No, Sam, I am not going to cut Jalal any slack. If you like you can have him rolling all over the Agra palace in a lovesick daze, like another Devdas, but I hated it. It showed a total loss of control because of his obsession with one woman, and NO emperor worth his salt can afford to be like this.

A king is NOT, and cannot be, the same as an ordinary man. If he wants to be like one, he should quit.

Come to think of it, this Jalal was prepared to do just that, forgetting all that he owed to his people and his lineage, just to keep his promise to Jodha that she would not have to change her religion. I was horrified then, even as the bulk of the forum was gaga over him. If you have the time and the inclination, please take a look at my

Jodha Akbar 100b: The demands of Rajadharma

https://www.indiaforums.com/forum/post/95362899

A ruler who has no control over his mind and his body is not worth anything. You say that he did not get sozzled in the DEK. True, as of now. But what does this Jalal do these days, even in the DEK? When he talks big about wanting Sujamal dead or alive, it is merely to get a reaction from Jodha. In any case, it is so much hot air, all talk and no action.

The Shahenshah-e-Hind has not been shown doing a single active, sensible kingly thing for weeks now. Correct me if I am wrong, but can you spot a single intelligent, decisive, effective step he has taken of late?

All he does is to wander around the palace, go from one part of the harem to another, and issue vague orders to his Ministers, who nod their heads and say Hukum ki taameel hogi and then promptly forget all about it.

He does not know anything of the plots being hatched right under his nose. He does not suspect even those who have very recently rebelled openly against him. Why, because Jodha Begum, a princess from a tinpot little kingdom who has no idea of the cares and burdens of a huge empire, has taught him that to forgive is noble and far better than to suspect.

If Chandragupta Maurya had behaved like Jalal does these days, Chanakya would have disowned him without the slightest hesitation and gone off to groom a more promising pupil.

This Jalal is as inept as his ministers and his spies, and why? Because his whole zehen is taken up, not with the expansion of his empire or even the better administration of what he already has, but with getting Jodha to care for him. It is pathetic.

Take just one example. He has forgotten all about the pilgrimage tax though he was ready to be whipped for it, and why? Because he is waiting for Jodha to remind him about it. Then he will abolish it and sing hosannas to her for inspiring him.

When he was staring at her in the bed and remembering the dhakka and the Sujamal meeting, and his face was looking like it was made of marshmallow - not even Rajat can salvage a shot like that - I was silently yelling at him Get a grip on yourself, you idiot!

I do not like weak men (or women). Least of all an emperor. And Akbar could never have been like this Jalal. Clueless, directionless, wailing in front of one wife that the other - who can do no wrong by his definition - is lying to him thru her pretty pearly whites and use yeh bardaasht nahin hota.

His getting sozzled, depressing as it is, is significant not so much per se, but more as an encapsulation of what he has now become 24x7.

Jalal's falling down for the second time was both literal and symbolic. Jodha will rise and for that, Jalal will be made to fall. It is like a seesaw. You will see. As for me,if things go on at this rate, I can already see myself on my way out of this forum and perhaps even this serial.

I am sorry if I sound too irritated, but I did not sign on for this mindless tripe masquerading as an eternal romance, which has reduced one of the greatest rulers of all time to a weak, whimpering, tottering lush.

Maybe I am just too old to appreciate such a great romance. But then even when I was young, I hated Devdas, even when Dilip Kumar played him to perfection. But by all means cut him as much slack as you want to.

Well, my eyes are protesting: I have been straining them too much these last few days. Bye for now, my dear. It is good that at least you young people are having fun.

No no Aunty.. You got me all wrong. I'm as much against this inactive, jobless emperor (I simply love that term.. Hats off to whoever came up with it) as you are. And I agree, nowadays all he does is wander around the corridors of the palace like some bhatakati aatma. All he lacks is a rose in his hand, plucking its petals, "she does / she does not?", "should I ask / should I not?" His sultanat seems to run by itself. If Atgah goes on a strike tomorrow for any demand, everything is just gonna crash on Jalal's head.

My point and scope was very very narrow. I was looking at that scene of Jalal falling from the bed in isolation. At that moment for me he was simply a man losing himself in the presence of love of his life. He was nobody else other than Jalal. No emperor, no shahenshah, nothing. Just Jodha's husband. For me his being completely sloshed was just like any of us venting out frustration the way we want behind the closed door of our bedroom. I believe every individual needs that one place where he can just be himself, may it be a king or a pauper. For Jalal, it's Jodha. With her he can be completely and only himself.

However, I do agree that Jalal is being dealt an unfair hand. He is being shown careless, rude, hurtful towards Jodha which is completely unnecessary. Every so often they show him thinking "magar wo kuch galat nahi kar sakati.." and that's it, next thing you know is he starts second guessing himself. Seriously looking at Jalal today only one thing comes to my mind "Thali ka Baingan".

And Aunty, I strongly "Proteshhht" the idea of you being out of the forum. For the sake of you pankhe, you simply can't.

Sam

PS - Haven't seen today's episode yet. Actually a bit afraid. Don't know how much more Jalal has sunk in his "Is She/ Isn't She" dilemma? Was it too bad? Any hope for him?

I guess a few of us want to see a Sheshenshah in love with hi begum and not any normal love story.

There is a difference between both. Love is same be it for a king or for a common man. But the way that person behaves is what matters and differs.

Being an emperor, there are certain things which needs to be followed. Whether he likes it or not. If he acts like devadas then let him leave everything thing and be one.

Jalal is just not interested in anything now a days. If things are going well with them, he will be ahppy and finding reasons to meet her and make her happy.

If things are bad, he would just think about it feel bad. So both the times he is doing nothing but to think of her.

An emperor has 1000 things to think and work on. And Jalal is not even doing 1% of it. If they want to show a proper love story, then I guess they have chosen the wrong characters.

And today episode, sorry no offense. But you cannot keep celebrating everyone's birthday as utsav. In that case will it not be a utsav everyday. I understand and respect the Kwaja sahrif and bandies as well. But utsav for it, is a bit too much.

In the process of showing Jodha as mahan, they are making a mockery of her character and showing her a dumb.

And now its confirmed, the blanket Jodha wears and roams everywhere makes one invisible for sure. Monday we will see MA wearing that...

Hey, would MA need any sort of a prop to make he invisible. I doubt. Even roams around like some old chudail in all that dazzling white, nobody seems to catch her doing anything wrong. I guess, she is like Dumbledore. Remember, how he said, he could make himself invisible whenever required? He didn't need any cloak, neither will Maham Angaa..

Frankly I haven't. Couldn't work up any interest. got the general idea from the forum. If Jodha is trying to celebrate Hoshiyaar's birthday, then I'd say she is having her PMS. That could be the only reason. 😆

Not that she can't. It's not that it's Hoshiyaar's b'day per se, All said and done, he is supposed to be some sort of a servant, right? Beghum celebrating a servant's birthday in that era !!😲

And who's gonna be the "guest of honor"? She expects Jalal to be the "GOH" of the party??🥳

Sandhya, too good.. I couldnt stop laughing reading ur lines.
I have a serious question.. does Jodha have Amnesia.
Shivani ran away - Jo's sister and she doesnt even think about once about it and feel bad, angry, hurt? Come on, she is her sister. she sould remember her, atleast.
She did all moonwalk, nightwalk as she was worried about her husband's life. Now has she completely forgotten about it?
She agrees to herself that she in prem with shehenshan and when he comes she says hum aapka samaan karthe hai?
She was the one who heard the conversation during Sukanya's marriage - between SD and AK.. She knows they created all misunderstanding. Cant she just use her brain and think once, this could be on of them?

It's more like multiple personality disorder coupled with obsessive compulsive disorder with a touch of somnambulism. That's why she dresses as a commoner (forget that she tries to do it only with a blanket), constantly on a look out for ways to reform Jalal and has nocturnal visits to strange places.

My dear Sam,

"Careless, rude, hurtful towards Jodha, which is completely unnecessary." Really?

Now let us assume that you are a 16th century absolute monarch. Take the Maharana of Mewar, Udai Singh. You see your wife sneaking out of the palace, muffled in a cloak, to meet a strange man in the dead of night, near a hut. After the man has placed his hands gently and what looks like tenderly on her shoulders, they disappear into the hut and close the door.

What do you imagine the king would do? Be careful, painfully polite and sensitive and tell her, Look, you can carry on these shenanigans with strange men keeping me in the dark all you want. Don't worry, it is my duty as your spouse, as prescribed by Jodha Begum, to trust you and not utter a word of reproach regardless of how you behave, and I will fulfil my duty. I will also wait, again as per Jodha Begum's rules for such occasions, till you have decided on the uchit samay to fill me in on your doings.

I think not. Udai Singh would have either stormed into the hut and executed both of them on the spot in a rage, or sentenced her to death later. Or at the very least to a lifetime of solitary confinement. Even if her explanations were taken and believed, and the adultery charge was dropped, she would have been punished for meeting clandestinely with an enemy of the State.

And no, Jalal is no thali ka baingan. In fact he is amazingly trusting. No king of that age would have behaved as he does, faced with such a damning set of circumstances. Very few men today either, or families either. That the circumstances are entirely misleading is besides the point.

As I wrote above, and which you have apparently overlooked, Jalal
makes an absolute cake of himself because, deep down, he is afraid she is cheating on him with the mystery man, so he asserts all the more loudly that she can do no wrong in order to drown out that little inner voice.

To revert. by these 16th century standards, Jodha gets off very lightly. And don't worry, the Shahenshah will be apologising for all her failings , and falling at her feet, this time metaphorically, all over again quite soon. That is when I quit.

As for tonight's episode, Jodha moves one more step towards sainthood. She now wants to celebrate Hoshiyaar's birthday with a jashn. I was pleased that Jalal, perhaps for an entirely different reason that had nothing to do with this ridiculous proposal, turns her down flatly and very bluntly. So, her assertion to Ruqaiya, who refuses permission when applied to, that she will go to the Shahenshah and get it approved falls flat. She is so used to getting her own way with him by deafening him with her bhashans that she is shocked and upset. I, on the contrary, was pleased. Not that I think this assertive Jalal is going to last, but it was good while it lasted.

It is not Jalal who has been dealt a bad hand by the CVs. It is Jodha, who looks and sounds all the time like a cross between a Salvation Army preacher and, as someone noted here, a moral science teacher. You should listen to her preaching to Hoshiyaar today about the need to be grateful to God for one's existence. It brought tears into his eyes, while mine glazed over.

She was reserving another bhashan for Jalal, about the need to spread prasannata in the lives of the khwaja seras by having jashns for their birthdays. But she had just got started with Hum chahte hain ki .. when he cut her short, yes, rudely, told her his refusal was final and in any case, once Ruqaiya had refused permission for it, she, Jodha, should never have come to him. She was stunned into tearful silence. I was silent too, in shock that Jalal would actually refuse his Jodha Begum something.
