Renuka's day out!

Having shot continuously for a whole month, Renuka Shahane aka Anjali.

Renuka Shahane in Jeete Hain...

Renuka Shahane got her first day off after a month. Needless to say, the actress spent the much-awaited holiday with her family. Renuka said, "When I was informed that I would be getting a day off this Sunday, I was thrilled and started planning my day's schedule. I did not want it to go waste like any other day."

Renuka's sons Shauryamaan and Satyendra were very happy to get their mother by their side after a long time. Renuka says, "Shauryamaan and Satyendra would not let me go out of their sights. They were just too happy to be with me. So, in the evening, we went out for a lovely dinner with my husband (Ashutosh Rana) and children."

Interestingly, Renuka was supposed to get her weekly offs every Thursday. But, for the last one month, the actress did not get a single day's leave and had been working relentlessly for her show. But Renuka had no complaints against her producers Tony and Deeya Singh. She says, "I don't want to blame my producers because I know the amount of pressure under which we all are working. Ever since I have joined Jeete Hain Jiske Liye, I have realised that there is a huge pressure on the cast and the crew to meet the deadlines. As the channel decided to air the promos highlighting Pooja Ghai aka Avni's murder in the serial; we had to work overtime to complete the scenes."

So, is there any chance that she will get her compensatory leaves? "Sadly, these rules are never implemented. But thankfully, my producers have promised me to give a weekly off henceforth," she added.

I am not quitting Sony,that's final:Sandiip
By: Shaheen Parkar
April 2, 2007

Sandiip Sikcand, the channel's chief creative director, clears the air about buzz that he's been shown the door

It Ain't True: Sandiip Sikcand
Pic/ PRADEEP DHIVAR

Contrary to rumours, Sandiip Sikcand is not quitting Sony. In the last couple of months, there has been more talk about his exit than the channel's shows that are currently on air.

Almost eight months after his appointment as Sony's chief creative director, Sikcand clears the air about the buzz around him and the channel's prospects.

Were you asked to leave the channel because shows weren't picking up?

There was no such thing. I am not quitting Sony and that's final. I was not asked to go nor am I leaving.

People would call me, saying, "Hey, you are still in office? We thought you had gone." I heard that my last working date was March 31. That day has come and gone and I am still in Sony's office.

So is the date April 30 now?

No. This is baseless talk. I've stopped reacting to them now.

Do you know who is behind these rumours?

I have no clue. If I knew, I would pick up the phone and ask the person why. Why write my obit even before I've gone?

It is being said that you floated these rumours yourself.

That's ridiculous. Why would I do such a thing? What would I gain from this?

A dose of publicity, perhaps? You love seeing your pictures in the papers.

That's crap. There are so many assumptions and allegations about and against me, which are all baseless.People have known me as a theatre person even before I joined Balaji Telefilms.

I've done several plays like Ask What Father Says, Oh God! And Champagne In The House with well-known actors, so it is not that I am suddenly basking in the limelight or looking to be written about.

Are you under pressure to perform?

My job is challenging. It's not easy and I've been giving it my all.

There is also speculation about the fate of several Sony shows…

Again, those are baseless rumours. None of the present shows are going to be pulled off the air. Kaajjal, Ek Ladki Anjaani Si, Thodi Khushi Thode Gham, Durgesh Nandinii and Jeete Hai Jiske Liye will continue.

The newly launched Virrudh has also received favourable response. In fact, Durgesh Nandinii has a new character Sikander (Mohit Malik) to challenge Durgesh and even Jeete Hai Jiske Liye is due for a major twist

Then why was Kulvaddhu targetted?

It was not targetted. We have conducted surveys to understand the profile of our viewers and realised that it was not fitting with the profile of the channel. There are certain policy decisions the channel has to take.

Was it done to appease another prospective producer?

Certainly not. No channel functions like that. To appease one producer we cannot displease another.

Are you the reason why there are no Balaji shows on Sony currently?

There is no such thing. A channel is open to all production houses and their ideas.

Why is there always buzz about your moves with reference to Ekta Kapoor?

This is what I have experienced from Day One at Sony. Balaji is my past. I have moved on and want to do this job the best I can.

Have you met Ekta since quitting Balaji?

No.

Will there ever be an end to the controversies around you?

I am unnecessarily dragged into it. I have encountered several ups and downs and it's all part of life. I have learnt to take all this in my stride.

No kidding, Renuka

The actress has been hoarding child psychology books to help her bring up her kids the right way!

Renuka Shahane

Renuka Shahane takes all her roles rather seriously. And while the actress is back on the small screen since she was focusing on family, she isn't going to let her thespian ambitions come in the way of rearing her kids, Shauryamaan and Satyendra, the right way. Renuka is buying child psychology books by the truckloads! The actress it has been reported is known to visit various book stores and she gathers many books that are aiding her in bringing up baby.

When asked about her fixation, the actress said, "I was a student of psychology and I read a lot of books on child psychology. The theoretical books though are not as useful as the application books which educate me on various techniques and help me with insight as well. I do read a lot of books like 'Everything You Need To Know About Your Baby From Birth To Age Two' and 'Ask Super Nanny' by Jo Frost, which give me specific instances and situations parents and children go through. These books do guide one on how to discipline children in a certain manner."

Renuka's reliance on books is also telling in terms of how our society has indeed changed. "Earlier, we used to handle every situation in a traditional way and refer to our joint family members for advice but currently thanks to changing times, even the experiences and problems that children undergo have likewise changed drastically. The traditional way of handling children's issues does not help. These books provide me with very effective solutions to modern problems."

A mother of two, Shouryaman (four and a half years) and Satyendra (two and a half years), Renuka remembers the days when her elder child was going through a phase which had driven her up the wall. Her kid's lit then proved to be a boon. "My elder son was going through what you call the 'terrible twos'. I just couldn't deal with his temper tantrums. The Ask Supernanny by Jo Frost was a godsend during this turbulent time."

Hubby Ashutosh Rana values his wife's kiddie library just as much. "Every kid has its own way of dealing with situations. Like us, they react also. One has to be well informed about how to deal with them in these changing times. Personality development is very important in these changing times." Guess, Bollywood could hire these two as child psychologists given the number of brats it creates - brats who remain brats well into their '40s!

Renuka on Jite Hai Jiske Liye

Making her comeback into television with the serial 'Jite Hai Jiske Liye' on Sony, Renuka Sahane finds it difficult in coping with the hectic schedules of a daily soap.

In an
interview with us, she talks about the serials latest developments.

Now that the mystery has been unfolded, what is going to happen next?
The total mystery has yet not been unfolded. Now there will be a
court case and everybody along with me will be questioned. What will happen after that is to be watched.

Will the serial take a leap?
It will not happen immediately but yes it is slated to happen some time later.

What is your take about the leap taken in the serial?
In the original Spanish version, the story picked up after the leap. So it has to happen here too and so early. See leaps occur when the story for one generation is over and the second generation needs an introduction and the story is based on them. They add pace to the story.

Post such leaps, children grow up but their parents don't seem to look older.
Now-a-days, even in real life we do not find the
elderly people looking too old. There is so much available to make people look young that one does not look his/her age. So why should we in the glamour world look old!

Will your character emerge stronger in the serial?
Yes, it will emerge as a better person. My character will emerge out stronger than before because of what she has gone through. All those whom she trusted and loved have gone against her. She will not turn into a grey character but will no longer be that sweet dependent woman.

Is it difficult to adjust to the schedules?
Don't ask me that. I'm barely managing with the schedules. I really do not wish to even think about how I manage my schedules.

How is your rapport with everyone on the sets especially Pooja who will now not be there with you people?
We all share a good rapport with each other. I will miss Pooja because once you work together you build a
relationship with that person. The day when we were shooting Pooja's death, I was pretty sad because after that she would not be with us. It does feel bad when ever any character track comes to an end, no matter for whatever reasons.

Smita Bhansal who has played your sister in 'Kora Kagaz' is also working with you this time.
Yes, I had worked with her and we are very close to each other. I'm happy that she is
working with me again.

How is the atmosphere on the sets?
We enjoy ourselves a lot. We also play pranks on each other. I was on leave on April 1st. I got a call from the production house that due to some telecast problem, a scene had to be re-shot so I was needed to be there. But I knew it was a prank and escaped but Supriya had a bad time. The production told her that the scenes after Avni's death had to be shot and thus she needed to be in white kurta. Poor Supriya, she searched the whole of Inorbit Mall and when she called back saying that the white kurta was not available, only then she was told it was a prank.

You are reading books oh child psychology, how much does it help?
I'm a lenient mother but I want my children to get the best. So these books on
child psychology do keep me updated as to how to deal with my children, disciplinary measure I should take and all these kinds of things. So they really help me.

There were rumours that 'Jeete Hain Jiske Liye' is not doing too well. What would you like to say?
Let us wait and watch.

Leapfrogging over TRPs?

Renuka Shahane's comeback serial Jeete Hain Jiske Liye is taking a 20-year leap. (Already? Wasn't it launched just a month ago?)

Ayub Khan and Renuka Shahane in Jeete Hain...

A 20-year-leap formula seems to have found wide acceptance as the ideal remedy to resurrect a show on the great Indian television scene. Jeete Hain Jiske Liye, launched with much fanfare just a month ago is already bracing up to take the 'great leap'. Will this premature leap benefit the show that has failed to strike a chord with the audiences?

The reason behind the generation jump is quite simple. Owing to dismal TRPs the track will now be spiced up and stirred. April 23 is the day designate for the facelift expected from Priya Wal of Remix fame and Yuvraj of Maayka fame. The duo will play Renuka Shahane and Ayub Khan's grown-up children.

However, this will be a leap with a difference. No grey streaks and wrinkles for Renuka Shahane who will slide into the character of a middle-aged woman. On the contrary Renuka aka Anjali will don a glamorous avatar quite like that of Hema Malini's in Baghban. On the verge of a makeover, Renuka says, "I am looking forward to the leap. I am going to play a 46-year-old woman. After a lot of trials and tribulations (basically, what's gone on in the 20-year interim) my character returns to avenge on the killer."

Renuka says that there are more changes in the offing. "I play a very complex character (laughs). In fact, I am surprised that the leap did not take place in the first 20 episodes itself! Also, I have no issue playing mother to teenagers on the show," says Renuka.

What does soon-to-be-old Ayub Khan have to say? "I haven't had the time to sit and discuss my look and details with the production house yet as we have been shooting back- to-back for the show. I am sure I will have a grey-haired look. The dynamics of my relationship with Renuka will change of course. I am fine with playing a father to teenaged kids as long as they pay me well," laughs Ayub.

Producer Deeya Singh who managed to design this disaster after Jassi… takes up cudgels for her ailing show and says, "We always planned to take the show forward by way of a generation leap. In fact, since it is happening so soon on our show we are looking at it as a challenge. I agree that it will be tough to give the show a makeover overnight. We have roped in four young actors too."

The actors will soon have a 'look test' for the leap and will begin shooting from next week.

No TV for our kids, say telly actors

Though they act in the saas-bahu sagas, TV actors prefer to keep their kids from viewing such soaps.

ANJALI CHANDRA
You could treat this as an admission of sorts. In a recent interview veteran soap artist Smriti Iraani admitted that she does not let her children watch her serials, preferring instead that they stick to educational programmes. While Iraani explains that this is her personal choice regarding the values she wants her children to grow up with, other tele-actors agree that considering the regressive nature of prime time soaps that they act in, they would rather prefer their children not view the programmes.

As Ronit 'Mr Bajaj' Roy succinctly puts it, "That was a personal choice exercised by Smriti, and I agree with her. This is a job for me. I'm an artiste and I might be acting in an adult film, but that does not mean I would allow my five-year-old daughter to see it! Even while taking on those roles at times, I think that there mustn't be even one real-life family doing the things that form the premise of these serials!"

Agreeing vehemently with Roy is actress Achint Kaur who, while laughingly admitting that her son is not likely to be interested in soaps, nevertheless is aware of the regressive nature of these shows. As she says, "No doubt these serials are regressive. Nothing that is shown in them takes place in the real world. Maybe aeons ago, but not in this day and age."

So what is the solution to prevent children from being influenced by these shows?

For Renuka Shahane, the answer lies in correcting the stereotyped image of television programmes. While vehemently denying TV censorship in the case of her own children "because there is definitely more than TV serials that influence a child's personality," Shahane avers, "I come from an era when TV provided something for everyone. Programmes took into consideration a variety of likes and dislikes. But now TV seems to have become stereotyped."

"As actors, it is our responsibility to ensure we provide a variety to the viewers, instead of shows looking like mirror images of one another," says Smriti in answer to the question. While for Achint Kaur, "there is hardly anything relatable or contemporary in the soaps. TV needs a lager variety ranging from bread fiction to reality shows and everything in between."

Something that Roy explains when he says, "What we need is holistic viewing. For example, there is an absolute dearth of good comic relief on TV. Also, action serials and detective shows would be a welcome change, but unfortunately action series have not done well in the past in India. The world over there are different time bands for children's shows, comic shows and a late night band for soaps. But in India, primetime viewing invariably means soaps."

"My character in Jeete is loud but not gay"
Rituraj Singh

Rituraj ki Kahaani in the TV industry started with Zee's Tol Mol Ke Bol. Later, the versatile actor with unusual looks went on to do Sadma (DD),

Jaane Kaha Mera Jigar Gaya Ji (Sony) and Banegi Apni Baat.

Rituraj is one of the few actors' around who has been consistently experimenting with his roles. Much appreciated for his negative act in Kahaani, currently Rituraj is also been seen in a comic avatar in Jeete Hain Jiske Liye.

In a quick interview to Tellychakkar.com the actor sums up his success mantra in life.

"One has to work with a lot of non actors today"

Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki and Tol Mol Ke Bol gave me the recognition and the will to shift base from Delhi to Mumbai. Over the years the industry has changed in a variety of ways. Earlier, actors were appreciated for their acting. Today you are taken in a show if you're a star and not because you're a good actor. Talent is not given the merit and one has to work with a lot of non-actors.

Also, I feel bad that there's very little focus on the story, script and characters. The emphasis is more on completing the episodes and getting done with the day's telecast. Also, one has to go through the grind of a daily soap. It's like a factory at work.

"Right now Sanjay Doshi is in jail"

Last I worked for Balaji in K Street Pali Hill and Kahaani. After K Street Pali Hill went off air I was offered roles in Karam Apnaa Apnaa, Kesar and even Qayamath but somehow things didn't work out. I am still on the list of actors of Kahaani in which my character Sanjay Doshi is in jail. I may be brought back as per the story requirement. My relationship with Balaji goes a long way. I acted with them in Bhandhan and Ghar Ek Mandir. Most of the producers I have worked with have repeated me in their shows.

" I don't mind greying my hair"

In Ek Ladki Anjani Si I am playing Sai Deodhar's father Abhinav Raheja who has a gory past. Ayesha played by Karishma Tanna is my illegitimate daughter. I am in jail for killing Ananya my own daughter. I have no issues greying my hair or playing a father.

"I am trying to be different than Maddy"

I am playing Tarun Moolchandani. He is Ramona's husband played by Maninee Mishra. It's a positive character with a comic side. My character is loud but not gay although it does has some feminine shades to it. I have worked hard to portray the character convincingly and am doing it very differently from what Maddy did in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi.

"I am a romantic"

I am a die hard romantic by nature. I love to write poetry as well as philosophy but no one is allowed to read it. I am also into sports. I enjoy playing Lawn Tennis as well as football.

"My children are my best friends"

I have two children, Jahaan and Adhiraj. I love to spend time with them on a daily basis. I take them out for sports, movies, shopping and holidays. They are my best friends.

"I relate to saas bahu soaps"

I relate to saas bahu shows as there's a lot of opportunity to perform in such shows. I like all kind of stories. People recognize me because of my Kahaani act instantly because of that character's success.

"One should enjoy life"

I believe one should enjoy life and yet remain within limits. This way one stays healthy for a long period of time.

Where does Renuka fit in Star Parivaar?
By: Shaheen Parkar
April 14, 2007
The grand dames: Sakshi Tanwar and Renuka Shahane in a promo of the Star Parivar Awards 2007

Even though Renuka Shahane is now the face of Sony in Jeete Hai Jiske Liiye, she is a contender for the Star Parivaar Awards 2007!

If this looks a bit strange, it is because this year's gala is celebrating actors and shows on the channel of the past five years — Renuka finds mention because of her performance in Asha Parekh's Kora Kagaz! As this is the fifth edition of the awards, the channel is celebrating a high-five.

The event will be held in May at south Mumbai's National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA).

According to Harsh Rohatgi, GM (content and communications), Star, "The Star Parivaar awards celebrates characters and not actors.

We have all the well-known names from the shows of the past years for this edition of the awards."

Past v/s present

Star Parivaar provides a platform for the viewers to vote for their favourite characters. So the nominations are for the best bahu, best pati, best beti, best saas.

Apart from these popular categories, there is also for the first time, a Hall of Fame, which will also be decided by the Star viewers.

This category includes Smriti Z Iraani, Sakshi Tanwar, Dolly Sohi who will be competing with actors from Star's earlier soaps like Neena Gupta (Saans), Renuka Shahane (Kora Kagaz) and Aroona Irani (Des Mein Nikkla Hoga Chand).

There are also special awards for members of soap families who have been with the audience over five years.

The awards gala has a Musical Broadway as its theme. Expected to perform are the Saans couple Neena Gupta-Kanwaljeet, Kiran Kumar-Aroona Irani to young couples like KT-Lakshya and Prachi-Neev besides Prerna.

The event telecast on Star Plus, has popular characters also hosting the event. There is also a red carpet and several pre and post event bashes of the Parivaar awards.

TELE EXPRESS

Talking point: with ayub khan

Aparna Chandra

Having to play a central character, as Aman in Jeeta Hain Jiske Liye, must feel a welcome break?
That was among the temptations in doing this project. I wasn't enjoying negative roles any more. Also Renuka Shahane was making a comeback and we've been friends since her film days. Last week's jump in TRPs has only boosted confidence further. Now we are taking a 20-year leap in the story which, I must add, was always there in the script — we had delayed it because we thought we should let the background build a bit. At the same time, working for a daily is very draining. My wife, Niharika, who takes the hardest hit of my schedules calls me a myth because I'm never there.

How do you beat the stress?
My children, Tahura and Zohra, are my haven. I have to also credit other cast members as there's such great camaraderie.<

What's been the most testing thing ever since you made the switch from films to TV?
I've been around for seven years now and it's been a learning process. There was a time when there was a constant battle in my head. How do I portray what I don't believe in? To add to it I would get feedback on how unconvincing I looked in one scene or the other. Now I have made peace with those demons. I have realised I just have to do what I have been asked to do. The strangest thing is you can't leave TV, the minute you decide so, a craving comes over you.

Does that mean films are off the rooster?
Unfortunately, yes. There's just no time, even to discuss a film role. I miss films especially for their outdoor shoots. Though working conditions in films and TV are becoming similar with 12-hour shifts.

What do you watch on TV?
A lot of reality shows, Discovery, news—I can't watch soaps or films, I don't have the patience for things so predictable.

Few years from now what would you rather be doing on TV?
Be a location hunter. Travel the world and get paid for it.

And seriously speaking?
The one thing any actor would tell you is that they want to be worshipped.

Customized Safari trip for Ashwini Kalsekar.

Today on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya when Hindus shell their moolah for gold investments, Ashwini Kalsekar (Aadira bua of Jeete Hai Jiske Liye) follows suit but her indulgence is a brand new Tata Safari Dcor. And it's not just a regular model - this one's going to be custom made to her taste!

Most actors opt for a limited edition but Ashwinijust didn't think it would be perfect for her; she reasons, "I wanted a car that would accommodate my necessities; I do my make-up in it, so good lighting is vital. I also need a refrigerator in my vehicle, a monitor for my DVD player, but all of that does some in a fully loaded Dcor. There are a few more things I wish to improvise, however it will take it's time as I haven't found the right people to get the changes done my way."

So is she going to bring it in with a lot of aplomb? "No, I am not the pompous types. Also, it's just a car and not big a thing. I will perform the ritual pooja as it is a propitious day, after which the car will be welcomed home. We will later drive it to the local temple." She is hushed up on the price stating that the changes are minor.

The car brings in a sigh of relief for Kalsekar as travelling has been quite a task for some days now. She drives to all her shoots in boyfriend Murli's (Sharma) car. "Yes, I am using his vehicle for a while and the poor guy is forced to use public transport. He travels in cabs to all his shoots and assignments and still insists that I take the car." It touches Ashwini to see how her man's love manifests even in little things like these. "It is so sweet, he knows I can not bear the heat, it just drains me out and with the gruelling shooting sessions, I have no stamina left. He understands it all and it's such a big sacrifice on his part, especially in the scorching summer."

Love is definitely in the air and as she drives in with her Safari today, she will make life comfortable for Murli as well!
