Adi I want to ask you why did all the emperor had so many wet nurses? Why were they not raised by their mother? Did it not effect their emotional growth? Were they really capable of forming real attachments?

a good question ela, i think the queens were not allowed to work as much its just like the rich can afford nannies..i guess similar in those lines but when a mother sacrifices her sleep for the child and she is there for him/her day and night the special bond that a child builds is engraved in their mind for life and that is why akbar was more attached to maham and also was searching for a soul mate or someone that can love him truly!

I agree with you mandy...and just child...A woman will also suffer if her child is taken away from her...I mean she is allowed to give birth but never become a mother...It is inhuman...

Ela, mandy there was never any inhumanity - the child did have the mother but remember that in those days the babies were only fed mother's milk till 6 months - and even today one woman cannot feed her baby all the time and do other things - top feeding aaj bhi hoti hai - doctors yeh zaroor kehte hain that babies shd be given mother's feed but they dont say that this shd be the only feed - top feeds are given today - which in olden times was the wet nurse - and the wet nurse would always be one whose own child is now at the weaning stage hence about 6 months old or more - this ensured that the wet nurse could exclusively feed the royal child. In the case of royalty, this system ensured that the royal child would have some of his own age who would be tied to him by close bonds and hence more loyal as milk brothers or foster siblings - and the wet nurse too would have a closer bond of loyalty - yes there were MAs and Adhams but there were also those who were very loyal too. The Queen was the main carer but these wet nurses and dais were additional ones to care for the baby and give the Queen a break too - there was no inhumanity involved in this.

Adi you did not understand my question fully...perhaps i was not clear...My one question is about wet nurse and the other is abt the practise of children given to other queens to raise and they dont get to meet their mothers ever...like Ruku and Hussain...
