite cd in the music system and waited for Bani to come down from freshening up.
You say you want
Diamonds on a ring of gold
You say you want
Your story to remain untold
But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you
You say youll give me
A highway with no one on it
Treasure just to look upon it
All the riches in the night
You say youll give me
Eyes in a moon of blindness
A river in a time of dryness
A harbour in the tempest
But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you
You say you want
Your love to work out right
To last with me through the night
You say you want
Diamonds on a ring of gold
Your story to remain untold
Your love not to grow cold
All the promises we break

He was lost in the song being played that he didn't see Bani coming until she put her hand on her shoulder. Instinctively he reached and pulled her gently on to his lap and wrapped his arms around her. He felt Bani stiffen and he relaxed his hold giving her an opportunity to move away but she did not, instead she stayed wrapping her hands around his neck and laid her head on his shoulder. They stayed wrapped around each other until the music stopped. Brushing strands of hair from her cheek, Jai kissed her lightly and said softly, "Lets eat before the food gets cold."
That night instead of Bani curling away from him and falling asleep, she turned towards him and pressed her lips gingerly on his, initiating a gentle kiss. He felt warm tear on his cheek as Bani whispered on his lips, "Jai, will you marry me...."
Jai pressed her close to him and whispered back, "Yes."
On their last of stay at the resort Jai organized a Fijian wedding on the beach The morning had dawned bright and sunny and they were both separated from the morning and given traditional coconut oil massage and dressed in traditional tapa dress complete with flower headdress. In the evening, Bani was carried on a decorated platform to where Jai waited for her and a minister completed the marriage ceremony. There opted to have dinner on the beach after the wedding. A live group played traditional music while they dined under the stars. Bamboo stakes were stuck in the sand holding candles and flowers. They slow danced until Bani declared she was tired.
Jai carried her into the villa and up to the bedroom where he set her down on the floor. He kissed her asked to change her into her nightdress as he went downstairs to bring up champagne. When he came back up he found Bani sitting on the bed still in her tapa dress. Jai looked at her questioningly and came and sat next to her. He asked her, "What is the matter Bani? Why haven't you changed?"
Without looking at him Bani took his hand and put it on her bare shoulder, "I want you to take my dress off. I am scared Jai…"
Jai gently took her in his arms and rested his head on top of his head, "Bani I told you before I don't want to do anything until you are ready."
Raising her head she gazed in his eyes and whispered, "I want you to erase feeling of his hands from my body…remove the pain I feel at not being able to love you like I want to… A moment of hesitation before Jai moved his mouth close to hers, he felt her lips trembling even before he touched them. He said softly, "We will take it one step at a time, build on that step and maybe one day Bani will be ready to make love."
