Yes Shivaji Maharaj had gone on his famous Surat triumph at that time. His father Shahaji Raje Bhosale died when had gone on shikar. His horse's hoove got into a ditch and both fell and he was thrown on a rock.
Jijamata decided to go sati and had in fact done all the rituals associated with it. Shivaji Maharaj came back from Surat to see the flags at half mast on the fort and when told about Jijamata he rushed to stop her. He did it successfully.

His son Sambhaji Maharaj also tried very hard to stop Putalabai (his step mother) from going sati, but she was extremely devoted to Shivaji Maharaj and did not listen to him. She was not around on Raigad at the time of Shivaji Maharaj's last rites and so she made an image of him and went sati with that image later.

I know that in Mahabharat Karna's 1st wife Vrushali went Sati. Krishna did Karna's last rites and Vrushali came to where they were on a hill and walked into the pyre.

I have also read the same explanation for Jauhar so that the enemy could not even get the bodies to mutilate.

Were not the woman shoved with opium,and drugged to force them to commit Sati?

Yes, regarding Sati there was some talk between them in the court. Though her own mother commited sati as per what shweta told me. So that may be a reason in her taking part in this decision...??..

Also Akbar banned only forceful Sati.!. Not voluntary Sati...!...

Yes women were normally drugged during this process.!.

Also try to find out the first major Durga Puja by Akbar and also who caused it..?..😉..You will not get this on Net..!.. But i feel you got what i mean here...This answer is evident if you visit Amer's Palace..

Coming to the present slavery track. Slavery abolition had something to do with Harem slavery as well. And there is also mention that DESPITE abolition of slavery it started again later..!..
Some involvement of harem is there...No matter this may appear funny but this issue relates to harem ALSO..!. I will write more on this thread later if i get some info...ROFL...😆..

Btw, in India slavery was practiced since Delhi Sultanate times and even before that we had the concept of chandalls during Guptas. Who were basicaly 'outcaste slaves' basically like modern manual scavengers. And we know about famous slave trade of africans by europeans who were sent to Americas..!..

BUT this was abolished in 1560's itself in Mughal India..!..way before those people abolished it in west..
