As it is sharing the room was difficult specially with a man who was not only unknown but who was not too fond of her, he hated her presence but for the sake of his Masi he decided to bear with her, as soon as the door closed the mask vanished, he looked angry more with himself than with her. He virtually grabbed his nightsuit, went into the bathroom changed and came out and lay on his side turning his face away, she too did the same…they looked at their respective walls till sleep overtook their senses. As they say in hindi, ghee aur aag sath sath rahe toh pigalna shuru ho jaye now who was ghee and who was aag…..

They now knew some of their routines, he gets up once in the night and drinks water before getting back to bed, she likes to sleep on her right side, while he snores softly, she sleeps quietly, sometimes Jai feels he is alone in the room, till he sees the outline of her form on the floor….the arrangement was working fine till one day Masi walked into the bedroom …..

What is this, who sleeps here she asked seeing the bed which Bani had made for self…..for the first time they exchange glances in their bedroom, Jai stammers aah Masi it is like this….

I am having back pain so………Bani completed….

Yes she…I mean the doctor advised…he was a bad liar and even worse actor, he discovered that himself….

Is your back really bad, I did not notice you are having any problem throughout the day….Masi almost snapped

Yeah yeah I mean ….I did do a course of medicine and some exercise….

You mean you are much better now……

Bani swallowed looking at Jai for some help…..

Yes yes she is much better now…Jai concluded it for her…..

So Bani shift into the bed, you are newly married you should not be having separate beds, it is in this bedroom you get to know each other after all living in joint family has its minuses, except for bedroom you get very little privacy….

Bani was now profusely blushing, inspite of himself Jai watched her cheeks turn red…..

Bani somehow managed to raise her eyes and look towards him….

Ha Bani I have been telling you to call up the doctor to ask…..he suddenly started enjoying it

Areh baath baath me doctor ko kyu call karna hai specially if you are feeling well and want to sleep with your husband…..I think you better put the mattress back on the bed…..

Umm ..umm…Bani hesitated not sure of his reaction….

Mai help karu, he volunteered….

I can manage she squeaked ….

Areh Jai help karna, mil baath ke kaam karne se pyar barta hai…masi directed….standing with her hands on her hip to ensure they do it….

jiya Dhadak Dhadak jaye, jiya dhadak dhadak jaye…..

The worked silently making the bed…..avoiding to step onto each other but very much conscious of each other's presence, watching each other through hooded eyes…..

See it is so easy, Masi's words startled them…..

Ji, he ran his fingers through his hair, she opened the cupboard to take out his nightsuit, Mr Walia your change….

Areh bedroom me bhi Mr Walia…abhi toh Jai bulaya kar…..

Bani was now pink, her tongue frozen Jai could sense….

Aarree…Bani can I have the other night suit, the cotton one, keep this one for winters….

Ji…ji…ja…Jai…..

Goodnight bachcho sleep well Masi exited with a wink pulling the door shut…..

They stood staring at each other as Bani bowed her head and looked away, the spell was broken, Jai went into the bathroom to change…

As he lay on his side, he could feel Bani still sitting huddled in one corner of the bed, she was shy and uneasy, he was having a peculiar sensation….god what is wrong with me…I am a man of 40…he switched of his bed side lamp, the room plunged into darkness…

The fell asleep eventually, both of them uneasy and uncomfortable, tongue tied and not knowing from where to start, they knew the other was awake, they could hear each other's sighs and breath, they knew they were pretending to be asleep, finally the tension, the fatigue overtook their feelings and they fell asleep….

It is towards the morning, Jai felt his hand limp, he tried to move it, it felt heavy then a sensation hit him, he opened to see Bani was sleeping on it cozily, so close so near, for the first time since their marriage, for the first time he was seeing his wife so very near to him and for the first time he felt she was so very innocent….her eyes flickered, she tried to go back to her sleep but then she too must have felt something, she opened and looked into his eyes watching him…..she did not turn away, she did not believe he was so near and so close and looking at her without anger or hate..the time stopped for them……then the cuckoo clock announced the time, breaking the spell, she sat up with a start….

I am sorry …Mr ….

It's alright Bani, please do not apologize…suddenly he hated the word sorry….getting up, he picked up his watch, putting it on he noted the date, 19^th June…..

As he went towards the bathroom he watched her sitting through the corners of his eye….sitting with her head bowed trying not to stare at him….
