KY2 makes an impact because of the way it deals with things, specially the big things. Because they don't make a big stage, bajaofy the dhandora, do all "hayee! hayee!" to bring attention to the issues. They let the issues naturally seep in between the everyday conversations of these characters which represent the KY2 world to us. Be it the witty way they slipped in a thing like BDSM, which became a well known term after the success of a book series, in an exchange between Cabir and Mukti, or the simple manner in which Cabir talked about the isolation he felt because of his orientation, "I can't even face myself in the mirror." It's really so easy to say that KY2 is a success because it uses all kinds of gimmicks like using the lead pair's chemistry in "hawt scenes" to make people watch it, but quite honestly, boil it all down and the answer is clear that KY2 is what it is today because of it's ability to say big things in little words.
And the best thing is that all these big things wrapped in little words aren't just blasted at us out of the blue. We get pieces of it, bit by bit, over the course of time; the idea starts to take place in our head before it is dealt with. The idea can either be something which has been brought up since the beginning (Manik and Nandini's smile) or something which was introduced to us just a day before (Cabir's khuddari). Before we get to the real deal of things, we are introduced to a fraction of it, to test us, to tease us, to make us introspect into it before the show presents it's POV. It's such an interactive method of story telling that kitna bhi main bol dun ke ab buss hogaya, essay tou nikal hi jaata hai 😆
Manik and Nandini's friendship phase is all kinds of adorable. Because we are getting their friendly ease mixed with their sexual tension. It's such a best of both world scenario with him. We are getting Nandini trying to calm him down as a friend, we see Manik saying the words "your smile calms me down" in the manner of a lover, we see him kiss her goodbye and her smile in response. There's no thing as Nandini insisting on only being friends and Manik taking it as a challenge that he will make her take back her friendship. He claims that he's playing along because he has no choice but somewhere within him, he likes this casual intimacy he gets to share with her. I can't tell you how happy I got seeing Nandini confess that starting a day on bad note will ruin the entire day and Manik's skeptical reaction at that. Because that's all this friendship is about - to know the basic traits about each other. To take it slow so as to not regret it later. They will know each other, the little things and the big things, so that when it comes to troubling situations they wouldn't be left clueless about how to deal with things.
Dhruv and Alya are another interesting situation. They are practically in a relationship after being with each other at their lowest phases. It was gradual and natural for them. Since the beginning we have seen them encounter each other at their real self. Dhruv was the sole witness to Alya's ugliness when she sent goons after Nandini. Alya knew just how deep Dhruv's infatuation with Nandini was. These two are the friends who've been with each other through thick and thin, and they've been the only one for each other. They still are. It's interesting to see where they'll go from here. Secrets don't really leave Fab5, do they? Dhruv and Alya aren't shying from each other now, no awkwardness and running away from the tension between them, they are spending their personal happy time with each other. What's left to be seen is when and how they'll come out with it..
Cabir and Manik's conversation was another great piece of writing from the show. We've seen Cabir wanting to make himself financially stable because he doesn't like being dependent on his friends. It just kind of throws my topic from yesterday out of the window because Cabir is uncomfortable being looked out by Manik these days. He cherishes the care Manik shows him but if he had to choose, he'd rather not be cared for like this way. What Cabir always wanted was acceptance, not clutches to hold for support. And he gets plenty acceptance from his friends, enough to make him go through the days. It's wonderful how Manik realizes that. This age old conversation about, "Ehsaan nahin kar raha, loan de raha hoon. Paai paai ka hisaab lunga" became a little more beautiful because I know that Manik really doesn't care if Cabir ever pays him back or not, but he says it anyway because right now it's not him who is the deal here, it's Cabir. And Cabir needed to hear that his friend was not bestowing any favor on him but rather temporarily helping him out of a fix till he can manage for himself. That's why Cabir relaxed after hearing those words and Manik didn't protest when Cabir said he'd pay for the bills.
Now, the sex talk.
Nandini's conversation with the Principal was...interesting. The issue is too big and we got only the first glimpse of it today so I won't go in the right and wrong of thing. Because the issue here isn't only the pre-marital sex but the consequences of it. Notice the difference here, Nandini was not feeling any shame in saying the word sex whereas the Principal was boiling at the mere mention of it. Nahin, galat, tabboo. That's his mentality. Normal, self-choice, fact. That was her POV. The clash of the most prevalent ideologies was introduced to us in such an amazing manner. Teenage pregnancy is a topic that they haven't touched yet, because it's another big thing. Abhi they have to deal with the thing that leads to this pregnancy - sex. Like Nandini said, break down the big things into small ones and deal with them one by one.
Though let me talk about what I found the most interesting here - Manik's reaction. Nandini very simply asked him if he ever had a physical relationship before and Manik's reaction to that was part hilarious and part intriguing. We know that Manik is a very physical person when it comes to showing his affections. Nandini knows it too. But when it comes down to talking about it, Manik takes his time and asks Nandini if she really wants to know that. I saw it as something that was triggered because of this lack of sex awareness on a broader scale. I mean, a cool, high society guy like Manik who has indulged in such activities before and is friends with people who have done the same, he was positively hesitating talking about it all because it was weird hearing about it from the mouth of someone like Nandini. Sex, despite being a common fact, is still such an unnatural topic to talk about.
This sex talk is very neatly tied up with Navya's situation. Had she been properly educated about sex or even aware of this fact that teenagers indulge in such activity as a purely physical thing and not some deep soulful connection leads to this intimacy, her position would've been different. She was unaware of the fact that sex, at the end of the day, is just a physical need of a body. It need not always be a result of deep love and commitment. For her it was the latter, for her Harshad it was the former. And both of them didn't bother clearing their concept about it.
Sex is an individual choice but jab logon ko uske baare mein pata hi nahin hoga, koi baat hi nahin karega, tou mistakes and situations like Navya's are bound to come up. I look forward to seeing how this is going to be played out..
Did I mention that MaNan as friends are bliss? Pure, legit, pakka wala bliss.
