5 years later
"daddy!!" nishi squeaked coming out of the school gate. She was 9 years old now and had grown up to look exactly like her mother, beautiful and innocent. Manik always came to pick her up after school, "hey ! princess! Ksa raha school?" he asked taking her bag from her shoulders. "it was good daddy!"
"bag toh bahut heavy hai, my princess has to study a lot!" he spoke and started the car. daddy mujhe aaj 2 assignments mile hain ek hindi ka and one of English...aap help karoge na??" nishi asked.
"of course princess, i will" manik spoke pulling her puffy cheeks and nishi smiled.
Soon they reached home. They didn't live in a mansion now. It was a small 3-bhk house with a courtyard full of flowers, exactly as nandini liked. When manik had taken nandini to mexico, he had given power of attorney to the CEO of his company. Manik was busy curing nandini and looking after her and nishi in mexico. Meanwhile cabir who was back in india, kept informing manik about the falling prices of shares of his company and that the company was crashing because of corruption and ill -management. Cabir wanted to save the sinking ship, like a true friend but couldn't at last and when manik returned after a year, the company was in ruins. A few loyal employees were still working in hope of rejuvenation , once manik returns. Only a few factories and sites were still operating. Manik had to sell his mansion and other immovable properties to once again build the base of the company and bring it out of ruins. He bought the current house with the savings. The company was still in debts but the percentage profit has increased considerably and manik was confident that the company will be on top once again because...
"mommy" nishi greeted as soon as the door was opened.
"agya mera baby!! How was school?"
...because manik had nandini. All the loss, all the debts were insignificant in front of the happiness that manik felt now. He had his family, together and happy. Everything else can be achieved again.
"school was good...and how is the baby doing?? Miss kiya mujhe?? Your sister??" nishi talked to nandini's tummy which held a six months old foetus of nishi's sibling and manik's child. Nandini smiled seeing nishi's love for the unborn baby. Then she looked at manik who was still at the door watching his family with a content smile on his face. She instructed nishi to change and freshen up and then walked to manik. He smiled as she encircled her arms round his neck and he held her lightly by her waist and pecked her forehead.
"tum thk ho??" he asked the usual question and she had the same answer "as long as you are with me main thk rahungi"
They shared a kiss, soft but deep. Their love in these 5 years had been like the kiss, soft and deep. Nandini had stood by him like a rock when he was trying to build up the company. She had never worried him by commenting that it was all because of me' and all that negative stuff, instead she gave him strength when he needed it. She knew how, single-handedly, he was handling office, her, and nishi. All he needed was love, which he got in plenty from her and nishi. And he kept going against all the odds.
Nandini pulled out of the kiss abruptly and turned around so that manik could not see her struggling for breath. She took small, sharp breaths while manik thought that she was feeling shy so he hugged her from back keeping his chin on her shoulders and whispered "i am going back to office. If you need anything, call me and be careful" she turned around and smiled "ok...tum befikr ho kar jao...main apna khayal rakhungi and nishi hai na!"
"haaan! Mai hoon na...i am a big girl now!" nishi spoke and manik pulled away smiling and kneeled down to meet her height.
"ok so my big girl. Daddy is going office...raat ko apke assignment me help karunga..ok?"
"ok daddy"
A month passed this way. All was blissful, around manik and nandini. Their life was perfect until...
Manik had gone to the grocery retail shop to buy the monthly quota. He was skimming through the items , searching for some stuff that he noticed nandini's doctor on the other side of the shelf. He called out to her to enquire about nandini's health.
"hello, doctor tripathi"
"oh, hello mr. Malhotra! " she replied and then introduced her husband and manik. Some informal talks continued. Doctor roshni tripathi noticed the happiness on manik's face and felt extremely guilty for hiding the truth from him, on nandini's insistence.
nandini, is acting stupid by not telling him the truth...should i tell him? Yes of course i should. I am a doctor and telling lies is against the ethics of my profession. And manik meeting me here, alone for the first time in these 7 months is a sign that god too wants me to tell him the truth' roshni thought.
"roshni where are you lost?? Mr malhotra is asking something" her husband's voice broke her interior monologue.
"actually mr malhotra i have something to tell you...please listen to me carefully and be strong.." as she spoke, manik felt like blood dried in his veins. All terrible, negative thoughts flooded his mind but what she said next, was the thing manik had not prepared himself to hear.
"nandini's life in danger" she said and manik stumbled back. He had thought that there is some issue with the child, but, but...nandini...he had saved her once, brought back from the clutches of death, he had not imagined even in worst nightmares, that he would lose her again.
Roshni's husband out of compassion held manik to give him support while roshni spoke further " when she had first come to see me with you , before that she had called me and said that i should not speak anything negative in your presence. I tried to turn her around but she literally begged me into this and after reading her reports , i knew that this is a complicated case but i didn't tell you. When you left she came back to me again and i informed her the whole matter. That keeping this child is impossible because her body is too weak to meet the demands of the baby but she didn't listen..."
So, now , manik knew why nandini had insisted on seeing dr tripathi, so that she could have her way. Dr tripathi was the same doctor who had been nandini's consultant doctor during nishi's birth.
Dr tripathi continued , "even that would have been fine...we could have managed to save both, but last month...a test revealed that her cancer had resurfaced and is growing faster than ever...i don't think nandini and the baby will go through it together. Saving nandini is impossible...we can only think of the baby..."
That was it for manik! He couldn't hear more. He felt everything blacked out in front of his faces. For a moment nothing was visible and the ringing sound in his ears was not stopping. He held his head between his palms almost crushing it. But then, slowly the sound faded and the blackness too. And now Flashes of the warning that the doctor's in mexico had given to manik, when nandini had been cured played in manik's head.
5 years, is like a probation time for her. If the cancer triggers again in these 5 years, no one can save your wife. Be careful, young man!' the doctor had said and patted his shoulder.
At that moment , manik had been super confident that 5 years would fly by and he won't let anything happen to nandini. And here, the cancer was brewing right below his nose and he had no idea!! Freaking no idea!
Why did nandini do this?? I had nishi...i freaking had nishi, my daughter! Why did she take the risk of another child! Why? Did i ever make her feel that i want my own child? Did i? Why nandini why? Why? What will i do now? How will i save her?
Manik's phone started ringing. But it seemed he didn't hear, so roshni's husband patted his shouder "mr malhotra your phone!" he said and manik picked up the call
"daddy! Daddy!" nishi spoke hysterically over the phone. Manik panicked.
"nishi ???? what happened princess? Is mommy ok???" manik asked and kept his hand over his heart. He was feeling an excruciating pain over there.
"daddy.." nishi tried to speak further but she hiccupped and manik lost his patience, and for the first time in 5 years he shouted on nishi "nishi! Will you tell me what has happened!!!!"
Nishi shivered but spoke in one go" mommy was having difficulty in breathing. So i first called the ambulance of which you had given number and then now i am calling you..." she spoke and manik felt the ground slip within his feet. "daddy! Ambulance has come they are taking mommy. I am with her. Please come soon. I am scared"
"princess, i will be right after you. Just take care of your mommy" manik spoke in a lifeless voice as he knew nandini was gone this time. He cut the call and asked roshni to come with him. She agreed and her husband too. Manik was in no state to drive, so they took him in their car.
On reaching the hospital, they made their way towards nandini who had been shifted into the operation theatre. Nishi was crying hysterically in the arms of cabir. She had called up everyone she knew. That's why cabir was there and navya inside the operation theatre. As she saw manik, she ran to him and hugged his waist.
"daddy!" she sobbed. Manik patted her back and gestured cabir to hold her. As cabir pulled nishi away manik kissed her forehead and walked away to talk to the doctor
"doctor can i please see my wife for a few minutes before you operate. Please" manik asked. And doctor seeing his condition nodded. Manik walked inside and saw nandini's chest heaving up and down due to the laboured breath. He said nothing. He did nothing. He just stood there as if trying to sketch her face permanently into his mind. There was no time to question, no time to argue. Only a few moments to love and get loved. He moved forward and placed a kiss on her forehead. His lips lingered there and tears trickled down her eyes. As manik stood beside her , looking at her, she removed the oxygen mask and spoke her last words, or it would be correct to say, her last wish.
"save the baby manik, please and if its a boy, name him ISH and if its a girl... ISHQ" she spoke and took a sharp laboured breath "i love you and i will always do" she said holding his palm over he bossom and her body convulsed. The nurse present there put back her oxygen mask and rushed to call doctor. "i love you too and will do till my last breath, nandini!" manik whispered, kissing her palm.
The doctor came in and manik spoke emotionlessly "save the baby"
He came out and sat down on one of the bench. Cabir tried to stop nishi from going near manik but she didn't listen and sat beside manik keeping her head on his arm. Speaking nothing. Manik didn't move. He was dead , only his soul hadn't left the body.
90 minutes later , all the doctors came out. Manik and nishi both got up for an answer .
"the baby is premature, so we have kept it in incubation and..."
"and...?" manik asked
"we couldn't save your wife. I am sorry but she is dead."
The body came out on stretcher to be kept in the morgue room. one look at the face of nandini, pale and cold, the tempest that had been forming inside manik all this while broke all barriers and came to fore, tearing the hearts of all the acquaintances present there. The sight of manik falling on the floor right on his knees was heart wrenching. Nishi patting her mother's cheek and wailing "mommy utho na...mommy...please..aap ni uthoge toh mujhe school k lye kaun ready karega? Kaun mujhe meri galtiyo pe dantega...mommy aap sun rahe ho?? Mommy!!" was a sight no one would ever want to witness in their lives again.
Manik pulled nishi into his arms and took her in a bone crushing hug. Both father-daughter hugged each other and cried , cried like anything. Navya bent down wiping her tears, so did cabir, even a little boy, who was nishi's classmate came forward and consoled her.
"manik, you have to be strong yaar...you are not alone...you have people to look after...the new born baby ..think about him yaar, uski kya galti hai?? You can't punish him, right??" hearing that manik broke the hug and looked at cabir, "him??? Is it a boy??" manik asked and cabir nodded smiling amidst his tears.
"ish" manik murmured and a fresh set of tears trickled down his eyes.
Navya picked up nishi in her arms "chalo beta, apne chote bhai se ni milna tumhe?"
"but mommy??" nishi asked hiccupping.
"beta mommy ne pta hai mujhse kya kaha operation theatre mein...mommy ne kaha ki..nishi ko bolna ek achi sister, ek achi daughter banne...apne bhai aur daddy ka khayal rakhne...aur hamesa khush rehne...she will become a star now and keep vigil on you...if you cry she will think you didn't obey her...do you want to make her sad??" navya cooked up a story to distract nishi.as nishi bobbed her head, navya took nishi to the incubator where her brother is.
Meanwhile, manik decided to first perform the last rites of nandini only then he would see the baby.
"but manik, her parents are on their way..." cabir tried to speak but was cutoff in mid by manik.
"cabir i want to release her from the ties of this world. She has suffered so much in life let her rest in peace atleast after death"

Manik came back after the funeral ceremony, and directly went to see his son. No one was allowed to touch him. So he watched him from a distance and tears kept flowing down, remembering their moment together.
"manik i want a boy" nandini would say all the time.
"arey but why?? I want a daughter.." manik had countered her one day.
"we already have a daughter na, so i want a son...one daughter and one son...it will be an ideal family" she had answered dreamily and manik had frowned.
"your wish has been fulfilled nandini, but navya told me that you didn't even live to hear that it's a son , nandini" manik talked to himself, tears had not stopped, "see, he has my eyes and lips but a cute face like you...he is our son! ...I promise , i will make our children, nishi and ish...best human being, just like you wanted...so wherever you are just stay happy and in peace!"
