Jigyasa stepped into the hall as she heard all the commotion outside.
It looked like Jai and Ranveer arrived from Bangalore.
+++++++++++
Jigyasa peered from the hall on to the car portico, she was surprised to see not one but three cars in the drive way. She saw Jai first, shielding some one behind him. Now her curiosity ignited she stepped a little bit more into the door way to get a closer look. Tony and Victor jostled her aside to run ahead to pick up the luggage and welcome Jai and Ranveer effectively blocking Jigyasa's view. She was irritated and was about to give a piece of her mind when she saw Ranveer stepping forward with a small child holding his hand tightly. The child seemed a little scared and had a hand pushing what seemed like glasses on to his nose. Jigyasa's curiosity intensified and she went behind Maasi's wholesome girth to peer over her shoulder.
What greeted her shocked her beyond words. Jai was solicitously assisting a beautiful young woman with a hand in her small of the back over the stairs and the woman was holding a small girl's hand and looking up nervously. Jigyasa almost did not recognize her. But something about the way she carried herself with poise and pride reminded her about the young self assured girl from Mt.Abu. Her eyes widened as big as the saucers; Jai and Bani together? Who were the little children? Just then the second car door opened and Rano stepped out. She was wearing a red salwar kameez, she didn't look like a gangly teenager anymore, she looked like a tall model that just stepped out from the runway. Jigyasa stared at them uncomprehendingly. What is Rano doing here with Ranveer? That boy looked familiar now, from all the photographs that she received. Could he be Rano's kid? Her heart sank like a stone, did this mean that both Bani and Rano are back in the Walia mansion? She bit her lower lip nervously. This is not going to fare well for her. There would be recriminations, she was certain of that. She is not stupid, she loved her brother even though he was the apple of her mother's eye and later Maasi's and the declared heir to the Walia throne. She had a clue that her dad was not all he could be in the business arena and the last few years of his life, he was chasing the skirts of young women more than climbing up the financial ladders of success.
She stood in the background as Maasi, Dadi and Anu went to the door step with Aarti and welcomed the newcomers with open arms. She gasped as she saw the Urn filled with rice on the threshold of the door step and a plate filled with vermillion water. They were welcoming the new bahu, shouldn't she be the one to do that, welcome a brother and his new wife into the household with lighted diyas and sweets? Why was she being relegated to the back and not even consulted? She could only guess at the reasons of her exclusion, especially if Rano was involved in the cozy picture.
Jai felt the trepidation within Bani and Reya. The silence was more heartening than nervous talk. He could see Reya dragging her feet over the steps and refusing to look at anyone in particular. He slowly extended his hand out to her and empathized with her fear as she latched on to it as if she was drowning in a whirlpool. His hand engulfed her small fist instantly and rubbed it gently, trying to comfort her. He reached out with his other hand and placed it on Bani's elbow, steadying her steps as she stumbled a bit. When she looked up to thank him, he smiled gently, trying to sooth her nerves. She smiled back reluctantly into his eyes, what she saw there instantly calming her.
When she reached the doorstep, she and Jai automatically bent and touched Maasi and Dadi's feet. She was touched when they were both enveloped in a warm hug. The aarti was performed duly, the blessings given, the sweets fed to all three of them. In a surprising move, Jai reached the plate and took the Sindoor from the plate and filled it in Bani's maang. Maasi wiped her tears surreptitiously and Adi hugged his friend with exuberance. Dadi and Anu ensured that Bani stepped into the house with her right foot forward and gently tilted the urn filled rice so it spilled forward. Then she was encouraged to step in the plate filled with Vermillion water and mark the marble floor with her footsteps going forward. Bani performed everything she was told like a robot, not refusing anything or anyone. She was dazed like her daughter. She wasn't expecting any of this and was touched that the Walia household took so much effort in organizing all of this.
Her eyes filled with tears at all the fuss that was being made on Reya, people hugging her, kissing her, carrying her even though the little girl was resisting all of the new found affection that was being shown to her as if it was foreign. Even the domestics were awed at the little girl who was their master's daughter, they touched her cheeks and ruffled her hair and laughed when she tried to pull away from them and made faces.
Jai stepped in front of Bani and pulled Reya so they stood as a family unit, his one hand circling Bani's shoulder and the other hand wrapped around Reya. She could see the muscle twitching in his cheek and instantly she lifted her palm to cover it on the hand that was resting on her shoulder. Their fingers intertwined with each other and she ached to rest her face on his hand.
Together they turned to see Ranveer, Rano and Rohan stepping into the house. Ranveer took a lesson from his mama-ji and filled Rano's maang with Sindoor. Tears fell from Adi's cheeks unashamedly as he picked up Rohan and hugged him with all the affection he possessed. Ranveer smiled through happy tears as he witnessed the open love displayed by his father. Over his father's head he eyed his mother standing on the side, her cheeks flushed and holding her pallu nervously. She eyed the momentary disgust that flashed in his expressive orbs and looked away to the ceiling as if she didn't care.
He took a step toward her and stopped short by Maasi.
"Beta, not now!" the strict tones of the elder made him turn his back on his mother. He held Rano and picked up Rohan and walked to where Jai was standing and stood along with them until they collectively were given a formal welcome in to the house.
Maasi led both the couples into the prayer room and made them sit together. The priest performed a simple wedding ceremony and made Ranveer and Jai tie the MangalSutras in Rano and Bani's necks respectively. They took the saat pheras around the hastily made fire and then the sindoor was placed again in both the brides' partings in front of the God. Maasi and Dadi gave rings the couples to exchange.
Rohan and Reya sat next to Adi and Anu and looked at their parents in wonder. They threw the turmeric rice at the couple enthusiastically and clapped their hands with excitement. As the priest put the tikka for everyone, much to the amusement of the elders, Rohan insisted that he get one exactly like his dad's. Reya brought her tongue out and made a face at him and he indulged in throwing the turmeric rice at her.
When finally the ceremony was over, Jai pulled Bani to her feet. He looked at the priest menacingly. "This time it's forever, no more partings right?"
The priest laughed nervously, "Ji- iss baar, iss vivah sampurn ho gayi, aur koyi nahin ayega aap ke beech mein" (Yes, this time, the marriage is complete and no one is going to come between you).
Jai dug into his pocket and removed his wallet from inside. He gave the priest whatever was in his wallet.
Maasi laughed heartily.

Rohan tugged at Ranveer's arm frantically as they walked into the great room. Ranveer went down on his haunches to listen to Rohan's staged whisper.
"Who is Tom and who is Jerry?" Ranveer smiled at no one in particular.
"I think your dadu is definitely Jerry, he reminds me of a little mouse in front of your dadi ma – she is the Tom for sure…she has claws to prove" Ranveer said a little maliciously.
"Oh!" he looked at Jigyasa standing a little stunned in the hall.
He ran and gave her a hug, "Dadi Maa!!"
Jigyasa pulled the pleats of her sari from the child's hands and stood back with a grimace.
Rohan looked at Rano crestfallen. He didn't understand why Jigyasa treated him with distaste. The child never had to deal with such contempt from an adult before.
Jai sighed, I guess it is time for a fitting punishment for Jigyasa's crimes.
He wanted this done quietly and without the knowledge of the servants and the children. He asked Aditya to take the kids into the garden and show them around and excused himself into the den summoning Jigyasa and Tarun to come behind him.
Jigyasa stepped into the room sullenly. She knew a big lecture was going to come looking at Jai's closed expression.
"Jigyasa!" Jai's voice was quiet. He was trying hard to control his temper. He never called her Di, even though she was five years older to him, in fact he was always the one who looked after her, rescued her, tried to be the diplomat between Adi and her during their many squabbles.
She gave him a sidelong look.
"How do you know the children have Walia or Bali blood, don't you think you should have a DNA done before you bring every Tom, Dick and Harry into the home?"
Jai lost his temper then. He bared his teeth and brought his fist down on the desk, "Damn you, Jigyasa! How dare you say such nasty things? I have no doubt Reya is mine, and Ranveer can tell you unequivocally Rohan is his." He took a deep breath.
"Look, I don't want to argue with you anymore, I don't even want to see you in this house anymore for that matter. I am giving you 24 hours to get out of my house! I asked Tarun to draw up the papers to give you Dad's property, there is a small ancestral house in Panvel where you can live, the trust fund that Dad gave you gives you a modest amount to live on with one or two servants, a car and some monthly expenses for the rest of your life. I don't want to have anything to do with you! What you did to Bani and Rano was beyond cruel, I can't even imagine a woman doing that to another woman. You not only left them to fend for themselves in their condition, but you overlooked your own grandchild, kept the information, photographs from everyone." Jai looked sad.
"You had everything given to you on a platter; money, love, affection, comfort, health and three beautiful children and an adoring husband. I respected you so much that, before every major work that I started I came to you to seek your blessings, right after Maasi." He stared at her for a bit, his eyes filled with pain, "Jigyasa, I have asked Tarun to write a new will – the house and the company will belong to my wife and any children I have and might have in the future" He paused, rubbing a tired hand on his forehead. "I have made sure that Ranveer, Sahil and Anu's futures are taken care of, they will have a trust fund set up for each of them, which they will receive at the age of thirty. They are welcome to study as much as they want and I will pay for their education. I would encourage them to work for a little bit, I think it will build character. As much as I want to remain close to you, I am disheartened that you don't realize your mistakes! Today, I was appalled that you didn't even allow your grandson to come and hug you, your selfishness made me cringe that I have a sister like you." Jai looked down at the will and the keys to the ancestral house in Panvel. He took out the checkbook and wrote it out for Jigyasa. When he handed it to her, he couldn't look into her face anymore.
Each word he said was like a stab wound to Jigyasa. Everything she did and has done in her mind was for the good of the Walia household, and here was her brother booting her out his house, all because of the Dixit girls. Tears started trickling down her cheeks, and she rubbed them with the back of her hands. For the first time, she felt and looked older than her forty three years.
"Bhaiyya…you don't know these girls, they come from dirt poor background and trap rich men like you and Ranveer, I was only looking out for you, and Ranveer…for God's sake he was only eighteen!" Jigyasa tried to explain in a high pitched voice.
Jai held his palm in front of him, stopping Jigyasa from saying further. "Jigyasa, please! What you don't understand, is that those poor girls made something of themselves, Bani is a writer, she has written several best sellers, she is rich in her own right, Rano has an excellent job, as good as the one Ranveer has, Pia is an upcoming clothes designer – and what you don't know and they don't know is, Mr. Singhania is their grandfather and he wrote a will before he passed on with sizeable trust funds in their names, and I invested the money for them, its grown in a considerable amount. They are rich, not just in money but in values and love…Now you don't have any of those Jigyasa, I would be surprised, ecstatic in fact, if you ever make something of yourself and be on par with those girls!" Jai turned away to look out of the window. He could see Rohan and Reya climbing the yellow hummer in the front yard and animatedly talking to Sahil and Adi.
"Jigyasa, I know about the ten lacs you gave to raise Rohan, here is the check that Bani wrote out for you – she said that she is sorry she took it, at the time she needed it. She said you might need it now." He placed it on the corner of the table.
"Jigyasa, one more thing…Anu is four months pregnant, a little too late for the abortion I suppose, I was going to ask her to run away from home earlier and not let you know…but I am just not made out to be a ba***rd I suppose, I couldn't let myself do it. You can call me weak if you want! I will take care of her and her child. Rohit is Ranvijay's son, I don't like his father and his aunt – but for Anu's sake, I am willing to overlook it. We will have her marriage in about a week's time, please feel free to participate in all the arrangements and the wedding. I just don't want to see you for a considerable time, if Ranveer and Adi forgive you, then it's their choice, they can come and visit you in Panvel, but not in this house!"
"Tarun, please walk Jigyasa through all the paperwork and make sure she has all the things she needs" Jai looked at Tarun levelly and stopped before he reached the door.
"Jigyasa, can I have the keys, please? I think they belong rightfully to Bani from today" Jai stretched his hand out toward Jigyasa.
Jigyasa stared at his back with loathing and dropped the keys in his outstretched palm rudely.
+++++++++++++++++
Just as he left, Ranveer walked in. He looked at her with so much sadness, she started weeping uncontrollably.
"I did it for your best, I didn't want you to be stuck with an unwanted child, you were so young and you had a bright future in front of you" Jigyasa sobbed and sniffed.
Tarun excused himself and left the room.
"Just like you were stuck with me? An unwanted child when you were so young and had such a bright future in front of you?" Ranveer asked her quietly.
Jigyasa looked stunned for a moment. Her expressive eyes went over Ranveer's serious face. "No! I loved you, I never thought that you were an unwanted child, I willingly gave up my studies for you, I never regretted it for a moment."
"But you thought I was incapable of the same strength? I wouldn't be able to look after my child and be a man?" Ranveer's mouth twisted bitterly.
"I heard how I was conceived before you were married, Dad married you and made it legal, didn't he? Didn't he take care of you and me? How could you let Rano handle this alone, mother? How could you let my son to come into this world a ba***rd?"
"You knew all along about him, she sent you the photographs, pictures he drew, letters about how he was doing? You didn't share any of it with me! How dare you try to hitch me up with Raashi? How dare you do this Mama-ji, he always looked out for you and took care of us. What really bothered me about you today, is when you turned away from my son, he made an overture to you, trying to hug and get close to you, and you rejected him, you hurt his innocence." Ranveer's voice was gained strength with remembered pain.
"Rano is married to me now. I am going to do good by her and by Rohan. I am in love with that woman, that is probably news to you! Yes, it was by mistake she got pregnant with my child, but the truth is she is the only woman for me." He reached over to his weeping mother and gave her a sweet hug, "I am sorry, mother…I am so angry with you right now, I need to stay away from you for a long while!" he smiled perfunctorily. "Good bye, mother!" He too turned and walked away leaving a broken woman behind sobbing her heart out. She crumbled to her knees with grief.
