Chapter 12
Jodha and Jalal, they both walked towards their house, when they see a lady's back facing them. Jodha looked at Jalal with a worried face, where Jalal just warmly blinked at her, assuring her that nothing will happen...
They walked towards the lady, but Jodha was taking baby steps, not wanting to face the lady. Jalal stops walking, looks back at Jodha who stopped walking a few steps away from Jalal. He signals her to come ahead with him. She then nods her head very innocently and catches up to Jalal.
The lady, who was standing in front of them, facing her back to them, knew that they have arrived, but she didn't bother to turn around and look at them.
In a few second Jodha and Jalal reached right behind the lady.
Suddenly Jodha bends down touching the lady's feet. The lady jerked Jodha and moved herself away from her turning around, facing to them. Jodha was about to fall over since the lady pushed her, Jalal swiftly saves Jodha and yells out;
"WHAT THE HECK DO YOU..."
"I am a Muslim. Not a Hindu, don't you dare touch my feet." The lady said to Jodha, glaring at her, cutting Jalal in between his talk.
Jodha, who was breathing heavily in Jalals arm, as he saved her from falling, staring at the lady who just jerked her off.
"Ammijaan, are you still angry at me?" Asked jodha.
"Do not call me your ammijaan. I am not your ammijaan. I am Jalals ammi." Replied back Hamida Bano, Jalal's mother.
"Please come inside, we will talk inside ammijaan" says jodha inviting her mother-in-law inside the house.
Jalal was fuming all this time, first his mother comes, second she pushes Jodha in this state, and third; she is behaving rudely with Jodha.
Jodha quickly opened the front door while Hamida just stood there glaring at her.
Jodha nods her head at Hamida and Jalal, asking for them to come in.
Hamida walked in the house and looked at the house and was amazed to see her son's house. This was the very first time she had entered her son's house.
They all walked to the lounge room. Jodha asked Hamida to take a seat while she brings something for her to drink and eat.
"Hum yahan kuch khane ya peene ke liye nahin aaye hai. Aur appse toh hummein baat karni hi nahin hai.
Aur Jalal tum, kya saare taleem aur tahseeb bhool gaye ho, jo humne tummhe sikhaya tha? Na salam, na kuch. Agar tum bhool gaye ho, toh hum tummhein yaad dila dete hain, ke hum aap ki ammi hai Jalal. Aur zara hummein yeh batiye aap, ke hum jab aap ko phone pe phone kar rahe the, toh aap hummare kisi bhi phone ya message ka jawaab dena zaroori nahin bhi samjha? Yeh zaroor iss Jodha ne kaha ho ga tum se, ke apni ammijaan ka koi bhi phone ya message ka jawaab mat dena.."
[I am not here to eat or drink something, and I do not want to talk to you.
And you Jalal, have you forgotten all the respects that I have taught you? No greetings nor anything. If you have forgotten, then let me remind you, I am you Ammi, I am your mother, Jalal. And tell me, that when I was continuously calling you, why did you not bother to answer my calls or messages? For sure this Jodha had told you not to answer or reply to your amiijaan's calls and texts.."]
"BAS!" Yelled out jalal to his ammijaan, stopping her from talking on and on.
[STOP!]
"Aap ki problem kya hai? Aap toh hummein beta maane se bhi inkaar karti hai na? Toh phir aaj aap ko iss beta ki yaad kaise aa gayi?"
Jalal yelled back at his mother.
[What is your problem? You yourself had stopped believing me as you son right? Then how come you remembered your son today?]
Hamida was shocked seeing her son talking so disrespectfully to his mother.
Jodha didn't feel too good hearing Jalal yelling at his mother, she quickly put her arms on Jalals broad arm and looked him with a very sad face, trying to stop him from yelling and talking back at his mother. She whispered to her husband;
"Jalal yeh aap kaisi baatein kar rahe hai, yeh aap ki ammijaan hai.."
[Jalal, this is not the way to talk, she is your mother..]
"BAS JODHA" yelled back Jalal, Jodha got scared with the voice tone of Jalals. She slightly jumped a step back, jerking her own hands off Jalals arms.
[STOP JODHA]
She was shocked to see Jalals anger, she has seen him get angry before, but never like this.
Taking another step back quietly, she sobbed silently.
"Haan haan, tum hi toh ho, jisne hummare bete ko hum se cheen liya. Tummhein sharam nahin aati, kisi aurat se uske bete ko cheente hue?"
Said Hamida, still angry at Jodha, glaring the hell out of her.
[Yes yes, it's you, who snatched my son off me, aren't you ashamed of snatching a son of a lady?]
"BAS, BOHOT HUA. Pehle toh aap hummari biwi ko, hummare hi samne beiyzzat nahin karengi. Jodha ki beiyzzati hum bilkul bardaasht nahin karenge. Balke hum yeh kahenge, ke aap ek buzzurk ho ke, iss tarha ke ghatiya soch rakhti hai?
Yeh mat bhuliye, agar aap apne bete ko khoyi hain, toh woh sirf aur sirf aap ke hai wajhe se. Ab agar aap ka yahan aane ka kaaran pura ho gaya hai, toh hum aap se khudahfiz kehna chahenge. Chali jaye aap yahan se."
[STOP, ENOUGH. First of all, you will not insult my wife, that too infront of me. I will not tolerate Jodha being insulted, at all. Instead, you being an old lady, you keep thoughts like this? Don't forget, that today if you've lost your son, then it's only your fault. Only because of you, you son is not yours anymore. Now if you're done with coming here, i would want to say goodbye to you. You may leave from here.]
After hearing what Jalal just said, Hamida remembered why she came here. But before she spoke again, Jalal again spoke up and said,
"There's a nanhi si jaan inside my wife, I do not want my child to feel any kind of disturbance just because of your useless crap, so you may leave, ammijaan"
[tiny life]
Hearing Jalal say 'my child', Hamida got softened. A tear pricked through her eyes. In a low and soft tone she says;
"I found out this morning that Jodha is pregnant. But you didn't even bother to tell me about this Jalal. Only you and Jodha do not have the rights over the baby. I do too, I am the daadi of my pota. I also have a full right over my grandson."
[I am also the grandmother of my grandson]
Jodha felt overwhelmed that her mother-in-law was showing love towards her baby. She wanted to go and hug Hamida. She wanted a motherly love, a motherly hug and a whole lot of care from her husband's mother.
"Ammijaan..." Whispered Jodha, with tears in her eyes, about to come towards Hamida for a hug. She took a step when Jalal says;
"You're wrong again ammijaan, not pota, a poti."
[You're wrong again ammijaan, not a grandson, a granddaughter]
Hamida's facial expression was changed again, she looked at Jalal in a shock. She thought, they've found out the sex of the child. Hamida was fuming now, she looked at Jodha and said;
"I don't want a Hindu granddaughter or grandson."
Jalal smirked as whatever he thought, was completely correct.
"Why ammijaan, why don't you want a Hindu granddaughter or grandson? Just a while ago you were confessing your love and rights over my child, thinking it's a son, don't you want a grandson anymore? The grandson you were thinking about a while ago, wasn't going to be a Muslim one without being in Jodha's womb anyway. Either if it's a boy or a girl, it will be half Muslim and half Hindu. You cannot change it no matter what."
Jodha stood quiet looking at the floor, she was getting a headache with the drama going on, but she quietly listened to everything that was happening there.
"And ammijaan, did you come here just because jodha is carrying my child? How did you find out that Jodha is pregnant?" He asked.
"I heard the news this morning." Said Hamida, looking away from Jalal.
"So you care about the child more than what ever happened with Jodha?
That's completely a shame on you ammijaan.
Your pregnant daughter-in-law was about to be raped, she went through hell, and you here, only came here because you found out that Jodha is pregnant and might give birth to my son?" Jalal was very disgusted at his ammijaan.
Jodha was stressing out; she didn't want the mother and the son fighting even more, especially over her. She couldn't think of what she can do to make them stop from fighting. She started feeling a bit dizzy, she hadn't had her afternoon nap today, and it was almost 6:30pm in the evening. She blinked a few times and tried to stand back up straight properly.
Still gazing at the floor, she hears Hamida replying Jalal.
"I can't believe that my own son; is talking to me this rudely. You will never understand me Jalal. Do what you want to do, I knew this lady, would ruin you and your reputation. Now the whole world knows that Jalal's wife, was nearly raped. Especially, when the wife; is pregnant."
Jodha kept shaking her head slightly; she kept blinking hard to stop herself from feeling even more dizzy.
Finally the dizziness took over Jodha's strength and she somehow whispered touching Jalals forearm.
"J-jal-al... "
Jalal heard her weak voice, Hamida and Jalal both looked at Jodha.
Jalal put his strong arms around her waist, stopping her from her weak body moving around. He understood that she's feeling dizzy.
He held her tight and asked her;
"Are you ok jaan?"
She replies back saying;
"Jalal I, I feel..."
And there she cannot see anything, everything blurred around her, she could see that Jalal was worried for her, but slowly that faded away as well. The darkness took over. She could not see anything.
She fell unconscious in Jalals arm.
Jalal got very worried for Jodha, he picked her up in his arm and moved towards his room when he saw his mother who was also worried and was about to follow Jalal to his room.
He stopped and in a low bold voice, he said;
"Don't you dare ammijaan. Don't you DARE come in front of me or my wife, just because of you, my Jodha is in this condition. I want you 100 miles away from my wife."
Saying that, he moved towards their room.
Hamida got a shock with Jalals words, but she didn't bother about her son. She was worried more about Jodha, she got worried about the child. She wanted to go and see what Jodha's condition was now, she wanted to go and take care of Jodha, pamper her with her motherly love.
But she remembered her son's words. She didn't care about her son, she wasn't scared of him. She looked around and bolted towards their room looking for Jodha and Jalal.
She reached to their room and saw Jalal putting Jodha in bed, carefully.
He quickly puts the blanket over her and stops right where her stomach bump starts from.
"Jalaaal." Called Hamida, ready to walk in.
"Stop ammijaan. Just go away from our lives again. We don't need you. We are happy with each other ammijaan. Please don't show me your fake concern for my wife. I've told you, and I'll tell you once again. Stay, away, from, my, wife, and, child."
Saying this, he grabbed his phone and called the doctor to immediately come over.
Hamida was in tears hearing her son's words. She was actually worried for Jodha and the child; after all it's her own son's blood, that's in Jodha right now. She knew that she is wrong, but she was never ever able to accept a Hindu daughter-in-law. She was truly hurt by Jalals words. Tears kept rolling down her cheeks as she was crying. She fell on her knees and cried harder.
Jalal turned and looked at his mother who was crying, on her knees.
He was very annoyed; he rolls his eyes and goes to his mother.
"Ammijaan" says Jalal in a very soft tone, grabbing his mother from her shoulders, indicating her to stand up.
"I'm sorry for talking to you like this ammijaan, but I honestly cannot forget what happened after me and Jodha got married. I still respect you ammijaan, but that doesn't mean that I am all good with you now, that doesn't mean I am not upset with you anymore.
Right now my wife is not well; I need time alone with my wife and child. So if you can, please excuse us.
You're more than welcome to stay here in the guest room upstairs. If not, you can leave."
Saying this, Jalal leaves his hands from his mothers shoulders.
Hamida who listened to her son very quietly, wiped her tears away and said,
"I am going to the guest room Jalal. If you can, please call me when the doctor arrives."
Saying this she went away.
Jalal turns and goes towards Jodha, she was still unconscious.
He sat next to her on the side of the bed and caressed her forehead.
"I couldn't take care of you na, that's why you lost consciousness."
He bends down and slowly gives a soft peck on her forehead.
Meanwhile, the door bell rings.
Jalal turns around and guessed
'The doctor arrived'
He looked at Jodha again and pecked on her forehead again.
He got up and walked to reach to the door.
But before he reached to his own room door, Hamida walks in with the doctor.
"Please come in doctor" says Hamida.
Jalal looks at Hamida with a frowned face. Hamida looks at Jalal in a guilty and innocent face, trying to ask him,
'Please' she whispered.
Jalal didn't say a word, but he indicates the doctor towards Jodha, who is unconscious on the bed.
Hamida also walked towards the bed and sat on the other side of the bed, next to Jodha.
"Doctor, my wife fell unconscious, I have no idea why.. She's 3 months pregnant"
Doctor: Sir, Madam, can I please request to check the patient alone in privacy?
"Ammijaan, you can go. Doctor, she's my wife, you can check her up without me leaving."
Said Jalal, in a bold voice.
Hamida glared at Jalal for asking her to leave. But she got up and left the room, closing the door.
"Please check my wife doctor"
Says Jalal.
Doctor starts to check Jodha up, after 5 minutes, she didn't have a great look on her face.
"Mr. Can I please have the latest report of your wife's pregnancy please?"
She asked.
Jalal quietly stared at her for a moment and got up, went to his desk, unlocked his draw with his keys and got out Jodha's pregnancy report.
Before hanging the report to the doctor, Jalal in a worried tone says;
"My wife does not know anything about how her pregnancy is going. She doesn't know that there are complications in her pregnancy. So please if she gains her consciousness, do not mention this in front of her at any cost."
"Absolutely not sir." She says and checks Jodha's report.
After a while she closed the file and sighed.
"Sir, your wife is going through a lot of stress. And stress is not good for her at all. This is the reason why she has fainted. I will give her some needles that will help her to get some relief. But you, being her husband, you should try to make her feel more happy, more pleased.
Now I know inter-course is not the solution here, your main doctor must've told you about this, right? "
"Yes, no sexual inter-course"
Jalal said very sadly.
"Yes. But there are ways to make your wife to feel relaxed, loved and happy.
Take her out maybe, but not too far from your house. Take her out, maybe for some light yoga. Get a book on pregnancy and have her in your arms while you both read it. Some slow music may make her feel relaxed.
I am sure she will make it through, you are very well known everywhere, I saw the news this morning as well, I am sorry for this, and I feel for your wife. But in this state of pregnancy, this incident must have shaken her. This is why she is probably stressed and scared.
You are all she needs. You can't give her any sex, but you can love her without any inter-course.
All I can say is; try to always keep her happy"
Saying this the doctor took out a needle and inserted it in Jodha's delicate body.
Jalal shut his eyes tightly until he heard the doctor chuckle.
"I see how much you love her. She would be awake in a while.
Please remember, she needs a lot of love, care and relaxation."
"Thank you so much doctor, I will drop you to the door." Says Jalal.
The doctor smiled and shakes her head saying;
"There's no need for that. You take care of your wife, I will go myself. Thank you."
Once the doctor walks out of the room, she finds Hamida walking from the left to right, and the right to left.
She smiles seeing her.
"Madam" she says.
Hamida looks at the doctor and rushes to her.
"How is my daughter-in-law now, doctor" she asked in a worried tone.
"Yes madam. But please make sure she gets no more stress, in this type of pregnancy, stress is not good for her at all. Try to keep her happy more often."
Tapping Hamida on the shoulder for comfort, she left.
Hamida didn't know what the doctor meant by saying 'in this type of pregnancy'.
"What type of pregnancy was the doctor talking about?
Stress for pregnancy is not okay anyway"
She lifted her face up and walked in Jalals room, found him with his forehead on Jodha's forehead.
She thought, maybe she shouldn't disturb the couple yet, even though one isn't even awake.
Hamida went to the living room again and sat on the couch. She was lost in deep thoughts.
After half an hour Hamida made her decision that she will leave the house now.
She got up and walked to Jalals room.
"Jalal" said Hamida in a low tone.
Jalal turned around, and just looked at her, waiting for her to speak.
"I'm leaving, take care of your wife and my grandchild."
"As you wish. I know how to take care of my wife and my child. You can leave" says Jalal, not looking back at Hamida.
Hamida didn't want to leave, but she thought that really they might be happy without her.
Without saying a word, a minute later Jalal heard the main door shutting.
He looked back and realized she left.
He goes and locks the door.
Once he came back in, he saw Jodha's eyes rolling, ready to gain her consciousness.
Her fingers were slowly moving
Jalal quickly rushed to her, he sat right next to her on the bed, leaning a bit on her, waiting for her to open her eyes.
He put his palm on her cheek, caressed it saying
"Jodhaa"
Jodha slowly flipped her eyes open. She blinked twice, and it automatically shut tightly as she couldn't take the sudden brightness after the darkness. She blinked again, thrice this time, slowly trying to open her eyes.
Her eyes slowly opened and as her vision cleared, she saw Jalal slightly leaving on her, with a worried look,
Jodha wondered what happened. But few seconds later, she remembered how she was feeling dizzy. She understood that she fainted.
Jalal caressed her cheek saying;
"How are you feeling now?"
Jodha remembers about Jalal and Hamida's fight. Suddenly she started breathing heavily and sat up on the bed, resting her back on the bed-head.
"Jalal, ammi.."
"She's gone Jodha"
"Gone where Jalal?" She asked a bit worried.
"Jodha please, enough of stressing yourself. If you truly love me and our child then you will not talk about ammijaan at all. Please just keep quiet and relax for god's sakes"
Yelled an irritated Jalal.
Jodha was speechless, she wanted to know what else happened, where her mother-in-law was, and a lot more.
She again opened her mouth to ask about Hamida. But she stopped when she saw Jalal's pissed off face.
She stops, takes a deep breath, and sighs is out facing the other side of Jalal, with her arms crossed together.
Jalal watches her and realized that he yelled at Jodha, for no reasons.
He rolls his eyes and comes closer to her.
"Jodha"
He brings his hands to her crossed arms, but she jerks her arms away before he even touched it.
"Jodha" Jalal says, a little louder and angrier.
Jodha turns her face towards Jalal and looks at him with an angry face.
"What?" She asked with a bold voice.
"I'm talking to you Jodha, you know I hate it when people don't look at me when I am talking"
"Well I'm not your employee Jalal, I am your wife. Don't treat me like your employee"
After a few seconds, she whispers to herself:
'Pehle toh bena wajhe ka daant diya, aur ab keh re hai ke you know that I hate it when people don't look at me when I'm talking. Huh.'
[first, scolds at me for no reasons and now he says that you know I hate it when people don't look at me when I'm talking. Huh.]
Jalal chuckles at what she just whispered.
"I'm sorry Jodha, I didn't mean to yell at you, it's just that I don't want my wife and child to go through any tension or stress" says an apologetic Jalal.
"Whatever, don't talk to me." Says Jodha facing the other side, not caring what Jalal is saying.
"Jodha please" says Jalal.
"No"
"Please Jodha"
"No, go away and leave me alone"
"Please Jodha" says Jalal once again.
This time Jodha doesn't say anything. She just irritatingly looks at Jalal, stopping her breath.
"Ok." Says Jalal and gets up to leave.
As Jalal turns around leaving the room, Jodha watches him leaving the room.
She feels guilty for making Jalal even more upset.
Saltwater wells in her eyes, as she sees him, slamming the door.
The 'bang' of the slamming door, made her sob even harder.
She clenches the pillow next to her, grabbing and placing it near her feet on the bed.
She looks at the door, bends forward, lays down on her stomach, placing her arm over the pillow, she cries.
She felt bad for getting Jalal angry.
She hides her face in the pillow and sobbed very hard.
Jalal comes back in with food in his hand. He gets shocked seeing Jodha crying.
Before he called her out, he hears Jodha talking, in between her sobs.
"I shouldn't have said that. Jalal never treated me like an employee or anything. He treats me way more better than a king treats his queen.. What have you done Jodha.. You got your Jalal upset.. I'm so sorry.."
Jalal softened a bit hearing Jodha.
No doubts, he was angry at her, but he never wants her to cry, or go through any types of pain.
He quickly puts the plate on the bed-side table.
He sits on the bed and caresses her head and hair saying;
"Jodha"
After Jodha heard Jalals voice, she cried even more.
"Jodha get up baby" says Jalal.
After Jodha heard him say 'baby' she understood that he is no longer angry at her, but she felt guilty for what she said to him.
She swiftly gets up and without looking, talking and warning, she hides her face in Jalals chest, hugging him tightly.
"I'm sorry Jalal, I didn't mean to make you upset. I don't know what happened to me, what suddenly made me so angry I have no idea Jalal"
Jodha said, in between her sobs.
"Jodha I am not angry or upset at you baby, I understand, it's just your mood swings my jaan"
Jodha lifts her head up and looks in Jalals eyes with her gleaming eyes which was full of tears.
Her arms still touching Jalals back, through his under arms.
She comes forward and pecks him on the lips.
She pulled apart after the first peck.
"I'm sorry"
She says and pecks again with her soft and wet lips.
Jalal hugs her even tighter and says;
"No need baby, come on, let's eat food now, I bought it here for us"
"I am not hungry Jalal." Says Jodha still hugging him with her head relaxed on his chest.
"You're not hungry Jodha, but my daughter is hungry." Grins Jalal.
Jodha broke the hug, pouted her lips and squinted her eyes without saying anything.
Jalal gives Jodha a bright smile, showing his teeth to her, knowing why she is looking at him like that.
Jodha and Jalal then both laughed out loud and hugged each other again..
