The night before Aagham's graduation
Ragini had stormed off from the terrace encountering a drunk Nachiket. She had absolutely no idea how to deal with him and the last thing she wanted to do was engage with him when he was not in his senses. He was the kind of man who had bottled up so many things and this was not the way she wanted it all to come out in their relationship.
She knew their relationship was moving towards a defining point, a turning point. Both of them were building towards a release and tensions were running high. And she just wanted a break.. some time to herself where Nachiket would not judge her actions. She tossed and turned in bed the entire time and could not sleep. Nachiket had still not hit the bed.. suddenly she felt a thump besides her.. it was him.. she turned to see him sprawled all over his side - one of his arms hanging from the beside. He was sloshed and completely hammered. Reeking of alcohol - it put Ragini off instantly. It suddenly struck her - she had never woken up to a hungover Nachiket. In their brief time together when they were married for the first time, Nachiket had never gotten sloshed.. never forgotten his responsibilities as a husband and father.. and never ever let go of himself. She worried herself on how he would behave in the morning.
She unlocked the phone that was spilling out of his pants' pocket to check if he had set any alarms for the morning - knowing all of them would have to wake up early for the graduation - he had not. It was so typical of him - even though they were fighting, he had sitll assumed that Ragini would do all the planning and alarm-setting and make sure everyone was ready on time. She fumed and set three alarms for 8 AM five minutes after each other.
The alarms, one after the other woke Nachiket up and for a moment, he forgot everything that was going on between him and Ragini.. he moved over to her side in an effort to hold her close to himself but she was not there.. the headache from the hangover caught up with him instantly and the last evening came back to him. He immediately repented the words he said to her - how could he? But again, he willed himself not to feel bad for his words - there was a strange will and determination inside him this time - something that convinced him that this time, he was not wrong. Ragini was.
There was a message from Ragini on the phone and he was so livid he did not even check it or bother to find out where Ragini was. If it is important enough to her, she'll make it, he thought to herself and they all drove to the graduation.
The kids were receiving their degrees and Ma and Ranbir who were flanking Nachiket on both sides could feel the tension in his body and worried about him and Ragini, praying it would all be okay. It was Aagham's turn next and Nachiket clenched his jaw in anger as Ragini had still not made it. Aagham walked to the stage with a smile only to be stopped by someone and be given a peck on his cheek. It was Ragini, she had made it and was now rubbing her lipstick off his cheek. Aagham hugged her and received his degree - the entire family clapping proudly.
Nachiket and Ragini's eyes met for a painful minute - the first graduation of their kids they were attending together. But were they.. together? Tears filled their eyes and he looked away first.. only to look up to see Ragini talk to someone on the phone and disappear from his sight. Nachiket was not going to declare truce. Neither was she.
