I read somewhere when the issue of Sati being forcefully been committed in Akbar's court, MUZ had some kind influence on banning the forceful Sati. It is said that they both discussed it.The issue was shown rising in Akbar The Great from the 90's

Were not the woman shoved with opium, and drugged to force them to commit Sati?

@ Abhay...one more thing HK's mother also commited sati around mid 1570s and Akbar (or maybe Bhagwan Das) built a tower/burj in Mathura in her memory.
Again the freak Aurangzeb destroyed some parts of this tower.

True, I found it on the internet but the source of the story mentioned ( The Great Mughal by Smith) and the source of Akbar's quotation is mentioned(Ain-I-Akbari). An article with credible sources is itself credible.

Buddy I was kidding (I did put in emoticons!), knowing what Abhay, Kamal say about stuff found on internet. 😃😃😃

I was not doubting your post or writing.

Hope this clarifies, your post is super and making one think - that is the criteria for me of a good post so for you 👏👏👏

NO NO - It would be grossly generalising the issue. I wrote the reply late at night and a short one. So this confusion.

I meant what Sati came to mean later in 19th-20th Century, for opportunists.

Some practices even though barbaric and horrific came into practice due to the times. Just imagine if Sharifuddin had managed to kill Jodha's brothers and had captured Amer. What might have happened to the women. In those days women did not have any independance and rather than falling into hands of enemies they saw Johar and Sati as a form of saving their dignities.
Same for Sati, for some women they did not feel they had any life after their husbands.

Do you know Shivaji Maharaj stopped his own mother from going Sati around 1660-70s, but after his death one of his wife Putalabai went sati (his chief queen Soyara bai did not).

In Maharana Pratap they showed him stopping his mothers from doing Johar and promised he will not let anybody harm them

What might have started as a practice to save women's dignities in the constant wars and churning times of earlier centuries was turned into a FALSELY GLORIFIED CUSTOM for women, to take advantage of this for getting their properties in late 19th centuries.

There are instances of great men stopping such barbaric practices due to their liberal thinking.
Akbar was one of them and the story Donjas has shared makes for fascinating reading.

Johar was largely practiced in Rajasthan not known so much in rest of India - though I am first to say my knowledge is very limited.

Shivaji Maharaj described religion in this beautiful way - it has to be inclusive and it is formed to keep men in, to give them sense of belonging - NOT to keep them out

He said this when he argued for accepting a forcibly converted Hindu man into Muslim, back into Hindu religion. The religious minds of that time opposed but he said they can afford to reject somebody but HE AS A KING CANNOT he has to give justice to all who come to him.
He argued that religion has to be like a flowing river and purify and change according to times - not remain a pond by retaining practices which became out of times

There are so many great men like Raja Ram Mohan Roy and others who fought against barbaric practices of sati, or who introduced widow remarriage, education for women and so many liberal thoughts

I find it fasctinating that Akbar went to this extent for stopping sati - the story Donjas shared is fascinating and glorious

MaddyO, I think you explain it very nicely. Sati started as a necessity(in certain situations) but it became distorted into a hideous custom. And to obfuscate the horror of the situation, it was glorified as a noble act.

Salutes... 👏 .
A very interesting fact indeed.

I would like to add to your info.

It was the Maharani of Jodhpur, who was going to perform Sati..
Akbar started personally on a horse, travelled 720 kms on his horse at 1 stretch, and stopped the act, just when she was about to enter flames..!!...

Such a magnanimous personality he was..And he went out without his royal entourage / guards...

I hope these threads will help many who have a great misconception about Akbar's persona regarding treatment and his outlook towards women..!!..

Akbar banned Sati but was not successful, but for a start he gave a challenge. Later, Jahangir and Aurangzeb also banned it.

Finally, the legislation was passed against Sati on 4 Dec 1829, by Lord William Bentinck, after repeated efforts of Raja Ram Moham Roy. Roy also wrote a book where he mentioned about Sati. Probably, The book's name was Jamunai Nag.

I have written what i remember. Will add more later..

Great info.. 😊 ...Tfs...

I admire more Akbar for hearing he took all that trouble just to stop a woman performing Sati. I salute him!
