Part 1

The scene starts w/ everyone present shocked at the news that Jyoti has been given a divorce notice. KK orders Sushma to read it and find out the pretext on which Pankaj is demanding a divorce. Sushma tells him that he's put in a litany of charges - she's too ashamed to repeat it. Padma too asks for it. Sushma reads the notice that essentially says that even though Jyoti & Pankaj's marriage was under the Hindu marriage act, it became known that she had a relationship before marriage which she maintained even months after marriage. It is also Mr Pankaj Vashisth's contention that the baby she is carrying isn't his. Upon observing this character of hers, Mr Pankaj Vashisth has decided to divorce her.

Everybody is shocked, and KK asks her to stop reading. Sushma tells him that that's not all, and that they are even insulting them further - offering an alimony of Rs 5 million in exchange for a divorce. She reads out the statement that despite knowing that the baby in her womb is not his, Mr Pankaj Vashisth has decided to be humane about it and offer her an alimony of Rs 5 million, so that she can live easy. She is under notice that she has to respond to this notification within a month, failing which this case will go to court, in which case, Jyoti and only Jyoti would be responsible. She is being requested to approve the divorce, sign this notice and return it.

Dadi angrily steps up to Sushma, snatches those papers and is about to rip it apart, but Deepu stops her. He tells her that these are legal papers which don't get rendered ineffective just by being torn, and it will be responded to in court. Dadi is crying at the ingratitude of Pankaj, and she says that Pankaj is genuinely blind. Deepu says that Pankaj couldn't have done it, and is about to abuse CM, when he turns to Uday & stops. He apologizes to Uday, but tells him that he has reasons to say anything if he did. He demands to know why Uday didn't try to stop any of this?

Sudha is panting, while Uday tells Sandeep that he knew nothing of this, and it was only today that CM had told him to go there. Sudha backs him up and tells him that Uday was the one person in that house who dared defend Jyoti. Saying this, she is gasping for breath, and the others take her and seat her. Jyoti is watching all this totally dazed, and Sushma steps up to her to comfort her.

Padma asks what's next, and KK turns towards her. Dadi tells Jyoti not to respond to that notice, and Padma asks in that case, then what? KK says that even if they drop dead, they won't compromize their honor. They'll sell everything in the house, but they won't allow this charge to stand. He tells Jyoti not to sign it - her father is still alive. Jyoti shrugs off Sushma and walks away. Padma calls, but Jyoti just signals her to let it go.

Uday apologizes to the Sharmas, and Padma asks him why is he the one apologizing? He tells her that he's part of the family that has given them this divorce notice. He is ashamed to even go to that house, but he'll go. Whoever initiated those divorce papers would have to answer his questions. He takes Sudha and asks her to come, and promises to bring her back: Jyoti wants to be alone now, and now is not the time to talk to her. Sudha and Uday both leave.

Part 2

Jyoti is lying down in bed, and in his house, Pankaj is sitting at his balcony. Both are remembering their fond times together, and at the end of this boring scene, Pankaj remembers the occasion during their honeymoon where he thought that Jyoti would get lost in the waves of the sea, and he calls out to her, and she responds. Pankaj stops day-dreaming and shouts out Jyoti, but stops himself.

KK goes up to Padma and asks why is she crying, when she herself wanted Jyoti to divorce. He says that when a person dwells on a single goal, that goal gets fulfilled, and tells her that her wish is now fulfilled. He taunts her that there isn't even a need to ask for alimony - there is an offer of Rs 5 million on the table. Her future is secure, no? (How is it unless and until Jyoti signs the paper, and then too, she has to accept the money, it won't just come to Padma) He asks her why is she still crying, and then speculates that the offer is less than what she wished for. He tells her that she can asks for more if she feels like it. He continues that when Dadi was about to rip up those papers and Deepu snatched it, KK was observing Padma. He then more seriously grabs Padma's face, turns it towards him and says that while he is alive, nothing will happen against Jyoti's wishes. He tells her that if she pressurizes Jyoti to accept the divorce, there won't be one, but two divorces in that house. Padma gets up and walks out of there.

At the Vashisth mansion, CM tells Uday that he is responsible for everything that's happening to Jyoti, and along with him, Sudha. If they hadn't married... Uday demands to know what relationship there is b/w their marriage and Jyoti's divorce? CM tells them that after he rejected the proposal of Minal's FIL, does he have any idea of what happened to that girl? People think that there is a fault w/ that girl, due to which she is still unmarried, and therefore, Minal's FIL has refused to allow her back. When he found out that Jyoti is gone, he wants his friend's daughter Neelam to be Pankaj's 2nd wife. Uday & Sudha are startled to hear this.

Part 3

CM continues that Kesav-ji has told her that once this marriage happened, he'd allow Minal back home. Uday tells her that all this is completely wrong, and CM tells him that she doesn't even know whether to acknowledge him as her son or not: he isn't remotely concerned about his sister, nor his brother, but just his Jyoti bhabi? Uday tells her that he is concerned about Pankaj, which is why he is talking to her, but that this is a misunderstanding that Pankaj is under which will be cleared after a few days. He tells CM that Pankaj still loves Jyoti, but CM tells him that he hates her. She asks Uday whether he thinks she is driving all this? She tells Uday very clearly that Pankaj's wishes are very much represented in all of this. Turning to Sudha, she tells her that Pankaj is the one who wants a divorce from Jyoti, so that he can marry Neelam (if that's the case, why not include that too in the legal notice? Is CM afraid of the rest of the family knowing?) Both Uday & Sudha are shocked to hear all this.

Sudha turns and runs away to her room, and Uday tells her that this is nothing short of pimping: Minal's FIL could have been persuaded to take another path. The truth was that she never accepted Jyoti bhabi in this family, and as soon as she got the opportunity, she... CM congratulates him and tells him that finally, he's recognized his mom, and she doesn't know whether to laud him or slap him. Uday turns and leaves.

Uday goes into his room and sees Sudha emptying her medicine cabinet, and demands to know what she's doing. She tells him that she told him that their marrying would only hurt other people, and blames herself for not going w/ her original instincts. She blames herself for being the cause of Pankaj having to marry again: had Uday married his mom's choice, then Pankaj wouldn't have had to marry again and Jyoti didi wouldn't have had to leave him (hey, but Jyoti-didi would still have been kicked out and divorced: it was getting rid of Jyoti that was upmost on CM's mind. How would you not marrying Uday have altered what Brij did later?) Blaming herself, she says she has no right to live. Uday tries to stop her, but she shouts at him, and turning around, empties a bottle of pills into her mouth. A horrified Uday looks on as the episode ends.

Comments

The first part was just KK being his emotional self as usual - sometimes, he seems to be the most effeminate member of this family. All that stuff about honor notwithstanding, how on earth does he plan to contest this? A better option would have been to prepare a divorce paper on Jyoti's behalf accusing her in-laws of ill-treating her, and making that the grounds for a divorce without alimony. The second scene wasted too much time on Jyoti and Pankaj reminiscing about their love: please, let it go already!!

I liked KK going to Padma and reading her the riot act that if she tries to force Jyoti to accept the divorce, then Padma too would be divorced. Why didn't he do this that night when he first discovered Padma's shenanigans? Had he done that then, Jyoti may have remained. This threat of KK is too little, too late. KK should have divorced Padma at least a year and a half back: reason he didn't is that he's a parasite on her, since the house wouldn't run w/o Padma working. But really, Padma deserves the kind of divorce that Jyoti is being offered.

I liked the confrontation b/w Uday & CM, and I just wish that he'd respond in kind: when CM tells him that she's ashamed to call him her son, he should have told her that the feeling was mutual. I'm however glad that he told her that what she was doing was nothing short of pimping Pankaj. The only thing in CM's favor was when she pointed out how Uday's behavior affected the fortunes of Neelam: she could have improved that by saying that if he had accepted her offer to let him marry Sudha in lieu of her leaving, then Minal too would have been unaffected by all this. I also wish Uday had confronted her and told her that he was not responsible for Neelam in the sense that had CM stopped all her moves the moment she saw him and Sudha in the temple, Minal would still be welcome at her sasural, and besides, what was she doing here so many months after Bhai-duj?

I think it's high time that Sudha develops her spine - she's been a shrinking violet long enough, and she needs to recognize her rights and stand up for them, the way she did w/ Minal a few weeks ago. This suicide attempt was stupid. But if CM has her way and Pankaj persists in going ahead w/ the divorce, Uday should start a process of separation from the family and move out w/ Sudha. Let's see whether the Vashisth family can tolerate a family feud, which is bound to spill into the media pages.

I think that if Uday and Sudha go back tomorrow (I'm assuming that Uday will manage to slap her and knock off those pills from her mouth) and tell the Sharmas that CM is pimping Pankaj to Neelam, then Jyoti will voluntarily sign this divorce just so that Minal can go back home. That might be the trigger that enables Jyoti to prove her loyalty to her sasural, but if she goes that route, she needs to be explicit and make clear that that's what she's doing.

Episode rating: 👎🏼
👎🏼👎🏼 (Only high points were KK threatening to divorce Padma, and Uday confronting CM and telling her that she was pimping Pankaj)
