Garima - Ethics clearly don't hold much value for her. She is only concerned about their daughter's happiness and while this should have looked like a selfless mother; her statement about having seen this dream since a long time make it seem like a selfish move. I wonder whether its only me, but her dialogs make it appear like her dream and its fulfillment is more important. And her strict face (or is that just her normal face 🤔😂) remind me of the typical MILs from Saas-Bahu sagas rather than a mother worried about her daughter. Overall, I would she say is the one who will be adding the drama quotient here (I just hope my prediction about MIL from Saas-Bahu show goes wrong).
Garima does not exactly comes across as unethical I guess! I found her selfless & dedicated to her husband & his family to a great extent because we need to remember here that Garima is the step mother of Payal and yet Garima nurses these dreams for her step daughter just like a real mother would do! She does not hesitate to give away so much of money or the shop too just to see her step daughter happy! How many step mothers do that? Yes I agree that giving & taking dowry is absolutely unethical but unfortunately in some parts of our country this has become a norm! In spite of anti-dowry laws, this cruel tradition is still continuing! The ones who give dowry are as much responsible as the ones who demand / take dowry, but in most of the cases, the ones who are giving dowry, are more vulnerable & are victims of circumstances! The problem is that in 90% cases they won’t find a groom for their daughters if they are not ready to pay dowry! The society (especially those parts where Garima or Shashi belong to) has accepted this norm & if the bride’s family rejects a groom on this ground (dowry) the bride’s family is often declared as outcast by the society in many places! This is the harsh reality of their life! If the groom is an engineer or doctor, more dowry is demanded! Many a times in films we see a step mom tries to get rid of her step daughter by marrying her off to a lesser qualified guy or a guy of a much lower status so that she can save on paying such astronomical sums in dowry! But the same step mom would not hesitate to spend a fortune for her own daughter’s marriage! But Garima is not like that! She comes across as a dutiful wife & mother never discriminating against Payal! Rather she would try to give more to Payal than to Khushi (her late sister’s daughter) lest buaji or any one else from her in-laws’ side taunts her! Though Garima gets taunted at times by buaji nevertheless in spite of her attempts to be as fair & selfless or giving as possible!
Garima in the first few episodes was played by Tuhina Vohra. Later on her looks would change as Pyumori Mehta takes over 😄 To me she comes across as a timid woman, scared of the consequences & repercussions of certain actions at times! Otherwise she is loving, dedicated, selfless too but she has her own limitations & like many other women from that kind of social background, Garima too is often seen to compromise with the circumstances which is not uncommon in our society! She wants to protect the interests of her family & here she has wholeheartedly embraced the everyone from her husband’s side as her own! She does not have her own kids! She is living for others & also she is grateful to them for accepting her as their own. Very few women can do that I guess.
I agree with the analyses of the rest of the characters. The magical journey has begun & I can’t thank you enough Stuti & the rest of the writers / members here who are taking us down the memory lane & giving us an opportunity to refresh our memories of the iconic love saga all over again ❤️

Hello!
Thank you for writing out such a comprehensive analysis for Garima.
Before I begin, let me say something that should have been mentioned in the original thread itself 🤦🏻♀️ (I'll go back and edit it. Thanks to your comment that I realized my mistake. 😄)
So the NOTE is - The character analysis is written from the perspective of someone watching the episode for the first time and being completely unaware of what is going to happen in the future episodes.
With that perspective, since it hasn't been explicitly mentioned anywhere in the episode that Payal is Garima's step daughter, it is assumed for now that she is the biological mother only. For now, even Khushi being adopted is not known.
[Also, has it ever been mentioned in the show itself - that Payal was not the daughter of Garima? If so please tell me where this was because I've been truly confused since a long time. I've read a lot of people saying this but never found any direct reference in the show.]
I understand what you're saying about dowry being the norm (especially for people of some regions). I've seen conversations related to dowry occurring so naturally as if it were just one of the rituals of marriage itself. But my point here was that Payal and Khushi were quite clearly against it, Shashi was somewhere in the middle but Garima seemed to have no hesitation at all. She wasn't shown even considering Shashi's words once. Instead, she immediately started telling him not to think of all this and that they are ladki wale (girl's family), etc etc. That is what I meant that such ethics don't seem to hold much place in her life and she can't even contemplate the idea of going against the norm (even if it wrong). This is not to say that I consider her to be an unethical person overall, sorry if it came off as that.
Coming to the selfish part, I was trying to say the same thing. That the scene was supposed to show a selfless mother willing to go to any lengths for her daughter's happiness. But the sentence about her dream and how close it was to fulfillment twisted this thing into appearing selfish. That was what it felt like to me atleast.
About the two different actors, I'm obviously aware of it 😆. This was written from the perspective of a first time watch so I'm pretending like I don't know that the actress is going to change. And somehow, this Garima looks very strict to me. Maybe it's the fact that she was only there for a few episodes and had no light hearted scenes could have set this image for me. I personally like Pyumori Mehta better. She appears kind and timid like you said, but is also capable of showing great anger and being strict.
Thank you for your lovely comment. It was interesting to look at Garima from your perspective. Be around the forum and active, its such fun to read your comments 😃

Stuti

- In episode 01, between 9:00 and 10:00 Garima says that since she took charge of this house, getting Payal married was her only dream, implying that Payal was already there when she married Shashi.
- In episode 321, between 19:30 and 20:30 Arnav vaguely reveals that Payal is Shashi's daughter not Garima's.
- In episode 329, between 4:00 and 5:00 Buaji clearly says Shashi married Garima after he lost his first wife and Garima took care of young Payal

Thank you so much! Yes I noticed the reference in first episode but it wasn't direct enough to be taken as proof of this thing. A viewer wouldn't necessarily think that taking charge of the house meant that Payal was already present and not Garima's daughter.
But the thing in episode 329 that you have mentioned - yes! I remember this now. So the original serial also showed this and it wasn't just a head canon of writers. Thanks for clearing this doubt.
But this makes me wonder why Khushi was always shown the adopted card but Payal not being Garima's daughter was rarely mentioned. And Khushi kept talking about her biological parents but Payal or for that matter Sashi never thought of their mother / wife?!
Love ❤️
Payal lost her mother when she was very young. So, she does not remember her mother. To give benefit of doubt, they never talked about her in front of Payal to not to upset her.Originally posted by: ssttuuttii

Garima had a failed affair and she was grateful to Shashi for marrying her. So, she put her everything in taking care of Payal. When her sister and her husband died in a car accident. She adopted Khushi. We must commend Shashi for loving Khushi as much as he loved Payal, I must say he loved Khushi more and commend Payal for loving Khushi as her own sibling.
Cheers.....
Reading the posts and each of the comments on this thread and I am enjoying it thoroughly! The first episode was enough of an indication that here is something grand coming up which is going to make a huge impact on all of us forever ❤️ All the characters were so beautifully unfolding!
