Thank you so much for the update Adia, loved reading every bit of it. 🤗 I am very sure today that I respect this man more than any other historical figure I have ever read about 👏 He was not only a jack of all trades but a fantastic master of all too
Man I so wish to be Ms. India for a day in Akbar's court 400 years ago, just to see what he didn't do because as far as I have read from this thread of yours.. he did and enjoyed doing a lottt of things 😆

Thats it Jeannie - He not only did so much but he enjoyed doing all this!!! And when anything that we do becomes a joy for us we give it our all!!! - There is so much that one can learn from him!!!!
He was a breath of fresh air in a time when people mindlessly followed their forebears without ascertaining the truth which is the noblest of all human endeavors. I am just quoting from the letter he wrote to King Philip of Spain. But, how true it was.
Akbar followed his heart. And he was ready to fight for it.
Akbar's pride in India is tempered with a critical spirit. If India is to be identified by the currency of certain customs and beliefs, it is not necessary that these be accepted. Akbar thus adds a new component to the vision of India, that of reform. His prohibition of sati, and of pre-puberty marriages, his demand for equal inheritance for the daughter, his condemnation of slavery and slave trade, all suggest the rejection of some of the burdens of the past. From India seen as a cultural unity, and then as a cultural diversity undergoing synthesis, we have with Akbar the first vision of India undergoing moral or social improvement. It was linked to a bold rejection of traditionalism. He is reported as saying."
The pursuit of reason ('aql) and rejection of traditionalism (taqlid) are so brilliantly patent as to be above the need of argument. If traditionalism was proper, the prophets would merely have followed their own elders (and not come with new messages).
One could almost say that with Akbar we begin to have in a rudimentary form a pre-modern vision of modernization of India, a patriotism without revivalism. But for what, in greater detail and depth, India meant to Akbar and his circle we have to go to his principal spokesman, Abu'l Fazl.
Akbar adopted several measures which modified the character of the state. He made an extensive and effective use of suzerain-vassal polity by which a large number of non-Muslim chiefs became politically subordinate to him. He tried to induct the willing vassals into the mansabdari system as an important component of his general policy. He abolished the discriminatory jizya and the pilgrimage tax. He discouraged cow slaughter and forcible conversion from one faith to another. He extended state patronage to non-Muslim institutions and individuals. His concessions and measures for conciliation resulted in peace and security in his vast dominions.
The establishment of relative peace and security became an important condition for the growth of prosperity. Extension of agriculture was an important objective of Akbar's revenue policy. There are clear indications that more and more land was brought under cultivation during the late sixteenth century. Cash crops were sown for the market and agricultural produce was used for manufactures. Standardization of weights, measures and currency was conducive to economic development. To encourage trade, Akbar abolished many internal imposts. Routes were protected for caravans and trade became a pretty safe proposition. Akbar's reign was marked by revival of trade on a large scale. The increase in the size and the number of urban centres in the dominions of Akbar during the late sixteenth century was an indication of increase in the volume of trade and manufactures as well as in agricultural production.Originally posted by: Arieltabi
