Oh, I have read them all, Akka, I meant a re-read after a decade or more. We have Alai Osai too, in bound Kalki extracts. We were then living in Akola, Maharashtra, and the Ananda Vikatan and Kalki used to be mailed to us from Chennai, arriving 4/5 days late. I was too small then to read Ponniyin Selvan and the rest, but my mother collected all of them and had them bound, and I read them in my teens. Somehow, we do not have Sivagamiyin Sabadam and Parthiban Kanavu, I suppose my mother, who had just got married then, had no opportunity of collecting them, so I have them as published books.

Thank you for giving the years of publication for the novels, I had no real idea about them. Anything more you want to tell us about them can be PMed to me, Sandhya, Sri (jayaks02).

I wish there were English translations of these wonderful works, so that they could reach a much wider reading public.

Dear Shyamala,
Thank you for your reply.
I do not remember how many times I have read Kalki's novels PS, SS and Parthiban Kanavu. They are epics. I would recommend that all Tamil - knowing people should read these novels.
PK was the first serial published in the first issue of KALKI magazine which was started by Kalki in 1941. He wrote till 1943, followed by SS from 1944 to1946.His novel on a social theme "Alai Osai" based on the pre Independence struggle which ended with the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, was serialised from 1946 to 1948. PS was published in the Magazine from 1951-1954. SS was a sequel to PK and so you can read SS first so that the suspense is maintained.
I can give more information, but I do not want the other non Tamil members to feel embarrassed that JA forum is being taken over by SS and PS discussion link.
BTW pl read my post in history_geek's " When Akbar Rode a horse ..."

Saraswathi.

Adiana,

I had no idea that you are Tamil! What a wonderful father you have! And I did not know that these novels of Kalki's have been translated as well. That is so good to hear. Did you read them in English?

I'm a Tamil born and brought up in Delhi speaking the language, understanding it's intricacies thanks to a father who loved the language as much as he did his daughter but I never got into learning to read or write the language well. But I had the good fortune to have had PS, SS and PK narrated and even many parts read out as well as I am a huge history and story aficionado. And then read these as translations as well. So though I haven't had the opportunity to have read all in the original Tamil I've read the translations and have had lively discussions with my father who blessed with a photographic memory would even quote passages and dialogues from the original Tamil - these are the best memories of my growing years when I developed my love for the written word. And PS has such wonderful verbal imagery. I'm now planning to get my kids to read them as well.

There are English translations by Indra Neelagam and C.V. Karthik Narayanan available on Amazon India - including a kindle edition of the 1st part of PS.

Yes Shyamala I read them in English. And I was blessed to have such a father who was instrumental in my love for knowledge and introduced me to literature not only English but Tamil and Hindi as well.

That was a double bonanza. Wasn't it? While ArulMozhi was everything that could win your respect Vandiyathevan was everything you could love. Kalki had once said that he had meant to develop the character of Vandiyathevan only to introduce all the other characters, like Paranjothi in SS. Then he had intended ArulMozhi to take over completely like NarsimhaPallavan did and relegate Vandiyathevan to the post of a sidekick.

But Vandiyathevan became so dear to the readers and was loved more than the perfection personified ArulMozhi that Kalki HAD to give him a platform equal to the hero. But ultimately he overshadowed ArulMozhi and came to be called the hero of the novel. 😊

I am a pichi when it comes to Kalki - I can read and write Tamil very well Infact my first 10 years of Schooling in Tamil Medium.

I simply love kalki to death. In 1938, he went to Srilanka and wrote a travelogue. What a wonderful insightful including political commentary included travelogue.

PS is unmatched any day.

I used to feel bad that there were not too much scenes between Vanathi and Raja Raja Chola. But now at the age of 45, I can understand Raja Raja Chola is such a man that one female would not have captured his imagination just like that.

Vandhiya Thevan is a darling. And every year on adi perukku, I remember him. That is the day he starts to travel to come to Thanjavur from Kanchipuram. And the way Kalki describes a growing and rich Chola Kingdom including the magnificient river Cauvery is unparalleled.

I am from Thanjavur and cannot get over this reference. And I went to Arroran temple in Thirvaiyaru when I went 10 years back for Thyagaraja festival. it is a brilliant and awesome temple. Outstanding.

Sorry - Now I cannot talk about JA - My mind is full of Chola Kingdom. 😃 😆

Though a thorough Tamil i grew up in Delhi and other places and have studied Hindi as a second language in school throughout . Of course i could speak Tamil well but wasn't so comfortable reading and writing. But i have heard interesting discussions on PS SS Sandilyans and other classics in my grandmother's place that i started reading them inspite of my limitations and by the end of a few volumes i was very comfortable reading my mother tongue.😃 ( Though i still falter with spellings while writing esp n and l 😕)

True.😊

Vanathi was so uninspiring.😕 i hardly cared. I wanted the story to always revert back to Vandiyathevan and Kundavai. Raja Raja Chola, Akbar, Ashoka, MP are all too large to be captivated and influenced by one female.

Hey! Me too. Adi Perukku always reminds me of PS.

Arroran temple? Is that the Shiva temple in Thirvaiyaru? Been there just once. The Tanjore temple too-just once. In the Tanjore temple i was simply awed imagining the great king who must have walked through the grounds for regular poojas and other functions. Too bad the palace doesn't exist now. (Or does it?)

I want to visit Fatehpur Sikri now and Agra too. Just to have a look at the places the great Shahenshah must have walked and talked. Ela had posted a lot of pics. Esp the DEA gaveme goosepimples. Chittore too is on my list of must visit. And what monuments related to Ashoka apart from his pillar exist now? 🤔

@ Devki wicked wicked wicked !!! 😉😉😉 although as a Jodha lover I concur.

@ Sandhya, FS is a must see but please try to find a recognized guide. I have been there twice ( unfortunately before I had increased my knowledge of the place). The touts that claim they are " govt licensed" tell you some horrific tales. Some of the crap dished out to me at FS and Agra fort was aweful. whats worse they skip some of the lesser known and interesting places from their tour. 😡😡
