The most interesting and complex character of JA serial is Ruqaiah because she has so many shades to her character. OK jealousy, ambition to be mariam-uz-zamani etc are some of her traits which we all know.
But the most enduring trait is she is lonely and insecure whether as per history or as per serial both. Why?
Every woman requires someone for whom they want to live for who will be exclusively theirs only. For a girl child first it is her parents(usually fathers) or siblings, after marriage her husband, then her children and finally in last phase of life her grand children. In 15th century this is more true because woman never went out of house or to work etc.
Men usually have their profession to pursue so they are not that attched to anyone or anybody. Take case of Akbar he has his goal set he wants to unite entire indian subcontinent under him and that was his aim in life. Jodha had Salim and his kids, Salima had Khannum and Rahim and their kids and other begums if not for kids from Akbar had some family from maternal side.
But imagine Ruqaiah's plight. She lost her mother as a toddler, she had no siblings whom she could share her pain, fear and happiness and lost her father at age of 7. The three people whom she relied on her uncle Humayun is no more, Hamida cares two hoots about her and is showing favouratism to Jodha only always and Akbar too is smitten with not only Jodha but 300+ more wives. Every week a new wife or can we say trophy lands up in agra fort to take Jalal's attention away from her. Add 3000+ cocubbiness and maids to that. And i truly pity that woman called Ruqaiah Babar's grand daughter and Hindal Mirza's only child. How lonely, how humiliated, how insecure she must have felt all alone without any sibling, parents or children to share her pain her fears her life.
Is this the life she deserved after her father gave up his life made her an orphan to save Akbar's life and give Humayun his throne. Had Hindal Mirza ever thought if he died how Humayun and Akbar will take care of his baby girl all alone in this world? As far as i have read Hindal Mirza did not ask or left a will to marry Ruqaiah to Akbar. Humayun took that decision because Hindal had left his provinces and kingdom to Akbar in his will. All he may have wanted in return is to treat his baby daughter his only child with affection respect and care. And what did Akbar gave in return humiliation after humiliation marrying 300 women after her having 3000 cocubbines etc just treating that woman as a furniture piece of his palace.
So whether in real life or serial Ruqaiah is right in fighting with Akbar and getting insecure about Jodha, Salima and other begums. When she was married to Akbar this was not the life she would have invisioned. Forgetting giving her respect as his wife and an empress now Jalal is starting to be indifferent, humiliate her by shouting at her, saying he can see jealousy burning in her when he goes to jodha and other women etc. Ruqaiah has no father, mother, brother, sister or son and daughter to fight on her behalf for her rights. So its obivious she will fight for herself. If in 21st century woman demand equal rights and some respect in house and work place why Ruqaiah cannot demand rights even in her own house.
She is in precarious situation because if Akbar divorces her where shall she go? She has no other house or family member who can shelter her and provide for her. Hence she is so angry at Akbar for keeping quiet in durbar. If her father/brother were there in that durbar Adham would not have gone alive for disrespecting her. In those times honour of women was utmost and father, brothers copuld die protecting it, woman would die if a word was said against their honour. And Adham Khan told your marriage is invalid that means Ruqaiah staying illegally with a man? How humiliating for her respect and honour.
And jalal just sat their quietly listening to that nonsense. Hamida who jumps to save Jodha everytime left Ruqaiah alone to defend her honour. As husband and sasumaa and more than that first cousin brother and chachi of Ruqaiah they should have defended her. But no both sat as if some theatre drama is going on there. If jodha was there would they have sat so silent never?
Jalal is more worried about his emperor post and hamida empress post whereas for jodha he was ready to give up his throne? While ruqaiah own blood cousin whose father sacrificied life to save you and make your father and you emperor they both will not say a word?
What sort of family is jalal and hamida to ruqaiah? Are they not selfish they used ruqu and her father to gain freedom to become king married her to get her father's provinces etc and now suddenly jalal does not want her as he has jodha, after sometime he will have some other love interest etc. My respect has slowly started reducing for jalal and both akbar as i think about ruqaiah's plight. jalal and hamida should not forget there is a word called gratitude.
No wonder the real ruqaiah wanted to be buried with hindal mirza and babar in kabul than with her husband in agra.
And poor hindal mirza(the real one) must have been turning in his grave for leaving his only child so helpless and vulnerable in life.
Ruqaiah seems innocent she has no maturity like salima to get into jalal's and others good books nor clever like jodha to please others. She says as it is not diplomatic so everyone hate her although she is speaking the obivous truth. Hence she was sidelined by everyone including jalal.

Ruqaiyya really is an interesting character both in history and in this show. Pity she has to be sidelined for a while during the love story. But if they stick to history, she will in the end be rewarded for her loyalty to Jalal no matter what.

Her character is very sad. How ironic we want to see jodha jalal love story but it would be tragic to see the after effect on Ruqaiya. You are right about her she is the way she is because of her environment. No matter how much we like Jalal he is a bit of a pig, pardon my language, he has his career and sleeps around and find time to pursue his true love. As a man he has that luxury. What can Ruqaiya do, when she knows and finally accepts her husband will never love her, will she be free to find her true love as well. No she will not, she is bound to this loveless marriage as a friend. Lets face it no matter how khaas she thinks or even jalal wants her to believe that friend position is, it is not what a wife wants. She is jalied to this life as punishment in the end she never even had children of her own how heart breaking.

I felt so bad for her! She really looked lonely today... Her anger is justified at all three--- Jalal, Jodha, and Hamida...

I have always sympathised with her. She has lead a life of sacrifices, what fault did she do by falling in love with her husband? Her love is selfless, because she has been keeping her emotions grounded, why you ask? Her husband doesn't believe in the concept of love!
So what she did is,did all she could to become his best friend. that is the topmost floor in his building of relations.

Have you noticed, she becomes mean, only when she feels her relationship with Jalal is threatened? And why shouldn't she be? She has beared his 'conditional' love, hasnt she? She became what he wanted her to be.

Now she cant even tell him that, she betrayed him,by falling in love with him, because he would think of it as break of his trust!

Honestly,i know how THAT feels. Im probably not married or wateva. But still,I can say I have beenthru he same shit in one way or the other. And this makes me feel as though Im victimised in a way just like Ruqaiya.

Deep down, she has a good heart. When hoshiyaar had suggested killing Jodha's child, rememba how strongly she had opposed it? And even the other day,she supported the cause of ban on child marriage. What is wrong is wrong.

Im probably the biggest Jalal fan,but he is responsible for Ruqaiya's state. May be unintentional, but then circumstancial. His emotional side was destroyed due to his childhood, which wasn't in his hand. And now he has built these walls around him.

God,these two are the most twisted people in the story. Highly complex! And that is the best thing about them. I loved Ruqaiya's character in the beginning of the show, she was a grey shade and I loved that about her.But now the cvs wanna make her teh typical vamp at times and this annoyes me. People see her as thsi catty bitchy wife who keeps nagging. Which she initially wasn't! there is more to her.

Anyway,Jalal still has his witty side which I totally love. And Im praying the cvs dot put an end to that. He is not a Romeo! He is Jalal! His fiery wit is his USP! Please dont make him all sugary. Eveybody loves a bit of spice ;)

myviewprem, I love your post! And I agree wholeheartedly. From the beginning, I have always felt awful for this tragic character. Because behind all that pride, arrogance and haughtiness, is a woman who has been waiting and waiting for her man to acknowledge her and it will never come. A child would have gone a long way in easing her loneliness but she doesnt have that either. Its just really sad. To be trapped in this for years and years, till death really, with no escape in the 16th century.

Loveanime, I agree with you completely.

This is one aspect of Jalal I dont like. I refuse to accept that he is not aware of her feelings for him. But he never acknowledges it. Nor does he ease her pain. As a friend I wish he would.

Jodha is so honest that she will be loyal to only to what she believes one should stand up for her. But Ruks has undivided blind loyalty to Jalal. I dont know why he doesnt recognize the strength of that at all.

One very good point you raised with ruqaiah for 10 years jalal has been saying i have no heart i do not believe in love so you can only be my best friend
After 10 years when he married jodha suddenly he is having a heart and wants to be a good husband to jodha only
why not a good husband to ruqaiah and salima?
For them its all you are my best friend to ruqaiah and i respect you to salima no husband relations.
Jalal never realizes that ruqaiah has not married him o be his best friend. There is a huge difference between best friends and husband. Some one like hoshiyar and salima or later on jodha are rquaiah's best friends. Woman usually have women only as best friends a man and woman usually do not become best friends even in 21st century they can just be friends not best friends. Because the way men and women think are different.
Jalal cannot be best friend he is only an husband. If jalal had told her before he wanted only best friend not wife ruqaiah may have found a better HUSBAND. Just playing shatranj, paheli, consoling her when angry, giving her lavish gifts and palace etc does not make anyone an husband or best friend. Jalal has not taken time to understand how she feels when he has so many women in his life after her. Has he ever asked her do i have permission to marry anoher wife? etc nooo. So he is neither doing duty of best friend or husband both.

Thats the thing about love. You dont know it exists until you fall in love with someone! Ruqaiya just wasn't the one! Its not Jalal's fault nor is it Ruqaiya's,not even Jodha's.

It just the way it is.

Still happens doesn't it? The person we fall in love with, dont always love us back? 😆

Ektarfa pyaar ki dard tum kya jano chunni baabu? 😭

Jalal will feel the guilt though. Of how his love towards Jodha will shatter Ruqaiya. It will bother him, afterall,he may not love Ruqaiya, but he does care for her. You live with someone so long,a certain amount of strong affection is bound to bloom.
