PART 46

All alone in a corner towards the back of the hall Roshni flicks her fringe in her trademark irritating fashion and decides the time has come to make her move. Very soon everyone's happiness would seem like a distant memory…

A few days later things return to normal after the hustle-bustle of the godh bharai function. Anu-Rohit and Pia-Pushkar had gone back to their respective houses, Saahil and Rano had gone to Goa where their college had held a reunion party. Ranveer and Aditya had departed for a business conference in Nasik the day before, leaving just Dadi, Masi, Jigs and the proud parents-to-be alone in the house.

Jigs: Dadi, Massi aap abhi tak taiyyar nahi hui?

Jai: Kaha jaa rahe ho?

Jigs: Aapko bataaya to tha Jai bhaiyya! Main, Dadi aur Massi aaj raat Khuranaji ke beti ki wedding reception me jaa rahe hai!

Bani hopefully: Hum chale?!

Jai: Don't even think about it, tum kahin nahi jaa rahi ho!! You're already looking pale, tum aaj raat aaram karogi!

Bani's face falls and Jai feels bad. Jigs, Dadi and Massi leave to finish getting ready. Jai goes and sits next to Bani taking his hand in hers.

Jai: I'm sorry Bani, mujhe bas tumhaari fikar hoti hai!! Tum Tony se kehke jo bhi DVD mangvaana chahti ho mangvaalo, aaj raat hum dono baithke tumhaari choice ki picture dekhenge, popcorn ke saath ok?!

Bani smiles: Mujhe… Dil to Pagal Hai aur Lucky dekhni hai!!

Jai groaning: Oh noooo Bani… please yeh romantic bakwaas… not again!!

Bani: Aapne kaha tha meri choice hai!!

Jai gives in, shaking his head he returns to the study to carry on working. She sends Tony out with a list of the DVD's and snacks she wants. Jigs etc leave complaining about the sudden turn the weather has taken.

Bani gets up to shut the windows against the rain and thunder and hears the phone ring. A few minutes later Jai comes rushing out of the study putting on a jacket calling for the driver.

Bani: Kya hua, phone pe kaun tha?!

Jai: Bani abhi hospital se phone aaya hai. Jatin ko puri tarha hosh aagaya hai aur police uska bayaan le rahi hai. Maine usse phone pe baat ki usne mujhe urgently bulaaya hai apne attacker ke baare me kuch keh raha tha, main jaa raha hoon. Jigyaasa se kehdo voh mere aane se pehle ghar se bahar na jaaye… aur sab darvaaze andar se lock kardena – tum jao apne kamre me, aur mere aane tak neeche mat aana!

Bani doesn't tell him that they have already left, knowing that he would refuse to go anywhere leaving her alone in the house. He promises to call her regularly and goes, leaving Bani to sit and wait alone.

Jai rushes outside into the rain and takes the first car he sees without waiting to call one of the drivers. He impatiently fights the evening traffic, in his mind going back over his short conversation with Jatin on the telephone…

Jatin weakly: Jai… Jai tum sun rahe ho na…

Jai: Haan Jatin… lekin tum teekh toh ho na… doctor ne kaha tha tumhe urgently baat karni thi… tum kisi ki baat maante kyun nahi! Rest for now, hum kal tumse milne aajayenge!

Jatin: Jai meri baat suno! Kitna waqt hua hai mujhe coma se bahar aaye… agar mera bas chalta to me tumhe tabhi bataadeta… lekin yeh doctor-

Jai: Theekh hi to keh rahe hai voh… tum please ab aaram karo aur doctor sahab ko phone do mujhe unse bat karni hai-

Jatin: Tum dono ki jaan ko khatra hai goddamit!!!

Jai, slowly: …Wh… what?

Jatin, breathlessly: Tum aur Bani… Bani pe nazar rakhna… Roshni voh nahin jo tum samajh rahe ho… she used me… aur ab voh Bani ko… usne hi mujhe maarne ki koshish…Roshni…

Jai, urgently: Haan Jatin… bolo… Roshni kya…?!

Doctor: I'm sorry Mr Walia… maine Jatin se phone le liya hai… it's really not good for him to get so worked up, he is still quite weak!

Jai: Me abhi hospital aa raha hoon.

Doctor: Lekin Mr W-

Jai had slammed the phone down without waiting for him to finish. On hearing Jatin's broken sentences Jai's heart had started beating rapidly and his stomach had begun to churn…

He brakes harshly, narrowly avoiding crashing into the back of another car and horns impatiently. Swerving around the car he speeds up rushing towards the hospital as fast as possible.

He had always known that Roshni wasn't everything she appeared to be and from what Jatin had stammered on the phone he could make out that she was a real threat to Bani. He had to get the full story from Jatin before… before Roshni could put into practice whatever she was planning…

As Jai rushed to the hospital Bani tried to amuse herself by flicking through the TV channels.

Bani, mumbling to herself: Bakwaas movie… stupid drama serial… bakwaas movie… news… boring game show… oh cookery programme!!

She watched, fascinated as a young chef demonstrated how to make the perfect chicken pakore with a tasty twist! She made a mental note so she could make them for Jai when she was allowed back into the kitchen!

Even though she had been told to go back to her bedroom she stayed in the lounge downstairs. The fire was blazing... the phone was next to her and she could see the main door from here… she was too comfortable to move!!

She soon started drifting off to sleep in front of the television and jumped awake when the grandfather clock in the hall chimed loudly. Deciding to move up to her bedroom she starts to make her way upstairs when she hears a knock at the door.

What do you think guys? About the choice of DVD's - i'm a romantic at heart, i don't think mr. jai walia-business tycoon would be, do you? 😉
