PART 12

Jai stops, realising that the entire resaurant is full of people staring at them. Bani notices the same and her cheeks burn bright red. She runs outside, too embarrassed to take her eyes off the floor. Walking hastily onto the main road she is about to hail a cab when she feels a firm hand on her shoulder.

Jai: Bani…. Bani rukjao…

She turns, with tears in her eyes and looks up at him.

Bani: Kuch badla nahin na Mr Walia? Hamesha ki tarha apni ghalati manne ke bajai aapne mujhiko dosh diya?

Jai: Aisi baat nahin hai Bani, tum samajhti kyun nahin ho? I… I….

Bani: You what Mr Walia?!! God, kyu yaha aayi mein?!! I don't know what I was expecting!! Woh Pia ne sab….

She is getting more and more hyper with each word and is even more infuriated to see a slight smile playing on Jai's lips.

Bani: Aur ab meri feelings aap ko mazaak lag raha hai?!! What do you want-

He puts a hand on her mouth, the slight smirk now a full-fledged smile. All his doubts are now gone – he doesn't care how she reciprocates anymore, as long as he has told her how he feels he has nothing more to worry about. He stares into her eyes seeing surprise there at being quieted so… lovingly?!

Jai: Shutup Bani, just chup. Bahut ho chuka. Ab me jo kehne jaa raha hu, woh shaayad mujhe bahut pehle kehdena chaahiye tha. In dino jo kuch bhi hua usse mujhe sirk ek baat pata chali hai.

Jab Pia mujhe chod ke bhaag gayi thi to mujhe gussa hua tha – us baat pe ke koi mujhe dhoka de kar kaise jaa sakta hai?! Jab tum mere ghar se chali gaya, jab hame laga ke tum….

Bani tab mujhe ehsaas hua ke mere liye tumhari kya ehmiyat hai. Pata nahin kyun mujhe aisa laga jaise meri poori duniya bikhar chuki ho. Shaayad….. shaayad yahi to pyar hai…

Bani looks at him in amazement, she wants to answer him and tell him she feels the same way but the words won't come out! Jai's intense eyes are moist as he looks deep into hers…

Jai: Bani… mujhe ye to nahin pata ke is ehsaas ko me pyar kahu yah kya... lekin ye pata hai ke tumhaare bina sab kuch mujhe adhura lagta hai. Aisa lagta hai ke mera shareer yahi hai, lekin aatma kahin ghum ho gaya hai.

Me tumhaare liye koi faisla lena nahin chahta Bani. After what happened yesterday I decided I had to tell you how I felt - pata nahi zindagi me kal kya ho jaye.

Lekin Bani tumhaara jo bhi faisla ho uska me poori tarha se respect karoonga. I am not compelling you to do anything Bani. Bas itna yaad rakhna ke agar tumhaari taraf se na ho, to tum jo bhi karogi, jaha bhi jaogi, mujh me ek dost paogi. Hamaare beech pyaar ka na sahi, understanding ka to rishta rahega na?

Jab bhi tumhe meri zaroorat pade tab yaad karlena, mujhe ek pal me apne paas paogi…

I can't expect you to love me, but know that whenever you need me I will be here for you….

He pushes a stray hair back from her face and smiles at her, before turning to walk away……

Bani wants to stop him but is rooted to the ground. She wonders if she is awake or dreaming – did Mr Walia really just confess his feelings for her or was she hallucinating?!! No, this was true, it was actually happening! She felt like an immense burden had been lifted from her shoulders and she broke into a smile radiant as the sun. She runs after him and places a hand on his shoulder.

Bani: Mr Walia?!

Jai stops on hearing her voice, hoping with every fibre of his being that she is stopping him with a yes. He slowly turns and looks at her. She is smiling that inocent shy smile again, the one that knocks him for six everytime….

Bani asks quietly: Itni si baat kehne ke liye itni der lagaadi? Ab akele kaha chaldiye? Apne biwi ko saath nahin lejayenge?

She looks up into his eyes, tears sparkling in hers. The world seems to stand still as she laughs and he takes her into his arms. They hug each other tightly laughing through their own tears, finally blissfully at peace together. We hear the soft strains of the flute as their song plays in the background:

"Hothon se chunle kabhi… baat labo pe likhi

Mujhko baahon me bhar ke… mere dil me utar ke

Pyaar mera tu pehchaan hai…

Jiya dhadak dhadak… jiya dhadak dhadak…. Jiya dhadak dhadak jaye…

He pulls her away from him and kisses her forehead.

Jai: Ghar chalo Bani, tumhaari sahi jagaa mere paas hai, ab mujhi kabhi chod ke mat jaana….

Bani: Ab maut hi mujhe aap se alag karegi Mr Walia-

Jai: Jai

Bani: Kya?

Jai: Mr Walia nahin… Jai, sirf tumhaara Jai.

She smiles as he takes her hand and leads her towards his car. He is taking her home, where she belongs, by his side….. finally.
