India's benchmark equity indices tumbled as the Middle East crisis pushed investors out of risk assets and seeking shelter in gold and Treasury bonds. The Nifty 50 sunk below 24,700 support and the BSE Sensex dropped 1,600 points to below 80,000. Larsen & Toubro and Reliance Industries were the top draggers on the Nifty index.

All sectoral indices on the NSE traded lower. Auto and realty stocks faced the sharpest decline, while defence slipped into losses after initially resisting a bear pull.

The rupee sunk under pressure from higher oil prices and likely hit to Indian exports to the Gulf that weighed on macro sentiment.

European indices fell after open while key Asian benchmarks Nikkei, Hang Seng and Kospi closed sharply lower.

Brent prices surged 10% to $80 per barrel as the conflict plunged the global crude market into turmoil, with the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Gold rose 2% to trade around $5,390 an ounce.
