Bollywood actress Shamita Shetty, who is a participant on celebrity dance show "Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa", feels she has not got a proper opportunity to show her dancing skills on screen.

The 36-year-old actres, however, has special on-screen dance performances to her credit like "Sharara Sharara" from 'Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai' and "Chori Pe Chori" ('Saathiya').

"There is lot more to me but I haven't really expressed that on screen. I am very shy that way. I think I did not have that opportunity to show my dancing on screen," Shamita told PTI.

"But when I am on my way with friends and all, people have seen me chilling differently. People will see a different side of me," the 'Mohabbatein' actress said.

Her choreographer on the show, Deepak Singh, has taught her several dance forms.

"There are many dance forms that my choreographer has taught me. As and when we do every episode more and more dance forms will be explored," she added.

Before coming to "Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa", Shilpa did advise certain things to Shamita.

"She (Shilpa) knows me as a person and knows how passionate I am about music and dance and as a sister she will always give advice to me. When I dance, it transcends me into a different world. The only thing she told me dance your heart out and enjoy," she added.

Shamita said that when it come to dancing, Shilpa has her own unique style that has become her trademark.

"The last song that she (Shipla) did was 'Shut Up and Bounce' I think that song was too good. I think she is one such actress, who has managed to last so long which is very rarely seen and it is fantastic. It is an achievement," Shamita said.

Explaining the reason behind opting for "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa", the actress said, "'Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa' is one of the best dance shows and I love dancing so I took it up. I have been offered this show earlier as well but because of lot of reasons I couldn't take it up. This time things fell in place."

Review: Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded is less dance, more gimmickry

July 13, 2015 15:49 IST

You will be exposed to much comedy, emotion and drama during the course of the show, but you will see only a jhalak of the dance, writes Paloma Sharma.

Shahid Kapoor and Scarlett Wilson

Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa returns for its eight season with promises of being even more entertaining, as the 'Reloaded' in its title would indicate.

Based on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded features Sanaya Irani, Kavita Kaushik, Radhika Madan, Scarlet Wilson, Deepika Samson , Mohit Malik, Aashish Chaudhary, Faisal Khan, Raftaar, Vivian Dsena, Shamita Shetty (who already seems to be a favourite) and Subhreet Kaur Ghumman.

Along with new contestants, the show also has a new panel of judges.

Newlywed Shahid Kapoor replaces Madhuri Dixit as one of the judges. Although change is usually difficult to adjust to, Kapoor is at his charming best and gets along with fellow judge, Karan Johar (who is always in Koffee mode), like a house on fire.

Also added to the mix are choreographer Ganesh Hegde, and dancer-turned-actress Lauren Gottlieb. Both have the title of dance guru conferred upon them, although one is still trying to figure out how this position is different from being a judge.

One should probably mention at this point that Manish Paul plays host but judging by the frequency with which he is found on various stages across various reality shows on various TV channels, his presence is taken more as a fact of life than anything else. However, this does not mean that he's lost touch with his art. Quite the opposite, really. Paul retains his wit and his comic timing only gets better.

Despite its several positive points, as far as the core of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded is concerned, it is hollow. It is ironic that for a show based on dance, most of the entertaining is done by Kapoor and Paul.

What counts as dance on Jhalak is usually counted as acrobatics in most other places. The moves are difficult, no doubt, but an overuse of lifts, cartwheels and special effects leaves you yawning and waiting for the focus to shift to the host and the judges again.

Choreographers and contestants seem more interested in contorting themselves into difficult positions than in graceful movements and song selection.

As Hegde clearly pointed out on Sunday, songs that match a contestants personality will help them do better. Item numbers and the like aren't meant for everyone, all the time. This, however, didn't stop anyone from turning up the heat with skimpy costumes, raunchy movements and having sand/water poured on them -- all of which wasn't always necessary.

The ratings for almost all the acts remained at a minimum of eight marks out of 10, per judge, which was funny because the contestants seemed mechanical and pained.

What's funnier still is that Kapoor and Johar went on to call Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded a family show. It certainly is not. As entertaining as it is, the dance show is best suited for appropriate audiences.

The best part of Jhalak, however, is the new segment they've introduced this season. The show now gives a platform to a non-celebrity dance enthusiast every week to express their talent.

Last night, this opportunity was given to Raj, a Chinese food vendor from Vadodara and among all the stars who sat there, it was Raj who shone the brightest.

Focusing more on gimmickry than dance, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded has chosen it's title wise -- you will be exposed to much comedy, emotion and drama during the course of the show, but you will see only a jhalak of the dance.

Sadly all celebrity dance shows have become this way. The shows always dragged as weeks passed and they didn't have enough contestants' performances to fill the slots but now it has started from day 1.
I used to record a 1.5 hours episode and watch it in half an hour tops. And this season, I watch it live online but most of the time, the stream is playing in the background and I am on another tab (in case of JDJ it was this website this weekend). Maybe it is to make the show more entertaining for the audience who watch it for their favourite celebs. Or maybe it is to draw in an audience which wouldn't otherwise tune in for the love of dance. Whatever the reason, it's really deteriorated the quality of these programs and for the likes of me, they aren't as fun anymore even though we still tune in out of habit.

Shahid Kapoor's Wedding Party continued on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded!

The second week of Jhalak Reloaded was an exciting event that even brought about the whimsical side of the contestants. The show's hosts and contestants didn't let go of the fact that it was the first episode post the celebration of the Bollywoood Star Shahid Kapoor tying the knot. They even decided to celebrate themselves on the show even though it was elimination night.

The show began with an elaborate theme in honor of the newly wed with a party based show titled Party All Night' Jhalak Reloaded even decided to hand out Golden Invitations to each contestant as a commemoration of Shahid's nuptials. Manish Paul, host of the show teased the star by saying that Jhalak Reloaded's theme of a party is because of the wedding which he was invited to and wanted all of the contestants to commemorate the special occasion as well.

TV Star Mohit Malik's wife, Aditi Malik was even present on the show. Aditi even shared that she is a big fan of the star and Shahid as well joined in the fun by playing Adi Ki Kasam' with Mohit. Shahid asked Aditi how does she control her husband of 4 years Mohit to which she replied that he's new to marriage and wait for three more months to which Shahid teasingly said he can already feel the effect even after a few days!

The party didn't stop there with Radhika Madan, who danced last week with Shahid Kapoor shared how heartbroken she was after his marriage by reciting a humorous poem for the actor. The teasing didn't stop there with an audio-visual shown during the show of all the contestants and choreographers wishing Shahid in their own mischievous way. The jokes continued with the two stars Sanaya Irani and Radhika Madan teasingly acting very upset that the uber cool judge Shahid was now married.

Dancing sensation Shubreet Kaur who previously scored one of the highest points brought in the celebration mood with a dhol to the stage to which Shahid Kapoor and Karan Johar began to dance. With the music bringing everyone to the stage, Karan asked Shahid whether it was his idea to which Shahid said that any party is incomplete without a Party Dance.

Jhalak Reloaded's second week brought on creative side of the stars as they all wanted to continue the festivities! With Jhalak Reloaded's contestants continuing to showcase their love for the show, the party will definitely continue with every episode.

The charming host of dancing reality show Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa (Colors), Manish Paul is nowhere to be found on the set of the show.

Wondering what exactly happened?

Manish was on his way to Jhalak set when he got kidnapped. Soon Shahid Kapoor got a call asking for ransom. Till any action was taken, Shahid Kapoor anchored the show to keep it going.

So who was the fourth judge? It was Shahid himself. He kept juggling between being a judge and an anchor.

Now the question is where did Manish go, who kidnapped him and was the ransom money arranged to release him?

To know about this mystery, the viewers will have to tune to Jhalak Dikhla Jaa 8!

Awaiting for them are the amazing performances by our lovely contestants Vivian Dsena, Sanaya Irani, Radhika Madan, Faisal I Khan, Kavita Kaushik, Dipika Kakar and many more...
