Chapter 7: Part I- Fear Devil’s wrath.....

The preparations for Jalal’s army to march back to Agra were almost ready. It had been a week since Abdul and his lieutenants had left for intels on Sharifúd’din and Adham Khan but no one had returned yet. Jalal was waiting for them to join in. The place was taking a toll on his ability to think clearly. He had to leave the place, the sight of Amer was too tormenting. His mind needed some space, fresh air and perspective to figure out a way to trace her back. At the same time, the matters of political importance couldn’t be kept due for long while he remains stuck there and the turmoil at the borders of Mewat and Malwa had to be dealt well before they took any shape of ugly familial rebellion.

Jalal was immersed in these thoughts when suddenly the guard informed that Hidayat Bashir was standing out, seeking king’s permission to a private meeting, Jalal nodded and Hidayat Bashir marched in.

He was sweating profusely, Jalal could tell the man was outta breath and almost assured of, that the rumours about Malwa were true.

Hidayat: Glory to the king!

Jalal raised his gaze, to listen to what Hidayar Bashir had to say.

Hidayat: My king, Adham Khan has proclaimed himself the reigning Nawab of Malwa. The situation is horrible there. The army is wrecking horrors beyond tale on the common masses. He has held captive the women of former Nawab, the coward who fled the palace leaving behind his entire harem at the mercy of a brute.

Adham’s men are raiding the folks of the city, adding the loots to Nawab’s treasure that which he has declared as his. I also came to know that he has even shook hands with the cross-border Uzbek and Afghan tribes offering them money in return of their services. These are the same barbaric tribes that we drove off last year to safeguard the lives of our people at the border of Uzbekistan and Hind. The situation is beyond control and hideously horrible.

Jalal closed his eyes. This was it, the call for another battle, that too against someone of your own. The devilish desire to crush the head of the serpent, Jalal himself had been feeding for so long, took a roll in his heart. At some other point he might have given a thought about how to deal with the situation, but at the moment his frustation found a spot to get a relief.

Jalal: We’re marching to Malwa. Prepare. Send words to Abdul, “we meet at Malwa”.

The deathly chill of his voice froze Hidayat’s heart. He wasn’t expecting the king himself to make a move. Any usual circumstance, Jalal would send a part of his batallion with one of his loyal lieutenants to deal with any rebellion as such, but this time Jalal would be leading the march. Hidayat bowed and left without uttering a word knowing that there was no escape for the crook (Adham) from the wrath of devil (Jalal) himself.

Somewhere, at the outskirts of Nagaur, Abdul was impatiently waiting for Chugtai Khan. He had collected ample evidence. The rumours were true, Sharif’ud’din had been insanely savage and his reign nowhere instated the principles of Mogul rule or Jalal’s vision. His men wouldn’t even address Jalal’ud’din as their king, and majority of them didn’t even seem to be trained military personals rather they were more like men paid to kill at their employers command. Abdul was absolutely sure something sinister as hell was running into that serpent’s head and he had to know that.

Breaking the trail of thoughts, Chugtai Khan entered his tent.

Abdul: God! Where have you been Chugtai Khan? I’ve been waiting for you since past three days. Do you have any idea how crucial the situation is? I’ve to get back to Jalal at earliest, with every possible details about this wretched man.

Chugtai Khan: I’m sorry brother. You know how hard it is to get near that Sharif’ud’din. He wouldn’t allow anyone loyal to the king, even close to his palace.

Abdul: Did you get the intel? What is he planning?

Chugtai Khan: Yes! I handed over the bodies of our soldiers and cracked one of the relative of a soldier who died while attacking our king. He serves at the palace. You wouldn’t believe what that evil is up to.

He is planning to attack Amer in the span of another 24 hrs. He has disregarded the king’s official decree of “No military actions” and neutralized all the official summons. The army of his savage men are at discretion to act as oppressive as required. They’re assembling at the borders to invade the territory of Amer, as I speak.

Abdul: Why would he do that? I understand his hatred for Jalal, but what’s the rush to attack within such a short span?

Chugtai Khan: I heard he is insanely after the princess of Amer, and the Rajputs would be distracted in their festive season, that would provide him the best window of opportunity to strike. Rajputs are resilient but given the fact what an evil trickster Sharif’ud’din is, I’m quite worried.

We haven’t ever fought them, this would meddle with political balance. Attacking Amer might instigate the entire Rajputana against the Moguls.

Abdul: What a fool? He’s gonna bring disaster for Jalal. I need to tell Jalal. Sharif’ud’din needs to be stopped. Jalal has no intentions to touch Rajpuatana atleast for now, especially Amer, God knows for what reasons. Why suddenly, so much interest in the Ameri princess?

Chugtai Khan: I don’t know, all I’ve heard is she a real gem, beauty, wit, valor, loyalty all in one mould. People say any sane man would kill for the charm of her, and this Sharif’ud’din is a lecherous lunatic, what would you expect of him?

Besides, we need to take princess Banoo outa that palace. I heard she is not doing well, emotionally drained and physically fragile, the brute is having his ways with her. I fear for her and her child’s safety.

Abdul: My poor sister, Bakshi. God knows what she must have been going through? Jalal might have spared that lunatic’s life for over-ruling his decree, but he is gonna kill him for sure for every single tear that Bakshi would have shed. I need to tell Jalal, and I’m sure the first thing he would ask is to take Bakshi out of Nagaur. Prepare Chugtai Khan, she is in her last term of pregnancy and journey to Agra would sure be difficult for her. As far the attack is concerned, I’m quite sure Jalal would grab that lunatic’s throat, well in time, before he attacks Amer. We still have 24hrs.

Before the two could leave, another lieutenant Mirza Hakim entered Abdul’s tent. He had been sent by Hidayat Bashir to lend Abdul the information that the king had left for Malwa and intends for Abdul to meet him there.

Abdul: What? Jalal left for Malwa?

Mirza: Yes! Hidayat Bashir had some awful intel on Adham Khan. He has proclaimed himself the reigning Nawab there. The insurgency is beyond control. King decided to intervene and handle the mutiny himself. Has asked you and others to join in him at Malwa.

Chugtai Khan: It would take two days to reach Malwa. What do we do to stop this attack at Amer? There is no way, the Shehan’shah’e’hind could march back in time to stop this assault at Amer. This is inevitable.

Abdul (disheartened): I do not know. All I can say is that you stay here Chugtai Khan, make sure Bakshi is safe. Keep the preparations ready for her journey back to Agra, once Jalal comes to fetch her. I shall go to Malwa, let Jalal know the situation.

Until then, I pray Rajputs put up a strong retaliation to this unfortunate and uncalled for, invasion. If that could buy Jalal some time to get back and straighten things up. I’m absolutely sure, for some reasons, I know not what, Jalal had no intentions to spark up Kachwaha- Mogul’s animosity any further.

The image of that embroidered piece of cloth with the Rajputana style of artistry, tied around Jalal’s palm (when he left him last) swept past Abdul’s eye.

There was some unsaid, yet strong connection between Amer and the serenity that cloth brought to his friend’s heart.

The big question was what would be the intensity of the havoc, the dire circumstances- both threat to Amer and well being of his beloved Bakshi would cast on Jalal’s demeanor? All Abdul was praying that whatever be it, nothing should snap Jalal’s older self back again.

What poor Abdul didn’t know that Adham alone had risen the “Devil” up, and Sharif’ud’din would only be igniting the hell’s fury in the process and so "his" wrath.
