Actually, I think it's unfair to compare the contestants with a legend in the making: Rahat is extraordinary, by any standard. But genre is not relevant here. If it's a film song, then it's fair game for comparison, I think. We aren't asking them to sing khayals or somesuch. Rahat sang this for Omkara. (A nice edited version: isn't it amazing that live can sometimes be better than studio? It may even be a mark of the caliber of the singer when that happens.)

I was offering evidence that the contestants are still somewhat raw in relation to what established singers demonstrably produce.

Note that Rahat is 34 years old. Will any of the JJWS contestants be this good by that age?

RFAK is 34 😲 Wow pretty young. Debojit is close to his age only couple yrs younger 😳

May be we should consider are they closer to the today's established singers when they were struggling? Does it help being closer in style and rendition to some established singer ? In my opinion it may not be always beneficial to be closer to an established singer. Your chances are still grim as the original is till around!! Whereas if you are not closer but still unique , chances of success is brighter.

there is no way any of these guys are as gud as sonu...shaan...shreya...Sukhwinder...Alka...or most of the others. I honestly believe there is no comparison. Those guys are established singers...and they have given numerous hits and all of them can perform on stage. And as for these singers singing other singers songs...its easier...because they know wat to sing...they can imitate the original or add some of their own flavor...they can hear the track over and over and over and get it right...and as for these singers performing on stage...i assure u...they spend alot of time rehearsing...they don't just get thrown on stage and are told to sing...they sing that song numerous times before they perform it during recording...i just think that these guys will need more time to make it...nd i think the problem is that they are too famous...believe it or not...at their age...sonu and sukhwinder were going house to house trying to get songs...nd these guys are famous...and they are hosts...thats why the skill of many has decreased...it is sumwat better now...but at the start...they all sucked...and were inconsistent...

so in short...these guys don't compare...

I think it is unfair to compare these contestants with established singers. But the popularity of these contestants is immense for their age. These reality shows provides them with instant fame but there is is usually a big lag to match the talent of established singers.

There always trickle few contestants in each show whose singing talent with respect to their age is tremendous. They have been told that they will be ready for playback soon. I think Finalists of chhotey Ustad Aishwariya and Anweysha and Mussarat Abaas from Pakistan belong to this category.

But nothing succeeds like success in Bollywood. One superhit song and you have MD's in line for you. It has not happened with any of the contestants so far except for Shreya Goshal. May be we don't have that exceptional talent yet along with the right luck.

No my dear, the current contestents don't have the required talent and taiyyari to do this, I doubt if they could achieve this even with the highest preparation in their genre..but this is what happens to you when you get praised for ghatiya singing and there is no one to pint your mistake or guide you. They need a strict taskmaster like Jatin da who could give 4/10 to Twinkle when she screwed up the song Khatooba.

Besides there is something called natural talent and voice gifted by God, do you think among the present crop any one has an outstanding voice like Udit Narayan or Shreya Ghoshal? To beat Alka yagnik you have to be atleast as good as Shreya and forget Shreya they are not even close to Ila Arun...-😆, sorry oops.....

but this is a nice thread with some genuine discussion about music please keep it flowing.

I think all the singers are good enough. In case of non-versatile ones, they are great in their own genre and in case of versatile ones...well...they are great, too! It's just that, like Abhijeet said in an interview, the filmmakers prefer to sign on Shaan or Sonu rather than try a new singer.
In fact, inan interview, an established singer...MAYBE Kunal Ganjawala...said Abhijeet's voice is at par with some of the best singers in the industry (he was talking about Amit Sana's deteoriation and Abhijeet's improvement).

Thanks for your post. Just heard this song of Naresh Aiyer. He seems to have a unique voice.
