I must say, I agree with your irritation about the Arjun/Uruvi angle...it was adorable initially but now, it's becoming a chore to watch! I accept this show as fanfiction and well-executed fanfiction at that, but certain things should be sacred. There's absolutely no need for any kind of love triangle in this show!

Thank you so much ! 😳
I've a pet peeve for love triangles , they irritate me to no end . It's almost like love itself is not enough , jealousy and insecurity are must needed elements to fan the passion and intensify the feelings. 😕 Now we see a jealous Arjun, who'll just become more and more jealous once he starts to realize Uruvi's growing attraction and obsession with Karn, and also when Karn will fall for Uruvi , of course he'll also be jealous , insecure and possessive of the whole Uruvi-Arjun closeness ( honestly, which spouse won't ?? 🤔 ) and it'll be super messy. Can we not have a clean love story for once ??

Agreed also about your observation re. Kunti glorification...I'd really rather see Karna with his family. Can we have a single show which actually fills in the gap, instead of retelling the same old tale over and over again?

Totally agree.
I'm glad that they included the Parshuram training , curse , Rangbhumi part and also Kunti's back story with Karn , but let's keep it at that . If we want to see Mahabharat once again, we can simply go and watch BRC Mahabharat or SP MB . 😉 I for once , am immensely enjoying the new twists and turns that are new , fresh yet keeping with the time line and Mahabharat main events in mind. Things like Bhanumati's swayambhar that we've read in MB but never got to see in MB , I'm glad we're getting a chance to see them.

Finally, it's a genuinely entertaining show...I have not been bored once in the first week and that's the best thing a show can do...especially given the climate of Indian televison lately!

Can you imagine I'm watching each episode thrice back to back and still not bored ?? 😲👏 Good content always has great repeat value. 😳

Regarding acting,

Kinshuk is simply charming as Arjun...I am not sure if he's quite the epic-mythical Arjun but he is doing a great job with his character in this! Tejaswi is charming and beautiful to watch! Even when she is angry, she doesn't come off as abrasive...I like that in her acting! Aashim...well...I have a slightly different opinion. I actually like Aashim from DSJZ and his Yeh Hai Aashiqui appearance (which you must watch if you want to know his strength as an actor)! I do feel he is having difficulty with this character..there are some moments where he has been really good...especially the surya namaskar scene...and in the scene last night where he tries to look at the jewel in the portrait...and some other scenes I am forgetting! But he is still a touch too stoic and stiff for now...I like his voice and expressive eyes...I also favor his mournful expression (I think it goes with this characterization of Karna) but the body language is unconvincing! But it's a very new show, a very difficult character so I believe we have to give him some time and hope for the best!

I have to say I love the characterization of Karna in this...It's easily my favorite form of Karna so far...I hope they don't whitewash or darkwash him further!

I'm loving the characterization of all the three main leads , they're keeping them delightfully human , allowing Arjun to be angry , bitter, playful , Possessive etc. , allowing Duryadhan to be ambitious and manipulative while still being nice and respectful towards Kunti ( I hated SP MB calling Kunti a characterless woman within 5 minutes of his entry , it showed clearly where his character arc will go . ) and genuine with Karn , without losing his swag and sass, allowing Karn to be sad and angry , bitter and calm , relaxed yet purposeful , shy yet confident , ambitious yet benevolent all the same time.
Finally , thank heavens for not making Uruvi a Mahaan Mary Sue character or annoying preachy at least till now. She's a delight to watch , with her sweetness , her firmness , how cheeky she can be occasionally and thanks to the angels in heavens for showing her as a girl with normal hormone levels and not a frigid stuck up ice statue. 😉

Btw a small and insignificant correction, that quote "Gods envy us" is from Troy, the film. Not from Homer's Iliad.
Oh okay thank you. 😳

My comments on your Episode 1 post.

Gargi my dear,

I am sorry to be so late with this, but I plan to comment on all four at a stretch, winding uo tonight! I have been at the hospital half the day, and I am worn out and need a change badly. And how better to get than by diving into your episode analyses!

First of all, I can fully understand how hard it must be for you to do these posts at all, and then respond to the comments, when you have such a punishing work schedule. When I was doing my overlong Jodha Akbar posts, and responding to 15 pages or more of comments on each in a huge forum, I was not working any more, though I had my mother, a cardiac patient, to look after, and I did not have RA. You are at work all day and more, and of course there are things to life besides the IF or even Karna!

So, my suggestion, for what it is worth, is that you follow the pattern I used for Mahakumbh, and do weekly posts on Sundays. Even if someone else - not I! - starts doing daily analyses, it won't matter. You can bring your special touch and your special insights to the weekly post. My Mahakumbh posts, as you can check out for yourself, were very successful, though there were two others in that decent sized forum doing brief daily takes.

Now that the main characters in this show have been established and discussed threadbare, they need not be analysed individually any more (of course except for fangirling over this Karna!😉 You will only have to concentrate on the happenings, and how they affect the dramatis personae, and then pick one trend for the week and discuss that.

Think about it and you might just agree with me.

My comments are, as usual, in blue italics.

"All that is gold does not glitter
Not all those who wander are lost;"

- LOTR , Return of the King

How wonderful that you are a fellow LOTR aficionada! 🤗Let me complete that quartet:

The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

Tolkien wrote that for Aragorn, but you could apply these lovely, deep lines just as well for Karna.

: The birth - One is utmost coveted since birth, her very arrival being harbinger of celebrations across the kingdom, her parents proud and fawning upon her.
Another discarded as soon as he comes to Earth , his entire journey of life, his fate writ with hardship . An infant left to float away in a river . Uncertainty being his first welcome gift . One got blessing , another got doom.

The strange prophecy : Leads ka janam ho , aur prophecy na ho aisa kabhi ho sakta hai 😉 😆 ! So yes , there is one here too , one that is very interesting. Our destiny is not some thing set in stone , it is actually a mix of probabilities and choice and at the end of the day our choices make or break our lives.

Uruvi had two options offered by life, one that leads to a lifetime of certainty , luxury , security and all the jazz that royals used to enjoy, one that is literally carpeted with flowers , but as fate would have it , she'll opt out of the easy one and choose the man who's got blood dripping from his palm lines and walk the path of fire alongside him.

Very beautiful lines. Loved them.

His parents , like all normal parents , anxious to ensure the happiness and prosperity of their daughter , promised to get her addicted to life's beautiful choice so that it makes her innately programmed to brush aside any hard choice, steer clear away from the doomed choice that life will one day unfailingly present in front of her.

But her parents were wrong in one major aspect. Happiness and prosperity are two different things . Heart can not be contained or tamed . It's like a compass will always point towards the perilous path and Karn , the ever enigmatic one , will embody that challenge that she seeks from life , the unique , the enigma, the human firefly that she will chase in the garden of life.

I loved the "human firefly" simile, but I don't get the part in bold. You are here talking about the generality of womankind, not Uruvi alone. So why should their hearts always point towards the perilous path?

Even Uruvi's does not point towards danger and difficulty. It points towards Karna, and it is his life that makes her path a thorny one to tread.

Disappointed that they didn't show even a glimpse of Karn's foster parents and siblings. But I'm glad that they took the sidhi baat no bakwas route and have him landed at the doorstep of Parshuram , where from he emerged as the strapping stallion, standing tall and brave , like a mountain against the odd , for the odds will be plenty in his life. He's like the rock between a rock and a hard place.

Karn's childhood efforts to learn Dhanurvidya and the rejection he faced was very painful to watch. Inspite of being a conservative Bramhin girl , it made me literally mad at the caste system's injustice.

Yes, it was very crude and it rubbed one raw. They want to make Karna's rejection , and his consequent festering bitterness, as deep and as poisonous as they can.

But there is another angle too, which they could just as well have taken. Dronacharya is engaged to teach the 105 Kuru princes, and no one else. He gets permission from Bhishma to add his own son, Ashwattama, but no more. This being so, he could not have taken on Karna in any case.

As a result when Karn grew up, he's stoic , almost frozen . It's like he's hardened with hardship and struggles to an extent that he's built blocks around him , or brick walls to safe guard his gentler feelings , his softer emotions . His face betray nothing. To show emotions is to hand over ammo to the enemy who can then use it against him and humiliate or hurt him further. He speaks rarely , wears the mask of frigid don't-give-a-damn attitude all the time , without letting it slip, but his eyes betray his emotions. They're fraught with distress and guilt whenever his Guru calls him a Bramhin .

There was also this faint smirk and satisfaction to achieve his target when he struck the target and passed the tests. One step closer to achieving what he wants.

But mostly he's rigid like the shaft of an arrow and his eyes are like flints , hard with determination and concentration. Forged in the fire of societal discrimination and a growing ambition as strong as the growing realization that his life will not be easy.

It was painful how dejected and helpless he looked when his Guru Parshuram , who was so affectionate towards him, lashed out that famous curse . He simply looked tired , so tired of a life where he'll always have to face one hurdle after another.

Aashim was superlative when he was standing at the mountain top in the next scene , in isolation with an uninviting , foreboding sky flashing thunder from above , and his eyes filled with so much pain that it's completely heart breaking as he looked above to beseech divine justice .

Compare it with the scene where he was welcoming the rising Sun with open arms , did he look truly young , his masks slipped, warmly relaxed, enjoying himself, with a calm content smile adorning his noble face and suffusing his cells.

(His mountain climbing reminding me strongly of Mahendra Bahubali doing it as Shiva in Baahubali 1😉. )

I agree with all of this, though I do not share your overwhelming admiration for this Karna. As for Mahendra Bahubali, I grant you the parallel, but if I am not wrong, he climbs that CGI rock in the midst of cascading water. These chaps have skipped that element!

As for the curse, in typical TV serial style, Karna is not able to complete his sentence and tell his guru that he is a sootputra. That might have calmed Parasurama's anger to some extent, for now he takes him to be a Kshatriya, a race he detests.

Uruvi : She's quite a contemporary thinker , ahead of her time in her fair non judgemental nature. She's got an argumentive streak that is not irritating but endearing becoz of her gentle and calm way of putting her opinion across. Fond of the warm sunrays. Interesting.

So she is not afraid of getting tanned. 😉

She's grown up in utmost luxury and pampering and is the apple of the eyes to her family and friend's circle. A girl born and brought up in adoration and admiration for her beauty, skills and spunk. She's used to it. Confident that her eyes are capable of bewitching others.

It'll be interesting to see her strive for Karn's affection for the first time in her life. Be unsure for once of the reciprocation of her feelings. To earn it by effort , rather than having it served in a platter.

Yes, and that is the leit motif that the CVs will milk for all they are worth! The Great Seduction Game.

It is also obvious that as a friend Arjun is very important in her life , and the inevitable change of equations and dynamics after her marriage with Karn will pain them both , may be for different reasons , but both surely.

I hope their friendship survives . It is a beautiful one . But the tender affection in Arjun's eyes when her hair was flying behind her as she's rapt in attention in the thick of the race and the gentle hope blooming there both when she chose him for her chariot rider and held his arms voluntary , after refusing to take it previously, makes me think otherwise. Uruvi can give up her life for Arjun but she can not share it with him .

Beautiful summing up! I don't think their mitrata will survive the shock fo Uruvi falling for Karna. See, she is far too open and demonstrative when it comes to Arjun, and so in a way she unintentionally leads him on. The hurt of a blunt rejection will be very hard for Arjun to take, and his love for her will turn sour.At least I think so, and then this will at least spare you the detested triangle!😆

I found her frustration at Arjun building a bridge for her uncalled for. I understand her hurt. But it was a natural friendly protective gesture , little to do with doubting her charioting skills. Not every thing has to be a game of one up manship.

Agree in toto.

Nice touch that Uruvi missed that it was Karn's arrow that broke the bridge . The way Arjun's face became cloudy with confusion and disbelief , it was so subtle that you won't notice it unless you're staring unblinkingly at his face.
Only when they were across the chasm, did he fully realize that another equally swift archer is nearby and we can see traces of anger.

Very well observed.

The chariot race was random but very enjoyable as it the interwoven narrative between Karn's tests and Uruvi's competition gave a trailer of sort how they will compliment each other and how they'll balance out together finding a middle ground . The parallels were effective yet not too forced. It was pretty smooth.

There are quite a few very nice dialogs in the 1st episode itself . Whoever is handling the dialog dpt. deserves a pat in the back for the good job .

I found Duryadhan a pretty normal guy with just a bit of extra jerkiness towards Uruvi , but then none looked too fond of each other so it's just making ground for future angst with the whole Uruvi-Karn vs. Karn_Duryadhan angle.

I like this Duryodhana very much. But I saw from the sole review of Karnsangini that I came across that the critic was regretting the absence of a Puneet Issar/Arpit Ranka type snarling bully. One never knows what people will like!
Uruvi and Bhishma back and forth exchange was cute and funny . 😆 Makes me wonder at how many relationships will be fractured after she will choose and claim her mate.

Kunti nurtured a hopeful wish to make Uruvi her daughter in law , little did she knew when she was voicing out that wish fate was smiling a twisted smile and said , ok granted !

Right then her eldest son entered the 'stage' where in the next episode an event will unfold that will play crucial role in twisting the fate of each and every one , Karn, Arjun, Uruvi , Duryadhan and Kunti.

The first episode itself covered a lot of ground . I'm not complaining . It makes for an intense watching .
Your two bits ???

Well, that was much more than two bits, right?

My comments on your Episode 2 post.

Gargi my dear,

Being probably terminally out of date, I have no idea who Ashe Vernon is. Nor am I sure why he is calling a human being insurmountable. So I shall skip that.

The rest of my comments are, as usual, in blue italics.

Don't you dare, for one minute, believe that my kindness makes me anything but insurmountable. I did not unzip my chest to every kind of hurt, and stagger back, wounded and alive, just to hear you call me weak for trying. | Ashe Vernon

The best of luck wish : Episode starts with Arjun getting ready for the competition that will decide the fate of Hashtinapur's throne and in glided Uruvi with her usual friendly leg pulling . There isn't much to take away from the scene, except that Arjun is clearly hoping to finally win Uruvi's heart and make a place in her life as some thing more than her best friend. He's not even hiding it any more behind friend tag .

I'm glad that he reminded Uruvi he's confident not vain ; just like Uruvi . And he's right to be confident , he knows he's matchless among his brothers and cousins.

It was interesting how Uruvi is not exactly reluctant or uncomfortable , though she's carefully avoiding reciprocation , when faced with Arjun's interest in her, she was indeed praying for his win and I can not blame a young lady if so, since Arjun is not just the prince of a powerful kingdom , he's also regarded as highly eligible because of his archery skills and gentlemanly nature. Plus , he's interested in her , which always stacks the odds in favor of a person , such is the case with human beings.
What I liked best is Uruvi's - "Subh ho, mangal ho.. " She didn't said may you win or any thing such. She need not.

Let us be frank about it, and skip all these fine distinctions between love and affection for a moment. The fact of the matter is that if any girl behaves with a man the way Uruvi does with Arjun, the man would be naturally encouraged to look for more, ie an open acknowledgement of love.

I cannot imagine any girl of her age, in those times, carrying on the way she does with Arjun, calling it mitrata, and having it accepted as such, and not objected to, by all those around her, and her family in the first place. They might all assume that the pair would end up getting married, but even so, her parents at least would be more cautious about her reputation, especially if the marriage did not materialise for whatever reason.

Women might have had a more free existence then, protected by the male maryada, but even that would have its limits. If this marriage did not materialise, other royal families would hardly have looked indulgently of their prospective bahu gallivanting all over the countryside with her mitra.

This scene made me thoughtful as to what'd have happened if Karna hadn't entered her and Arjun's life at this juncture , when the relationships were still brewing in the tender state of tremulous courtship and no official tag attached to it of yet. Uruvi would've probably got married to Arjun indeed . " Ab to mitrata se bad ke rishte ban ne hai.. " As of now, none of the parties were making the match official probably because Yudishthir , Duryadhan and Bhim were still unmarried , and Arjun's turn could only come later. The kind of allowance her parents and Arjun's family both were giving to the "friends" U-A , were enough hint that there was no whiff of doubt in anyone's mind including that of Uruvi's that she would end up with Arjun only and that was probably fine by her too, since not every one gets married to the love of their lives. Some times people go for their best friends , which though does not offer the thrill and passion of love turned into wedlock still makes the journey through life very smooth and easy as friends understand each other. Had Arjun got a chance to ask for her hands in marriage , she'd have said yes to her friend , had she not already fallen for the Angaraaj. Some times we don't really know what we want from life till we're actually presented with it. There's a difference between what we want and what we cannot do without.

Very nice, my pet, and this kind of crisp obiter dictum is something I have grown to expect from you.

This apart, it is not just that not everyone gets married to the love of their lives. It is rather that most folks don't have a love of their life, and are perfectly content to settle down in staid, comfortable domesticity. There were, after all, much worse things that could happen to a girl.

If Uruvi had not met Karna, she would never have learnt what love and passion are like, and she would have been happy with Arjun. Of course the bulk of her life would have been anything but smooth as Arjun's wife either, seeing all that happened to the Pandavas. She would probably have been parked, like Subhadra, in her maayka.

The Rangabhumi drama :
Poor Duryadhan's face fell away almost comically when the stadium erupted to cheer Arjun .
Why did Uruvi walked in with Arjun inside the arena , being a princess ?? It looked decidedly odd.

Not odd so much as hinting at a closeness in their relationship that was really not there on her side. This is what I mean by her unconsciously leading him on.

But the conversation they'd during the armlet gifting , is quite telling of the future , as many have already pointed out the jemstone is a symbol which stands for Uruvi's heart . She was asking Arjun, if he could take care of it and Arjun had reassured her no body coould even touch it . Fate watched on and smirked . When she was looking at Arjun ,light reflected from Karn's divya kavach and fell on her eyes and she was instantly distracted . An indication that Karn's shine his entry in her life will take her away from Arjun. Also , as her eyes were again searching the crowd for the source of the dazzle , she couldn't find him . May be another indication that she'll have much difficulty in finding Karn's heart , or rather thaw his frozen heart and capture it .
(Fan girl moment : How gorgeous did our Hero looked , brooding in the crowd. Aashim's eyes are some thing else ☢️ ! )

Here we go again!😆

As the competition started and fiercely progressed , Arjun established excellence easily and unchallenged . Must say, once again, very very impressed by Kingshuk. From his body language to the resident little smile twinkling in his eyes as he shot arrow after arrow at Duryadhan, to the utter composed voice and eyes while asking Duryadhan to brace his defeat , he was simply a pleasure to watch. His friend also looked mightly excited at this point.

Karn looked on unperturbed . He , till then , had no role to play in the political drama of Hastinapur royals therefore emotional attachment to the same . He's here to take part by hook or crook and show the world his mettle and his face looked unperturbed as that of a bystander or neutral audience , with a little scowl when Arjun's name was being cheered on after his arrows shot the target with mathematical accuracy. He only looked curious when Duryadhan openly challenged Drona's hasty declaration of Arjun as "sarvashreth" .

As the one-on-one between Arjun-Duryadhan started , Karn was finally hooked to the match. It was as if he noticed Duryadhan properly for the 1st time since the start of the match. His smirk , when Arjuna shot the 1st arrow near Dury's feet , gave away that he already knew what Arjun is up to , just like one great archer already knows the tricks of another.

I must say , Duryadhan is of the kind who'd rather break than brace his defeat . Call it his virtue or vice , it makes him who he was, his defining trait. Even when reduced to the state of porcupine he was struggling to free himself with black fury on his face , yet not ready to accept abject defeat , when Karn freed him with one swift shot.

Arjun immediately recognized the archer as the same one from the previous encounter. Like I said , one great archer recognizes the tricks of others . As he turned to see Karn , he met his life time nemesis for the 1st time , same as Uruvi's eyes fell on her human firefly . She looked on intrigued as he somersaulted inside the arena , revealing his chiseled face and lean bow like body in a breath taking shot .

By now the air was thick with rising tension and hostility between Karn-Arjun . As Arjun walked ahead to meet Karn half way followed by the rest , Shakuni exchanged a meaningful glance with Dury . A good trickster never misses a golden opportunity to turn the tides in his favour.

As Karn faced intense and hostile interrogation from a visibly angry Drona , he fought the volley of bullets charged at him with words and questions that had always made elitists ill at ease and always will , till the end of time . His words were no less piercing than the deadliest of arrows , since they were laced with the key element that rings - truth ! Aashim was excellent in this scene. It was good to see how unfazed Karn was all through out this question session with the required amount of courage and strength of character . He knew what he's going to face and he was mentally ready . What is the point of being agitated and angry when the same can be used against you immediately when you show them you're affected by this kind of attacks ??

The lines they had given him for this segment were excellent.

By now Uruvi's intrigue has thickened into frank interest , Her inherent sense of justice makes her support his points and she's impressed at the guts of this stranger who dared to enter a competition specifically held for the royals.

My comments on your Episode 3 post.

Well, child, I am very tired by now, but I shall try and finish this one and leave only Episode 4 to be done at night, for I don't know how I shall be feeling tomorrow.

Comments, as usual in blue italics.

Shyamala Aunty

: Episode 3 :

"It is a lonely feeling when someone you care about becomes a stranger. | Lemony Snicket, When Did You See Her Last?"

Well, I have some vague notion of who Lemony Snicket is, but I can't place this quotation. Nonetheless, line 1 is beautiful, in fact heart-rending.

The previous episode's Rangbhumi drama continues :

I was clapping in glee when Drona and Arjun's face fell as Karn spoke of his Guru , even Bhishma was startled and I was chortling in glee as he called Drona as Gurubhai . Drona's furious face was worthy of a codac moment .

So was I! He put Dronacharya down savagely and effortlessly. Still, I was surprised that all of them, including Dronacharya, instantly accepted that Karna was a shishya of Parasurama just on his say so, though he was a complete stranger.

As Karn insisted on his participation amongst further opposition and steady refusal by Drona , Arjun finally found his lost voice and showed eagerness to gave this impertinent new fellah a lesson . He's aware that the passings on is being watched by not just the Hashtinapur , but also his lady love.

But new characters jumped in the drama , Adhirath and Radha with their own son Shon , as Adhirath tried to dissuade Karn from participating , Radha was emotional at the reunion with her beloved son after 12 years and Karn's stoic manner dissolved as he took in the display of open heartfelt love and happiness of Radha ma as she fondly caressed his face and his eyes softened , as if hard ice melting into water.

Beautiful!

Uruvi was puzzled at the continued refusal towards Karn's participation as she couldn't gauze the fear that was in Drona's heart that if Karn indeed take part after all , he may actually be proven to be , at least Arjun's equal , which Drona could never allow or never even risk, the same fear that made him took away Eklavya's archery skills to uproot the rivalry of a better archer .

Yes, that is exactly what it is. Drona can gauge Karna's quality as an archer at the first glance, and he is (rightly) afraid for his favourite pupil.

Radheya the virtuous :

As Shon tried to persuade his brother's case , revealing that he's an adopted child and not a true born Sutaputra ,so he may quite possibly be a Khshtriya for all they know, Karn showed us one of his very many great qualities , for which his name was , is and always will be taken with revenrance and attach it to everlasting glory - his acknowledgement of his adopted parents Adhirath and Radha , and his upbringing among Sutas. And this always remained the same , no matter what transpired in between . He remained proud , respectful and grateful towards his foster family . We can simply read the conversation between him and Lord Krishna when Krishna invited him to discard the Kaurava's side and join his brothers , to see that clearly.

As he puts a full stop to his brother's words with a booming angry " Shon".. and continued with..

" Mein wo nehi jo samaj mein apne pratishtha banane ke liye apne palanharo ko jhutla du..
Mein wo nehi jo apne pehechhan kisi aise pita , ya aisi ma se jodu jinhone janam dete hi mujhe tyag diya ho..
Mein Radheputra tha , hu aur agar meri janani aj meri samne akar bhi khadi ho jaye to bhi mein Radheya hi rahunga .. "

Yes, this is the core and essence of Karna's character. Loyalty, affection, and gratitude, and this no matter who the other party was.

As his parents and brother rightfully swelled with pride and happiness , Kunti's face crumbled with misery. Uruvi's reproach towards the real mother of Karn , which she thought aloud, didn't help it any.

Aashim was simply superb in this scene , couldn't clap hard enough for how well he delivered in this scene , his voice , his eyes every thing just added to the gravitas of the scene , full marks with bonus points to him.

If you could, you would give him 200%!😉 But even I agree that he was very good here.

Sangini in the making :

Uruvi's argument with her father and Pitamaha Bhishma , once again showed us why she's deserving of the title Karnsangini . She's genuinely possessed of clear thinking that rises above any kind of bias ingrained in the system and her clarity of thoughts telling her this major point that by suppressing the challenge they're just throwing Arjun in a bad light , making him look like he's incapable of taking Karn in a one-on-one , which is not just unfair to Karn but Arjun ever more so. After all you can not be best without besting others fair and square. Suppressing Karn's participation will open the can of worms of doubts in people's mind that may be after all Arjun was not the best and Uruvi did not want this to happen with her friend.

There are two separate plus points in Uruvi's character, as revealed here, and you have touched on both. She is veery smart, and can see where Drona's bull headed attempt to protect Arjun will actually end up hurting his reputation. Then, her mind and her heart are both in the right place as regards the principle that all men are born equal and should have equal rights to attempt to excel. The latter was extraordinary for her times.

I'm glad that Karn proceeded to leave the arena when instructed to do so by his father , for he's a good son and he could not just stand there and watch his parents being dragged by Drona and co. But he didn't do so before openly taunting Drona and Arjuna some . By this time Dury-Shakuni pairing , who couldn't likely believe their luck at this unexpected pleasant turn of events for them 😉, are gleeful and sold !😛

Start of a lifetime alliance:

And while basking in this good luck , Dury made a check in the chess board , and made Karn his battle mate , his friend. I am extremely happy with how humble and genuinely nice and gracious he was , while doing so , not a shred of arrogance and simply giving it as a prize of Karn's valor and hims saving Duryadhan from Arjun's cage of arrows , also offering his friendship as a gift . Really glad that till now CVs are keeping Duryadhan pretty human and normal.

I wonder if he was just being nice and gracious towards Karna, or he was shrewdly, as Kunti surmises, locking up a very valuable asset for the future. If the former, this Duryodhana would be both impulsive and a tad naive. If the latter, he would be far shrewder than he is usually shown as.

Both Gandhari and Dhritrastra looked on pleased with his decision to befriend Karn. Gandhari was actually swelling with pride when Duryadhan offered to be Karn's Charioteer, once again making it clear how solid this friendhship and mutual trust is going to be , lasting till death , deeper than any that he'll share with even his brothers.

Uruvi was agitated at the birth of this alliance , as she's wary of Duryadhan and the possible outcome of this friendship , but could she not see that Duryadhan was the only one who stood for him and by him against the attacks of the society ?? Without him doing so , Karn would've no chance to show the world what he's capable of.

No, for right now she is totally in Arjun's camp, and she knows how Duryodhana feels towards Arjun. So any accretion of strength to Duryodhana's camp would, she would conclude, harm Arjun. It is a zero sum game. As she is not besotted with Karna at this stage, it is only her deep concern for Arjun that would dominate her thoughts.

Doe caught in the Sunlight :

As the face off between Arjun-Karn kick started , Karn had his eyes fixed on Arjun , while Uruvi's was held in a gaze upon Karn. As Arjun's first arrow struck Karn's chest mid center and dissolved in a sunny glow of the divine kavach , Uruvi literally saw Karn for the first time in a new light , saw him properly for who he truly is - Sunlight made into flesh . She's spell bound , her eyes couldn't look away any more than she could control the new emotions that took birth right at that moment . She looked on mesmerized , the whole face off thing completely forgotten , she's in a new world with little care to her surroundings ( chariot was probably running on autopilot mode !😆 ) and came back to earth 😆 from her visit to Suryalok 😆with a shock when Karn's arrow made a near contact with her pretty face . She looked angry , anger at her own self , for this moment of weakness and distraction.

Perfect take on this segment. Actually it is Uruvi's fault as Arjun's charioteer that the gemstone is damaged. If she had been alert, she would have swerved, and the arrow would have missed Arjun's arm.

As fate would have it , the precious armlet got broken by Karn's arrow with both Arjun and Uruvi staring open mouthed. Of course , Karn had no idea what it meant for Arjun or what is stands for Uruvi .😉 Some times we become embroiled in the cooking of destiny with little knowledge of it in the beginning.😉

The red headed league is hereby dissolved ! :

Aha, a fellow Holmesian addict, I see! Lovely!

Both Kunti and Bhishma jumped in to brake and break the battle , for battle is what it was . No exhibition of talent . Both the ziddi valiant warriors were out for blood only. So they had to stopped in short order 😆 and sent home summarily, but the enmity that started only intensified due to lack of conclusion.

It would have been just as bad if there had been a conclusion.

The sky is overcast with green clouds of jealousy ! :
Arjun is in a state of angry and pained turmoil , since he couldn't keep the vachan he'd given to his heart's dear. Uruvi made it worse by accidentally and absent mindedly praising Karn in front of him , which flared the already ready base of jealousy and hurt and sense of betrayal in his eyes and voice . " Kahi mere mitra ne ye to nehi man liya.. ... " Oh wait Arjun , you don't know yet ki usne kya kay man liya !

Yes, and Uruvi is disastrously frank to begin with, and then incapable of mending the damage she had done. She simply stares blankly at Arjun, though it is not as though someone as smart as she is would not have anticipated her best friend's hurt reaction. Bad direction.

My comments on your Episode 4 post.

Here goes, Gargi. It is nearly 11 pm, so I doubt if I will be able to finish No.5 as well, but let me see.

As I tried to impress on your obstinate persona,😉 DON'T try and respond to any of these posts till later in the week. And don't post any more episode analyses till you are sure you can do it without dropping in your tracks.

Beautiful! As for chale gaye, I don't know, par nazar to jhuke hi the, poor chap!😆

The controversial raktvachan ! :

Adhirath and Radha are worried for Karn , where as his brother is excited with the newly unfolded events ! Adhirath wants Karn to return with them , when Duryadhan entered , looking content like the proverbial cat who ate the cannery and licking lips , and promptly put a stop to any such propositions . Our Kannery , I mean Karn was so touched with Dury's concern towards his wounds that his eyes were wet while he strives to express how grateful and indebted he felt . While that pleases n convinces Dury , Shakuni is not near readiness to accept Karn's words for word value.

A great dialog by Dury here , " While one can break even a given promise , a honorable person keeps even his casually spoken words. " Hat's off to the dialog writer. 👏We need a dialog corner, seriously . 😳

Karn of course , completely ready to prove his loyalty and devotion , immediately agreed . It was enough for him that Duryadhan thought that there's no need for such an oath , Karn's words alone were enough ! Since he's NEVER going to sway from his loyalty towards Dury in any case , what could be his reason to disagree or disapproave ?? If it can assuage any doubt in Shakuni's mind, so be it. He wanted to put to rest any such question mark about this sacred friendship , that he always held more binding than any other human bond or relationship , once and for all.

We all know this scene was included only to provide a cope out for Kunti ,to "save" her from speaking the truth, an intregral part of her white washing and nothing else. 🤢 As it is , I still fail to understand why couldn't she reveal the truth to Karn or her other sons , and why that'd become his " Mrityu ka karan.. " Kuch bhi ainvey ! 😕

Because she assumes that once he knows his parentage, and that the Pandavas are his blood brothers, he will feel obliged to join them. Seeing the kind of relationshio between them and Duryodhana, this would mean his abandoning Duryodhana.

This is turn would be a direct violation of his rakht vachan, the text of which is so tight that it leaves no loopholes at all. It is the sort of treaty I would have been pleased to have drafted when I was in the diplomatic service!

Ergo, Karna would die on the spot. incinerated, as he states in his oath, by Agnidev.

This Duryadhan I must say is a thorough gentleman . How courtaseous and proper he is in addressing Mata Kunti.

I too noted that and was very pleased with it, much as I am pleased with this Duryodhana as a whole. It is the best characterisation of his that I have seen on TV so far.

The first Karn-Kunti scene was a heartbreaking one and a beautiful one at that . I might have even enjoyed it , had Kunti been any less of a disgusting character. But then she is indeed as insufferable as she is , so I will skip this scene almost in entirity .

I don't have any of this anti-Kunti mental block, so I liked that whole scene a lot.

Kunti is trapped by her own childish folly, and then by fate. Having foolishly tried out the mantra (here she is shown as egged on by her friend, later Uruvi's mother, if I was not mistaken), she is stuck with a baby. I really fail to see what else she could have done.

Acknowledging the baby as hers, and claiming that it was the son of Suryadev, would have only invited u niversal derision. No one would have believed her. Everyone would have assumed that it was the offspring of an illegitimate affair, and her parents, actually her adoptive parents, would have become a laughing stock in the whole of Bharatvarsh.

It would have taken an enormous amount of guts, and total disregard of the reputation of her parents, for her to take the revelation route. She has neither.

Uruvi wonders about the kind of mother who could abandon her child, and perhaps, if she was in the same situation, Uruvi would have come clean and the consequences be damned. She is a very strong minded and wilful girl.

Kunti is not. But she should not be damned for that for all time to come. In those times, it would be a very rare female who could stand the public humiliation for her parents and herself that revealing the truth would have called forth.

Just would like to mention how sportingly and graciously Karn admitted to his rival being a top notch warrior ( while Arjun had earlier failed to do the same in front of Uruvi, though I kind of understand . Uruvi washerself being tactless . ) and a mother shouldn't be dragged between the battle of warriors. He had no idea that Kunti is also his mother , but he extended the same respect towards her as he would've had he known the truth. Yet he didn't forget to remind her that fate owe them another chance to duel it out.

He respects all mothers, his or anyone else's. Those are his sanskars. Period.

Uruvi lost :
Literally lost in deep thought , while the maids tended to her and of course, as part of their job , gossiping of the startling events of the "pratispardha" . Before her story with Karn starts , it's preview was being written in her heart in invisible ink of fate . She couldn't understand how could some one break the gemstone so easily ?? Was then it's specialities as told were just an exaggeration ?? But her friends would have none of it . They've only one purpose in life and that is to fan the flame of restless spark of attraction in her heart , till it becomes a blazing fire. Poor Uruvi could only hide her growing confusion with annoyance, while the gushing by the unsuspecting Jaya Vijaya was doing a good job of thorough covering the important topics , from his lashing-like-thunder archery , to his piercing eyes , to his curly hair , to his mysterious personality , to his divya magical kavach and Kundal! 😉

Not surprizing though . Karn was a great favorite among ladies . It was said when he'd rise from the river after taking daily bath , ladies of Hashthinapur would flock around to get a glimpse of him. So of course "Sundar, Man mohak" Karn became the immediate subject of frezy discusssion in the interior of the houses and palaces by the resident ladies , as he took on his new role in the political circle of the kingdom.

Some one drag Uruvi back to Earth and tie her to a post 😉 , because once again her heart is soaring towards the Suryalok as she revisited her first glimpse of Karn. 😉As we see him through her eyes , we soar with her in same blissful euphoria.

Well, I don't, but then I am not your age!😉

Arjun-Kunti conversation :
Nothing much to add . One of the scenes which you , no not skip , but just watch , nod and move on from. Arjun was ofcourse seething with anger at the slight he faced from Karn , and the sting of his words of challenge was fresh in his mind. But what left a wound deeper than his arrows in his arms , was the broken armlet , his broken promise , with Uruvi herself being present there to witness it happen. He's eager to return the debt of wound with proper interest and Kunti is shaking in her sandals as the prospect of forever enmity looms large over her two sons.

Unknown driving force :
Uruvi ready to use the readymade excuse to have a meeting with Karn , couldn't wait till it's proper daylight . Off she goes to heal the wounds of her heart , towards the man who is the root cause of it . Dard bhi wo, dawa bhi wo ! 😉
But really for a palace which holds so many of young princes and their friends and guests as Hashthinapur , it's jarring how a stunningly beautiful young maiden princess walks about chaperone-less. 😆 But it's not against the fact .😳During those days, women did enjoy exactly this kind of freedom of movement and meetings , though after marriage there were just a little more restrictions. Because ye un dino ki baat hai jab maryada was every thing in the lives of even common people . Maryada was what guarding the virtues of women , and that sense of honor during any such opposite gender interaction were their chaperones.

All very nice, but there were limits to this sort of freedom, and I have never read of any heroine of that age barging into a young man's rooms without being announced, and that too very early in the morning. It would have been completely contrary to feminine maryada.

The fact of the matter is that this Uruvi is being shown as a 21st century girl pitchforked into an ancient era. This applies as much to this sudden descent on Karna as to her overt display of closeness to Arjun. It is all very well to cite Lord Krishna, but such behaviour was unlikely to have been appreciated in those days.

Any case , she was stopped short by the guards , because Karn was busy in praying and Uruvi was mad at Karn , completely devoid of any reason or logic . It should have dawned upon her in a flash that Karn is not even aware of her coming to visit him ; it's just a general instruction being followed . But Uruvi was neither in that kind of head space or heartspace to take these facts into consideration, she was childishly petulant and insistent . Used to having her way , it made her even more determined to not wait and after quelling any resistence with a authorative glare of her eyes , she went on ...and landed on a very wet and bare torso Karn. What a lucky stroke of luck !

Ensnare the senses :
While the semi transparent red veils keeping Karn out of her vision flew back to reveal a very , pardon my words , delicious male back , the kind that drives the inside of a woman's lower midriff in a knot 😉 , and Uruvi walked in a reverie and had an eyeful . Karn looking his beautiful best with his face washed in sunlight , while he stands mid bath in a gesture of prayer. She did not look away till she got her heart's fill and when she did finally turn , blushing , her face was glowing with the softest smile . Uruvi to gayi !😆

The hurt pride :
She was still lost in that after glow when Karn came out fully dressed . There was a fleeting moment of unfathomable thought passing across his face as he looked down as if he needed a moment of preparation before facing her . But when he called out , Uruvi was as if glued to the ground , she was a breathless mess of fluttering heart beats , racing pulse and flaming cheeks . She needed much more than one moment to get it together and face him and instantly was lost again in a trance 😆after seeing him standing there in flesh. By that time, Karn has refined his tactic strategy and landed on the most defensive one of averting the eyes all the time with voice carefully kept impeccably polite and face down or looking away. 😆

Pissed off Uruvi real good 😉. She came back from lala land , landed with a thud and totally mad at not being recognized by Karn . Even as she gave her own introduction with a lot of uncustomary attitude , Karn simply regarded her with polite disinterest 😆 and asked her reason for this unexpected visit. Uruvi took the chance to admonish him for his folly in destroying the armlet , whereas 1. Karn had no idea that it could mean any thing of significance to any one , let alone to Uruvi. 2. Even if he had , he's totally allowed to strike his enemy anywhere above the waist as Arjun was doing the same. It's not like he singled it out ! 😆

BUt of course any intelligent man is aware of the great piece of wisdom that one should never dispute with a woman , that too when she's young, that too when she's beautiful , that too when she's a princess and especially when the man is so inept and shy at dealing with ladies as our Karn is ! 😉

Delightful description of the whole scene. The whole point of the script seems to be to show that once a woman falls in love, she abandons both logic and commonsense!😆 Not very flattering towards women, come to think of it.

: Episode 5 :
"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equals than others . "- George Orwell , Animal Farm

The stop watch :
As the last scene of episode 4 rolled into episode 5 , Uruvi gave Karn a fixed date to fetch a similar jem for her and Karn readily agreed . Any one have any idea how the hell he was planning to get one ?? Me neither ! All the ways that I could think of are time taking , and being Angaraj, Karn now had plenty of resources but not time . But looks like fate was indeed meherban upon him this time around. It literally jumped the address on a piece of paper on his lap.
Duryadhan in the mean time , of course tried to dissuade him from committing any such promise but Karn explained he couldn't refuse any one any thing they ask for after his daily Surya puja in the morning.
( I was basically lost at the puppy eyes Karn gave Uruvi as he fixed his unwavering gaze upon her , I couldn't remember seeing his face this soft with any one other than when thanked Duryadhan earlier.😳 )

Growing green :
Arjun is flabbergasted at the news of Uruvi' visit to Karn . Though her friends tried to cover it up to the best of their capabilities by assuring that she went only to vent out her anger , Arjun wouldn't have it . Whether anger or hurt , that was supposed of his too ! ( Kingshuk was amazing👏 ! Did I mention that before ?? Oh I did . He's really good at emotional scenes . Emotions are his strong point. )
Her friends gave him away the whereabouts of the twin stone , which made him cheerful and hopeful once more . I think there's some niggling sixth sense telling him that time is ticking away and he needed to hurry up to secure the girl once and for all and Arjun left after promising Uruvi that he'll soon come to Pukheya ( for Uruvi's hand ) , Uruvi looked pretty clueless ( she's pretty thick here I must say , any girl with half of normal womanly instinct can immediately tell if a guy is as besotted with her as our Arjun is. And she calls Jaya Vijaya stupid 😆)

Tu Dhoop ki sandesh sa..bheegi bheegi ek bhor mein... :
Another moment of butterflies in the stomach and breathless high for our Uruvi who noticed her Yodhha in the garden , with Dury who else , and she couldn't take her eyes off .

Near collision :
A brief moment of altercation in the corridors ( corridors of palaces are made for collision or bickering or eavesdropping and such.. ) between the brothers .They almost passed each other with out a word with total lack any social addressing and I was like , phew ! Close save ! But then Arjun, freshly nursing his hurt regarding Uruvi giving Karn a morning visit , could not keep away from a cutting quip and got an earful from Karn . Aashim was amazing seriously ! The controlled anger , the carefully added disdain dripping from his lashing words , the right amount of arrogance in his tall imposing frame - not to be analyzed but to be watched , on a loop . The rivalry between the ace warriors is gaining momentum and looking out for an opening to burst.

I play with my tressure trove of memories :
Alone in the privacy of her bedroom , with nothing to put a lease on her haywire heart , Uruvi was.. what else but.. lost in Karn's thoughts . It's almost like a child with her toy box , the child picks up a toy , plays with it some , then puts it back in the box, takes another , caresses it a little , puts it back and so on she plays..
It's almost like she's trying to capture the memories by living them again and again and again and still not getting enough. She even nodded with a trace of smile when her friends barged in unceremoniously into her chamber and asked her if she's thinking of Karn ,😆 before of course realizing her folly and immediately negating with a vehemant protest , accompanied by a doubt on the existence of brain inside the allotted box in her friends ( I can't say I don't have that doubt too ! )😉

Choose your team wisely : As Jaya Vijaya were choosing and picking teams on match who-can-get-the-twin-jem-faster , ultimately going with team Arjun since he's the safer bet as he already knew where exactly to look for the stone and Karn didn't ( or so they thought ) , Uruvi of course found out that the twin of this stone is in Kalinga with her friend Bhanumati , whose invitation she had earlier decided to skip in fear of getting ruthlessly teased for not yet losing her maidenhood , promptly changed her decision and made up her mind to attend the occasion so that she can get another opportunity to bump into Karn and witness him doing her errands . How delighted she was at the prospect of it , 😉nothing could stop her now. One go getter this girl is . Knows her mind and goes towards it unhesitatingly unapologetically.😎

Ek teer se do nishane :
As Karn found out the address of the twin stone by a stroke of sheer luck , and Duryadhan got smitten by Bhanumati by one look at her picture , it was mutually decided to take a tour of Kalinga and win the princess with the jem .
It was hilarious how both Dury and Shakuni were taken aback when Karn said " Bas ab ye mil jaye .." looking at Bhanumati's picture🤣 . It must be so uncharacteristic of Karn to say so , to beget such a reaction out of them🤣 . Duryadhan didn't mind though as he thought his friend has also fallen for Bhanumati and of course Karn , the nerd , the bramhachari found the suggestion ridiculous that he could be interested in a woman ! 😲

Two roses , one yellow , one violet :
It was nice to see Uruvi hanging out with Bhanumati .😳 Both the girls enjoying the banter , with the customary pulling legs , marriage talks , linking Uruvi's name with that of Arjun ( thou too Bhanumati , ab kaun baki hai ?? Vasudev ?? ) and pulling her legs some as she once again objected to them being anything other than friends. The so called vain and shrew of a Bhanumati was quite conversant with Uruvi and looks like she's competitive with Uruvi as to who can hitch their wagons to the brighter star. 😉
But the takeaway from this conversation is Uruvi's description of her choice of her dream man , her mate , her lover in her own words:

"Wo aisa ho jiske praskash se ankhein jhuk jaye
Jo chale to jivaan chalne lag jaye
JO ruke to saansein ruk jaye
KOi aisa jise apse milane ke liye puri sristi bhi sharayantra karne lage
JIs ki ankhon mein tej bhi ho , aur peed bhi
Jis ke kahe sabd kahi swapno mein aye to ..to kabhi sone na de..
Jise apne bal pad ankush bhi ho, aur thoda uddand bhi ho..
JO aap ko dekhe to laaja de..
jo na dekhe , to rutha de.

What a poetic and a very romantic picture of a young girl's heart 👏, no materialistic thought included ( some thing a Bahnumati can never do. ) Ekdum dil se nikla, dil ko chhu gaya 😳

Kalinga Beckoning :
Kalinga is calling out to Karn , it's a strange pull in his heart that is visible on his face , even Duryadhan noticed it , it was that obvious !! A nameless restlessness , like a chemical reaction happening deep inside that carefully guarded heart of his and leaving rose tinted fume in it's wake. 😳

Heart's desire :
Uruvi's face immediately lightened up with hope and joy when she thought it was Karn who came from Hashtinapur and how that light extinguished one moment later when she found out it was Arjun . She looked ill at ease to hide her disappointment when Bhanumati teased her calling it Universe's conspiracy to bring them together.

Arising complication :
Arjun flat out refused to take part in the swayambhar , because his heart's loyalty lies elsewhere and he's , if nothing else, a honest and noble young man . Bhanumati and her father both were extremely disappointed because of their joint hope of getting Arjun to take part in the swayambhar and eventually becoming Bahnumati's husband were dashed to the ground.
Arjun , after asking nicely for the stone , was determined not to return without it , as an incensed Bhanumati declared she'll never allow the stone to reach his hand.
Let's see which path each of them takes to secure it as it now won't be easier for either of them, what with Arjun now losing the advantage over Karn by reaching earlier.

Excellent, but how does this fit in here?

The stop watch :
As the last scene of episode 4 rolled into episode 5 , Uruvi gave Karn a fixed date to fetch a similar jem for her and Karn readily agreed . Any one have any idea how the hell he was planning to get one ?? Me neither ! All the ways that I could think of are time taking , and being Angaraj, Karn now had plenty of resources but not time . But looks like fate was indeed meherban upon him this time around. It literally jumped the address on a piece of paper on his lap.

What struck me in this concluding section of the Uruvi-Karna encounter was her arrogant, almost mocking warning to him not to miss his deadline. She is probably cheesed off by Karna's proper but distant attitude - I don't know what she expected him to do! - and this is her way of venting her khunnas on him, while at the same time veiling hr own budding penchant towards him.

But he is as unruffled as usual, and even after she has stormed out, and Karna turns his face in what looks like inner contemplation, there is nothing to be read from his eyes.

What breed of puppy? 😉 You are so besotted with the chap yourself that you see all sorts of things that exist only in your imagination😉😉. To my mind, Karna looked bemused, as any young man would when an irritable virago descends on him uninvited and unannounced and proceeds to berate him in a most irrational fashion. He will promise anything just to get rid of her, even if there were not his vow! He will of course fall for her in due course, but this did not seem to me to be the starting point.

Emotions are his strong point. )

And she calls Jaya Vijaya stupid 😆)

Yes, Arjun senses stormy weather ahead.

And as for Uruvi, I would prefer it if they showed that she was deliberately playing dumb, to keep Arjun at bay. For no woman with an iota of sense would fail to notice when a man is falling or has fallen for her.

Tu Dhoop ki sandesh sa..bheegi bheegi ek bhor mein... :
Another moment of butterflies in the stomach and breathless high for our Uruvi who noticed her Yodhha in the garden , with Dury who else , and she couldn't take her eyes off .

At this rate, the rajvaid will soon have to treat her for digestive dysfunction!😆

Near collision :

What I liked best was Karna's superior, condescending attitude towards Arjun, which was enough to make the latter almost burst a blood vessel!

It was a delightful scene all in all.

"Wo aisa ho jiske prakash se ankhein jhuk jaye
Jo chale to jivaan chalne lag jaye
JO ruke to saansein ruk jaye
Koi aisa jise aapse milane ke liye puri srishti bhi shadyantra karne lage
Jis ki ankhon mein tej bhi ho , aur peed bhi
Jis ke kahe sabd kahi swapno mein aye to ..to kabhi sone na de..
Jise apne bal pad ankush bhi ho, aur thoda uddand bhi ho..
Jo aap ko dekhe to laaja de..
Jo na dekhe , to rootha de.

👏What a poetic and a very romantic picture of a young girl's heart , no materialistic thought included ( some thing a Bahnumati can never do. ) Ekdum dil se nikla, dil ko chhu gaya 😳

I am glad you got the whole of it, along with some words I could not make out. It was exquisite.

She is nuts.😆 How on earth could Uruvi assume that Karna, even if it he had somehow landed up in Kalinga, would seek an audience with Bhanumati? That that is exactly what happens later is not relevant here.

The fact is that she is beginning to see Karna everywhere - like a Radha enamoured of Krishna - and logic be damned!

Phew! Finished it at last! Do me , and yourself, a favour, child, don't do anything more before Saturday next.
