Part 1:
(Place in story - the point where Bani has made Tanu and Aahna get out through the backdoor of their house under the pretext that the moneylenders who loaned their parents money are at the front door.)
Tanu and Aahna step out of their house in a daze. They have no clue what hit them - they are stunned! They walk in silence to their car which is parked by a nearby mechanic shop and sit in. Tanu fumbles in her bag for the car keys. Aahna turns around and says "Di we are going to train station. If we take our car there then who will get it back here?"
Tanu stops digging through her purse and sighs deeply, " Aahna we have no luggage and we are travelling to Mumbai - does it make any sense to you?" "Well, Di - nothing makes sense to me anymore. This morning we were by the funeral pyre of our parents and this evening we are driven out of our house!" Aahna answered with a sob in her voice. They sat in silence in their car bravely trying to control their sobs. Slowly, they got off the car and headed to the mechanic shop owner.
"Bhaiyya" Tanu addressed him "will your assistant drive us to the train station, please? He can drive us in our car and bring the keys back to you for safe keeping. We are going to Mumbai". "Mumbai" the owner echoed in shock and looked up at them. When he saw their sad faces, he hesitated, then said "Sisterji, my assistant has gone to the train station to pick up his relatives. Once he gets back, I will ask him to drive you - is that OK? Are you in a hurry to leave?"
Tanu assured him that they could wait, as there was good 4 hours before its departure time. The owner took them inside his shop and got them tea and snacks. The food reminded Tanu and Aahna that they had not eaten since the day before. They slowly drank their tea and relaxed in the solitude, and soon dozed off. In half-an-hour they were awakened by the owner - the assistant had returned. "Sisterji, all trains are indefinitely delayed. A train has derailed, that is, run off the tracks - all trains to and from Patiala have been suspended". Tanu and Aahna thanked him - walked to their car and sat in it.
"Well Di, I am hungry. I do not want to go back home and have a run-in with Chachi. Please, can we go somewhere quiet and eat?" Tanu nodded - she too did not want to face Chachi, she started the car and drove it slowly through the busy streets.
"The storm that had been predicted - has come" Aahna said as she glanced at the big fat drops of rain. Tanu did not hear her, she was lost in her own thoughts. She drove the car aimlessly through the streets, the rain had got heavier, heavy winds whipped the car, and visibility was very poor. "Di, we need to stop and wait the storm out" said Aahna. Tanu, turned the car down a dark alley way saying -"The Kali mandir is right down the street, let us go there and take shelter". They had hardly gone ahead by 400 feet when another car turned the corner and came straight at them. "Wham" and then the tinkling sound of broken glass. Two airbags popped out and their persistent sound filled the air. Both Tanu and Aahna felt a monster force gripping their chest. Shattered glass fell all over them and blood oozed from their bodies. They did not feel anything, they were numb, both of them were unconscious.
