"I find saas-bahu soaps artificial"

As the wily Porineeta in Zee's Tumhari Disha, Kavita Kaushik has made her mark in tellydom. She also plays a lawyer in Star One's Remix; was a part of Sony's Ye Meri Life hai and also anchors Zee's Kahiye To. Kavita Kaushik spoke to Misha Malhotra about her likes, dislikes and her experiences in tellydom.

'Kavita: I hate bad actors

Can you tell us about your new show on Zee TV?
The show called Kahiye To comes on Zee TV on Sundays. It is just like Rakshanda's show on Sony Ab Aayega Mazaa. Here, I invite celebrities and chit-chat with them. This proves to be the best time for me to bond with my old friends whom I don't get to meet because of our busy schedules.

How do you prepare yourself for the show?
To be very honest, I haven't done any preparations for the show. The show doesn't follow a script. I just have to be myself. And that's not difficult at all.

Were you comfortable doing this show?
Yes, I was quite comfortable. As in, I didn't have to do any homework. Just go on the sets and then be very interactive. Off-screen also I love talking. Hence it came very naturally to me.

What part would you prefer playing?
Now, this is a very tough one. But let me try. There are many characters which I would like to play. I would love to play a cop, a Punjabi kudi (gir), a gaon ki gawar (an illiterate from a village). I believe it will be challenging and creative to do such roles.

How do you balance your time and your roles?
I am a very chilled out person. I don't like to take too many tasks at one time. So I generally do one at a time. Which as a result doesn't make my day so tiresome and I am satisfied with what I do. I just do those roles which are challenging and which excite me.

Kavita: I am myself on 'Kahiye To

Are you looking at more films after the Saif starrer Ek Hasina Thi?
I want a break right now. Hence I am planning a holiday to Bangalore. There I would do river rafting at the Kaveri. Oh it's so exciting. This will happen sometime in June after which I will be deciding which more serials to take.

What are your likes and dislikes?
I am a very home loving person. I am very simple, I don't like partying much.

Would you like to be part of saas-bahu soaps?
I find them so artificial; I love parallel genre of soaps and cinema. I have also been a part of a telefilm, called Padalaxmi for Star One, which described one day of my life.

Are you basically from Mumbai?
Officially from Delhi. I shifted to Mumbai two and half years back. Mumbai is a very warm city.

How did you decide on coming to Mumbai?
I was just about to start my direction course at Jamia Milia, when I went for the auditions of Kutumb. I got selected and once I came here, there was no looking back.

Anything happening on your personal front...
I have no love life as of now. But I might get settled; say in two years or so

Comparing Urvashi with Sonia Gandhi is unfair!"

Tisca Chopra has come full circle in life. She started her career as a leading lady to Ajay Devgan, disappeared from the film industry, then did plays like Mahtama V/S Gandhi, Salesman Ramlal and Inshah Allah and finally joined television with Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. She's also done films like Hyderabad Blues II, Loknayak Jay Prakash Nariayan and Karma. Right now she is playing 'Urvashi in Sarrkkar. Here speaks to Prashant Golecha on career, life and Buddhism.

How is it playing Ronit Roy's wife in Sarrkkar?
The relationships one portrays are secondary. What is important is my character "Urvashi" and its graph. It is nice to be the part of an interesting show.

What is so special about your character "Urvashi" in "Saarkar"? If parallels are drawn between the serial and the Gandhi family, do you think you are portraying Sonia?
Comparing Urvashi with Sonia Gandhi is an unfair comparison. Urvashi is morally the strongest character. She speaks her mind and is managing the house. I do have a difference of opinion with the character of my husband, the role essayed by Ronit. By and large, Urvashi is a strong and silent person.

Your role of "Mallika" in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii was negative but popular. How much did you relate to it?
The experience was outstanding. But I don't identify with it at all. The audience loved me. Whenever I met fans, they used to tell me - why don't you let Aryan marry Shruti??

On the personal front, how come you changed your name from Priya to Tisca overnight?
The word "Tisca" means Holy River and that's my original name. Priya was the name given by the producer of my first film, as the alphabet P was lucky for him! But after that, I started using my original name...

You are into the Buddhist way of life. How did it start?
It all started seven and a half years ago. I had few personal issues and I wasn't getting answers to my questions from anywhere. A family friend spoke to me about it. Initially, I started reading about it. I found comfort and what I needed. Buddhism is a way of my life now. Dr. Daisaku Ikada who lives in Japan is my Guru. I do intend to meet him someday. I was awarded a medal for art and culture through him recently too.

What difference has Buddhism made in your life?
I have stopped feeling helpless. I don't look up to others to run my life. I know how to lead my life and get results out of it. I can help others become independent as well. I want to share what I have gained.

Literature is supposed to be your second love. Does it run in the family, considering you are related to Mr. Khushwant Singh. What was his reaction on knowing that you are doing a show based on the Gandhi family?
I am a literature graduate from Hindu College, New Delhi. I read a lot of philosophy. Khushwant Singh is my mom's uncle. I have not met him for a long time. Till now, though, there has been no reaction from him on my role as such.

Do you feel looking good is very important for TV actors?
Not at all. Actors like Irrfan Khan and Shefali Shah aren't really conventionally good looking. What matters most for a TV actor is a strong personality and the roles which should be interesting and which one can play with deep conviction.

What are your future plans?
The future has its own plan. I have a lot of goals like opening a production house, take writing more seriously and do a few good films.

SwetaSexyKeswani says Dekho Magar Pyaar Se

Seen Sweta Keswani lately? Caught up with her at a coffee shop and she was looking a million bucks in a short top and tight pants! No extra weight, squeaky clean skin, cool smile and vibrant body-language.

Her decision to opt out from both Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii and Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand- despite both Ekta Kapoor and Aroona Irani keen that she continue- has done her a world of good. "I have cut down on carbs and am eating lots of proteins. Yehi hai mera raaz," she says.

We knew there was no love lost between Star Plus and Sweta. Dressed in a white top and blue pants, she was the cynosure of everyone at the Star Parivaar nite and sent males salivating when she took centre-stage at the Athena party that followed.

Guess what! The hottie is all set to shock you in Star Plus' new daily Dekho Magar Pyaar Se which airs 26 July at 8 pm. The character in question is Tanya Bedi who is Karan's (Keith Sequeria- the male lead) supermodel girlfriend, very insecure and possessive about her love.

"I am back on Star Plus and feeling on top of the world. Tanya dons the most outrageous costumes, deep plunging necklines and shortest of skirts. I don't think anybody would have worn hotter clothes on Indian television ever before," squealed the Sindhi babe.

Sweta explained that she she got a call for this role only at the start of this week. "I had to rush to colour my hair and look out for my lenses, there was so much to do in such short time. I am enjoying it. I am very excited."

Just last month, Sweta shot for an item number in Tauba Tauba which features another oomph girl Payal Rohatgi. The shooting took place in Pune as Sweta gyrated displaying her voluptuous charms to the oomphy number 'Qurban Qurban'. Guess who's producing the film! The same guy who made the sex laden Hawas starring Meghna Naidu, Shawar Ali and Tarun Arora.

Wanna lay bets on who's going to be a bigger acid test on testosterones- Payal or Sweta? Forget it. We are not taking sides!

Treading foreign territory

They are crossing the border with temerity. But for once, neither country is complaining. Welcome to the world of cross border television, the latest trend to sweep the small screen in India and its neighbour.

Aman Varma has crossed the LoC to act in a Pakistani serial, as has the latest Indian femme fatale of the telly, Aamna Shariff. Mandira Bedi is seriously considering lending her presence to another Pak show and Nausheen, known thus far only as Kkusum, has also signed on the dotted line. Not to be outdone, Sakshi Tanwar has jumped onto the bandwagon.

Several Pakistani singers and bands are already vying for a presence in India via concerts and feature films. Does this mark a fusion of the art scene in the subcontinent?

"It all began when I was in Mumbai for some work and realised that Indian TV actors are interested in working with their Pakistani counterparts," says actor-producer Humayyun who is putting finishing touches to the first Indo-Pakistani TV project- Ana (The Ego)- featuring Nausheen Kkusum Ali Sardar and Aamna Kashish Shariff.

Bahu dons purdah?

Sakshi Parvati Tanwar has just returned from Dubai after shooting two episodes for Pakistani serial Kuchh Rishte Kachhe Dhaagon Ke "Some of my portions will be shot in Karachi. This time instead of sarees, I will be wearing churidar-kameez to go with my character. Plus I am looking forward to shopping and sightseeing." Tanwar plays a Muslim girl, Ayesha, romantically paired opposite another Indian actor Shahbaaz Khan (last seen as Tipu Sultan). Aman Varma stars in the same show directed by Kamal Monga.

Spaghetti strap specialist Mandira Bedi says she has an offer to act in a TV serial in Pakistan and hints that she would give it a thought after September. Refusing to divulge any details, all she says is, "I have the standing offer for a long time from a Pakistani actor, when I was in Lahore for the Indo-Pak cricket series."

Sangeeta 'Pammi' Ghosh too has been lapped up by a Pakistani serial. As you read this, she is busy shooting in Dubai. The show (untitled as yet) produced by Mushroom Productions, co-stars Vikas Bhalla and Himani Shivpuri. Sangeeta plays Safina, a happily married girl who coaxes her husband to remarry when she is diagnosed as suffering from a terminal illness. Feelings of jealousy creep in when she sees her hubby with the second wife and after she learns that the doctor had made a faux pas in the diagnosis.

Can we see some Pak beauties here?

The shows are different enough to warrant our actors heading across the border, but production houses too seem to want to get some Pakistani lovelies in their serials.

Says BAG Films- Mumbai head Rajesh Chaddha, "Lately, we had several rounds of auditions for some of our forthcoming shows. But we could not get one single face who was good in looks or talent, leave aside both. It would be a refreshing change if we could take some of the Pakistani actors into our fold. BAG films is thinking of doing such a project. But logistically I don't know if it would work out if those shows are not going to be aired in India."

A quick survey indicates that the shows in question may see the light of day in India very soon. "Talks are on to telecast Ana (The Ego) on Indian channels. I am talking to Sahara and Sony. I will opt for one who would market my show more aggressively," asserts Humayyun. According to industry sources, Kuchh Rishte Kachhe Dhaagon Ke is likely to go on air on Channel Geo in Pakistan.

Says Triptii Sharma, Sahara's programming VP, "Some production houses have approached us with the concept of having Indian and Pakistani actors together, but at the end of the day, it should not be done for just the heck of it. Sahara is considering these proposals by adding its own inputs, but it's early days to make a statement actually."

Crossing the border

How do the actors manage their schedules? Nausheen did it post Kkusum when she was free, and Aamna managed to take a 12-day break from Kahiin To Hoga. None of these actors feel that they would become less popular in India since they work in Pakistani serials. "We won't go out of sight so we won't go out of mind as well," quips Aman Varma. "In fact, my portions are going to be shot in Mumbai from 12 August. So I guess it won't be difficult to adjust."

Indian TV actors seem to be enjoying their stints in Pakistan, as it takes them beyond the usual kitchen politics and extra-marital affairs endemic to Indian soaps. Kucch Rishtey Kachche Dhaagon Ke is about a man who has two wives, an Indian Muslim and a Pakistani Muslim. The story is not about how he is sandwiched between the two, but about the children from these two wives who detest each other. On the other hand, Ana (The Ego) is about a son whose father is an egoist who makes his children feel insecure all the time. "I don't know whether these projects will foster good relations between India and Pakistan, but as an actor, I am relieved to be doing something different. Doing one show for a long time kills one's creativity pursuits," insists Varma.

Nausheen who will soon be seen in Star Plus' Kaalchakra in a triple role endorses the view, "Working with a Pakistani crew was a good proposition, primarily because of the change in set-up and the fact that it was a fresh subject. But I wish they would pay more. I realised very late that we Indian actresses were given lesser amounts compared to what Pakistani actors get on their home soil." But Aamna says, "I was paid very handsomely. I have set a certain market value for myself and I don't compromise below that. Else I wouldn't have done it."

Wider exposure, more adulation, more of the moolah. How many more Indian TV stars will join the bandwagon?

Manasi's about-face!
If you were one of those missing hot bod Manasi Varma in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii (she was shown to have departed for Bangalore), this one is for you. The leggy lass hasn't been twiddling her thumbs at home, but has been busy as a bee meeting up film producers. "They were very professional and receptive," says a glowing Manasi. And when we looked closely, we realised that the glow was a mite more than internal happiness. Manasi has been heavily into skin treatment that has completely cleared her face from all p***les, scars et al. "I am soon coming back in Kahaani... and you will notice the change," she tells us. We can't wait!

Sachin in form
While Sachin Tendulkar may not have been in rousing form wuith the bat recently, telly Sachin (Krishna of Kahaani...) has a reason to celebrate. While his character in Ekta's soap is developing really large, we hear that the young lad is being considered for Nimbus' project Kareena Kareena for Zee TV.

Going wild!

Ekta Kapoor needs no reason to throw a party. But on 31 October, she plans a cards session for all her cast and crews at her Juhu bungalow. Few will be there for some serious gambling, while others who don't have any clue about it will be there just to make an appearance!

Riya V. Anandwala spoke to these Balaji stars.

Shabbir Ahluwalia

Shabbir Ahluwalia:
Yes, I am definitely going to be there.I don't really gamble, but it's only on Diwali that I play cards. I will be garbed in Indian wear, probably a kurta. I am going there specially to play cards. I don't know about winning today, but from past three years I have been losing consecutively.

Riva Bubber

Riva Bubber:
Hmmm…I am not sure! I don't really play cards actually. If I go, it will be for a short while. Otherwise, I prefer staying at home, as its Diwali.

Tina Parakh

Tina Parakh:
Yes! I will be going tonight and I am planning to slip on something Indian as its Diwali. I don't play cards at all, I am just going there to catch up with my friends. Ekta's parties are definitely fun oriented, so even if I can't spend much time there, I will certainly go for a while.

Chetan Hansraj

Chetan Hansraj:
Yeah! I am definitely going to be there. It's Ekta's party yaar, it's going to be great fun. Yes, I am going to indulge in a few card games, and win lots of money!

Ejaz Khan

Ejaz Khan:
Yaa! I am going to be there, without any doubt. What am I going to wear?? What I wear normally, I guess. Cards? I don't know what comes after 10! I am not going there to play cards, I am just going there to enjoy with my friends. Despite being a Muslim, I do celebrate this festival. I go to my friends' place and light diyas and all those sorts of things. This happens because I stay alone!

Neha Bamb

Neha Bamb:
No! I can't go because I am unwell. I have been ordered bed rest for three days and I have not being shooting too. I do play cards, but I don't prefer playing for big stakes. Am I upset about not being able to go? No, not at all!

Ramazan- Time for devotion and dedication!

Chicken Biryani, kheer, and all sorts of fruits are the core attraction of this month. As Ramazan is here, Muslim's are fasting in full force and so are our television stars. Long hours of shooting in a day and keeping away from any kind of intake is such a task, but not for our stars. "Where there is a will, there is a way!" is what they believe in and live up to their old tradition of fasting.

Riya V. Anandwala talks to our Muslim celebs and finds out their preparations for Idd.

Iqbal Khan

Yes I have kept roza this time. It is extremely difficult to shoot while roza, but I guess God gives me that extra thing. Right now I have a dance show to do, and its happening, the best way to manage is, not to think about it! I break my fast with "tabarukh" which is Kashmir's Prasad. The best part about Ramazan is, technically it keeps my body clean, we don't talk much which is good. And otherwise it gives us inner strength, we don't abuse and don't indulge in fights. I do namaaz all 5 times in a day during Ramazan. I haven't shopped for anything as of now, because of lack of time, but for Idd I will buy a nice white pathani. When it comes to food, I love it anyway. Though I shouldn't be talking about it, as I am fasting right now(laughs), but non-veg, fruits and many drinks are something which I gorge on. Badaam ke khajur, is another thing which I love!

Hussain

Yes I do keep Roza's. I believe where there is will there is a way! So it is a part of our regularity, and it shouldn't come in our way, be it shooting or tsunami. I break my fast with "khajur" and fruits. In principle, it cleans up one's body system. It comes once in a year, so for the whole month you are striving to keep your body up to the mark. It also depends a great deal on what you eat, if you consistently eat the same junk then it won't make a difference. It is a period to remember our prophet. I haven't shopped for anything as of now, and not even decided. I do go out at nights to have the Ramazan fare.

Nausheen Ali Sardar

No, I am not fasting regularly this time. I used to fast a lot, when I was in school and college. I have just kept two, and why I don't fast during my shoots is because, it is really difficult to manage both. One can't afford to look dry on camera, and if I am hungry that shows on my face. Putting a lot of make-up during Ramazan is not allowed too. So basically my whole concentration will be driven on my fasting, so I avoid that. I break my fast with "khajur" or "namak". I haven't shopped for anything as of now, but yes two days before I will definitely buy salwar kameez, may be in the shade of white, mango yellow, wine colours or red. When it comes to the Ramazan feast, as I have given up eating chicken and mutton two years back, I gorge on fish and of course can't stay without saivya and kheer.

Ali Hasan

Yes, I am fasting and it is not at difficult for me while I am shooting. I take it as a challenge to fast while shooting. On the contrary staying home is rather difficult. I break my fast with "khajur" which everyone is supposing to, and then it follows. The whole month of Ramazan is a very pure month, the moment we enter in this month, I feel so clean. It's not only about food, but about mind, body and soul. It's a stoppage on all bad acts and language. It transforms me completely. I enjoy it completely. Shopping? I am not a shopping fanatic as such, I do it as and when I get time. Haven't bought anything as such till now, I might not get time even a day before Idd. Coming to the Ramazan feast, I love food made by my mom, everything, whatever she makes is too good.

Paheli-Right Choice?

Paheli is the Indian entrant in the Oscars! For some it's shocking news while others are unruffled by it. Black, Page3, Iqbal, being Paheli's strong contenders have made a place in hearts of our Telly stars. So let's have a look at what they have to say.

Riya V. Anandwala spoke to them.

Rajeshwari Sachdev: I have seen the movies, Paheli; it was a very nice film. I am attached to such genres of films. But when it comes to Oscars, I think Black would have been the best option ever. Black had amazing performances, it was very stylized. Paheli didn't work with a particular set of audience but there was no middle way aboutBlack. So according to me, it is definitely Black
Sanjit Bedi: I have stopped thinking about it! First of all, we are so excited that an Indian movie is going for Oscars. I haven't seen Paheli though, but still I had a strong feeling for Parineeta. That movie was a strong Indian product. Everything about that movies was great. Paheli must have been good too, but I personally think, that it should have been Parineeta.
Parmeet Sethi: I haven't seen the movie though, but I would opt for Swades. I feel it's a great movie and every Indian should be proud of it!
Sunita Menon: I have seen the movie and I think it's the best choice for Oscars. I don't think that any other movie could fit in. People of the west want to see something Indian and not westernized. And Paheli has a typical Rajathani flavour, a great Indian touch!
Gurdeep Kohli: I strongly feel Black should have been nominated for Oscars. I have seen Paheli and it is a very nice film, but some how not meant for Oscars. Black seems to be very international.
Bhanu Uday: I don't want to get into all this. If it has been nominated then all the best to it!
Chetan Hansraj: I am surprised how Paheli has been nominated for Oscars. I haven't seen it though. But I feel that movies like Black or Page3 should have bagged it! They were fantastic

Ajay Gehi: According to me, it should have either been Black or Iqbal. They were movies with some great performances, without any songs. I have seen Paheli but I don't think it should have been nominated for Oscars. I saw Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Maara a few days back, this could have also qualified for Oscars.

Theek Na Bhool?

We ask the Bong actor fraternity whether dada is right in his stance on the current cricket spat.
Cricket has always been a favourite issue with everyone. Or so we thought. When we quizzed a cross section of Bengali TV actors on the above mentioned issue, however, we realized that some are so immersed in their schedules that aren't even aware of it!
Some of them are quite clued in, and this is what they thought. Riya V. Anandwalareports.

Komolika Guha- Yes, I am absolutely aware of this issue. I guess they made a big blunder by letting the whole issue out in public. They could have settled they matter between the board and the member itself. I am saying this for the simple reason that people won't know what is right and what is wrong. They definitely shouldn't have brought out the topic in public. I am a complete dada follower and I don't really know how he has played till date.

Rohit Roy- Yes I am aware of the issue. And I feel both are equally right and both are wrong Ganguly is going through a lean patch and Craig shouldn'thave done something of this sort which would harm the morale of the captain in this way. It affects the entire team.

Anupam Bhattacharya- I think Saurav is right! This is about the Indian cricket team and their condition which is not comparable to the Austrailian one. Saurav being the captain has given enough results on top of the order. Even the members are aware of this fact and are happy about his leadership. They have given above 50% result, though its not like that of Austrailian team which hits 70 to 80%, but that's no way bad. He is an aggressive captain and his instincts are tremendous. He has proved himself and is one of the successful Indian captains in the history. We never see how many times we have reached the finals and always go for the negative aspect of every issue. I follow cricket as a religion and I am of this viewpoint because of that not because I am a Bengali.

Sushmita Mukherjee- I am very much aware of this happening. I believe in the fact that when some one is given the job, one must respect that. There are to aspects to it. No doubt that Saurav is fantastic at his job, but whatever Chappel's decision is, it must be valued. This always happen, though its an unfortunate choice but still, there is a level of being perfect. One has to give way to new players and the most levelheaded thing is to surrender.

Rupali Ganguly - I am not really sure about anything. I am ashamed to say that I don't have much knowledge about cricket. So I am no position to comment, but yes I know one thing, that Saurav and me share one thing in common and that's our surname, 'Ganguly'.
