Lovely update Sangs.

haha usually if superwoman would talk like that, i would not be happy, but your ff, i LOVE it.

I think i actually like both of them equally in this ff. Isn't that amazing???

Oh i got one request, don't have the confession yet, take some time, have these small talks/communication b/w them, it's really good to read something different. Romance can wait.😃

Sangs i love the way you write, the way you portray everything, it's almost like reality which i can imagine happening.

I am too tired to think of a song.

Take care,

Shina

Sangita, a belated Christmas and Happy New Year in advance.

Ah...our Jai😳, he knows what he wants and is flirting with our Bani right under Mayank's nose.😆

Should have guessed, nothing or more like no one can stop him from doing what he wants.😆

Shouldn't have given you all tose hints and ideas to get rid of Mayank for dinner. By the way isn't Mayank supposed to work in Chicago??? or are they moving there after marriage???😕😃

Loved it completely and cant wait to read more.

A Very Happy New Year to all of you.

This part is dedicated to my Secret Santa : Hkaurk22

Part IX

The Aftermath

Jai quietly slid down from the kitchen counter too, still clutching a half-eaten piece of cucumber in his hand, waiting for Bani to unleash her anger on him. He hadn't realized that his statement would anger Bani so much and he was thinking of an explanation when a miracle happened.

'Bani beta, where are you?' her Mother's voice chimed as she entered the kitchen. Catching Jai there looking guilty and Bani with a murderous look on her face, she asked
'Well what happened? Looks like another version of the Battle of Waterloo. Well for one, you two can fight later. Its dinner time now. Bani please help me set the tables and Jai …'

Jai replied hurriedly 'Ok Aunty, I will leave you two now. Sorry Bani', saying so he left the kitchen casting a apologetic glance along Bani's way which she didn't even acknowledge. Jai scooted off to the Hall where the others had assembled.

The dinner was quite a homely affair, simple yet tasty. Everybody praised Bani for her culinary skills, including Jai, while Bani sat quietly through the entire dinner, barely eating anything. Mayank tried to speak to her a number of times but he gave up after receiving a dozen or more mono-syllabic answers.

'Is this how he is going to react to her when she's feeling down? I think I will have to give him a personal dressing down', Jai thought.

Jai noticed her and felt somewhat guilty. He mentally cursed himself for making things difficult for Bani, after all the truth was that she was betrothed to somebody else and nothing would change matters now. But he didn't want Bani to be angry with him either and definitely not sad. He had to make things perfect for her even if it kills himself, Jai vowed to himself silently. He hadn't realized that Bani would be so touchy about this issue and somehow flared up. He had to quickly amend things.

After dinner, everybody assembled in the Hall as the maids cleared away the table. Mayank was once again speaking animatedly with Rakesh Uncle regarding some IPOs of major Indian software firms, Jai noted with ever increasing irritation. Rano and her friend were busy chatting and dreaming about their GMAT dreams. Arundhati Dixit was idling away with Maasi. But where was Bani? Jai thought.

He excused himself from the others and made his way to the upper floor. The Dixit Residence was not a big house; in fact it was a modestly sized two-storeyed house, with a terrace garden to die for. The Walia House was like a huge giant in comparison to this house but Jai loved being here, the warmth that seeped out of each and every nook and corner of this house generated an aura of well-being, love and happiness here, which was sorely missing in his palatial residence. Another missing factor was of course Bani.

Jai slowly went to Bani's room and opened the door to her room after a brief knock. A small lamp illuminated he entire room, casting eerie shadows, but Bani was not there. He closed the door and moved towards the terrace, the place that he loved to be in when he visited the Dixits and Bani knew about his this preference. The terrace door was slightly ajar and Jai slowly stepped into the terrace. He scanned the entire terrace but could not find Bani. Now he was getting afraid, did he really push her buttons badly? Where was she? He thought.

'Bani, Bani, where are you?' Jai asked softly as if afraid to break the silence. A soft dim light cast a magical glow on the garden as Jai noted the varying hues, shapes and colours of different species of flowers and smelt the sweet intoxicating scent of late evening bloom. He didn't have much time today though to appreciate the blossoms and was about to retrace his steps when he thought that he heard a small sniffle. He swiveled on his heels and made way towards the 'Bench', a place in this terrace garden, adjacent to the water tank in the terrace. It was an artificial construction, raised to the topmost elevated level of the tank, a hub of the delicate roses that Rakesh Uncle tended to lovingly and carefully. A small flight of steps led one to the 'bench', popularly called because of a circular beech created around the fence to seat people.

Jai mentally cursed himself 'Why didn't I think about the bench earlier?'

He cautiously made his way up the stairs, noting that the 3rd rung of the stair was a little loose. Will have to point it out to Rakesh Uncle, Jai thought.

Bani was surely sitting on the farthest corner of the bench, staring absently at the sight that the lit city was presenting in front of her, her face reflecting a vulnerability that Jai hadn't seen in recent times. Bani adopted a stiff composure once she felt Jai entering the 'bench'. Jai quietly went up to her and sat beside her. She didn't turn to acknowledge his presence, her eyes still trying to find the non-existent light in the distance. Jai looked at the roses situated at the centre of the elevation. He then slowly placed his hand over Bani's hands, placed on her lap. Bani tried to remove her hands from under his but Jai held on steadfastly. Both of them sat on the bench without uttering a single word and taking in the scenery around them.

After a while, Jai picked up Bani's right hand and held it in his own.

He mustered enough courage and said 'Bani, I am sorry if I have hurt you. It wasn't anything deliberate and …'

Bani turned towards him with stormy eyes 'If? That's something so easy for you to say Jai. But do you have any idea of what you are trying to do recently? I hust want to ask you something – why are you behaving like this?'

She pulled her hand away from Jai's and got up from her seat and moved towards the rose shrubs.

Jai, after a moment's hesitation, also followed her there.
'I don't know Bani, I really don't know why I am being such a jerk. Its nothing intentional Bani, please believe me. I myself don't know where all this is coming from. But I don't want to hurt you.'

'Then what's happening here Jai? You got to tell me. Unless and until you let anybody know, nobody can help you. You have to understand this Jai', Bani whispered.

Jai replied 'I know Bani. I can't pinpoint any reason. Maybe I am plain scared of losing you.'

'There I said it', Jai thought. He then stared up at the night sky.

Suddenly he felt a tug on his shoulder and he turned back to look into a pair of surprised eyes.

'Losing me Jai? Who ever gave you that idea? I am just getting married Jai, I am not going on a sabbatical. What gives you the idea that I would stop being friends with you after my marriage?' the questions flooded Jai and his senses.

His voice suddenly pitched up and he replied tartly 'I gathered this from the very fact that after marriage you would be in Chicago, so many thousands of miles away from me. Long distance friendships are ok I know, but what about if your best friend becomes your life and you don't know how to adjust without him/ her?'

Jai continued 'And I am not a six-year old, Bani, that people will have to spell out things for me. I know what I am talking about. And I am sure about my feelings too. Its just that you don't give me much credit for what I am.'

Bani stared at him incredulously for a while, extremely shocked, not knowing what to say or do. She snatched her hand away from Jai's shoulder and took a step backward.

'Jai, where is all this coming from? We are best friends and we will always remain best friends no matter what. How can distance destroy friendships? Or don't you have enough faith in our friendship to begin with and you feel that it wil bite the dust after I settle down with Mayank in Chicago?

I haven't hidden anything from you either about my marriage. The day the proposal for my marriage came from Mayank's side, I informed you. In fact, you met Mayank also before the final decision was taken and you affirmed of Mayank. Now why all these questions? Mayank has never asked me to forego my friendship with you after marriage or whatever.

I really don't know Jai what to say about all these? But I am very hurt today, my best friend doesn't give too much credit either to me or our friendship. Please go downstairs Jai. And let me be alone for some time. I don't want to speak to you now.'

They suddenly heard a voice piping in from the terrace, it was Mayank

'Hey guys, where are you two? Aunty told me that you two were probably up here, with a new chapter of the Battle of Waterloo. So I thought I would check.'

Jai answered hurriedly 'Yes sure, we are really having some fun over here. Do come up Mayank. You can then hear your fianc's interesting discussion points'

As Mayank scrambled up the stairs, Bani shot a weltering look at Jai asking him to keep his mouth shut.

Mayank climbed onto the 'bench' and went and stood beside Bani, looping an arm casually around Bani's shoulder, and earning a piercing glance from Jai for that bit of action. Bani detached himself from Mayank casually and left the two guys standing there, with the rose shrubs – one of them admiring the roses, the other trying to do so but failing miserably. She found to her deep consternation that others were also coming up to the terrace and there was no way she could again excuse herself from everybody's presence. So she ambled along in the terrace.

Soon, the terrace was filled with joyous laughter and giggles of other people and Bani found herself drawn to these 'usual' discussions. She pushed the Jai-issue to the back of her mind and decided to concentrate on it later.

After a while, the maid came up with tea and Mr. Dixit asked Bani to call both Mayank and Jai from the 'bench'. Bani called them for a couple of times but she did not receive any response from them. She hurriedly climbed up the stairs and standing on the rungs, called out to both of them. Jai and Mayank were standing on the other side of the 'bench' so they hadn't heard her calling, in all probability.

Both of them hurried towards the stairs and as they approached they suddenly saw Bani's arms flailing wildly, Jai realized that she was standing on the loose rung which had suddenly given way. Both of them rushed towards the stair and extended their hand. A visibly shaken Bani tried to grasp Jai's hand and Jai winced as her finger nails dug on his skin. But the inertia of motion propelled Bani to keep on falling and after a split second, they heard a thud at the bottom of the stairs. Before anyone else could even acknowledge the event, Jai was down the stars in a flash and was beside Bani, holding her close to him. Bani had fainted straightaway.

Sangita,

Once again a very well written part.....awww she choose Jai's hand over Mayank's... good girl.... can't wait to see your two duffer's to see the light and acknowledge what they feel goes beyond friendship.......Why do I get the feeling that Mayank is not going to stand in the way of true love.... but the duffer's themselves are the biggest obstacles... 😉
