PART 9

The door slams behind him as Jai exits his house and walks towards his car. He sits in his car and for the first time stops to process what just happened.

"Woh kal raat se hi mere ghar me he". Jai hears Pia's voice in his head and feels his heart race and his stomach turn.

"Nahi" he thinks "me bina uska chehra dekhe kuch nahin sochoonga. Mujhe pehle dekh to lene do, yeh sapna hai ya haqeeqat. Agar ye sapna nikla to mein apne dil ko sambhaal nahi paoonga. Ek baar dekh to loon usse, bas ek baar…."

He focuses ahead of him and races out onto the main road towards Pia's house.

He cannot concentrate on the road in front of him, all he sees is her beautiful face in his mind…. Her innocent eyes….. that flirtatious smile….

With a loud screech he pulls into the driveway of Pia and Pushkar's house, a place that he had once sworn he would destroy. Today all of that seemed useless and childish. Today all he wanted to know was if his prayers had been answered or if God was playing some cruel joke on him all over again.

He burst into the house calling her name.

J: Bani…… Bani….. Kahan ho tum?!!… BANI!!!!

He runs from room to room and saw no-one, the fear rising from the pit of his stomach threatening to suffocate him with each lengthning second of silence.

He comes back towards the main room and took one last look around hoping against all hope to see her innocent face smiling back at him, but there was nothing. "Pia ko mein choodunga nahin" he thinks and starts towards the door his face contorted with anger.

He reaches the door and is about to throw it open when he hears a noise to his right. The sound of a door closing and the faint "chan chan" of chudiya. He stands still, his eyes closed, turning slowly, wanting to but completely unable to trust his own ears.

He opens his eyes and there in front of him stands the woman who had haunted his consciousness relentlessly for the last 48 hours, the woman he had hated so passionately just a short while ago, the woman he was hopelessly in love with – Mrs Bani Walia.

He walked slowly towards her, not saying a word in case she evaporated in front of him like a dream. She looked tired, her eyes red from tears he didn't doubt that he had caused. She backed slowly away, looking at him with a mixture of fear and incredulity.

He stepped towards her, she inched backwards, he stepped towards her, she inched backwards, further and further until she felt herself hit the wall behind her, and she gasped in surprise.

He continued edging closer until she could feel his warm breath on her face and feel the heat radiating from his body.

He reaches up to touch her hair, trailing his fingers down to her pale cheek, caressing it softly as if afraid to touch her.

Bani: …..Mr Walia… aap….??

Jai's eyes clear as if suddenly awoken from a dream and he looks at her as if seeing her for the first time. She cannot say anything further, still shocked at seeing him there.

Jai: B…Bani…?

She blinks and his handsome face breaks into a smile as he takes her into his arms, hugging her with such ferocity, yet still she feels a tenderness in his touch.

Jai: Bani… Bani… tum hi ho na? Kaha chali gayi thi tum???!!! Tumhe pata bhi hai me kitna pareshaan tha!! I can't believe you……

He breaks away from her but continues to hold her tightly by the shoulders. The happiness on his face appears to have given way to a crazed anger.

Jai: WHERE THE HELL WERE YOU?! KAHA CHHOD KE CHALI GAYI THI MUJHE?? MEIN PAAGALON KI TARHA….. KYA KYA NAHIN CHAL RAHA THA MERE DIMAAGH ME?!! DO YOU REALISE I HAVE BEEN TO HELL AND BACK TODAY BECAUSE OF YOU?!?! I THOUGHT YOU WERE……..

Without realising he has been shouting at the poor girl who is still nonplussed as to why he has suddenly arrived here! He stops suddenly, becoming painfully aware of how close he is to her, how tightly he is holding her, how insane he must look to her!!

He backs away from her, stuttering…

Jai: My god… I'm sorry Bani… mujhe pata nahin kya hogaya… but… you… you have no idea how… tumhe maloom hi nahin hoga….

His face crumples and tears fall from his eyes. Bani is shocked at seeing him like this. The man who to her was like the epitome of stone and dispassion…. Crying like a child?? What could have happened to have affected him in this way??

She takes a few tentative steps forward, places a hand on his shoulder and looks at him with confusion.

Bani: Mr Walia…. Aap ki aankhon mein aansun? Aisa kya hogaya…..?

He takes one look into her eyes and pulls her into his arms, burying his face into her neck, allowing her silky black hair to cover his face, allowing her scent to pervade his every pore, wanting more and more proof that it was his Bani standing in front of him and not some hallucination.

Jai: Bani tumhe pata nahin mujh par kya beeti hai…. Tum kaha chali gayi thi Bani… Kyun mujhe chhod ke chali gayi thi?? Tumhe andaaza bhi hai ke mein kis aag se guzraa hu aaj? Agar tumhe kuch ho jaata to… kya hota mera… kaise jee pata me? ?

Every ounce of Bani's resilience washes away with her husband's tears, she puts her arms around him and tears fall from her eyes too. She doesn't know what has upset him so much but just seeing him so…. broken, so helpless, hurts more than any cruel remark he had ever made to her.

They stand entwined for what feels like an age, but still it wouldn't have been enough. Jai feels like he is finally home, as if he could spend his life in her arms and still it would pass by in an instant. He slowly breaks away from her, moving to look into her eyes, trying to tell her how much she means to him. She looks up at him, her heartbeat quickens and her cheeks flush as his intense gaze makes her feel like she is being bathed in lava. He lifts her chin up with his finger and looks deep into her eyes, moving closer to those red, quivering lips. She is so close and yet…..

BANG!!

They break apart as the door flies open and Bani hears Pia calling her name….
