A teetotaller working in a bar is rarer and more pious than a teetotaller working in a temple. Isn't it?😆 That makes AMK all the more perfect. Agree. ShriRam is perfection personified. No mortal can match him in principles. One can only measure by what percent of Him he has in himself and AMK is by any measurement an A+ holder.

hayooo please don't call him as ShriRam... and put me in dharam sankat... because that is Mr.Lashy's name and makes it difficult to imagine Akbar then! 🤣

🤣 it should make it all the more easier for you to imagine Akbar. And us to imagine Mr.Lashy in armour and mountedon a black stallion. 😆

I always say you have a knack of making us wonder where we are as you slowly raise the curtains on the scene.

And I always love it when you mention how you felt when you realised where this maze takes you... 🤗

The last person I expected you to start with was Mahendar and how many little details you packed in the introductory scene including his memories of Durga (she still seems top of mind), his dislike to look shabby (or rather his superficial focus on false appearances), and the continued presence of Durga in his thoughts as his wife could only look like her but never be like Durga, who was lost thanks to Khalil. You almost gave a mini-tour of the crooked crevices of his brain in that scene.
Yes... almost like an entire episode of his life has been skipped since we've been busy focusing on the leads ever since Bansi... and now, we enter a new phase of his life so it had to cover up all those missed portions ...
of course, new phase but his crookedness is never meant to go anywhere!😈

And then you smoothly transition to Parnagarh, where we withness the various threads of nuanced thoughts weaving in Harka's minds. The churning (from my prior take) had almost stopped but she seemed to be more worried why it had stopped and that it may return. Things were slipping into a normalcy, which she feared was a mere illusion.
That's what happens when tragedy strikes again and again! Believing that life can be normal takes a while!

I particularly liked the detail of how Akbar had returned the accounts and responsibilities to Harka; a small detail that said a lot.
Thanks dear... 😳

And somewhere, it seemed like life was coming full circle. The horse races that had earlier introduced Harka and Durga to us was back again and as Bindiya said, maybe Harka's long lost spirits were recovering as well with a few giggles and chuckles along the way.
Well noted... it did come a full circle... and it doesn't end there! 😉

And the horse race itself had so many undercurrents of the dynamics of Harka and Akbar's relationship, and what a unique way to bring it to the fore.
- Harka's wish to stay away but curiousity to see what was happening (similar to why she asked the questions in her head earlier about Akbar when she claimed she didn't care to know the answers to them).
Strange are the ways of our mind... especially when it's in conflict with the heart!😎
- Akbar, always at a distance, with a keen awareness of Harka's every move and thought, both during the race and in daily life.
Hai hai!
- Bahadur as the symbol of their times of closeness, loyalty, and trust. Always there, steady and dependable.
Of course... he is like an adopted brother/child to them... call it what you may...❤️
- And then there was Sufi, the white horse, moving like the beautiful poetry of their story that was still incomplete.
The first line👏... take a bow, Divya... moving like the beautiful poetry of their incomplete story!🤗
Was Harka more attracted to the horse or the focused rider later who took him to victory is the question?
You tell me! 😉
- The undercurrents of jealousy as Harka was bothered by two new girls who were eyeing their Mansabdar (now, not sure if there is something more suspicious about this twosome than their admiration for Akbar) or Akbar slightly envious at the attention Sufi was getting from his Sahiba.
They were both envious... Akbar's was more playful... that she chose the horse over the rider...
and Heera's was real jealousy! Like the one AMK had when he first heard Mahendar's name!😛

And who won their mental games at the end of the race? This round at first seemed to have gone to Akbar; but both had won in their own way.
No...they both won in their own ways...
Had AMK not slowed Bahadur down, Heera's calculations would've come a winner
Then again, AMK always knew Bahadur couldn't/shouldn't run at those speeds, so he was the assured winner...😆

And of all of this, the star of this chapter for me was Bahadur. Bahadur had been the steady bond that had always connected Harka and Akbar- from when his own life was being saved to when he had had been with his master through every angst as they set out to save Harka. Bahadur was so cute in how he reached out to Harka and how he insisted on winning for Harka's belief in him and Akbar's affection. And so, I leave my take with the following:
The underlined made me misty-eyed..🤗

No crowd could ever hide you from me
Incomplete I am without your tender care and affection
Only when you look into my eyes you will recognize their honesty and loyalty
Your attention to another gave rise to a seed of envy
With your support, I can take on every race against time and pain
Both Bahadur and AMK... singing it to Heera!🤔

Who am I describing here? Is it one alone? Where is my take 5 (it's there in a few ways)? I felt like having some free form fun with this chapter.
And we all had such fun with you...🤗
What a chapter
Thank you da
Lashy dear; perhaps a bit of fun and games before the miners and Mahendar arrive?
Wait and watch!😈

This one's come a bit late... but I was away for the past 3 days... and the days before that... well, I was fooling around a bit 😆
🤗Thank you for this Divi

Hiding Behind a Stranger
(a novel by Lashy)

How the novel unfolded...( continues from p 14.)

Chapter 26. The Beauty and the Beast..

The capital

...

'But...' Ibrahim spoke up, once the uproar had subdued 'Khalil is fast... and he has a day's head start... how are we going to catch up with him?'

The young man tied his hands behind his back, a wry frown brewing between his brows.

'Remember the lessons I'd taught you on Mongol warfare?'

'Y... yes...' His eyes slowly lighting up, Ibrahim traded glances with the rest of the men. 'Mongol warfare!' So, THAT is how their master planned to achieve this near-impossible feat of catching up with Khalil. Ingenious!

"... each man will have an extra stallion riding beside him... as soon as you feel your horse slowing down due to exhaustion, you'll jump onto the empty horse riding beside you... of course, when that horse slows down again, you hop back on the first horse...' he shrugged 'thus, the horses would need fewer stops for rest...''

Ustaad... your war is OUR war... WE WILL STOP THEM!'

'WE WILL STOP THEM!'

'WE WILL STOP THEM!'

A clearing in the forests

With Gauri by her side, the young lady walked towards the thickets where her people were resting, preparing her mind to carry out a task that was by no means going to be easy. Once in their midst, she brought her pace to a halt, reminding herself to step up the confidence in her voice before addressing them.

'My dear people...'

Before I begin...' Heera tightly laced her fingers together 'I would like to apologise for letting you down... and for all that you've been through lately...'

'Nevertheless, I have another news to share... as planned, most of you will continue travelling onwards to Parnagarh... however... I will be taking a detour towards the capital... accompanied by a small group, of course...'

'I am going to try and barter a deal with the Shehzaade... I hope that he will spare at least some of our lands, fields and homes... but... if... if I don't return in time...'

By this point, the gasps had escalated into exclamations and protests, compelling Heera to bring her speech to a brief halt 'please stay calm... all of you...' she waited for the noises to recede 'I have left instructions with Ratan kakasa and Gauri... I am confident that you will cooperate with them...'

'Now wish me luck, please...'

'May Ma Bhavani be with you...' they wished her in unison.

They were letting go of a feather - their most precious feather - into the unpredictable winds. They could only hope against hope that it would eventually come back to them safe and sound.

The chase...

Having started off on this quest the previous morning, his men had been charging like madmen through forests and towns ever since. Galloping across woods, trotting over trenches, slicing their way through low vines, swerving around sharp branches - all of this, with only a couple of stops in between. They'd thus covered miles and miles of route twice as fast as any good rider would - battling heat, pain, stress, injuries and dangers at every stage.

...

Earlier that evening, inquiries in a nearby town had let them know that a large party of men had just passed by. A party of men who fit the exact description of Khalil and his band of rogues.

So, he WAS on the right track! A couple of hours of rest now and they would resume the chase again. Only a matter of time, before he would catch up with the enemy!

'Yes... only a matter of time...'

'Only a matter of time... but till then, Ai Khuda... please keep her safe'

The forests

After having endlessly travelled from noon that day, the group had become much too weary to keep going. With no strength to carry on till the next town - which was still many Koss away - they'd set up camp in a secluded part of the jungle.
...

The sheer number of horse hooves.

The clinking of sword against shield.

The Urdu slogans being hollered.

She added it all up - these were not bandits. They were soldiers.

But an army? Here? At THIS hour?

'Oh my God!' she gasped 'Please Ma Bhavani let it not... let it not be HIM... let it not be Khalil!'

...

'IDENTIFY yourselves now...' they laughed 'or you men will soon learn why we've kept you alive... it's to watch what we do to your women...'

Their Marwari might have been jumbled, but the message was loud and clear.

...

Khalil still wasn't certain what to make of her attitude! He didn't trust her intentions either. But there was something about her responses. Something about the way she spoke what she spoke. It wasn't haughty. It wasn't timid. It was different. Surprising. And unique.

He had to see this girl for himself.

SNAP! He snapped his fingers at a fellow-soldier, who brought the flame torch close by.

Then, grabbing the veil from her face, he flung it behind her head.

...

It was a moment of utter humiliation for the heiress.

But Heera somehow remained upright. She knew that she was standing in front of a sadist. Collapsing in his presence would only feed his sadism, urging him to mistreat them further. She also knew he was violently aggressive. Acting too rash would only challenge his ego. So, she played it safe. Played it civil. Kept him guessing. That was the only way he'd keep her alive long enough, so she could think of something.

However, she NEEDED to send someone out - in the slim hope that they might get help. Or at least to warn Parnagarh. But, how could she go about setting anyone free when there was no room for escape?

'Horses?'

Suddenly, another fact struck her, drawing her attention towards the hazy outline of one particular horse 'Jiji's Marwari racer'

This was the horse that'd dodged Khalil's attack earlier. What if...

'WHAT WERE YOU LOOKING AT?'

He was becoming intrigued by her motives...

There WAS fear in her hazel eyes. Disgust too. Even hatred. Yet, she was dignified in the way she depicted it. Ladylike. So much so that her reactions didn't offend his ego. Rather, she was challenging him in a way no girl had challenged him so far.

'Mashallah... your sister was a beauty... but YOU are something else altogether!'Well, he was beginning to like it.

( Will continue..)

Absolutely unscrupulous, cunning and contrived and cold -hearted all with capital Cs, puts on a veneer of nobility when he wouldn't mind sinking to any depths to save his skin. In short, a masked hypocrite. 😡 He was awake for an hour admiring her angelic features...really...can this man be true even to his own self!😡😡 Durga's courage must have taunted his ego. And he has satisfied himself with someone resembling her, but is by nature what he would have wanted to reduce Durga to had he married her - unquestioning, obedient, unsuspecting.

Lashy, you have a way with portraying Mahender that brings out his character in actions big and small.👏

And wants to join hands with Khalil to advance his ambitions in spite of knowing what Khalil did to Durga. 😡 Even if she had married him, Durga and Parnagarh would have been his trophies, hardly his love. I just wish he gets killed in the Parnagarh haveli, just beneath Durga's painting in the hallway.😈

Heera was afraid to admit it, but maybe life was returning to relative normalcy.

How touching! For someone who has been through one hardship after another, even normalcy is hard to believe.😭 There is always the looming fear of another thunder.

Heera's refusal to believe, care for or think about Khan Sahib and her disobedient heart that kept hovering over him all the time are making the poor girl highly uneasy. Her first laughter since perhaps the stable episode was like the first rays of sunshine after a dark night. Heera with her doubts, insecurities, jealousies has all the feelings of a 16 yr old, in addition to her wisdom and efficiency. She is such a darling.😳

And Akbar ShriRam Khan, must have looked so handsome riding on Sufi. RT riding picture was vivid as i imagined the third race.☺️ The very image must have won the heart of many Parnagarhis. 😳

A beautiful chapter.👍🏼

Beautiful review...i so like your choice of words...@underline...very well said and so true...

@bold...i agree there...so what is it he feels for Durga...he is contradictory in everything...

Keep passing such remarks... and be assured, Tejraj... you, your two wives and your children will be homeless again.

If he had married (challenging) Durga, he would have used this stlye of remark to her as well( like he uses with Tejraj)

what you said about Heera is so beautiful...

So unfair of me to point out few lines, when i agree with and admire every word of your post
