@Annie
When they started focusing on individual characters and gave them a back story that is when it became a totally different show. The thought and depth makes you feel that these characters are not just there for random reasons but they all serve a purpose.

What a beautiful journey Manik has had. Same for Nandu- I feel the more we know her, she might appear to be ideal because rest of them are so broken or out of touch with reality , yet sometimes her reactions are so real. She is so normal and that is endearing.

I think the writers do tend to experiment in the beginning just to see what is being liked by the audience. Once that phase passed, the writers moved onto what they probably had penned down at the onset. This might have been the case for KY2 though I do feel that this show had a very positive & strong feeling right from the beginning. It was in fact very brave to have all those ragging scenes and then, the kiss as well and now exploring homosexuality. That's a huge huge step for India! As for ragging - I've watched it but obviously it was something I wanted them to just get done with. However, the show and the feel of the characters - especially the aura of Fab5 wouldn't have been as it is now. It was like foundation of the show minus random scenes :)

I hope I didn't ramble ;-P

Like Genie said, the show was rather slow and strangely disjointed which I disliked. I actually have an aversion to youth shows because they are so superficial in general, you know which ones I'm talking about. They lack good characterization and proper depth. I also don't watch purely romantic shows in general, Gul Khan stuff to be more precise. So, I can be a little picky. I hated the famous shows IF loves. So I didn't think I would like another youth show again.
But I often cannot believe how mature this show has become. It started as a simplistic youth show, but it became so much more with time. It was so average when it started out. Fanaah was completely dominating it. But gradually, KY2 edged over Fanaah in a major way.
Adhira, it was not about the ragging actually, which I rather liked from the perspective of the story, but the disjointed and random scenes. Once they gained some confidence, they actually started to explore characterization and narrative much better.

The thing is its really hard to experiment with Indian TV, just for example take Manik, people want to see white-washed characters, why is he physically attracted to Nandini, how can someone break up and date someone else , so on and so forth but people forget in real life. there are really no white-washed characters. I commend MTV for that , for trying to do it differently, honestly speaking every channel, should be doing that. Make it more relatable and believable, dismissing stereotypes etc.

Yeah I heard Fanaah was meant to be more popular but I'm actually loving the concept of ky2, not only youth but it's very real indian society today, not just in indian but for us indians around the world too.

THIS.
I mean, I was obviously not expecting a Gulaal from KY2, but when they actually sat down and started to flesh out characters, it became much more than a standard youth show.
Manik, too. I have said often enough that I actually started with not liking Manik and believing he is a linear character. But the way they are fleshing out Manik with every episode is wonderful. What I like is all of the characters make sense and contribute to the story.
They are not just here to help the lead or second leads press up against each other. All of them have their own issues to deal with. I like that.

@CC- I now get why they serve us unrealistic too wishy-washy characters. Because most don't want to see characters make mistake, be wrong or even do something which can be termed as social unacceptable .
Mtv is doing a commendable job honestly, not easy the way they have been tackling the tracks specially Raghav-Cabir. But I really like how even for an obvious Manik-Nandu thing, they are building it so steadily and meaningfully .

@ Genie - I completely agree with what you said about Manik & Nandu. They are both very grey shaded IMO (though Maniks character did some more black in the beginning but it has all changed now). That's what makes them close to reality, that's why we understand them because they are flawed and that is how humans are. No one is perfect. But it is their circumstances that build that individual. Nandu is shown to be strong headed and yet very vulnerable, because she lost her parents at a young age and takes care of her brother like a mother...but now I can see Manik protecting her even though he is equally shattered. She will help him deal with his mom. The way she smoothened that frown on his face the other day was so so endearing & foreshadowed just that.

Have to really thank the CVs for beautifully building Maniks and Nandus characters.
