Mahender was true to his character and you have brought it out beautifully Lashy. Absolutely unscrupulous, cunning and contrived and cold -hearted all with capital Cs, puts on a veneer of nobility when he wouldn't mind sinking to any depths to save his skin.

Durga's courage must have taunted his ego. And he has satisfied himself with someone resembling her, but is by nature what he would have wanted to reduce Durga to had he married her - unquestioning, obedient, unsuspecting.

I think the first time he got a taste of what it was to have someone intelligent & spunky challenge him...and he fell for the intoxicating sense of thrill he hoped to get when trying to 'win' over that challenge... he has now lost that opportunity because all other women he's met are akin to lambs... especially his wife..
