"Jai…" bani shouted…as she buttoned her blazer…it was cold…

"Coming…" she heard him, jai ran out of the cottage biding his father good bye… his bag flung across his shoulder…unknotted tie flying around his neck… struggling to button his coat…bani shook her head watching him, her hands resting on her hips…

"You will never learn…" bani accused him…jai gave her a sheepish look… running his fingers through his unsettled hair…

"It's all uncle's fault, he did everything for you and now you know nothing…" bani scolded him, knotting the tie…

"Hello, Miss. Princess…gopi masi does everything for you…" he said…

"Stand still…" bani said as she buttoned his blazer…and adjusted his tie…

"I don't get by blazer buttoned from her…" she defended…

"Ha!!Ha!!!" he mocked…

"Shut up…"

They sat on their respective cycles and went off to school…a car zoomed past them…

"Tiny Sahil going to school…" bani sang they both burst out laughing…as they pedaled…

Again nishikant was angry when bani refused to go to school unless she was bought a cycle to go with jai…she was so strong-headed to go with jai that she learnt cycling from him in just four days…

Bani hid her giggle…enjoying the scene unfolding in front of her…she sipped her chocolate milkshake…and eyed jai…who stood at a distance with his head hung low…

"I can't believe you jai…" uday shouted…

"Is this what I have taught you…?" uday threw his hands exasperated…here he always thought his son to be sweet like his mother, but he seemed to have taken on him, indulging in fights…

"Dad…it…" jai tried to defend himself…he didn't start the fight in school…

"Shut up…day by day you becoming undisciplined…fighting with boys…now if I ever get a complain about you…you know me????" uday warned…

"Sahab…what are you doing…jai baba…" gopi intervened, examining his crumpled blazer, the buttons were missing…his face bruised…pants covered with dust…

"You have only spoiled him…learn something from bani…" he scolded…

"I never fight uncle…" bani said making her most innocent face…

"I know beta…this jai…I don't want this to happen again…Am I clear!!!" uday reprimanded and huffed out…jai nodded his head like a dumb lamb…

Bani burst into peals of laughter as uday disappeared…gopi gave her a sharp look…examining his cuts…she applied the antiseptic over them…

"Ouch…" jai whimpered…as he felt the burning liquid over his wound…

"Theek hojayega beta…" gopi blew some air…soothing his pain…

"Someone wants to become a superhero…" bani commented…

"Shut up…dad ki chamchi…chugalkhor…" he screamed and went off to his room…

"Bani…kyun pareshaan karti hain usse…kitni chot lagi hain usse…dawa bhi nahin lagaya…" gopi said…bani looked hurt…she was just joking…

"Sorry…acha main lagati hoon…" bani took the ointment and cotton…from her hand…

Bani knocked again…but jai didn't' open the door…itna gussa…bani frowned… she smiled and ran up to the garden, plucking a white rose… she turned around and walked towards his bedroom window…bani stood on her toes and peeped inside…he had changed into a fresh dress and was doing his homework…

"Jai…sorry…" bani said sweetly…he pretended not to listen…

"Jai…" bani held out the single rose stem…jai looked at her angrily…but the moment he saw the rose bud, his heart melted…he got up and walked near her…

"Sorry…" bani said with wide eyes…looking like a lost puppy…jai took the rose…

"It's okay…" he grumbled…

"Smile…"

Jai broke into a smile…

"But I didn't start the fight…" he said clarifying…

"I know baba…now open the door…"

"Ahhh…" jai cried out as she spread the ointment on his elbow…

"Bas hogaya…" bani put the cotton over it…

"Thanks…" he said, resting his hand…

"Shut up…if you fight again…see what I will do…" bani said angrily…as she got up to put away the medicines…he grinned…

"Where is bani…" nishikant enquired…seating himself…the dinner was served…

"Must with that jai…god what does she find in those low-class people…" kumud whined…nishikant shook his head…

"Good evening papa…" bani came in jumping…

"Good evening my princess…" nishikant smiled…bani placed him a sloppy kiss on his cheek…and took the seat next to him, her usual…

"Hey sahil…" bani said…sahil looked at his mother briefly…before replying a dull hai…

"Why are you late…" nishikant questioned…

"Jai was hurt…I was putting medicine…" she said as she folded her palms and closed her eyes doing a prayer…nishikant looked on fondly… kiran always prayed before the meals… bani was turning just like her…a tear formed in his eyes…

"I don't know why you allow bani to roam around with that jai…" kumud complained…as she prepared to sleep…

"What happened kumud…?" nishikant said bored…

"Bani should know that we belong to a different class…see one day she will marry that good for nothing…and bring him home…"

"She is just a kid kumud…"

"Whatever nishikant…it doesn't take much time for girls to grow up…why don't you talk to her…"

"Why don't you talk to her…?"

"Has she ever listened to me…" kumud glared at him…

"You never tried to become her mother…"

"You are blaming me nishikant, for you your daughter is gold, it is me and my son who are bad…"

"Where did sahil come from…?"

"She is always doing gopi masi or jai…is there anybody else for her…"

"Gopi masi has raised her and jai is her best friend…"

"So, she never treated me as a mother, why should I accept her…" kumud said frustrated…

"Leave it kumud, sleep…"

Kumud turned to her back and closed her eyes muttering something to herself…

She had never genuinely tried to come close to bani, somehow she couldn't… bani reminded her of Kiran whom nishikant still loved…she knew every night nishikant left the room to go into his study, talking to kiran's portrait…it burned her…it was always bani this, bani that…and not her son…even though bani had a soft corner for sahil she never allowed sahil to get close to her and behave brotherly…but jai…her instinct told that their friendship will metamorphose into something else once they both enter their youth… what if jai married bani, nishikant will oblige bani's every whish, and that stupid jai will own all this property… she even dreaded that day in thoughts… …

"Jai…walk fast…" bani laughed as they paced up with the running toy train…it was Sunday and as routine they were out… getting rid of studies…

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is lovingly called the "Toy Train". The Toy Train ride is a romantic approach to the Himalayas, a mysterious region. The landscape can only be described as spectacular and the views of the Himalayan peaks breathtaking. The Darjeeling Toy Train is one of the most famous narrow (2 feet) gauge train running from Siliguri to Darjeeling. It was constructed during the British Raj, during the 2nd world war; it served the British war effort by transporting personnel and supplies to the various camps of the area…The unique feature of the trains is that they are still hauled by steam locomotives, although a diesel engine has been included in recent times for mail delivery… it is still the old-fashioned train, with carriages…

Bani and jai caught up with the approaching train…in the plains, the train got slow as slow that we could walk along with it…it was entering Darjeeling… … bani climbed on the to the empty carriage…

"Hey…" jai shouted…climbing it…they both looked out, drinking in the scenic beauty…almost breathless… …

"Let's go…" bani jumped down…they came back to the plains before the train halted at at a distance… …

"Huh…" jai and bani ran…

"I won…" bani said triumphantly…jai smiled…he always let her win…

"I am hungry…" he said…

"Momo…" they both said simultaneously as they went to their favorite eating joint…it was popular food in Darjeeling, a steamed dumpling containing meat and vegetables cooked in a doughy wrapping and served with watery soup…
