Thanks
thats the point i made he is not brother, son, father, uncle of emperor
If this rule was so strict none of the legendary romances would take place whether salim-anarkali, salim-meherunissa, khurram-mumtaz etc because no man apart from emperor can meet/see harem women or any outside woman face as they are in veil?
If this is rule i am wondering how they celebrated weddings, parties they just cannot meet any woman except when they go out of the fort. There also everyone knows they are emperors relatives no one will dare go near them. This looks like that all boys hostel or all girls college situations of modern time even more stricter actually since woman also wore veils to cover face. So no man will ever see any woman's face at any time? Highly stupid and confusing rules.
The more rules you do its human tendency to try and break them because all humans prince or common man require and crave for one thing in life freedom. Going by those stupid harem ruules apart from emperor no male prince can see any woman's face except his wife and daughter?

I am sure these gaurds and a few spies would keep watch on emperors relatives too?
Pls this Devar babhi relation of jodha-hakim is pure. Its not like both are after each other. If your heart is pure why not meet Devar or bhabhi in harem only?
Akbar understands that because i had read that Akbar took some of his best friends like Ram Singh Maharaja of Rewa to harem to meet his wives/family etc.
Benazir kind of dancers/bandi's is different matter. Pls do not compare them to wives of emperor. That was 16th century all men knew where to draw lines and maintain family relationships atleast.
Like that Akbar himself married Daulatshad by making her divorce her nobel husband in delhi. In those times girls were not simply saying stay behind curtains/veils men were scared what if a powerful man sees his wife, sister, daughter and wants her and just snatches her. There was no police and law in those times that you could go and file complaints against powerful people like akbar himself may be. Even today powerful people in position cannot be questioned if they do such things and will not be punished in many countries including india. Imagine 16th century? They were anarchy times really and sacry too. Its not about woman's rights but safety of life first.
But to answer your question on salim he need not ever go to harem his mom, salima, ruqu and hamida all three moms and grand mom whom he loved had their seperate palaces and did not live in harem anyways. He could just go and meet them in those palaces. If i am not wrong his mom lived in that Jehangir palace at agra fort with him. That is the one palace still in good condition in agra fort.
Another point to note when Daniyal and Murad died their wives and children came under Jehangir's care and they all lived with Jehangir at agra fort/lahore forts/delhi fort/kabul fort(not in harem) in palaces wherever he went. Jehangir also acted in place of father in marriage ceremonies/school going cermonies of his brother's kids as they were given in his custody after their father's death. So he was like family head of a joint family in his family. Definetly that role would have made him interact with his bhabhi's. So this rule was not followed that strictly.
Indeed when Daniyal died at Deccan his family stayed at Allahabad fort where Jehangir was subedhar on way to agra. Jenhagir's conflict had just started with Akbar at that time as he was 30-31. And for majority of his rebellion his wives/kids stayed at agra for not with him in allahabad but with akbar. So all these harem rules etc devar- bhabhi cannot meet rules were not for close family atleast not sons, brothers, fathers etc. Otherwise Salim would not sit peacefully at allahabad in rebellion while majority of his wives/kids was in agra if their life was in danger. He knew they will be taken care off even if he was away.

I wasn't comparing the queens to Benazir like people AT ALL. They are too different in all aspects to be compared. I got what you are trying to say. Family was allowed to meet and interact. Also, took care of each other. Even Khusarau's family was taken care of despite his rebellions and imprisonment. A lot of functions including weddings took place in MUZ palace but as you said, it wasn't exactly part of the harem. The interaction of the princes with the non-family ladies of the harem, must have been limited. Atleast after they come of age.

All the romances that started in harem, started at a very young age. Whether it was Salim-Mehrunnisa or Khurram-Mumtaz both were the romances of childhood. Though Mehrunnisa and Salim's meeting in Meena Bazaar in spring of 1611 is, at times, considered the first time they met. Salim saw Anarkali for the first time when she danced in a gala orgnised in his honor, according to Mughal-e-Azam. The rules were high-strung in harem. They didn't appoint darogas for nothing. Friends were accomapanied by the King or the princes to harem for meetings with the family.

14-15 was the average age when Princes started marrying i.e. came of age and not allowed to roam in the harem on their own accord. Brothers, fathers etc would have also had limited access to harem, just to meet the person concerned. Almost every male relative had their own harem. Any rich man could have a harem. And all had the same rules of conduct. The most important being, very limited interaction with males.

HM-Jodha interaction strikes as odd because of it's timing. There must be rules preventing night meetings with begum, other than the Shahenshah. Even Man Singh came in the harem only once. Have we ever seen him again in Jodha's khwabgah? The nightly chit-chat between the two is something very improbable and kind of stupid on Jodha's part too. Given that he is her devar and they share great vibes, he is practically a stranger. She met him only a few days back. She should have bundled him out her room with Rahim in the most polite way possible.
