No show for Rati

Ranjib Mazumder

Rati Agnihotri's experience of working in daily shows does not seem to be a pleasant one. Rati had agreed to play

Waiting for Godot? Rati Agnihotri

Apurva Agnihotri's mother in Kaajjal Sabbki Aankhon Mein Basi on condition that she will play a prominent role in the daily show. However, the show has been on air for almost two months but Rati's character is far from being a prominent one.

"Rati has been getting good offers from every production house including Balaji. But, she was never interested in television, so she continued to reject all those offers. She accepted Kaajjal, as the production house (Twenty Twenty Television) had promised her a prominent role in the serial. However, more than one-and-a-half months have passed, and she still is not a significant part of the show. In daily soaps, out of sight is out of mind. The storyline in the serial too is changing drastically from what it was earlier and the production house does not seem too keen on developing her track," says a close associate of Rati from the production house.

Rati says, "I accepted the serial as I liked the script. The serial is currently concentrating on the romantic track between Apurva (Dev Pratap Singh) and Surveen Chawla (Kaajjal). Although my character has not been developed as yet, I am sure that it will soon play a significant role in the show. As I am not shooting daily for Kaajjal, I have kept myself busy with films, social work, and family."

Rajesh Pavitran, COO, Twenty Twenty Television, explains, "The show is a love story and it has a certain format. The track is going to open up in the future where other characters will also play an important role. Rati and I are very clear about how the story and the characters will proceed. I don't think Rati has a minuscule role in the story. Her character is a prominent one and that's the reason why we have spent big money to get her in the show."

A hopeful Rati adds, "Films have always been a priority. The reason behind choosing Kaajjal was the strength of my character in the show. I guess this is how television works. I am just hoping that something good will happen to my character in the future."

TV production houses have now become factories where they keep delivering the same kind of product day in and day out. It appears like most writers opt for old Hindi film DVDs to work on their story tracks. Actors on the other hand are mere tools who blurt out lines and mechanically play their parts. But what if the main protagonist falls sick or some unfortunate situation occurs in his life? How do our experts deal with these kind of unforeseen situations owing to which actors miss the shoots?

"The ambience, facilities, comfort level and hygiene is very important for the unit members. We have appointed two doctors who are available day and night for them. They are just five minutes away from our main set. If the situation is very bad then we can't do anything. Ultimately we have to change the story-line, script and scenes", says Jay Mehta who is currently producing two daily soaps, Sindoor-Tere Naam Ka and Solhahh Singaar. Another producer Sheel Kumar who has Mamta and Ek Ladki Anjaani Si on air feels that no matter what the situation is, the product has to be delivered. "To achieve that target, a lot of people have to go through stress. The work load is very intense," says Sheel Kumar adding that co-operation between unit members can help resolve such problems.

"If one person is missing for an episode or so we can manage. It doesn't affect the TRPs. But the fluctuation is very minute. The situation becomes difficult when the period of his absence extends to a month or so. Then we have to think of replacing the artist," comments Rajesh Pavitran who is currently associated with Kaajjal as the chief operative officer. The lead heroine of Kaajjal, Surveen Chawla was absent for a couple of days owing to a family function in her hometown and a brief illness. "It is a difficult situation. Subtle changes have to be worked out in the script at the last moment. It does affect the basic story flow which had been discussed earlier," he says.

Are the writers hit the hardest? "We are presently facing this problem with Saloni (Rajshri Thakur) being very ill. She is not even able to stand up on her feet. If one falls ill then the whole unit suffers. We have to make last minute changes in the screenplay, happen", says Usha Dixit, who is the dialogue writer for Saat Phere. But don't the TRPs of the show get affected by these last minute changes? "Viewers need drama. If the drama is intense and interesting than the episode can hold. I don't think much suffers if your main protagonist is missing for an episode or two," adds Usha. On the other hand producers like Sheel Kumar expectthe channel to deal with such issues.

"TRPs, marketing and other things are for the channel to look upon. It's a very difficult job to run a channel. They have to keep in mind the viewer ship of their serials. The storyline and TRPs do get a little affected. But the writers and the channel creative team can minimise the effect by making the screenplay interesting," says Sheel Kumar. The dialogue writer is the one who gives the finishing touches to the script before it reaches its ultimate destination. Isn't it difficult for them to write dialogues at the last minute?

"You think a lot can be played with the screenplay in terms of dialogues but you hardly have time to incorporate all the things in such a short period of time. Definitely the creativity suffers because of this situation," comments Usha Dixit. In the midst of the hectic TV schedules it is impossible to avoid such situations. But can't the industry be much more organised so that such situations are minimised? Rajesh Pavitran sounds very positive and optimistic. "It used to be very organised once upon a time. If there's a bank of screenplays it becomes easier for the director to execute the scenes," he says.

Usha Dixit contradicts Rajesh Pavitran and feels that it's not possible to build a screenplay bank. "There's a lot of competition and the channel has to see whether the particular track is working or not. If the channel and the production house start thinking like wise we can keep a check on the problems and solve them," says Usha. (Sampurn)

Manish's TV comeback
After Hours Correspondent
Tuesday, November 21, 2006 19:39 IST

After playing a ruffian loverboy on 'Paraya Dhan', the actor will be seen in a different avatar

Returning after a nine month long sabbatical actor Manish Goyal says his role in 'Kaajjal' (Sony) will be diametrically opposite to that of the suave father he played in his latter days in 'Bhabhi' (Star Plus). "I have broken away from the father image of 'Bhabhi' and tried something different in 'Paraya Dhan'. And, I'm now about to take on a role that is completely different from all the earlier roles I have essayed," says the enthused actor.

Although his role in 'Kaajjal' will be restricted to around 50 episodes, he will provide the crucial angle in the love story between the two lead actors in the serial played by Surveen Chawla and Apurva Agnihotri. "I will be playing a silent, passionate, honest and nice person," is how Manish describes the character.

The actor starts shooting from December. "This is the first time that I will be playing my own age," laughs the actor, who received varied reactions for his stubbled ruffian look in 'Paraya Dhan' (Star One). Manish, along with wife Poonam, will also be hosting the semi-finals of 'Nach Baliye2' (Star One), and he is excited.

"My participation in 'Nach Baliye' changed the course of my career, and it opened up new facets of my personality," he says. Over the last one year, Manish has performed at several awards shows including dancing with Malaika Arora on 'Nach Baliye' recently.

Simply stated: No Kaajjal

Unhappy: Simple Kaul
Simple Kaul
is ready to quit Sony's Kaajjal. Simple (who plays Nikki) has given a notice to the producers K Sera Sera regarding this matter.

There are two reasons why Simple does not wish to continue with the show. Firstly, she doesn't get along with her co-actor Shabnam (who plays Paris and secondly the actress is unhappy with her role.

Says a source, "Simple is definitely unhappy about her role, but the main reason why she wishes to quit, is Shabnam. Both keep accusing one another that they copy each other's style of acting. Simple is very uncomfortable in Shabnam's presence. In turn, her performance also gets affected adversely and she is not happy about it."

No hostility

Simple, too, confirms she wants to drop out. She has told the producers to look for her replacement and relieve her as soon as possible.
But she chose to underplay her friction with Shabnam by saying, "Shabnam and I share the same make-up room.

There is no animosity between us. It's just that I feel both of us play RJs and have similar roles. Therefore, I have all the scenes with her. That leaves me with very little to register my individuality. Plus I was promised something, which looked meatier than it turned out to be. I am not enjoying the show."

Shabnam (famous for her receptionist's role in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin) too was not vocal about the fact that all's not well between Simple and her but added a line, which was suggestive enough. "I think Simple finds my role more overpowering than her."

On date, Simple is also doing Manish Goswami's Aisa Des Hai Mera (Sony).

Simple quits Kaajal on Sony

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

Simple Kaul, known for her role as Niki in Sony Television's Kaajal had decided to quit the serial. She had also given a notice to the producers K Sera Sera and has asked them to find a replacement.

Though one cannot be sure why Nikki wishes to discontinue with the show, it is presumed that she is upset with her co-star Shabnam, who plays Paris in the serial. According to a leading website, Nikki and Shabnam keep accusing each other for copying each other's style of acting.

Also, Nikki said that the role she was offered sounded meatier than what it has eventually turned out to be.

Meanwhile, Simple will be seen in Manish Goswami's serial 'Aisa Des Hai Mera' on Sony.

Actress Rati Agnihotri likes challenges. She took up Sony's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa despite a severe back problem, but that didn't deter her from giving her best. She didn't win the contest, but got accolades from her fans. Making her TV debut, Rati is acting as Apoorva Agnihotri's mother in Kaajjal — Sabbki Aankhon Mein Basi on Sony. Speaking about what made her accept this role, she says, "I play a businesswoman Nayantara Pratap Singh.

She lost her husband when she was pregnant with her youngest son, Dev (Apoorva). Having shifted to Mumbai, she started a small venture that produced packaged foods. Twenty years later, she is a well-respected businesswoman. But her relationship with her son is strained. It appears as though he hates his mother. But there is a reason. More will unfold in the coming episodes as there are lots of twists and turns in the serial."

She adds, "Nayantara is a very strong woman. I believe in the character. Also it's not a run-of-the-mill role. She demands respect and she is holding the family together." As to what difference she finds in films and TV, Rati says, "Television is new to me. Yes, there is a vast difference between the two. I am still learning and television keeps me on my toes as we have to always meet deadlines."

What about her brief stint with Jhalak... any regrets? Rati says, "It was a fantastic journey with Jhalak... I am so glad I took it up." Besides acting, Rati practices Reiki and devotes time to spreading awareness about social causes like AIDS and cancer. She is also an aromatherapist and does rock sculpting, candle-making and stain-glass painting.

How does she do so much? An excited Rati says, "I like to keep myself active. I am a creative person by nature. Also my social causes keep me grounded as it is a reality check for me." Interestingly, one of her aims in life is to establish an institute of holistic living. Rati says, "I believe in holistic living and I want to pass on a little of what I have learnt to people. Our lives have become very hectic and I feel that our country which has given Ayurveda to the world, can also be a source of help to us." She concludes, "Now that TV takes up much of my time, I am learning how to strike a balance. After all, hard work has never killed anyone."

FACE-2-FACE

"I don't wish to plan my future"

-Surveen Chawla

It is her first lead role on television and Surveen Chawla is naturally excited. She plays Kaajal in the Sony serial of the same name. With two-and-a-half years in the industry, Chawla, who has had no formal training in acting, has done quite well for herself with two serials and one title role...

Tell us something about your background?
I hail from Chandigarh. Till class 10th I wanted to take up medicine, but I took up commerce in 12th instead and ended up graduating in arts and mass communication.

Do you have a filmy background and if no how did your parents react when you first told them that you wanted to act?
No, I don't come from a filmy family initially my family was not at all supportive when I told them that I wanted to move to Mumbai and act. I must say that it was a shock for them when they came to know of this. It was only during the last few days before shifting Mumbai that they decided to stand by my decision.

How did this serial thing happen?
I had been in Mumbai for hardly four days when one of uncles informed me about the auditions going on at Balaji. I went there very hesitantly and two days later I got a call saying that I had been selected to play the role of Charu in Kahiin To Hoga.

Tell us something about Kasautii Zindagi Kay happen?
I would say courtesy Kahiin To Hoga's role I bagged Kasak's role in Kasautii Zindagi Kay, it was as a part of generation gap. The producers wanted me to play the new Prerna. But later, the casting went haywire and it didn't work out and my character was sent to the US.

Do you connect more with your role of Charu in Kahiin To Hoga or your role in Kasautii Zindagi Kay?
Kasautii's role may have been brief but it brought with it a lot of controversy. Kahiin To Hoga on other hand has got me all the fame and the accolades. In fact I fell in love with Charu and gave my 200% to the role. I especially loved it during the Akshat and Charu track. Because the chemistry was really happening and I used to feel nice watching these scenes.

How did you feel when you had to miss out doing a soap commercial with Aishwarya Rai?

Yes, they do matter but I was never dejected about it because there is a lot to come in life, and this hit and miss thing really keeps your drive going on. I was quite upset but I have moved on.

So what's this thing with Chaitanya? Are you two seeing each other? Or you are still in the denial mode?
First of all, I am a very simple but a modern girl and, as you said, if I were to see someone, I wouldn't deny it. I would rather be an open book. As far as Chaitanya and I are concerned, we are good friends. I am not like that (in the sense of denying having a boy friend) so I won't know. In fact, I also keep wondering why do they (girls usually) deny it.

What's your future plans, beyond TV?
At the moment, none because I don't wish to plan my future.

Finally, Surveen bags a lead role!

She was part of the Balaji camp with 'Kahiin To Hoga' and 'Kasautii Zindagi Kay' (Star Plus) till she took a break because she realised that she was "doing the same role in all the shows.

" Her character was killed in 'Kasautii…' while the rumour mill was abuzz that she was ousted from the show because she was becoming more popular than the protagonist Aamna Shareef. Brushing aside all speculations, Surveen Chawla reveals that she took a break because she wanted to do something different.

"I loved my character in 'Kahiin…' and the script demanded that my character should end. Rest are all rumours," she says. Surveen says that she is quite excited to be part of 'Kaajjal' (Sony). Here, Surveen will be seen as a radio jockey. She says, "I actually did not have to make any effort to get into the role of 'Kaajjal'. I identify completely with the character." So is she a follower of 'Gannu bhaiya' (Lord Ganesh) as she portrays in the show? "I respect all religion," she smiles. Talking about her chemistry with Apoorva, Surveen says, "I haven't worked with him and do not know him personally. But I guess we look good and the pair looks fresh on-screen," she ends.

Stop laughing, damn it!

Apoorva Agnihotri had to lift and twirl Surveen Chawla, who weighs 56 kgs, 15 times for a romantic scene. Surveen goofed up every take by laughing.

Lift karade: Apoorva Agnihotri and Surveen Chawla in Kaajjal...

Recently Apoorva Agnihotri found out that shooting a romantic scene is back-breaking job. The actor had to lift and twirl his heroine, Surveen Chawla, who weighs 56 kgs, for as many as 15 retakes while shooting a romantic rain sequence for Kaajjal Sabbki AnkhonMein Basi!

The actor was especially miffed because Surveen kept goofing up take after take, simply by laughing mid-shot when she was required to be intensely romantic. No skin off her back, we guess, since it was Apurva who had to do all the heaving and ho-ing.

A source in the production house said, "It was a romantic scene where both of them were supposed to shoot in the rain. They were completely drenched and since the shot just wasn't getting okayed, Apurva had to lift Surveen up several times. Anyway, Apoorva was not in a good mood that day. The scene required some intense moments between them, yet Surveen continued to laugh all through. This really got the poor chap irritated."

When contacted, Surveen said, "Yes, Apoorva was a bit irritated as he had to lift me up 15 times! No doubt he had a really tough time lifting me up, as I weigh not less than 56 kilos. What's more, the rather long scene had to be shot from various angles, so it took all the more long to get it perfect."

Was Apoorva angry? "He was not furious, or anything, but yes, he did get a little irritated because he had to lift me up several times and he was tired. I am always at ease while shooting. I enjoy myself and laugh a lot on the sets," she replied. Obviously, Apoorva Agnihotri didn't share the joke with her this time.

The actor was not available for comment.

Apoorva did get a little irritated because he had to lift me up several times and he was tired. I am always at ease while shooting. I enjoy myself and laugh a lot on the sets–Surveen
