Jalal removed the curtain hurriedly whereas Surya left his chair and stood up. A middle aged widow entered the room. She was still beautiful though her age has already crossed forty. The cruelty of widow life had already left its mark on her slender frame. Backfacing her younger son completely, she addressed her elder son, "Surya, maine suna k ekadashi ko leke is mahine mein calender mein problem hui hai? Eisa to kabhi nahi hota."
Surya answered, "Hona to nahi chahiye maa."
-"Tu ekbaar pandit ji ko bula le ghar pe. Let's take his advice"
Surya smiled a little and then said, "Ha vo to bula lunga main. Par unke advice se kya hoga? When the news has already reached your ears,I know very well that you won't even touch water for those two days."
"Jhoot mooth k upwas karna koi shaukh nahi hai re..par kya kare? Ise karke thoda punya milega warna narak me jana hoga!", she paused and then said, "Ha re bahu bol rahi thi koi pandit sheher mein bohat achi Gita vyakt kar rahi hai. Dhundhke use ek baar is ghar me bula na?"

"Tumhari hukum ho toh bula lungi", Surya answered.
"Kyun? Meri hukum ki kya zarurat. Tujhe kya kabhi sunne ka man nahi karta? Vo kitne din ho gaye aakhri baar Gita..."
Surya interrupted laughing, "teen mahine bhi nahi hua maa!"
Maa looked surprised and said,"sirf teen mahine? Par teen mahine kya kam waqt hai? To wo jo bhi ho, is baar tu na nahi kar sakti. Meri dono maami ne cheetthi bheji hai. Is baar Kailash, Manas sarovar jana hai mujhe."
Surya said with joined hands, "Baas maa, us aadesh mat karna! Tumhari dono beta me ek agar tumhari saath na jaye, toh main tumhe maamio ki saath Tibet nahi bhej sakta. Saare dukh seh lunga par maa khone ka dard nahi seh paunga!"
On listening to this heart felt confession, mother's two eyes got filled with tears. She said, "Darr mat! Kailash ke raastay me mar jayegi, itni punya tere is maa mein nahi hai. I'll come back again. Par beto me se tu to nahi ja sakta,tere upar is sansaar ka saara kaam hai,aur jo piche khada hai use lekar toh main Baikuntha tak bhi nahi jaungi".

She paused and then added, "Brahmin ka beta hoke puja karna toh bohat din ho gya chod chuka hai aur ab toh sunti hu ke khaane ka bhi vichaar nahi karta. Uske upar kal kya kia hai suna tune?"
Surya replied with an innocent face, "Kya kia hai? I didn't hear anything."
Maa said, "Zarur suna hai, tere aakho ko dhokha dene ka shakti us ladke me nahi hai. Tu iska ek upay kar. He'll eat in my money, and then with my money only he'll hire people from Kolkata to make my people against me? Uske Kolkata ka kharcha tu bandh kar."
A surprised Surya asked, "Ye kya keh rahi ho maa? Padhai ka kharcha bandh kr du? He won't study?"
Maa said, "Zarurat kya hai? Meri sasurji k school ke ladke jab ek saath ye kehne aye ki English padhai me is desh ka sarvanash hua, tab to tu unhe maarne gya tha. Aur ab jab tera apna bhai yehi kehraha hai tab tu use support kar raha hai? Ye tera kaisa vichaar?"
Surya smiled a bit, "Uska wajah hai maa."
Maa said, "par ye kya? meri paison pe meri logo ko meri khilaf karna?"

Jalal was quite for the entire time. He didn't reply to anything nor he said anything. This time he answered, "For yesterday's programme, I didn't use a single paisa from your estate. "
From the time Hamida entered the room, she hadn't layed her eyes on her youngest son. This time also, she asked Surya, "Toh phir puch use ki use paisa kaha se mila".
Now sounds of bangles were heard outside the room. Surya listened to that for sometime and then said, "That's the answer maa! Tumhari apni bahu jab paisa de toh use rokegi kaun batao?"
Hamida remembered that and said, "Ha that's it! Moti ka hi kaam hai ye! Bade insaan ka bitiya, apne baap ke ghar se har saal jo che hazar (6000) rupiya paati hai, vo mujhe yaad nahi tha. She's supplying money to her wicked brother-in-law." She paused for a while, "jab tera rishta lekar uski baap ayi thi tabhi maine bola tha, Roy family ki beti ko laane ki zarurat nahi hai. Uski family me hi to koi Anath Roy England jaake shaadi ki thi. Un logo ke lie kuch bhi asambhav nahi hai."

Surya remained quite while smiling. He knew Moti will always have to face this taunt. In her family some Anath Roy had married an English lady, this was the thing that Hamida will never forget.
Seeing all quite, Hamida said, "Acha thik hai! Is baar Baba Kailashnath ne pukara hai, uska darshan leke aau uske baad isko dekhungi."
Saying this she went out of the room.
Surya said, "Jalal, maa ko leke jayega na tu? Is baar lagta hai use roka nahi jayega."
Jalal refused instantly and said, "You know na that I don't believe in God and she clearly said that she doesn't want me to go with her till Baikuntha also."
Surya got irritated, "Ha re maine suna. Par tu ja sakta ya nahi vo bata!"
"Now I don't have time to die also!", saying this Jalal left the room stopping further questions.
Surya sighed, "Desh ka itna kaam ki maa ko bhi maana kar sakta hai!"

Jodha is not in this chapter and she'll be mentioned a little late, may be in the third chapter.

I don't know much about Shurya character.. as I didn't read the novel. but in this chapter I can see he is an agyakari beta .
and Hamida is typical Sasuma of 20th century..
I loved the bond between dewar and bhabhi ..though their was no scenes of this two ..but Moti gave Jalal the money..
but I don't understand why Moti' s parents are giving money ???
is it a custom ???
anyway i guess Jodha's mom is from England..that Hamida mentioned here...

and haan you have really penned it down ..I can feel 20 th century rural touch here like Hamida's religious belief..and a hatred towards Modernism..
