I agree, Ela, but then Godbharai is done only in the 7th month, not as soon as one finds out about the woman expecting either! So I suppose both the instant godbharai and the keera are special Mughal customs!!😉

It was strange, these premature celebrations. Normally when something like this finally happens after a long wait (but when Akbar is 21 and Ruqaiya the same, how long a wait could it have been? I was always surprised at his being shown as so desperate for an heir when he himself is so very young) the family is very cautious and they consider it bad luck to even announce it before some months are up, ki kisiki nazar na lage.

If he was planning to trick her in the way you suspect, why would he be talking to himself about her the way he does that night when he remembers the poem? He would hardly be trying to playact to himself now, would he?

There is yet another pertinent point. Ela, which is that Jalal and Jodha have to fall in love and stay that way; that is a given.

Then there is no room for any such skulduggery on Jalal's part, for after any such grave breach of faith, there cannot be any Jalal-Jodha love story.

And yes, I call myself a cynic, and have stated that in this post as well!😉
