My dear Donjas,

Don't give it a thought! In fact, that you disagree with me about something makes for a stimulating change!😉

Now as for the chemistry between Smiley's Ruqaiya and Jalal. To me, it is there because as a jodi, they function as a smooth, well-oiled pair. Jalal is of course carrying 80% of the load, but this Ruqaiya does carry the balance 20%. Which Ruqaiya II failed signally to do. So there was zero chemistry between them, though Rajat's Jalal was as good as he was earlier.

As I wrote in the post, and again to Sandhya above, Smiley's Ruqaiya has no looks to speak of, a voice like a corncrake, and a dialogue delivery as flat as a pancake. I did not associate this with Smiley Suri being a Punjabi, but I noted it nonetheless. Nor can she make her eyes do whatever she wants, which is one of Rajat's strong points. In fact, in conventional terms, she is not a very good actress, plus she is pitted against the likes of Rajat and Ashwini.

Despite all these not inconsiderable failings, and in her simple clothes with no chamak-dhamak, to my mind, Smiley's Ruqaiya still looks every inch the queen. It is there in her body language,in her self-assurance, and the effortless ability to dominate her surroundings. You would have that unlike the screechy, most times fishwife-like Ruqaiya II, this one never raises her voice with the baandis. That is a real lady for you.

With Jalal, she does not let go of her childhood advantage of being the younger of the two, and she treats him accordingly, scolding him without any hesitation. But there is also the quick retreat to affectionate wifeliness : Nahin, hum sambhal lenge! when Jalal wants to pull off the soiled chadar. And again, though I am over-reaching myself, the quick and unaffected counter-apology for having not allowed Maham to speak to Jalal that night.

There is thus both an easy affection and camaraderie between them, but there is also an easy sensuality. It is there mostly in Rajat's eyes, but at least Smiley puts her head on his shoulder as if she belonged there, without striving to keep at least 2 feet between them like you know who!😉

Shall look out for your next set of comments.

Refreshed after having watched a truly Rajatalicious episode today, I am ready to do battle, and unfortunately this time against you.

There is an uncontestable chemistry between Rajat and Smiley, but that is about it. I am not able to decide if this chemistry is because Rajat is so spectacular, in other words is it a two way thing, or are we blinded by Rajat's brilliance. A notable feature of a good actor is, that you cannot tell their local dialect. Look at Rajat and Ashwini, look how they are able to master dialogue delivery to such an extant.

Not so with Smiley, straightaway I am able to tell that this girl is Punjabi. That Punjabiyat seeps through in every word she utters. It is too obvious and thus too irritating.

Another thing, a good actor sinks into the character that, he/she is playing, so much so that you would not know, where Rajat ends and Akbar starts. Not so with Smiley, I can tell she is acting, she makes a valiant effort but unfortunately not good enough.

Want proof, look closely at that scene where she goes to Maham after the court debacle. The conversation was fine, but with the same issues mentioned above, but that is not the unsettling thing. Look at the way she looks back as she walks away, it is too stiff and amateurish, as if she knows she is acting and that knowledge is transmitting to the audience.

I will come back later with more observations on your post, which of course is as stimulating to read as always, please bear with me.

My dear Devki,

Thank you for liking this one so much, and also for a very apposite set of comments. I have highlighted the parts I liked best in blue, and my supplementary comments are in blue italics.

Thanks for another wonderful post.

My Thoughts:

MahamAnga-Hamida Banu-Jalal: Hamida Banu's predicament is very sad. She just
has to swallow all the subtle insults and put downs by MA gracefully without
giving back to her in fear of antagonizing Jalal even further. Jalal is still resentful
towards HB and cannot see beyond it. If MA had true maternal feelings towards
Jalal she would have tried to heal the breach.

You have got to be kidding, my dear! She will be working hard, armed with a stout crowbar, at widening the gap between them even further. I do believe, as I wrote to myviewprem on my last thread, that Maham loves Jalal in her own schizophrenic way, for whatever her plots to overthrow him as the emperor, she never wants him killed. But of course she wants to be the No.1 in your defective trio, and then again, Hamida Banu would be, to her, a threat.

This aside, even a normal woman with a foster child who loves her, would never want the real mother muscling in between them.

Jalal-Rukaiyya: They share a beautiful relationship full of comfort, respect and love. The
camaraderie between the two is that of best buddies. Of course it is pretty
obvious that they have a good physical relationship as well.

But like you said, something is amiss. That is very obvious. In spite of being so close there is a strange kind of distance/formality between them. Of course this does not make the
relationship any less special.

Rukaiyya: She is the undisputed Queen Bee of the harem. Jalal gives her precedence over
all the others in every way. In spite of this I feel that underneath the cool,
calm, confident veneer is a very insecure woman. Yes even at this stage of the
game where she is the unquestioned, unchallenged Emperor's favorite on whom he
bestows all the respect, importance and love. Why else would she say to Jalal that in the harem ki siyaasat she has to make sure that all the other begums know that she is the most chahithi?

Even after the court incident when she comes to the hammam, by her own admission she is there mainly to show the other begums that things are cool between her and Jalal. Why these ostentatious displays of supremacy over others? She is more concerned about how their relationship appears to others than the actual relationship itself.

Now this is a very pertinent point. I have said something on the same lines in my response above to Sandhya. But the curious thing is that she does not hide this from Jalal, as almost all women in her situation would have done. Instead, she seeks a promise that he will never scold her in public. That is a reflection of the camaraderie between them;she does not need to hide even her weaknesses from him.

Jalal's(defective}Trio: His whole and soul depends on these three but I feel for them he is a means to
an end one way or another, big or small.

Bairam Khan: To me he is the most benign of the three. What you see is what you
get. He does not want to let go of his power but he is upfront about it. No games here.

Rukaiyya: She loves Jalal, no question about it but she also loves what Jalal can get for her and that is power. Unbeknownst to him she has this little power tug of war going on with MA to gain an upper hand.

MahamAnga:She is by far the most dangerous. This Grande dame is the personification of deception and viciousness. She not only wants to be the most important in Jalal's life but wants to isolate him from everyone else. She has already pretty much vanquished Hamida Banu and is now in a war with BK on one side and Rukaiyya on the other.

Bairam Khan also wants to isolate Jalal from everyone else, and says so to that Jodhpur kiledaar. So the real tug of war is between these two.As for Hamida Banu, seeing that, no doubt thanks to the subtle conditioning,by Maham, of Jalal's mind against her, she is no opponent at all for Maham! Mare huye ko kya marna?

All I can say is poor Jalal. I feel at this point HB is the only one who loves him for himself.

Hamida loves him the way a Salvation Army preacher loves a sinner. She loves not him, but the reformed character she hopes that he will become some day, undoubtedly with a solid dose of motivation from her. I did not at all like the way in which she described him to Sheikh Salim Chisti the other day, as if he was an irredeemable sinner who was bringing Islam into disrepute. I am sure that whenever she gets a minute with him,she must be preaching at him!

Leaving aside chemistry, over which we will agree to disagree, the notable thing about these early episodes is the adherence by the CV's to a coherent story. They are also able to give more realistic behaviors to our principal characters. That is because, at this stage they still had a lot of leeway regarding ratings.

The sad fact about Hindi TV audience is that you needs things simple. You need in black and white who the heroes and villains are. STAR TV has tried to experiment, there was this fantastic show with Amitabh and Kay Kay, another show with Anil Kapoor. Great shows with excellent production values but they failed on the ratings front. Too sophisticated for the audience.

That is why the mature portrayal of Jalal-Ruqs relationship had to be a fleeting one. It is good that we atleast have something.

As for Smiley, maybe as a fellow Punjabi I am being over sensitive. She definitely has a royal bearing and grace. Over time, with more command on diction and less self consciousness, she could do really well.

Thank you, my dear Harshu, both for liking this one so much and for a very neat set of comments.

Your take on Ruqaiya II, that she was like boiling water 365 days, 24x7, was so funny that I am still laughing. Yes, she was like that to a T, that, and all the rest that you have said here.

Ruqaiya I, by contrast, is a real lady, who never has to raise her voice to be obeyed. If she had been retained, the confrontation between her and Jodha at their first meeting could never have been done😉 in that crudely offensive way.

I think that is why the change of actress was made. They were getting set to reduce Ruqaiya to a commonplace, mean, quarrelsome, abusive vamp, and I am sure this Ruqaiya could never have been squeezed into that mould.

I have a request. Could you please avoid the use of SMS language? I am too old for it and at times I cannot make out what you mean!

Yes and where is your LIKE? Do go across and press that button at once without fail, there is a good girl!😉

What an adorable baby Krishna, my pet! Thank you for sharing him with us - he would give even the most delectable photos of Jalal a run for his money!😉 - and here is wishing you, and the rest of your family a wonderful and yummy Janmashtami.

Do you make the krishna paadams in rice flour paste from the main entrance door to the pooja room? I used to so enjoy making those as a child.

Smiley's Ruqaiya is truly an enigma...not a great face or figure, but so supremely self confident of her lineage & her position in the emperor's life that she does not bother much about her appearance as well...so dignified, so queenly, so royal...it didn't bother me much that the actor enacting Ruqaiya 1 is very limited, esp in dialogue delivery...her body language & interpretation of Ruqaiya's psyche pretty much make up for the short comings...😃
Yes, she loves Jalal...as a friend, as a husband...BUT ABOVE ALL, as THE EMPEROR 😆...she is his friend, his wife. ..BUT ABOVE ALL, she is THE EMPEROR's MALLIKA 😃...n she abso adores the perks that go with it...

Smiley's Ruqaiya is an extremely extremely lovable & intriguing character, despite all limitations of the actor enacting the role...actually, it's only the dialogue delivery which is a problem...else, Smiley has got into the skin of the character so very well...her body language , her walk, her almost narcissist type demeanor...everything makes Ruqaiya an enigma...⭐️

Beautiful post, Aunty...loved it as much as I loved Smiley...how I wish Smiley had stayed back...LT's Ruqaiya didn't go down well with me at all...at times she was intolerable n it was imperative for me to use my ear plugs (probably as much as Kanha himself 😉 )

Khushi my pet,

I am glad you liked this one so much. I too loved Smiley's Ruqaiya, and that is abundantly clear from the post.

Do see my response to Sandhya above, and her beautiful take on the Jalal-Ruqaiya equation. Yours is very interesting too, especially the part in blue, which is spot on.

Harshu27 has described Ruqaiya II very well as being like
boiling water 365 days, 24x7, and she was like that to a T, that and shrewish, screechy, crudely arrogant, and abusive to those under her.

The writer and the director did not want a grey Ruqaiya, they wanted her to be the scheming nanad to match Maham's evil saas for Jodha, the real one, Hamida, being a creature of sugar and spice and a lot of sticky honey as well! 😉Grey characters, well rounded off, do not for high TRPs make, alas!

My dear Donjas,

As for why Ruqaiya II was the way she was, you have got it absolutely right in the part in blue.

As you say, grey characters, well rounded off, do not for high TRPs make, alas!

Sony TV is the graveyard of experimental TV. It was not only Amitabh Bachchan and Anurag Kashyap's Yudh (shortchanged terribly by Sony, with a single 2230-2330 telecast of all 20 episodes and, unbelievably, NO repeats at all! I wrote 20 daily episode analyses in that forum, and had quite a decent readership) but all the Yashraj TV productions limited episodes shows.

Powder, arguably the best serial on the global narcotics trade that I have seen, Kismet, and even the light-hearted Rishta.com and the fantasy serial Seven were presented so inadequately, with very few repeats, all on Sony, that they all failed.Even Kismet, an adaptation (with a proper acknowledgement, of Kane and Abel) which was an excellently scripted and beautifully enacted 2230 hours, half hour daily, failed.

The TV we get is the TV the majority wants. No wonder Ekta's awful Pavitra Rishta was such a 1000+ episode hit!
