NEW YORK —Feb 19th 2007. Bollywood fans will be able to enjoy the American-debut performances of a host of Indian celebrities at this year's Bollywood Awards Ceremony, to be held on May 26th 2007 at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island. Rang De Basanti's Soha Ali Khan and Gangster's Kangana Ranaut have confirmed their participation in this year's gala event.
Soha Ali Khan, daughter of yesteryear actress, Sharmila Tagore, and famed cricketer, Nawab of Pataudi, and sister of top actor, Saif Ali Khan, will be performing to a medley of musical hits. Soha, a thinking man's heartthrob, studied at Oxford University and is accredited with a Master's in International Relations from the London School of Economics. In addition to acting in a number of light-hearted and candy floss romantic films which won her popular appeal, she has also been critically acclaimed for her performances in Rituparno Ghosh's Antar Mahal and Rakesh Mehra's Rang De Basanti, emerging out of the shadow of her accomplished family. Bearing an uncanny resemblance to her mother, the ethereal Bengali beauty, Soha is sure to set men's hearts aflutter with her performance.
Kangana Ranaut, a beauty from Himachal Pradesh, entered the Indian film industry with a splash, wowing audiences and critics alike with her portrayals of a bar dancer in Gangster and of a mentally-ill Parveen Babi in Woh Lamhe. Touted as Bollywood's "next big heroine," she has already signed Suneel Darshan's Shaka Laka Boom Boom and Anurag Basu's Metro. At the Star Screen and GIFA Award ceremonies, Ranaut bagged the Best Debut Awards.
Soha and Kangana will not be the only ones with butterflies in their stomachs, debuting in front of an anticipated audience of 15,000 fans - also making their American-debut performances are Omkara's Vivek Oberoi and NRI favorite, Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi's lead, Mona Singh, who will also emcee the Awards ceremony. "First-time performers always invigorate our Awards by putting their best into their acts. As always, this year's Bollywood Awards will feature a mix of new and experienced performers, making for a varied and exciting experience for the viewer," said Rajiv Dandona, Vice President of the Bollywood Awards.
The performers announced thus far for the Bollywood Awards this year include Akshay Kumar, Vivek Oberoi, Arjun Rampal, Urmila Matonkar, Neha Dhupia, Soha Ali Khan, Kangana Ranaut, Mona Singh, Raghav, Pakistan's hottest actress and singer Shahida Mini.
