Gangtok, May 7: When politicians in Sikkim were campaigning for the elections, T. Lachungpa, a former minister, was drumming up support for Indian football icon Bhaichung Bhutia to help him bag a television dance reality show title.
A former AICC member who quit the Congress and switched to the Sikkim Himali Rajya Parishad, Lachungpa decided to stay away from electoral politics citing ill health and also because of the failure of the Opposition to stitch an alliance to take on the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front.
Lachungpa, who is the chairperson of the Citizens' Forum here, has formed a different kind of coalition to help the footballer win Jhalak Dikhla Jaa 3, a reality dance show of the Sony television channel. The three lakhs votes that he has amassed for Bhaichung through text messages have outnumbered the total electorate of Sikkim.
Yesterday, Lachungpa was in Darjeeling for Bhaichung's cause and asked a large gathering to repay the Sikkimese for the support extended to the Indian Idol from Darjeeling, Prashant Tamang.
"The torch for a widespread support for Bhaichung has been lit with our campaign in Darjeeling. We have also sent out a message to Bhaichung's supporters across the world to vote for him," Lachungpa said here today. The unity between the people of the Darjeeling and Sikkim was evident in the Indian Idol campaign for Prashant and this time, Bhaichung would be benefited from it, he added.
On why he has been campaigning for the footballer, Lachungpa said: "It was necessary for me to come out for Bhaichung, who is an icon for the youths of the country, as no one else was doing so. Despite not keeping well, I had to shoulder the responsibility." He said he had also actively campaigned for Prashant.
The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha's youth wing secretary in Darjeeling, Puran Tami, has pledged the party's support to the footballer.
Bhaichung, who was busy rehearsing for the contest, was happy to learn about the support he has been getting. "I am grateful to all involved in the campaign, not only in Darjeeling and Sikkim but all over the country," he told The Telegraph from Mumbai.
