After the strong reactions to yesterday's episode I thought I will play the devil's advocate and make out a character sketch for the main characters of KAA
Shiv:
- A man who cares for his family.
- Loves his mother and respects his father.
- Very passionately in love with Ipshita who happens to be his childhood sweetheart.
- Unfortunately has a dosh in his kundali which would result in his first wife dying in less than a year of marriage.
- Is forced by his mother into marriage with Gauri to get rid of the kundali dosh.
- Does not want the marriage because (a) does not initially believe in the dosh and (b) cannot stand anybody in place of Ipshita. That is why he has Ipshi's picture in his bedroom to keep reminding him that he belongs to her.
- Initially tries to get rid of Gauri because he does not like her.
- Later when he realises her goodness he tries to get her back with Shashank who he thinks is her love.
- When she meets with a series of mishaps which put her life under threat he starts to believe in the kundali dosh. So admits to the plan and warns of the danger to her life if she stays with him.
- Somewhat a coward for not telling her the full truth as to why the plan was executed i.e., to unite him with his lady love Ipshi.
- Feels bad that his father will be hurt if he knows the truth because he lost his friend (Alok) because of the Plan.
- Ridden by guilt for what he is doing to Gauri.
Ipshita:
- Childhood sweetheart of Shiv. Wants to marry him and is unable because of the dosh. Maybe her mother would not allow the marriage till the dosh is removed.
- Feels sorry for Gauri since she knows what awaits her – a husband who does not love her and death within a year of marriage.
- Tries to be nice to Gauri by taking her side and advising both Shiv and Gauri what to do.
- Does not love Anupam but does not do anything to stop him pursuing her because she fears the truth about her relationship with Shiv will come out.
Nikhila:
- Loves her son dearly and wants his happiness even if it means taking away the life of another's daughter.
- Values her friendship with Ipshi's mom.
- Plans Shiv's wedding with Gauri to get rid of the dosh. Knows that the marriage cannot happen in the normal way because kundali's would be matched and the dosh will come to light.
- So allows her husband to fix Shashank's marriage with Gauri. Stages a sting operation (the blame for which is put on Shiv) to blacken Gauri's reputation and bribes Shashank to leave Gauri on the wedding day sighting the excuse that he does not trust her.
- Steps in and suggests that Shiv marry Gauri since he is responsible for ruining her life which is acceptable to Mahen.
- Thinks everything can be justified because it is for her son
Mahen:
- Is very close to Alok and his family. Thinks of Gauri as his daughter.
- Does not know about Shiv's kundali dosh.
- Is upset with Shiv for ruining Gauri's life so he tries to make amends by getting him married to Gauri.
- Upset when he comes to know the truth and is currently punishing Nikhila by giving her the cold shoulder.
- Laments the loss of his friendship with Alok.
Gauri:
- The one whose life is tossed about by everybody – Shashank, Shiv, Nikhila etc for no fault of hers.
- Did not want to marry Shiv because she thought she loved Shashank but was forced to marry him thanks to Anupam.
- Was abused by Shiv but bore it for the sake of her father.
- Fell in love with her husband during their honeymoon when they stared at the face of death. Was prepared to divorce him so that he can stay out of jail.
- Now loves Shiv so completely that she willingly goes back to live with him even if it means that she may die early.
- Deeply affected by her father's rejection of her once he came to know of her decision to stick by Shiv.
- Still in the dark regarding Shiv's relationship with Ipshita.
From the above it is clear that Gauri is good (pure diamond) and Mahen is good (so far). The rest are shades of grey, not entirely bad. Each seem to be doing what they think is best for somebody they love. The serial I feel is appropriately titled Karam apna apna because each seem to driven by some karam to act the way they do. The biggest loser as of now is Gauri because she has given so much of her love and does not appear to get anything other than the prospect of death. Quite a gloomy story as of now. Hope they redeem it somehow.
Sorry for the long post
