She dressed in blue saree, adorned her hair parting with sindoor and kaala teeka and left her room. Today, Daadi was conducting a pooja to improve Gauri patri, so shouldn't the REAL bahu of the house be present? She smiled as she saw Yug exiting his room, wearing a blue shirt. He was busy with his mobile and she was busing ogling her husband.
So lost was she, that she didn't realize when he stopped walking and turned. She continued walking and dashed into him. He held her waist to ensure that she doesn't fall. She held his shoulders by mistake. He looked at her. Dressed in blue saree, and nothing but silver earrings to match with, sindoor and mangalsutra added to her beauty, she looked gorgeous.
Yes, he had been ignoring her for past two days, making sure that she couldn't even see his shadow but he wanted to see her, wanted to be in her arms. When he had seen her in saree at Jha's, he had tried to ignore her presence, but the innocent beauty would gather his attention, giving him nothing but pain and at the same time Hope.
Kali came out of her trance and moved away from him. Not that she wanted to go away, but she knew if he had been close to her, without believing their truth, he would hurt himself emotionally. She walked away, but when she reached the ground floor, she looked up at him and made a puppy face. He didn't realize, but he smiled, smiled after 2 days... Smiled at the reason of his life...
She stood near Gauri, in the dining room, who ignored her. This wasn't new to her, but was startled when Chulbuli said, "Humari bahu se zyaada khoobsurat toh uska kaala teeka lagta hai, Samjhe ki Samjhaaye?" Daadi looked at her angrily and she stood mum. Kali couldn't help but smile.
Daadi- Bahu, aaj tumhe vrat rakhna hai...kaadha upvaas...sirf paani peena, Aur shaam ko hawan karenge tumhare shudhikaran ka, bhuji?
Gauri looked at her in shock, while Kali nodded to greet Raghu, who entered the dining room. Suddenly the door bell rang. The maid opened it, and came back to tell that the Pandit had arrived. Gauri, Kali and Daadi and Chulbuli went to living room, to welcome the priest.
Daadi- Aayiye Panditji...Swaagat hai...
They settled down, while Kali stood near the sofa. Yug came down, and was about to walk to the main door, when Daadi called out to him.
Daadi- Arrey bachua, tanik idhar aao...
Yug went and stood near his grandmother.
Daadi-Panditji, yeh humara pota, Yug (Yug joined his hands to greet him) Iski shaadi hui hai, aur uske baad isko chot pe chot aayi hai... humari Bahu ka kaala teeka ghar aane se sab waapas jaisa ho gaya hai, phir bhi agar koi veedhi bachi ho toh...
Pandit nodded and looked at Yug and Gauri's patri...
Pandit- Chaudhrayinji, aapne apne pote ki shaadi itni kharab patri waali ladki ke saath kaise ki? Khair, ek rasta hai, aaj ki pooja jab chal rahi ho, toh Yug ki suraksha ke liye, kisi acchi patri waale insaan ke haaton, Maa Kaali ke charan mein pooja ki jaaye, toh shaayad Yug-Gauri ki zindagi mein shaanti aayegi... Yeh pooja shaam tak khatam ho jaayegi...kyunki hawan bhi karwaane padega...
Yug- (annoyed) Kya bakwaas hai yeh?
Daadi took no notice of him, but looked at Kali, who was fidgeting with her saree pallu.
Daadi- E ladki, jaake taiyaar ho jaao...
Kali looked up, confused.
Daadi- Yug ke saath, pahadi waale mandir jaake, pooja karo...
Kali immediately looked at Yug, who was looking at her in shock.
Yug- (opposing) Nahi Daadi...
Daadi- Ek baar maine keh diya, so diya...Pati khoye hai apna...Hawa mein baat nahi kar rahe...
Gauri tried to speak, but Daadi looked at her angrily.
Daadi- Aur neela kapda mat pehno, Yug ki Raashi ko neela kapde se khatra rehta hai...
Kali stood there, confused what to do, when Daadi called her name loudly. Startled, she walked upstairs, followed by Yug. She opened her cupboard and looked at her sarees, when he eyes fell on a box. She picked it up and caressed it, with tears in her eye.
Yug had been trying to convince Daadi, but she was adamant. He felt Kali's presence, so turned to look at her. He couldn't move his eyes from her. She was wearing the pink saree he had gifted her when she had decided to fight against superstitions. She had refused to wear it then, and now she was wearing it. She was looking exquisite, because, she had teamed the saree with gold necklace, earring and the signs of a suhagan-sindoor and mangalsutra. He didn't fail to notice, that she was wearing the bangles and anklets he had gifted her.
Daadi- Yug, Kaali...nastha karke niklo jaldise... raat se pehle ghar wapas pahuchna hai...
Kali nodded and took her seat, but Yug didn't move. He was still staring at Kali. He felt a touch on his shoulder, so came out of his trance. It was Gauri. Before she could speak, he took his seat. Kali didn't touch the food.
Raghu- Kya hua beta? Khaana kyun nahi khaa rahi ho?
Kali- Woh mera aaj vrat hai, hum har Thursday ko vrat rakhte hai...shaam ko hi kuch khaayenge...
Raghu-Par beta, apne kal bhi dinner thikh se nahi kiya tha, and u have to travel a long distance.
Kali- Travelling ki kya baat hai, car mein jaaungi, car mein aaungi...I'll be fine...
She smiled. Raghu understood that she won't budge, sighed and continued reading the newspaper.
In a few minutes, they walked out of the house. Yug didn't' bother to open the door for her, which hurt her, so she opened it herslef and sat. She looked at him, hoping he'll close the door, but when that didn't happen, she did it herslef. Yug noticed that saree pallu hanging out of the car and sighed. He looked at her, but she was lost in her own world.
Yug-(muttering to himself) kabhi nahi sudhregi yeh...
He opened the door. Kali looked at him. He signed at the pallu through his eyes. Kali face palmed and adjusted the pallu. Yug sighed and closed the door. He then sat in the car and drove off to the temple.
The Pandit guided Kali through the pooja, while Yug helped her. Yug was surprised to see devotion and love in her eyes. She didn't make a single mistake throughout the pooja. But the pooja was too long and they finished it by 6 in the evening. They bid the Pandit a good bye and left
