This is a wonderful post written by Kaana - on the Rukayya fake pregnancy track and the non-punishment to Ruk by Jalal.
She had shared this on PM and I am posting this super writing after Kaana said it is ok to post.
First I would like state my position that I am not endorsing Ruqaiyya's action. To me it is disgusting - faking a pregnancy, that too to one's husband, that too when there was no sight of a child for so long forget a heir, and when it is such an important and sensitive thing especially to him. I can't imagine how a woman could stoop down to this level, whatever may be the reason. So I CONDEMN this act of hers.
Now, wearing a judge's hat, so to say, as I do not want to sit on judgment on anyone. Basically, looking at it emotion free and seeing things as is, calls me to look at the drivers also- what made her to do even such a disgusting thing. This is what Jodha also says, let us first understand why she did this. Without getting into this, awarding a punishment just by the crime per say is unfair in my view. Any judgment needs to consider the situation also. As I said, otherwise, there is no opportunity for redemption. If after forgiving and warning, it repeats then it is a clear case for punishment. Lord Krishna said in the recent Mahabharata episode that one can be forgiven until point, after which punishment is the best way for redemption. And this punishment too is only out of dhaya. He gave His own example of how he forgave Sishupala a 100 times before punishing him. Likewise, Duryodhana was also given enough opportunity for correct himself, else the war would have happened much before. It is said saama, daana, bheda (separating - like Krishna attempted to separate Karna from Duryodhana hoping to avert the war and save many lives) and then dhanda (punishment). So dhanda is always the last resort after all opportunities have failed. Otherwise, why is there an option to forgive or reduction in punishment for good character in judiciary also. Many should have been hanged now. For that matter, even when crimes are established but the affected party is willing to forgive the other person still stands a chance for redemption.
So coming to Ruqaiyya, she has been forgiven and warned now. Next time she should be and hopefully will be punished. Also for that matter in Ruqaiyya's case the above said four instruments have not been applied. Neither had anyone tried to help her out - be it her phupi, Hamida or Jalal himself. She may be incorrigible, but she did not have the opportunity to introspect - whether she is capable of that will be a valid Q still!! So, while she has erred many a time before, did she repent, meaning, was there an opportunity in the first place for her to see her mistake? Jalal had always been forgiving but not correcting her, in other words, he was in a way spoiling her. The way it has been handled so far, but for yday, in my view, had not sent any strong message, on the contrary had been only encouraging that he will not bother. If you had seen my post on Ela's on wed- back to harem post, I had touched upon how he had pampered her at the cost of other begums- he had clearly spoilt her . He better pay the price now. By this am not saying Ruqaiyya is innocent, she has her own responsibility too. But it's like spoiling further an already adamant child by pampering it.
Why she did not correct herself is a valid Q? But my answer would be the fact is that she did not, that is how she is made. She is insensitive, selfish, power hungry etc. and questioning this is like questioning why Jodha is a nice person. This is her character. The argument that could be posed is the cruel Jalal changed himself, and again the answer would be because that was Jalal, his nature was so to, to learn from others and correct himself. Fine, does this justify Ruqaiyya's action? Ofcourse not, she has to pay the price. Duryodhana, though had all the wise around and so many advises from them, still stuck to his behaviour - that is how he is, full of ego, arrogance, power hungry. But he had many an opportunity to correct himself, whereas Ruqaiyya did not would be my view - her wise company is MA. Jalal was weak in front of her all along, whatever be the reason. She had her way right from childhood. Also, none, just none, not even elders also seem to have bothered about her pathetic behaviour all these days and suddenly you (I mean phupi, hamida and others) expect her to be noble? They have seen her behaviour in harem, why none questioned her or advised her? Why is it required for Jodha to come now and question these things, and then everyone sing her glory? In my same post in Ela's thread, I have talked about how Jalal even ignored complaints of other begums against Ruqaiyya. So, what else can be expected of Ruqaiyya? She needs a big blow for her to wake up. As we all know, she will not change even after this big opportunity given by Jalal. So, the big blow is what will work on her.
Now, I do not want to be seen as shifting the blame on Jalal. How can I do that? Then no individual can be responsible for their action. But at the same there also factors that could have directly or indirectly encouraged a behaviour - a sane person will be able to discriminate and take the right step, while ppl like MA, Ruqaiyya are carried away on the path of wrong. So, Jalal is not being held responsible for this, his role or the lack of it is what being pointed here.
And Ruqaiyya is not one who is matured to mature out when forgiven. She is the type who will only gloat about it too - she will only think that Jalal will not punish her. She is that deluded. Srimad Bhagavad Gita says "dhyayato vishayaan... pranashyati' - of which the second part details how one who gets attached to something and is driven by one's desire, when desire does not fructify is overcome by anger, and from anger sets in delusion, from which one looses one's ability to discriminate resulting in destruction finally. Our Ruqaiyya is a classic example for this.
And if you ask me, when Ruqaiyya is so - never to learn, Jodha and Jalal still forgave her? This question calls for an understanding of the POV of Jodha and Jalal. But quickly, do they know the Ruqaiyya as we know, with all her evil intentions, would be my counter question?
I hope I am not seen as glorifying Ruqaiyya, I am only seeing the drivers behind her action to get a holistic view of the crime. And the above is just one factor that I have considered, there are other factors like her insecurity etc. also, which have been dealt in detail by Diskha, Jaya, Ela, Sun and few others beautifully.
Now, stab me away :-)
Jodha's POV:
If we want to call her mahaan, then maybe she deserves it J. Now, keeping our emotions aside, let us try to get into her shoes. What are the data points that she has on Ruqaiyya - she is proud of her power and will wield it as well (from the first meeting), will want to and do anything to retain that her special status (from the initial days at Agra and later politics played during harem election), possessive about Jalal, Jalal is dear to her (gratitude expressed by her to Jodha for saving his life from Benazir but saying can give anything but Jalal - whatever be the reason we can think of, Jodha can only think she loves him). And we know Jodha reveres love!
So, when Jodha is trying to understand Ruqaiyya's reason behind the horrible act, she sees that Ruqaiyya is jealous, like she was also sometime back which it settled down only after Jalal convinced her of his deep love and loyalty for her. Given that Jodha's heart naturally beats for love for anyone or any creature, she is able to immediately relate to Ruqaiyya's love pangs (I know we think differently though - but Jodha has not seen Ruqaiyya and her evil deeds as we have seen). She even appreciates that Jalal has been ignoring Ruqaiyya post their own love confession and how hurtful it could be. We may say that Jalal has told Ruqaiyya also that her position will remain - firstly, we have seen that it is changing, secondly Jodha need not know this conversation between them, thirdly, Ruqaiyya is not Jodha to be content and more importantly believe in Jalal's words, her expectation and demands would remain still.
So, summarily she sees the love behind the act which does touch her and is valued by her and is something which, in her view, is to be respected and considered. To me, more than saving Jalal from carrying the grief of punishing Ruqaiyya, Ruqaiyya's own love for Jalal (as Jodha sees it) is the primary reason for Jodha to stop Jalal from punishing her.
Question then is why she ridiculed Shivani's behaviour? Shivan's case is different. She was not against Shivani's love, but condemned the behavior. She did not even tell Jodha, who could have supported her. She was given an opportunity to express her views, but she committed in the DEK and then went back on the words, bringing disgrace to all. (We know the reason behind, till date Jodha and Jalal do not know MA's role here). Secondly, the situation is that Ruqaiyya is on the verge of punishment and Jodha has to stop it. I am sure she is not glorifying the fake pregnancy, the approach perse, but she is only stopping a punishment looking only at the act alone and not the reason behind it. In Shivani's case also, if a punishment were to be given to her separating her from her lover, am sure Jodha would stood up against that as well. She even justified Shivani's love to her father.
Jodha is always like this forgiving the wrong people, why does she behave so as it will have its repercussions? Sheriffudin is a big goof by her - I keep hearing this. Now, why can't Jodha forgive Sheriffudin - because you think he is a villain?? She still does not think so, as she is still unaware of his holy deeds behind the screen! But, didn't he cause a FP and insult the salatanat? Guys, then many in the saltanat should have been long before hanged - first, Adham, a direct saltanat traitor (even to the extent Jalal knows that he has been mishandling things and treating his riya badly) - Jalal has been forgiving him for MA's sake, MA (her evil act impacts saltanat, cannot be seen as saas-bahu issue) - she is forgiven for dood ka karz, Abul Mali (a direct threat for the saltanat) - forgiven for the sindoor of his sister (whatever that is equivalent in Islam J). So, if we see family relationship is being considered. Sheriffudin and Bakshi case is a more of a family revenge. If we remember (post her arrest for Ruqaiyya's MC) Jodha says to the public who abused Jalal's act that it is a matter between a husband and wife. We seem to be carried away by this statement of saltanat thrown even by Jalal now and then, while family matters are being treated as family matters. So, when the brother in law has done something out of hatred, hatred not for them but for the community to which Jodha belongs - why can't he be forgiven? (Remember, they do not know his real intentions and act). Agreed he did such a disgusting act - still, a family member can choose to forgive. And to Jodha, Bakshi's happiness is more important than the insult heaped on her. Such is her magnanimity. This is not a stupid act according to me. I would happily and genuinely call her a mahan indeed.
Jalal's POV:
He forgives, but does not forget. We know to forget is divine. But Jalal is too hurt and given his nature, he just cannot forget. Especially, as he has been hit on a sensitive area. He forgives more for Jodha, is my view. Else, he would have given some punishment atleast for her like for MA. Poor MA, she did not have Jodha then to save her.
He also realizes his mistake and Ruqaiyya's grief, but that is not making him forgive her really. This is my take. I am not sure he is going to comp off for the lost time now by giving Ruqaiyya more of his time. For that matter, he would only want to move away from her more. That is his temperament as I see.
And it is also a fact that he still likes Ruqaiyya a lot and considers his special friend. So, though he may punish her, he would be sulking still like in the case of Bakshi. So, in that sense he is grateful to Jodha to have saved this relationship. That was my quick short take on Jalal. Lots of his POV have anyway been discussed in detail in the forum, so will leave it at this.
But, I would like to bring a contrast here, Jodha not just forgives but forgets the crime as well. That is why she is able to love Bakshi even today. She is still able to be patient and kind to MA and Ruqaiyya though they have insulted her so much. She knows Sheriffudin's role to stop Sukanya's wedding, but she is not holding it against him.
