Hey guys,

Just got back yesterday from my overdue holidays, had a great time, but missed IF terribly. I am back!!!

As you all know about my infamous fascination with Shakespeare, so I am adapting his play "Cymbeline", not a popular one though. Comedy, history, tragedy, sonnets, poetry, it's an ocean; it seems I have only known a few drops? I have not read the actual one, but I am attempting it just going by the summary and the little bit of research I did. I think it is better not to read the original because I won't just lift things then, I will apply my brain to think. Though I am writing it in a completely different way, in my own style?

I was just sick of writing about Mumbai or any other metropolitan city, so this story is based in Darjeeling?Well, I had been there when I was very small, probably in fourth standard, and had recently got specs, I do remember it vaguely, the tea-gardens specially and the traditional dress I wore. I was seeing the pictures to recollect so that I would be able to write more nicely, I looked so stupid with my 2 front molars showing off. He!!!He!!!! A very beautiful place, apart from being romantic it has something very mysterious about itself, maybe because of its history and the fear it has seen (Insurgency, Nepalese movements etc..)

Note: The time period is late 1980s (1988-1989), since I am writing from jai and bani's childhood?it will be 2008-2009 once they grow up?

Hope you enjoy it!!!!

The Fires of Spring... ...

Part -1

On a quiet day, he could hear her breathing?he stepped down the train?the crisp fresh air of Darjeeling invigorated his senses?it seemed only yesterday she was by his side?only yesterday he had met her?only yesterday ?but time was fast?almost half a year had flown by since she left him, his wife, his beloved wife who he knew was watching him from somewhere above, turned into a star, guiding him in the darkest times?he stood at the railway station? getting down the luggage from the compartment?

"Dad?" a boy called out?

"Yes, son?" he turned his attention to the little boy seated on the suitcase, stifling a wide yawn?showing a few missing teeth?it had been a long journey?tiring?

"I am feeling sleepy?" the boy rubbed his eyes with closed fists; he was lanky and tall for his age?a typical trait inherited from his father?

He ruffled his hair? the boy looked angry?

"Dad?why do you do this?" the boy exclaimed examining his messed up hair, he hated it when anyone touched his hair?he ran his fingers through the thick crop, adjusting them as they were earlier.

"Common lets go?" he said holding the suitcase, the bag flung across his back?the boy held a water bottle, sipping a few drops?

Uday Walia was a widower, losing his wife Krishna in a terrible accident, it was a love marriage, he had seen Krishna in a friend's marriage and he fell in love with her soft, innocent looks, he had courted her since then, but their respective parents didn't agree as they belonged to different castes?but they had bravely eloped and got married? They had moved to another city, where uday got a decent job , uday was a very efficient worker, well acknowledged about his subject and with Krishna's constant support, he soon earned well and they settled into a comfortable living. Soon they were blessed with a son, the symbol of their eternal love?it was the happiest day of their lives?Jai had been his lucky mascot; he was promoted to a better position and they were happy and content with in their small little world in Mt. Abu when everything came to a standstill?Krishna while coming back from the town met with an accident due to a fatal landslide?jai was six years old?uday was very excited that day since his boss, Nishikant Dixit wanted him to assist, impressed by his hard-work and dedication and had called him to Darjeeling?but he just blankly stared at her corpse when he returned home...uday couldn't cope up with the irrecoverable loss, he decided to take up Nishikant's offer and leave for Darjeeling?he could no longer live in this place which had taken away his love?and he had to now live for their son, the only living memory of his wife? settling everything he set out for an alien land?

A journey awaited him? ?
++++++
"Jai?get up?" uday shouted?Nishikant was kind enough to give them a small cottage, it was of colonial style, as accommodation which was situated behind his house?amidst a beautiful garden?Krishna loved gardening?he sighed deeply?unpacking the few things he got?he took out Krishna's photo frame and placed it on the coffee table?he looked at her smiling face affectionately?when jai walked in?

"Dad?" he called out?uday looked at him?he looked adorable in those sky blue pajamas?even though he resembled him in appearance but his eyes were Krishna's, kind and generous?

Uday picked up jai?

"How did you like your new house??" he asked?jai looked around for a second?

"Nice?but our house was nicer?" he said honestly?uday smiled?jai gazed at his father?

"You miss maa?" he said innocently?uday nodded his head over-whelmed?

"Me too?" jai buried his face in his chest?and wrapped his arms around his neck?

"Now common, there are so many plants here, water them?" uday cajoled him?

Jai looked towards the veranda?they were lined with flower pots?

"Maa's favorite?white roses?" jai pointed out?

"Hmm?" jai jumped down?taking a mug, filling it water he started watering the plants?uday adjusted other things?the house was too spacious for the two of them?
++++++
Jai poured water into the flower pot, the white roses were in full bloom?smiling at him?when he suddenly felt something moving?he looked up to see a small little girl peeping at him from a distance...jai waved his hand, indicating her to come near him?she walked towards him looking at him curiously, swaying her pigtails?

"Who al you??" the little girl asked in a toothy voice?

"Jai?" jai replied?the little girl?looked at the roses wistfully?

"You want it?" jai asked, bending down?the girl simply nodded her head, her pigtails swinging?jai careful plucked one white rose, he took out the thorns and handed it to her?

"Thankuuu?" the little girl's chocolate brown eyes glowed with happiness?

"What is your name?" he asked sweetly?

"Baaniii?" the little girl said stressing every word and ran off? ?
++++++
"Jai?" uday called out?jai left his coloring pencil and went to him?

"Yes dad?" he said?

"I am going to meet my boss?that house?" uday showed him the imposing mansion standing at a distance?

"Okay?"

"Don't go anywhere?I will come back?"

"Okay?" jai went back to his previous place, picking up the color pencil he started filling the empty spaces? ?

Uday walked out, carrying some files?

Gosh, you are a Shakespeare -fan? Never knew that😉 I like the story. Jai as a little boy and Bani a little girl with no teeth😆. I will be waiting to read how they grow up.

Darjeeling sounds beautiful. I only know the Darjeeling tea which is one of my favorites. ( I am a tea fanatic).

Thanks guys… it's so good to be back. My head was swarming with ideas and I wasn't able to write them down. But I enjoyed the time, read three books. Ranju, good to hear from you, you keep on vanishing dear, read the part of Bahut Kathin hain, loved it!! Update soon or else…

Cymbeline is not a great story though, after a lot of introspection and researching I have concluded that there is a similar plot or a similar twist in Shakespeare's all stories. He did raise different issues but the underlying plot is somehow not new. So after a point of time you feel all are same, probably I think I am retreating from my Shakespeare obsession, I am glad I am, but the man Shakespeare will continue to intrigue me always.

I fear that I will lose my versatility or will be closed in a box writing the same thing, the same feel; it's just a trivial mind-block. It may be just a writer's delusion.

ENJOY!!!!

Part -2

Uday Walia stood hesitantly at the opening of the door…it was cold and dark inside…with only a dull dusty light emitting from the huge standing lamp…which looked antique…

"May I come in sir…?"Uday asked for permission…

"Oh!! Come in Mr. Walia…" a friendly yet firm voice came from inside…

Uday went inside; adjusting his eyes to the dimness… …he saw a man slumped in the leather chair across the mahogany desk…every part of the room oozed power and a kind of command one couldn't help but succumb to…

"Sit…" came the voice again…

"Thank you for the house sir, it's really nice…" uday said… pulling out the chair…

"That's okay…" a slight cough interrupted his flow of dialogue… …

"You may be wondering why I suddenly shifted base from Mumbai to here, so far…" nishikant said…

"Err…"

"After losing my wife to a disease I didn't feel like living there anymore…and my asthma has also worsened, the doctor's advised me to keep away from pollution and all…Mr. Walia, I chose you to be associate because I believe you are a very efficient worker, very competent and trustworthy, for so many years you have worked for me and I have never got the slightest of complain against you…and I wanted someone I could trust blindly…who better than you…"

"I am really grateful that you trust me so much…I promise you sir I won't let you down…"

"You will handle all my business affairs, so…"

They were engrossed in deep discussion when a voice disturbed them…

"Papa…papa…" bani came barging into her father's study… nishikant's face lit up…

"Ha…my princess…" nishikant hugged her, making her sit on his lap…she was so much like his wife, almost her carbon copy… probably she would grow up to become like her, just like her…

"Uday, she is my daughter, bani…bani say hello to uncle…" nishikant said…

"Helluu…" bani said playing with the rose petals…

"Hello beta, she is very cute…" uday couldn't help but remark; she was such an adorable little angle…

"Papa, see I got rose…" bani showed off…

"Wow…who gave you…?" nishikant softly…all the firmness which was intact a few minutes ago seemed to vanish away…bani thought for a second and said…

"Jaiii…"

"Who jai…?" nishikant looked puzzled…

"Oh!! Must be my son…" uday said…

"Your son nice, have you got him admitted in the school…"

"No sir, I will be talking to the principal today…"

"Please…go…you can start work form tomorrow…"

"Thank you sir…I will take your leave…"

"Okay…"

Uday got up and left, pulling the door, he couldn't help but smile at the way he was interacting with bani…on his way out he came across two women…one was sitting on the sofa, she looked heavily pregnant, knitting a sweater…while the other one, quite older was seated on the floor, massaging the pregnant woman's feet… nishikant was a widower, then…he shrugged and left…
++++++
Nishikant Dixit was one of the most powerful and well to do industrialists during the time. India was going through a new phase of building a strong economy and Nishikant was one of the few such self-made entrepreneurs of that time. He was mainly into construction business but was no venturing into other areas and trying for international exposure… He resided in Mumbai with his small, nuclear family, his wife Kiran and newly born daughter bani…Kiran and nishikant had a traditional arranged marriage, belonging to a customary royal heritage of Rajasthan…but soon they fell love with each other, kiran's extremely caring and loving nature attracted him while his simplicity was something kiran admired, he often joked that kiran had an obsessive compulsive disorder to care of everybody…they were happy in their small little world but the only sad part was a lack of a child…though nishikant wasn't that bothered about it but it was getting hard on kiran, she was slowly slipping into depression, they went to all possible doctors, they said she was fine and young but why she couldn't conceive nobody could figure out, they did charity, religious rituals what not, but there weren't blessed with a child even after ten long years of their marriage… it was coincidence or epiphany that Kiran finally conceived, that was the ultimate moment for them, soon bani came into their world, she became the apple of their eyes…the work load increased and nishikant worked round the clock to meet the deadlines…kiran had suddenly become strange after being discharged from the hospital, she got irritated at the smallest of things and shockingly she remained aloof from bani…not even bothered when she wailed incessantly…nishikant's mother who had come to visit them was upset with her daughter-in-law's behavior that she had to call a baby sitter from her village to take of bani…by now everyone believed kiran had gone insane, nishikant tried to cut down his work and concentrate on kiran, but she was no longer the same kiran whom he fell in love with…nobody could figure out that it wasn't some ghost which had possessed her but she was a sorry victim suffering from postnatal depression… one day when nishikant returned home, the house was eerily silent, kiran was in deep sleep…she never got up again…

God bless
