Nisha cuddled against Dadi on the large plush sofa…Mausi sitting beside her, her arms placed around Jigyasa, both beaming…Aditya leaning over slightly behind them, his usual boyish grin in place…Anu perched on the arm rest grinning, her hand entwined with Rohits…the three sons of the family lined across the back with their better halves – Pushkar grinning with Pia smiling flirtatiously at the camera, Abhay leaning against her shoulder, eyes half closed in sleep…Raashi and Ranveer on the far end, proud parents beaming as their daughter snuggles in to her Dad's chest…Sahil grinning, his arms snaked around Ranos waist, as she blushes, eyes downcast, while his chin sweeps against her right shoulder…In the middle of it all, Jai, dressed smartly in black, his eyes full of laughter, arm naughtily placed on her waist as he kisses her cheek…her own image, hands placed against his chest and mouth open wide in surprise, just as the camera had clicked, capturing the happiness of a family in a single photo, to admire and cherish, for years to come…
Bani gazed at the photo, her fingers sweeping delicately across the golden embossed frame, a silent drop of a warm salty liquid making its way down her face, the last remaining shred of the battle she had constantly fought inside of her for the past seven months…months that had seemed like seconds to her…
Brushing away her tears, Bani gently placed the large photo beside the vase, full of the fresh flowers that the nurse had placed there in the morning…her back aching, she shifted slightly in an attempt to get more comfortable on the plain white bed…in doing so, her hands brushed lightly against her stomach, causing her lips to curve in a refreshing smile as she softly caressed her swollen bump with her hands…
Sighing in content, Bani leant against the propped up pillow behind her and closed her eyes, the tiring pregnancy catching up with her, just as it did at the end of each day…with nothing to occupy her, Bani's mind slipped away in to his thoughts, relishing every second she had spent with him…
The times when he had kissed her passionately, or just held her close…the times when he had surprised her with romantic candlelight dinners…the times she had caught his intense gaze on her, even in a room full of people…the one occasion he had cooked for her and had ended up burning his finger, and much more in the process…the look in his eyes as he walked wordlessly around the nursery, a surprise gift from the family…the feel of his fingers as he snuggled up to her at night, softly caressing her stomach, as if stroking their Krishna to sleep…
Suddenly, an uneasy feeling jerked Bani out of her thoughts…clutching her stomach; she sat up straighter, her hands shaking slightly as she reached over for some water…
A second later, a loud crash reverberated around the empty room, carrying the sound of glass as it shattered in to tiny pieces on the hard floor…but it went unnoticed by Bani who was doubled up in pain, holding her abdomen, her teeth clenched, finding it hard to scream out…even the deep breaths she forced out of her mouth seemed to send a fire of pain all over body until she couldn't tell where it was hurting her the most…finally a scream ripped through her throat as her hands grasped a cold metal, holding on till her knuckles turned white…
Slipping in and out consciousness, Bani felt warm comforting hands grip her arms, slowly lifting her up before placing her on something soft…still writhing in pain, Bani forced herself to open her eyes, until the blurred vision came in to focus…standing beside her bed stood Natasha Malhotra, her friend, confidante and doctor for the past seven months…
N: Nurse!…get ready to move Bani, and make sure…
Natasha broke of as she felt fingers clasp her wrist…looking down her eyes fell on Bani who was struggling to keep her eyes open, one hand protectively clutching her stomach as her breathing came out in deep rasps…
B: Natasha…please…don't…don't tell Jai…
Natasha tore her gaze away from Bani's pale, pleading face…pushing her fingers through her silky brown hair, she gave a shaky sigh as Bani's clutch on her wrist tightened…
B: Natasha…promise me…
Natasha didn't reply, just nodded her head silently…one reassuring movement from Natasha was all it took for Bani to loosen her grip, a look of relief spreading across her face, even the pain seemed bearable…

A: Calm down Jai, or you'll make a hole in the floor!!
Jai stopped at looked at Aditya who was leaning against the wall, a cheery smile on his face…sighing, he ran his fingers through his hair before pushing his hands in to pockets and rocking slowly on his feet, the impatience clear on his face…a few seconds later, Jai was back to pacing the hospital corridor again, causing Aditya to shake his head amused, as Pia looked on, suppressing a smile…
Leaning back against the wall, she fiddled with her mobile in her hands, knowing fully well that there was no point putting it back in her purse as Raashi - stuck with the job of looking after the children back at home – would be ringing her again soon, as she had been doing every 10 minutes for the past three hours, even though Pia had already told her she would call if there was any news…
But Raashi hadn't been consoled by her reassurances, and as much as she hated to admit it to herself, neither was Pia…her own pregnancy had been full of last minute complications, making that agonising day 24 hours she would never forget…but the nurses running in and out, supporting grim expressions and refusing to answer any questions were enough to send anyone in to a panic…
P: What if...?!...No!!
Pia shook her head; not even wanting to think about it…everything was fine…there were just some small problems, nothing Natasha couldn't deal with…
Trying to divert her attention, Pia looked around at the rest of the family, scattered around the small waiting room directly opposite the OT…
Aditya had firmly taken Jai by the shoulders and sat him down on the bench, reassuring him that Bani would be fine and once a permanent alarm clock entered his life, Jai would be wishing he hadn't been so impatient…
Pushkar was twiddling his thumbs, glancing nervously around the white walls, which Pia knew he saw as a prison…he'd always hated hospitals, and ever since he had fainted while seeing Pia give birth, he had avoided them even more…
Anu was flicking through a magazine looking bored to the bone…like her mamaji, she had inherited the gift of impatience, and the wait was killing her…
Jigyasa, Mausi and Rano were huddled close together, talking in low whispers, not wanting to disturb the silence, which had fallen on the room…
Sahil and Ranveer were currently at the office…they had promised to wrap work up as fast as possible so that they could bring Raashi and Dadi to the hospital…
Rano seemed to notice her sisters gaze and walked over to her…she gave a warm smile and hugged Pia…
Rano: What's up?!
Pia was just about to reply when the doors of the OT burst open, revealing Natasha who was still dressed in her green surgical coat…she looked tired and was speaking quietly to a petite nurse behind her…seconds later she was surrounded by the family members, eagerly throwing questions her way, Jai being the most anxious of them all…
J: Natasha…
Natasha looked up at one of her best friends from college and gave a smile…she whispered something to the nurse who scurried back in the direction she had come from…less than a minute later she emerged carrying a small white bundle in her arms…everyone watched amazed as Natasha gently placed a sleeping baby in to Jais arms…
N: congratulations Jai…you're the father of a healthy baby girl!!
The sound that followed a stunned silence was deafening…Aditya and Pushkar congratulated Jai as Pia and Rano jumped up and down hugging each other, while Anu screamed in happiness and planted a big kiss on Jais cheek before taking her cousin in to her hands…
It was a surprise that the baby was still sound asleep, and stayed that way as everyone admired her tiny features, Anu and Rano getting in to a light banter on who she resembled the most, her mother, or her father…
Natasha looked at the heart-warming scene in front of her and couldn't help but grinning…finally, Jai tore his gaze away from his beautiful daughter and turned to face Natasha…
J: and Bani?
The smile slipped from her face and the uneasy glances she shot in Mausis direction were enough to tell Jai that something was wrong…
J: Natasha…what happened?!
Taking Jai's arm, she lightly pulled him away from the group showering their love on the newborn…
N: I'll tell you in my cabin…

N: Take a seat Jai…
Jai hesitantly sat down, but Natasha preferred to remain standing…leaving Jai in front of her desk, she walked over to the large window, glancing down at the busy Mumbai life below…for a few minutes there was silence, and when she finally spoke, Jai had to strain his ears to hear her…
N: There's been a lot of internal bleeding…she was physically to weak; even without the complications…there was nothing we could have done…
She stopped as she heard the chair being pushed across the floor, knowing even without turning around that Jai was on his feet…
J: Y…you said there were no problem with the pregnancy…
Natasha turned round and glanced at Jai…his face was unfathomable, but his eyes betrayed his emotions inside…she gave a small smile, not knowing how long it would be until she would burst in to tears, tears of guilt, sorrow and frustration…
N: I never said that Jai…lying to you, or anyone else for that matter was one thing I refused to do…I think the worry that I would tell you the truth was Bani's biggest concern…
Jais brow furrowed and a look of confusion momentarily crossed his face as he tried to make sense of what Natasha was telling him…
J: Bani knew?!
She nodded and leant slightly on the ledge, her voice a low whisper…
N: Two months in to her pregnancy…severe complications…we could have treated her Jai…she would have been fine perfectly fine…but she'd have to abort the baby first…
Knowing she'd hit a sensitive spot, Natasha glanced at Jai, noting his hard expression as he clutched the edge of the table, his face several shades paler…
J: Why didn't she?!
N: There was a chance she might not be able to conceive again…from everything to nothing?!…I don't think she could have done that, especially as she saw how happy you were…
J: How long until…
Jai couldn't face himself to say the words, but Natasha understood…
N: Not long…

One look at everyone outside Banis room, and Jai realised that they knew…he glanced at Mausi who was staring sorrowfully at the floor as Nisha silently cuddled up to her, silent as she realised that something was definitely wrong…
The door leading to Banis room opened and Pia stepped out followed by Pushkar who was cradling Abhay in his hands…without saying anything, she crossed over to where Rano was sobbing silently in to Sahils chest, and pulled her sister in to a hug, not allowing any tears to fall…
Aditya placed a comforting hand on Jai's shoulder and spoke in a low voice…
A: She wants to meet you Jai…
Jai simply nodded and walked silently up to the white door…hands shaking, he grasped the door handle and stepped inside, his eyes taking in the frail figure of Bani propped up against the pillows, gazing fondly at the small cradle placed by her side, where their Krishna was placed, sleeping peacefully…
She didn't acknowledge his presence until he was by her side, following the small smile that played on her lips…
B: She's beautiful…
J: She has her mothers' looks then…
Bani turned and looked at Jai who gazing at her intensely…in one quick movement he sat beside her and pulled her in to his arms, burying his face in to her hair, taking in her scent…
J: Why didn't you tell me?!
Closing her eyes, Bani wrapped her arms around him and placed her head on his chest, the soft beat of his heart comforting her…
B: You wanted the baby so bad…
He pulled away and looked in to her eyes, seeing the tears she was holding back…
J: Not more than you Bani…never more than you…
Smiling slightly, she raised her hand to his cheek and caressed it softly, as his eyes bore in to hers…slowly she swept away a tear which had found its way down his cheek…
J: Bani…I can't…
B: Jai…I'll always be with you…I promise…
He ran his fingers through his hair and pressed his forehead against hers, giving a sigh that shook his whole body…tilting her chin up, Jai slowly captured her lips with his, savouring them with one soft, slow movement as Bani's hands automatically reached for his face pulling him closer until they finally broke away….
Sighing in content, Bani nestled her head against his chest and closed her eyes as she felt his hands automatically caress her back soothingly…the last thing she remembered was Jai kissing her forehead before everything blacked out…

The fire had long died away, leaving only black ash, coloured with grey scattered across the ground…men brushed past, men dressed in white, each patting his shoulder in comfort, sharing their condolences, wishing him the best for the future, 'we know what you're going through'…he gave a bitter smile…how could anyone know what he was going through?
There were no tears…they had dried away when she had brushed them of his cheek…no…there was just emptiness…no physical bruises, but fresh wounds inside…he wondered if it was possible to lose a part of yourself to someone, to love them so much that life without them seems meaningless?!
As he stared alone, desolate at the place her body had been placed not long ago, Jai felt a warm hand on his shoulder…turning round he glanced at Pia who gave him a small smile…behind her stood Raashi, Rano, and finally Anu, cradling a small bundle wrapped in a blanket of lemon yellow…
Taking a step forward, Jai took his daughter from Anus hands, gazing at a pair of chocolate brown eyes that looked back at him, full of innocence….Rano had won after all, she resembled Bani the most, and was beautiful, just like her mother…
Jai…I'll always be with you…I promise…
He remembered her words…she'd always be with him, as Krishna-Bani Walia…

A love story very rarely has a happy ending…but in Jai's case, the ending of his love opened a new chapter in his life…
